A FESTIVAL OF

RUNNING

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 29

Bear Mountain Resort Welcomes the Pan Am XC Cup Bear Mountain Golf Resort will be transformed into a world-class cross country course on Saturday, Feb. 29, when national running teams from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean will compete for the coveted Pan Am Cross Country Cup.

T

he athletes will compete in four races — two U20 and two senior races, male and female. The U20 men’s race will be over an 8km distance, and the women athletes will run 6km. Both the senior men and women will run 10km, in what has been described as one of the most challenging courses in Pan Am XC history. “We have 14 countries coming from as far away as Brazil, Bahamas and Peru. There are 126 national team athletes running and a very strong Canadian team to compete for the medals,” says Bruce Deacon, the event general manager. “This is the first time that Greater Victoria has hosted such an international field of cross country runners. In the past, this event has been contested on flat courses, and the Bear Mountain course will definitely test the

athletes who are used to racing on flat grassy fields. This is a tough course.” In addition to the national competition at the Pan Am XC Cup, there are a series of races that are open to the public. The day long running festival includes a community race, a kids’ race (Nations Cup), the Pacific Northwest youth race, the Can Am Masters challenge and the Pan Am Cup races. Participants in the community race will have a chance to run a 5K course, which is comprised of three loops (2k, 1k, 2k) and has all the features of a cross country course including hills, mud and a sand pit. There will be age divisions in five-year categories, chip timing and a participant toque. Clubs and teams also have the chance to compete and win the VIRA Cross Country Cup, presented by the Vancouver Island Runners Association. “This is a chance for local runners to race over the same course as the elite international athletes and to experience the excitement of racing cross country,” explains Deacon. The race for students in grades K to 2, 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 — the Nations Cup — has a challenge where schools will be designated a country and run in t-shirts with the country’s team colours. There are 175 students in the Nations Cup and 22 schools. For older students, grades 9 to 12, there is the

Pacific Northwest Youth Cup, where teams of five boys and five girls can score points to determine the fastest city team. Canada and US rivalry in cross country running will be seen up close at the Can Am Masters Challenge. Canada leads the challenge series over the US 18 to 14, and is undefeated on Canadian soil. Individuals and clubs are invited to compete in the 5km race, which is open to runners over 30. With five year-age categories, this competition is expected to be exciting and intense. “What makes this event so special is that it gives all masters a chance to represent Canada. Anyone over 30 can run the race and count in the scoring against the US. For the average runner, there are few opportunities to race for your country,” adds Deacon, himself a two-time Olympian. This will be the most prestigious international cross country running event that B.C. has ever hosted. Spectators are invited to come and cheer on the participants as they test themselves over the challenging course. “This is a festival of cross country running that you won’t want to miss!” says Deacon.

’m so proud of the progress Langford has made over the past 28 years. We’ve become one of the best places in Canada to raise a family, start a business and take part in recreational activities. 2019 saw the soft opening of the Island Training Centre as well as the newly renovated and expanded Westhills Stadium that can now accommodate up to 6,000 spectators. We’re eager to see new events come to Westhills Stadium, including the 2020 Men’s International friendly match between Canada and rivals Trinidad & Tobago on March 27th, and the HSBC Canada Women’s

Coming soon to Langford are the BoulderHouse indoor climbing gym, new Boxing BC facility, a new shared bicycle/pedestrian network along Irwin and Humpback Roads, and Rowing BC and other non-motorized watersport opportunities for the public on Finlayson Arm. On behalf of the City of Langford, Council, staff and our community partners, I welcome you to enjoy all of the excellent year-round recreation amenities that Langford has to offer.

With a little something for everyone and more development on the horizon, the West Shore could make the perfect place for you to call home. FROM THE VICTORIA REAL ESTATE BOARD

o longer the distant cousin to the City of Victoria, the communities that comprise the West Shore (Sooke, Colwood, Highlands, Langford and Metchosin) have come into their own in recent years, each with a clear identity and unique offering for their residents and guests. “One of the features that sets the West Shore apart from Downtown Victoria or the Peninsula is the amount of space for growth and development here,” notes Victoria Real Estate Board President Sandi-Jo Ayers. “While the mountainous Highlands and rural Metchosin offer seclusion and nature, bustling Langford and charming Colwood offer a hub for shopping and an impressive selection of amenities. Sooke is a hybrid of all the best things, with vibrant community services, a beautiful natural environment and a diverse array of housing opportunities.” Housing in the West Shore is appealing to many home buyers. While the benchmark price of a home in the Victoria core was $858,500 in January, homes in the West Shore were $656,500. A condo in Langford had a benchmark price of $414,000 in January, while a condo in the Victoria Core was $521,000. “Families and first-time buyers are finding opportunity to own their homes in the West Shore,” adds President Ayers. “The area is also attractive for people looking for more space, easy access to outdoor sports, proximity to lakes and the ocean, with brand new builds and a smaller community feel.” Recent improvements to the commuter routes between the West Shore and Downtown, and future improvements such as rail or ferry mass transport, are helping connect the once-distant community to Downtown Victoria. The ability to move easily and efficiently between the communities in the West Shore and the Downtown core makes it even easier for people to choose to move West.

A

s the grey winter weather drags on, it’s easy to curse the clouds. Relief is on the way — Coast Collective Art Centre, located in Colwood, has invited local artists to look for the silver lining in the typical Vancouver Island weather. “Head in the Clouds” is a juried open call exhibit and will take place from Feb. 26 to Mar. 8, with a meet-the-artists reception on Saturday, Feb. 29 from 1 to 3 p.m. Twenty-eight artists working in a variety of media, from watercolour to oil, acrylics to textiles, pastel to pyrography and sculpture to photography have put together an exhibition that will inspire a new appreciation for cloudy days.

The works are sometimes calming, sometimes dramatic and sometimes whimsical. From soft sunrises to vivid sunsets, stormy weather and calm days, the artists have captured clouds in a variety of moods and have even allowed their imaginations to run wild in airy flights of fancy. The Coast Collective Art Centre hosts a variety of open call exhibitions each year, challenging artists to create work based on a variety of themes. The gallery team loves to put together a selection of themes to inspire creativity — it is always intriguing to see what sparks an artist’s imagination. Visitors to the gallery and their interpretations of

the artwork add a final depth to the experience. The South Island has a fabulous community of artists and people who value and appreciate the arts, and the region is all the richer for it. Visitors inspired by these works of art can take part in a variety of classes and workshops, including a course about painting dramatic skies. Information about upcoming exhibitions, calls to artists, classes, and workshops, can be found at: coastcollective.ca. See and support local artists at The Coast Collective Art Centre, located in Colwood, at 103-318 Wale Rd. (next to the Holiday Inn), open from 11 to 5, Wednesday to Sunday.
