A
nother year and another new show. Full speed ahead to the 13th annual Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular. What better way to celebrate the season than with tickets to this dazzling spectacle. Fast moving and colourful, this show will take you on an emotional journey through a wide variety of music and dance, from rock and roll to Broadway, jazz and classical, interwoven with touching readings and stories. This year’s spectacular show includes musical medleys of well known songs by Billy Joel, Gloria Estefan, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin, a nostalgic war-time set, © McKinnon Photography
a Broadway medley of Singin’ in the Rain songs, music from Amelie, Bing Crosby’s classic White Christmas as well as many more classical hits and Christmas favourites. Beautiful costumes in a variety of styles have begun to arrive. “Once I had completed the task of selecting the music for the 2019 show, I turned my head towards the visual colours of the stage. After researching the many styles of music you will experience this season, I was able to start selecting costumes,” says show creator, producer and director, Katy Bowen-Roberts. The cast was selected in June after several days of auditions in Vancouver. “We are lucky to have so much incredible talent in B.C. One of my goals with the show is to provide employment for these artists right here on Vancouver Island,” says Katy. Katy spends all year working on the creation of each new show, but the cast are only together for five weeks. “I’m excited
for Nov. 18, when the ensemble is finally together and we can actually see our work on stage.” This show is popular and in demand. A favourite among bus tour groups, staff parties, family and friend reunions, and festive celebrations. Book early so you don’t miss this exciting holiday event! Visit: yellowpointchristmasspectacular.ca for details about the show. Tickets are now on sale. The production runs in Courtenay at the Sid Williams Theatre (Dec. 9-10), in Victoria at the McPherson Playhouse (Dec. 14-15) and in Nanaimo at the Port Theatre (Dec. 17-22).

itting across the new Johnson St bridge is something old. The E&N rail yard is a historic site that allows locals to remember a simpler time. These buildings are anything but simple. Built with old-growth beams from the 1800s and colourful red bricks for the facade, these Roundhouse buildings create an inviting environment for the curious. This Holiday season, it’s also a beautiful space for the Nomad Holiday Market. The Nomad Holiday Market draws artists from all over Vancouver Island. These fine makers use their creative talents to create works of beauty for the eyes and sometimes the tummies, too. There will be distilleries,
foodies, crafts, and art. We have some food trucks coming for food and live entertainment from local talent. Located on the E&N property is an old red rail car. This year, we are working with the Cool-Aid Society to fill it full of food and warm clothing for people who need it. The rail car will be open for the duration of the event. Even if you don’t want to shop, please bring by a donation. Last year we gathered over 2000 pounds of food. Let’s see if we can beat that number this year! Cowichan Artisans Fall Studio Tour The Cowichan Artisans are excited to announce their 2019 fall studio tour: Nov. 2 and 3, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
S
pend a day or two experiencing the art and studios of 14 professional, full-time artisans dotted around the Cowichan Valley. See how art is born as each artist opens their studio doors to share experiences and showcase their work. Each member of the Cowichan Artisans aims to inspire those who tour their studios; each piece of work is original and each, a labour of love reflecting the highest standards. “A few years ago, we had a mother/son pair show up late in the afternoon. It turns out she had pulled him from school for the day to do the tour. The son was 12 years old and interested in lots
of different things, all to do with creativity. They did the whole tour, and by the end of the day, they had toured potters’ studios, cut glass, seen a wood turning shop, painters’ studios and ended up at our shop. I think he was heading into a new school the next year, and shop classes were to be an option for him; he just didn’t know which to do. Seeing people actually making their living from creativity, I think was very helpful for him. He left us with lots of ideas,” says Cam Russell of Coventry Woodworks. Laurel Hibbert shares this tour tale… “I had a painting titled “Make A Joyful Sound”. It was a group
of mismatched musicians playing instruments that had no business being together. After one studio tour, I decided to rework the piece. I painted out three of the musicians and a howling dog leaving one lonely mandolin
player singing her heart out. I renamed the piece ‘Gone Solo’. During another studio tour, a visitor was transfixed by the painting. She told me she played the mandolin, but she used to play with three friends. They
had all died, and ‘Now I’ve Gone Solo’. True.” For details about the tour, the artists and the map, see the latest Cowichan Artists brochure or website at: cowichanartisans.com See you on the Tour.

ome and enjoy a day with family and friends at the Mary Winspear Center as First & Last Chance Christmas Craft Shows celebrate their 30th year. We are proud to present an array of unique inspirations from more than 80 West Coast artists and artisans. Enjoy tasty treats by Farms Gate Food while you listen to seasonal live music. This year, First & Last Christmas Craft Shows are excited to be supporting Make-A-Wish Vancouver Island. MakeA-Wish has been granting wishes for Vancouver Island children living with a critical illness for over 35 years. Vancouver Island Director, Simone Conner, has been working to increase awareness and funds for the past four years to continue to grant life-changing wishes, including bringing events like UnWined and Rope for Hope over to the island. Last year was the first time, in over 35 years, that Vancouver Island supported 100% of all island wishes! With events throughout the year, and
the opportunity to be invited to be the supported charity at Craft Shows like First & Last Chance, it allows them to continue to share the magic and impact of wishes with the community. A wish is a vital part of a child’s medical journey, and they are grateful for the support in their mission to grant the wish of every eligible child on Vancouver Island. Used Victoria has generously sponsored First & Last Chance again this year and we will be giving Used Victoria’s purple cloth bags to the first 50 visitors through the doors. So, get into the spirit of Christmas and put on your shopping shoes. Help to support our artists & artisans and experience the finest of handcrafted items you simply won’t find anywhere else.
