PACIFIC FC TEAMMATES CELEBRATE WITH THE NORTH STAR SHIELD AFTER DEFEATING FORGE FC BY A SCORE OF 1-0 DURING CANADIAN PREMIER LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME ACTION AT TIM HORTONS FIELD IN HAMILTON, ONT., SUNDAY, DEC. 5, 2021.

fter a decades-long wait, Vancouver Island can finally celebrate a professional sports championship. Pacific FC claimed their first-ever Canadian Premier League trophy on Dec. 5th in Hamilton, providing the Island with its first professional sports trophy since the minor-pro Victoria Maple Leafs won the Lester Patrick Cup in 1966. Pacific FC also became only the second team to win the Canadian Premier League, breaking Forge FC’s attempt at a three-peat in year three of the league.

A long, hard-fought season ended with a 1-0 victory over Forge FC of Hamilton on their home turf. Pacific FC’s goal came from Alessandro Hojabrpour in the second half, after which, the team was able to defend excellently until the final whistle when celebrations erupted in Hamilton and at watch parties on the Island. Next season is now shaping up to be a massive campaign for Vancouver Island’s club. Winning the North Star Shield - the name of the CPL’s championship trophy - means Pacific FC qualifies for the CONCACAF

League, a North and Central American competition, and will now have the opportunity to host matches against international opponents at Starlight Stadium, alongside their CPL schedule. The success on the field this season, coupled with the opportunity to have fans back in the stands, has allowed the club and its supporters the opportunity to continue to build a strong foundation together. Ending the season as champions also means there is plenty of celebrating to come once the team regroups back

home in the new year. Pacific FC’s 2021 season will always be remembered on Vancouver Island for many reasons: hosting the Vancouver Whitecaps and beating them 4-3, making it all the way to the Canadian Championship semi-final losing 2-1 to Toronto FC, and winning back-to-back games on the road in the playoffs to win their first-ever CPL title. 2022 is now looking to be even bigger and better for the club; season ticket sales are up, stadium expansion is on the way, and being champions

brings new exhilarating challenges and opportunities for everyone on the field and filling the stands at Starlight Stadium. Based on the community excitement around Pacific FC, it looks like Vancouver Island sports fans won’t have to wait another 55 years to celebrate another championship. At this rate, they might not even have to wait another five with how the club is progressing. pacificfc.canpl.ca

t is no secret that the weather has been different this year. From heat domes and the smoke of forest fires during summer to the atmospheric river that did its’ best to wash away the Malahat in November. Throughout this, construction activities and development has done its’ best to safely continue at full tilt in Langford. During construction activities there are many changes to the local environment which can lead to flooding, sediment runoff, and damage to sensitive habitats. To protect people and the environment through the various stages of a project, Islander Engineering Ltd. will prepare an Environmental Protection Plan (EPP) and / or Construction Management Plan (CMP) for the project.

• Vegetation and Invasive Species Management

AN EMP OR CMP TAKES INTO ACCOUNT:

You will notice some of these controls commonly in the form of black sediment curtains in ditches, white mesh booms along drain culverts, hay bales along runoff channels to catch sedimentation, and yellow spill kits. A well thought out EMP or CMP from Islander Engineering can make all the difference in avoidance or mitigation of a spill, accident, or storm at your Site. If you are looking to subdivide, develop, or improve a property in Langford, Islander Engineering Ltd. is available to develop your Environmental Protection Plan and conduct regular construction monitoring. Our highly qualified and experienced team is always available for a free consultation, quote, or recommendation. Reach out or learn more at islanderengineering.com

• Environmental Sensitivities • Protection of human health and property • Regulatory & Permitting Requirements The EMP or CMP is a document made available to every worker on Site to detail and describe sound environmental protection planning and best management practices. It is meant to be flexible and changing, to reflect the current Site setting. Some of the general environmental protection measures that are considered at every project include: • Waste Management • Spill Protection and Equipment • Archaeological Materials – Chance Find Procedures

Lots of Ways to Celebrate the Season Julie Lawlor Executive Director, WestShore Chamber of Commerce

W

hile holiday celebrations this year still need to include plenty of hand sanitizer, maskwearing and physical distancing, the good news is that we can have holiday celebrations! For example, Santa is back at the Westshore Town Centre! At the time of writing there are still spaces available from December 22-24th. If you missed out this year - or didn’t realise that you could have had pet photos with Santa! – you can be first in line next time by signing up for the Westshore Town Centre newsletter at westshoretowncentre.com Businesses at the Centre and across Langford have extended shopping hours and safety protocols in place so you can enjoy your holiday shopping experience. In addition to the pandemic, many businesses have been managing the

impacts of labour shortages and rising costs, and very much appreciate the fact that you are shopping local. If you are looking for inspiration, you can check out our Member Directory or our list of Best of the WestShore Awards winners and finalists at westshore.bc.ca One of my favourite parts of December is all of the lights. The City of Langford has published a map so that you can do your very own Christmas Light Tour around Langford – there are beautiful public and residential light displays all across the city. You can also walk through a tinsel tunnel until January 1st or take part in outdoor ice skating. To find out more, go to langford. ca and click on the Christmas tree icon. However you are celebrating, all of us at the WestShore Chamber of Commerce wish you a safe and happy holiday season. See you in 2022!
