DESIGNER FAIR
NOVEMBER 20 + 21
F E R N WO O D N R G
he Owl Designer Fair is a fixture in the Victoria Christmas craft show scene and happens every November in the heart of Fernwood. A thoughtfully curated mix of favourite returning vendors and new up-and-coming makers, it is a one stop shop for the best locally handmade gifts. 15 years ago Emmy-Lou McMillan had a vision to bring unique makers together for a great market experience, and thus
the Owl Fair began. In 2018, she passed the torch to Stephanie, the maker behind the clothing label Dottie Handmade. As a past vendor and Fernwood local, Stephanie knows the Owl well. Stephanie has a passion to support and grow the handmade movement, and to connect the community with its local makers. She is excited to keep one of Victoria’s favourite handmade markets going strong! You might be wondering where the name Owl Fair came from! It
would make sense that the fair should have something to do with Owls right? Well, besides the fact that some of the returning vendors have started making Owl themed products, it was actually just a catchy name that stuck. The ever-changing Owl icon has become a recognizable image associated with the fair. Handmade jewellery, local fashion, art & cards, wooden toys, upcycled creations, leather goods, ceramics, kids clothing, apothecary and more! Come for the one-of-a-kind vendors and stay for the live music, food truck and free craft workshops. Support your friends and neighbours by shopping locally! As the air begins to crisp and harvest slows, it’s time to preserve the last of summer abundance in preparation for a cozy and nourishing winter. West Coast Garlic, a farmer growing on Lek'wejen and WSÁNEĆ lands, is a long-time vendor at the Esquimalt Farmers Market with an abundance of specialty garlic varieties. In hues of purple and pink, locally grown garlic can be found alongside fresh greens, root veg, eggs, beef, and countless local food makers every Thursday eve in Esquimalt Town Square (4 - 6:30pm). Come by the farmers market to do your weekly shopping, share dinner with your family at the food trucks, and meet the folks growing the food that nourishes our bellies. It’s never been more important to support local farmers, makers, and bakers!

HOLIDAY STRESS-BUSTING
M
any people find the holiday season can be stressful. Holiday hosts may bear the brunt of seasonal stress, but the season may also be challenging for those who have lost loved ones or do not have close families to celebrate with. When holiday hustle leads to frayed nerves, there are some things people can do to reduce their stress. • HIT THE GYM The American Society for Exercise Physiologists says exercise has been shown to increase one's sense of wellbeing, mood, self-esteem, and stress responsivity. Stress can rev up adrenaline, and exercise can help relieve any pent-up energy and frustration.
• EAT THE RIGHT FOODS Stay hydrated and eat plenty of fiber, fruits and vegetables. This can help stabilize blood sugar levels and decrease cravings for comfort foods. Do not turn to caffeine, sugary sweets or alcohol to reduce stress, as such foods and beverages may only compound the problem. • SKIP THE NEED TO BE PERFECT Christmas movies and holiday ideals portrayed in advertisements can put undue pressure on the average person. Ignore any perceived pressure to have a perfect holiday season, instead resolving to enjoy the time with family and friends.
• GET AMPLE REST Go to bed and rise at the same time each day. Many adults function best when they get between seven and eight hours of sleep per night, and a good night's rest can help in the fight against stress. • ENGAGE IN ACTIVITIES YOU ENJOY Make time for activities that you like to do, such as crafts, hobbies and listening to music. Take time away from holiday tasks to give yourself a break. Stress can impact the ability to enjoy oneself during the holidays. But stress can be overcome, even during this busy time of year – MC
