4 steps to preplanning at Hatley Memorial Gardens

Cremation is not the only decision you’ll have to make. Choosing between cremation or burial is just one of more than 80 decisions needed to ensure your final plans reflect how you want to be remembered.

HERE’S HOW

Plan your own funeral. As with most products and services, funeral and cemetery costs rise with inflation. For example, the approximate cost of cemetery services alone was $8,000 in 1980, but increased to $18,000 by 2010! Fees will continue to climb over the next few decades.*

THE FINANCIAL BENEFITS DON’T END THERE

By making your own arrangements, you can choose your own budget. You’ll eliminate any risk that your grieving loved ones would spend more than you’d want them to. With prepaid funeral plans, you also have the option to choose a flexible payment schedule. Often, such convenient terms are only available when making your funeral plans in advance. Without a pre-plan in place, your family may have to pay the entire amount at once, due immediately after the services are rendered. Consider this benefit too: If you have insurance or savings, those funds can be gifted as a legacy to your beneficiaries, instead of being used for your final arrangements. It’s a loving gesture that’s both kind and practical. It’s important to note that while your Last Will and Testament is the right place for bequeathing such gifts, it’s not a good place to record wishes about your final

t’s hard enough to think about death without having to consider the financial realities that go along with it. Making the right decisions about funeral and memorial expenses can be especially tough when you’re grieving the loss of a loved one. Funerals and cemetery services cost money - that’s unavoidable - but if you’re smart, you can cut those costs and protect your family for that day when you have to leave them. With well-informed estate planning, you could save thousands of dollars, and spare your spouse and children from a heavy financial and emotional burden.

arrangements. A Will is frequently left unread until after all the ceremonies are over. A proper plan, completed with a preplanning professional, is your only guarantee you’ll have your wishes, your way.

THERE’S EVEN MORE TO GAIN

Making your own end of life plans gives you the opportunity to talk it over and create arrangements that reflect the person you are, the life you’ve lived, and the way you want to be remembered. Your loved ones will face no uncertainty and no undue responsibilities. You will have made a difficult time more comfortable for them down the line. And knowing that can provide you with a sense of comfort right now. * Historic value and potential future value: estimated pricing is based on the price of a lot for two, memorial or monument with base, vaults and interment fees from leading Canadian cemeteries as of Dec 2015. The potential future savings is based on an annual estimated rate of 5% increase in the average price. he best seat in the house isn’t necessarily in front of the flat screen anymore. In fact, today’s range of options in high-quality toilet seats is next level convenience, comfort and luxury. “When it comes to choosing a toilet seat upgrade, the slow-close seat has increased in popularity,” says Michelle Braden, marketing and communications manager for Splashes Bath & Kitchen. “Everyone can relate to the unpleasant experience when the seat slams down, startles you, or wakes someone in the middle of the night.” The BEMIS Elongated Toilet Seat with its Whisper-Close hinge slows the descent of the seat and lid, eliminating loud slams and pinched fingers. Also notable, the Super Grip Bumpers prevent the seat from shifting for greater stability. As far as revolutionizing the way your toddlers learn to use the toilet, young families take heed. The Bemis NextStep potty training seat is a game-changer. Seriously. Nothing but positive feedback admits Braden. “Younger families tell us it’s genius; customers are floored when they see this option. Most parents use the mini toilets or the soft potty ring that sits on the toilet, but those options can be bulky, messy and sometimes slip and slide,” she says. The built-in potty seat secures magnetically into the cover when not occupied, eliminating clutter, while the adult seat remains in use. Easy-Clean hinge allows for quick seat removal for effortless cleaning. Practical and safe, this seat gives your toddler confidence, and you, peace of mind. “If your child gets up late at night, you want to know there is a secure option that they can pull down and easily use,” adds Braden.

