Why Now?
hysical Injuries Come in Many Form, Trauma, Pain & Weakness, Arthritis, Disuse and Loss of Ability One of the questions that I am asked regularly is ‘Why now?” The question is usually about pain, back pain. The person feels that they have not being doing anything difference but suddenly they have pain which is possibly also extending into the leg. The simple answer is that things are not the same even if they seem to be. Ligament and disc tissue changes with age and while degeneration is not inevitable there will be some loss of resilience, a tendency to fray. The fibres of the disc in particular tend to develop small tears in their substance. The tight and tidy arrangement that keeps the nucleus in the centre of the disc and the supporting outer ring separate and supportive of each other tends to break down as the chemical nature of the disc also changes. The small tears in the disc can be in several areas but the most troublesome are radial and reach through the substance of the disc towards the two back corners. These are made worse by sitting in a flexed position or prolonged
work bending forwards. The natural shape of the lower lumbar discs is to be rather taller at the front than the back but the flexed position reverse this and put steady stress onto the posterior part of the disc. There is a little more to this but essentially the mechanics of the pelvis and lower back depend to a large degree on postural strength and awareness. This is where treatment of back pain begins. We are committed to listening to the details of your injury and how it is affecting your daily living. Using our experience, we will work with you to establish a treatment plan, set goals, and achieve them.
