Fun, friends and great memories at Camp Qwanoes “Camp Qwanoes’ Aqua Park is like a floating playground on the Pacific! It’s always growing and drawing kids into some unforgettable H2O adventure!”
From every direction morning to night Something’s happening here Can you see it? Can you feel it? Something’s so good it’s hard to imagine So JUMP IN and let the adventures begin!
M
orning to night, something’s happening at Camp Qwanoes. “It’s always the highlight of my summer,” said a camper last summer. Another said, “The best place on earth.” Since 1966, Qwanoes has been inviting kids to unplug from the everyday and jump into an experience like no other. Qwanoes is located beside a mountain in a spectacular oceanfront setting across from Salt Spring Island. From wake boarding and a giant aqua-park to a zip-line through the forest, there are over 75 activity options to choose from. Kids also enjoy crazy games and great music, or sleeping out with their cabin group at the beach with a stunning view of the sunrise. While having fun, kids experience real love and acceptance by caring staff from all over the world. A camper said, “Everyone here is so considerate. Even if they’re not your counselor; it can be anyone and they’ll care for you, no matter what.” Qwanoes expects to have staff from 10+ countries this summer. In the words of a camper: “Qwanoes
is amazing. Not just because of the activities or the beach or the fun times, but because it gives us all the chance to meet amazing people and bond with amazing staff members… it has been one of the highlights of my childhood. Qwanoes has changed my life forever.” Speaking of the impact camp clearly has on kids, Scott Bayley, Qwanoes’ executive director says, “What really makes a week at Qwanoes so special
is that we love kids. Kids are not only accepted but are also valued here, and they enjoy an escape from our fast-paced, plugged-in world.” Qwanoes is a Christian camp and is an ideal place for fun-filled, lifechanging adventure. All are welcome and some space is available for this summer. Check out the summer 2019 video at: qwanoes.ca/summer/media. For more info, visit: qwanoes.ca

Bluegrass music rolling through the hills and hollows Nestled in the hills of the beautiful Cowichan Valley at Laketown Ranch Music Park, two kilometres west of Lake Cowichan, is the all-ages, family friendly Cowichan Valley Bluegrass festival.
Performing will be three-time Grammy nominee Claire Lynch, credited by Dolly Parton as having “one of the sweetest, purest and best lead voices in the music business today.”

the sound of bluegrass and Appalachian old-time music is best heard outdoors, rolling through hills and hollows and drifting down mountain valleys on the wind.
I
t’s back-porch music from a simpler time — honest and pure while capturing the energy of rock and roll, sadness of the blues, improvisation of jazz, rhythm and harmony of southern gospel and haunting sounds of its Celtic roots. At the Cowichan Valley Bluegrass Festival, June 14 to 16, you can experience real music played by real people around campfires and performed on stage by some of the most proficient acoustic musicians on the planet. The festival features three-time Grammy nominee Claire Lynch, credited by Dolly Parton as having “one of the sweetest, purest and best lead voices in the music business today.” Children and teens under 18 get in free with an adult for a weekend filled with concerts, free instrument and vocal workshops with headliners, an old-time
square dance, special children’s performance and spontaneous and organized jam sessions. The site has ample camping and 5,800 square feet of covered performance space for all-weather audience comfort, and even “glamping” for those wanting to pamper themselves. Performing are Boston’s The Lonely Heartstring Band, Toronto’s acclaimed Slocan Ramblers and top local and regional acoustic bands, including Vancouver Island’s The Sweet Lowdown. Weekend adult passes are only $70. The festival is close to all the amenities of the Cowichan Valley, including water sports, river tubing, wineries, hiking, biking and the 44-metre-high Kinsol Trestle. Reggae Solstice Summer Splash — June 21-22
I
n the world of music festivals, 20-years is an eternity. Twenty years of bringing together music lovers, dedicated to a culture and to each other, is no small feat. Each year, we watch a musical and artistic community spring up around us and are amazed at the energy this community brings. The people of this city and music-lovers from out of town embrace us, open their ears and share a dance. The often overlooked diversity of the city is on full display every year at Ship Point as festival goers of all ages, from all walks, gather together to celebrate the rhythms and grooves of life. This special relationship to our audience and city has helped the festival become a hub for the international music community — an event where local and international artists come together to share and learn from each other. The audience can hear and discover a diverse array of new music from around the globe — right in their own backyard. To commemorate our 20th Anniversary, we will host our firstever Reggae Solstice Summer Splash on Friday, June 21. The Splash features reggae royalty Ky-Mani Marley and Sister Nancy. The following evening, Saturday, June 22, ska/punk legends Less Than Jake headline the main stage. What we love most about Victoria’s Ska & Reggae Festival is treating everyone to an international music feast! Enjoy three FREE nights of world-class programming — June 19, 20 & 23 — on the main stage. International ska bands like Peru’s Vieja Skina and UK’s Chainska Brassika will share the stage with Canada’s finest, like Montreal’s funk monster The Brooks, and Victoria’s soul powerhouse, The Leg-Up Program. All shows are all ages and fully licensed. Check skafest.ca for more festival shows to experience.