“Bidet seats are very common in Asia, Europe and even the Middle East,” says Braden, adding that “over the past five years, they have become very popular in Canada.” When you purchase a Toto Washlet, an electronic bidet seat, not only can you reach

unparalleled personal hands-free hygiene, but you’ll help preserve the environment, too. Think less water use and eliminating toilet paper, especially convenient during the first wave of COVID, when there wasn’t a square to spare. “We’re definitely seeing many customers that are in tune with protecting the planet,” says Braden. “They’re making more tech savvy and environmentally friendly decisions in their home choices, for example, leaning towards choosing a bidet seat that eliminates the need for toilet paper.” Available in a range of price points, the bidet seat provides a practical and affordable option to installing a bidet. Toto, the Cadillac of washlets, offers a new model, the Washlet C2, an integrated cleaning wand with sophisticated features such as oscillating and pulsating dual action spray, and warm air drying with temperature settings. Remote control panel, heated and slow-close seat, auto air deodorizer, and PREMIST, which cleans the bowl prior to use. The Duravit SensoWash Seat meets every requirement for high operating comfort with Rear-, Lady-, and Comfortwash settings and individual adjustment for water, air and seat temperature. Slow-close seat has quick release for easy cleaning, and a power actuated lid and seat function prevents “you left the seat up” tiffs. One of the best options for renters (if you don’t have authority to make changes) is the American Standard Manual AquaWash SpaLet. A non-electrical bidet with a slow close and telescoping elongated seat, dual nozzles for front and back self-cleansing with adjustable spray patterns. Accessible top mount fitting makes for easier installation. Splashes offers a myriad of bathroom fixture seat solutions to appeal to your individual needs. Braden encourages you to try a bidet toilet seat, if you’ve yet to experience the bliss; some of their showroom public bathrooms provide a great opportunity to test out the waters. Re-Developing along Millstream Creek

T

he landscape of Millstream Road is changing with the completed sale of the 81acre property Western Speedway and All-Fun RV and Campground at the foot of Bear Mountain. Local Islander Engineering Ltd. has been utilizing their decades of local experience in Langford to support the civil design and environmental due diligence for this exciting three phase proposed development. A key consideration in the redevelopment is the iconic Millstream Creek bisecting the property. This forms a large band of riparian area. Riparian areas are the environmentally sensitive strips of land adjacent

to the margins of any stream. They are also defined by the Fish Protection Act as streamside protection and enhancement areas, or SPEA. SPEAs are important not only as a critical habitat for wildlife – they also provide a buffer between upland areas and the water, where vegetation helps to filter out pollutants, reduce stream bank erosion, and regulate water temperature and oxygen levels. SPEAS can extend to 30 metres beyond the high-water mark or top of a ravine and must be assessed by a Qualified Environmental Professional. Assessment reports for SPEAs are an essential component

of redevelopment project approvals, whether it is a large multi-phase redevelopment, a simple culvert crossing, or construction within the SPEA. As one of the significant local watersheds, Millstream creek is part of a sensitive ecosystem for native cutthroat trout and, potentially, coho salmon. Incredible work has been completed through a collective effort of organizations like the Peninsula Streams Society, alongside many private, public, and non-governmental organizations to create 6.5 kilometers of productive fish habitat, and another estimated 3 to 5 kilometres of additional

spawning and rearing grounds. As a steward of this delicate environment and the life it harbours, the preservation of the Millstream Creek riparian area was an important element of the development’s design. If you are looking to subdivide, develop, or improve a property in Langford, Islander Engineering Ltd. is here to help guide you through any riparian questions. acific FC will host Atlético Ottawa on Sunday, September 19 to mark the official launch Starlight Stadium in Langford. The so-called ‘Starlight Sunday’ will include fun for all members of the family as the stadium is ceremonially launched by representatives of Starlight Investments and Pacific FC. “We’ve been looking forward to having a special day to mark our new stadium name and partnership with Starlight Investments,” said Brad NorrisJones, General Manager, Pacific FC. “We welcome everyone to this ceremonial match to begin this new era in Langford.” The stadium changed names from Westhills Arena in April 2021, but due to COVID-19 an official launch of the newly named Starlight Stadium was put on hold while until the team was

back playing at home. Pacific FC has worked closely with the Province and Island Health to ensure health and safely protocols are in effect. The new protocol allows up to 5,000 fans to be present at the stadium to watch a match. The Canadian Premier League launched the 2021 season in a bubble format in late June in Winnipeg where each team played eight matches. Each of the clubs across Canada will play their remaining 20 matches in their home markets. Pacific FC has had a stellar performance in the first half of the season and have consistently remained in the top few spots in the league. Tickets and information about Starlight Sunday are available on Pacific FC’s website as well as information about home matches to be played through October 2021: pacificfc.canpl.ca