Spectacular music in a breathtaking setting
T
his is the festival you have heard about for so long and been meaning to go to. Don’t miss it this year! Music by the Sea at Bamfield is a series of 11 concerts from July 20 to 28. Audiences are in awe of the quality and diversity. Each concert includes classical and contemporary solo and chamber music as well as sophisticated jazz and alternative music. Superb acoustics and a spectacular view of the West Coast of Vancouver Island’s mystic, bold Pacific right behind the performers makes this the most inspiring venue anywhere in the Pacific Northwest – an intimate musical experience in a breathtaking setting. The concerts take place in the Rix Centre at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre. This is a spectacular venue, with a scallop-shaped roof and a three-story glass wall that looks out to the Pacific and Barkley Sound. Unlike most festivals, where at any given concert, there is a specific artist or group performing that evening, Music by the Sea creates a ‘company’ of artists — both classical and jazz — from all
across Canada, and from around the world. The artists reside at Bamfield for the entire festival, and perform in a number of collaborations throughout the festival. Each concert includes a variety of performers, including jazz and classical music, with the sun setting over Barkley Sound as their backdrop — while audiences recline in comfortable chairs sipping fine wine or a glass of beer. This is a smorgasbord of music and awe-inspiring views. There is nothing quite like it anywhere else in the world. Music by the Sea at Bamfield is one of those events that requires real planning to attend — getting there and staying there can be a challenge, but well worth the effort. Audiences continue to tell us they have been spoiled by these concerts and cannot imagine anything better. There is an abundance of helpful information for accommodation and transportation at musicbythesea.ca You’ll also find programs and tickets. Box office agents can assist you as well — phone: 250-728-3887.

For the Love of Africa Society is a Victoria-based charity, active in Victoria since 2004. Projects for 2018-19 include construction of a fiveroom school Maasai village near Makuyuni and Arusha. In total, over 320 Massai children will be able to attend school. The school is recognized by the Ministry of Education. Funding was provided to drill a 140 metre well for a flow of 10 gallons per minute that is of drinking quality standard, and construction of a pumphouse and purchase of a power unit. The water will supply the Nashipay Massai School and local people living in the Boma. Funding was also supplied to finish a three-classroom school, including washroom amenities for the Ndachi people. Presently children attend and sit on dirt floors to get their education. With completion of the school, the children will have proper facilities to further their education. A small team will be going to Tanzania in May 2019 to assist with the completion of this project. See: fortheloveofafrica.ca for a list of past projects.
UrbaCity Challenge — Game On!
S
ee a whole new side of your city with The UrbaCity Challenge — Victoria’s downtown adventure race. On Sunday, Sept. 22, hundreds of racers will hit the streets and take on unique Challenge Stations — all to benefit Island Prostate Centre. One Day. Many Events. After setting out from the Crystal Gardens at the Victoria Conference Centre, racers must use clues on their maps to find Challenge Stations scattered across local businesses and public spaces. UrbaCity Challenge Stations are eclectic tests of physical fitness, brain power and problem-solving. Each Challenge Station is a mystery until race day, so racers need to act fast to find and finish each station. Depending on the Challenge Station, UrbaCity racers might need to get artistic, navigate a maze, crack a code or piggy-back their partner!
Choose Your Own Adventure in Teams of 2 or 4 Co-operation is the order of the day as each UrbaCity Challenge Station requires teams to work together. Teams of two can choose from the Fun or Fierce category, depending on how intense they
like their race. Local businesses compete in the four-person Corporate Face-Off category: a great way to build team spirit! Supporting the Island Prostate Centre All charity dollars raised benefit the Island Prostate Centre, helping local men and their families on Vancouver Island. As a non-profit exclusively funded by donations, Island Prostate Centre relies on UrbaCity and other community partners to continue their vital work providing early detection, counselling and care. In total, UrbaCity racers, sponsors and donors have raised over $300,000 for the Island Prostate Centre. UrbaCity is looking to add to that in 2019, with a goal of $75,000. The more racers fundraise, the more perks they get: higher donations bring in bonus prize draws, time reductions and the ability to skip particularly tricky stations. A financial commitment to charity can mean the difference between first and second place! Are you ready for an epic adventure in downtown Victoria? Visit UrbaCity.ca for information and to register.
