Fabulous OUTDOOR Amentities LAKES

No Matter where you live in Langford, the fact is you can come home from work and within 10 minutes, be swimming, fishing or lying on the beach of one of Langford’s three lakes -- this is something to treasure. Florence Lake is one of Langford’s jewels. It’s the perfect spot for a swim to cool off in the summer, or to hike around in the autumn, when changing trees create a courful, natural spectacle. Across town, Glenn Lake is perfect for boating and fishing. You can launch a boat on the south side, or cast your line from the fishing platfom to the north. Langford Lake is the city’s largest lake, and has the most amenities. This exceptionally clean lake is a popular swimming, boating and fishing destination for residents and visitors. Numerous boardwalks and shore access points as well as a boat launch allow for great fishing opportunities, and several beaches and swimming platforms offer perfect spots to go for a dip in the summer heat, or simply float in a tube.

Part of Langford’s charm is its natural beauty, with nearly every outdoor amenity a nature lover could imagine, just minutes away.

D

ense old-growth forests speak from a deeply spiritual and historical place. Pristine lakes invite visitors to walk, fish, swim and bask along their shores. Winding trails call to seasoned hikers and casual strollers to engage with nature along the way. A magnificent mountain demands commitment and fortitude to reach its summit, and rewards those who get there with spectacular vistas from its peak. Langford is truly a special place. Parks, lakes and trails are the places people go when they want to unwind, de-stress and enjoy the natural world, and Langford offers a host of opportunities to do just that.

PARKS

Langford residents can relax and paly in a variety of park settings. With provincial, regional, sports and urban parks to choose from, there’s no excuse not to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Goldstream is Langford’s provincial park, and is full of fun things to explore, including a rare bastion of old-growth forest, a picnic area, a salmon river, a waterfall and its crowning glory, the spectacular Mt.

Finlayson, with numerous trails leading to its summit. Not far away, Mt. Wells, a 123-hectare wilderness park, offers hikers a steep and challenging climb to its almost 1200 foot summit. For a less strenuous climb, Mill Hill regional park’s 600 foot summit is an urban oasis of Garry oaks and fir trees, all rewarded by spectacular views from the top. For those looking for some team action, there are several sports parks in the area including the Tom Gordon Memorial Field and Ed Fisher Memorial Field. Evenings and weekends, tiny T-ballers to high school seniors can be seen in earnest competition. Langford’s urban parks are a great place to have lunch or bring the kids to play. For instance, halfway between Downtown and Langford Lake, Centennial Park is the perfect place for a family gathering, baseball game or tennis match. When the summer sun is shining, kids love the firefighter-themed splash park. Veteran’s Memorial Park, situated on Goldstream Avenue, is the site of many of the city’s annual festivals and events; it’s also the ocation of the exteremely popular “Music in the Park” held on Sunday afternoons throughout the summer.

TRAILS

The City of Langford encourages residents and visitors to wander around the whole city on foot or by pedal power. From challenging mountain climbs for experienced hikers to walking trails and boardwalks surrounding the lakes for leisurely strolls, you’ll find a trail that suits you perfectly. At the time of its incorporation in 1992, the City of langford had only 1,486 linear metres of trails within its borders. By 2010, that figure had risen to an astounding 22,799 linear metres of awardwinning trails. – With permission, from “City of Langford, Living the Lifestyle”, by Michael Wicks, 2011. bluebeetlebooks.com

t’s hard to beat spring on the South Island. After the drabness of winter’s brown, bare branches and last year’s sodden leaves, the brilliant colours of spring delight the eye. With cherry blossom counts in swing and crocuses, daffodils and tulips bursting from the ground, Vancouver Island is a riot of colour while much of Canada is still cloaked in white. Many artists are inspired by the springtime glory of our region, and for the twelfth year running, the Coast Collective has prepared a juried showcase of bold and beautiful floral artwork in its annual Bloom exhibition. Attract all kinds of birds to your yard or patio

There are around 2,059 bird species on the continent of North America. Red-winged blackbirds, wrens, bushtits, robins, towhees and sparrows are among the most commonly seen birds. Making a backyard hospitable to birds can increase the chances for sightings and hearing their sweet songs. Birds require a supply of fresh, clean water for drinking and bathing. By setting up a bath, homeowners can attract not only seed-loving birds, but those that don’t eat seeds and wouldn’t normally congregate around feeders. Not all bird baths are constructed the in the same fashion. There are four general types: standing pedestal, hanging bath, deck-mounted and ground-level. In general, the lower a bird bath is to the ground, the more likely birds are to use it. Most natural sources of water that birds use are on or near the ground, therefore, ground-level bird baths may be the best investment. It is important to keep the water in a bird bath shallow, around two inches or less. This enables birds to splash around safely and wade in. Rough stone or a bird bath modified with pea gravel or rocks can give birds steady footing. Place the bird bath in the shade if possible, to ensure the water is cool and fresh. Locate it by a tree so the birds can hop up to a branch and preen afterward.

A bird bath is more attractive if it has a dripping or moving water feature, as this is often irresistible to birds. Another way to ensure the bath will be used is to keep it clean and maintained. Change the water every day or two. Rinse off the bath to remove droppings, bugs and debris. Once birds learn there is a comfortable bath nearby, they may be more apt to visit a yard and may even become frequent guests. - MC Lee Valley offers car delivery for express pick-up. WORLD RUGBY & RUGBY CANADA

R

Women’s Sevens Game Postponed

ugby Canada confirmed the postponement of the 2020 HSBC Canada Women’s Sevens, originally scheduled for May 2-3, 2020 in Langford, due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The tournament has been postponed until later in the year. This game would have marked the sixth consecutive year that Langford and Westhills Stadium served as host to the Canadian stop on the global tour. The tournament, in partnership with the City of Langford, has become a community favourite that regularly draws over 6,000 sports enthusiasts and rugby fans to Westhills Stadium on an annual basis. “Hosting one of only two ‘stand-alone’ women’s events on the World Series is a point of pride for Rugby Canada. We are disappointed to have to postpone the tournament, and recognize the investment and commitment put in by our players, coaches, officials, staff, and City of Langford and fans. However, as this unprecedented situation continues to evolve, the health and welfare of all involved remains our top priority, said Allen Vansen, Rugby Canada CEO. Fans who have purchased tickets to the postponed HSBC Canada Sevens will retain their seats for the rescheduled event. Once a decision is made on the rescheduled date, fans will have the option of a refund by request or to retain their purchased seats for the new dates. If a decision is made to cancel the event, a refund will be made available to all ticket purchasers. Rugby Canada is working

diligently with World Rugby to explore options and will provide an update on the tournament status shortly. Rugby Canada thanks fans for their patience and understanding as they navigate through this evolving situation. World Rugby Chairman Sir Bill Beaumont said: “We stand in solidarity with the global rugby family and people around the world at this exceptional and difficult time, and I will ensure we continue to do everything in our power to protect the wellbeing of the global rugby family and the wider public. “Taking the appropriate measures that mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in line with government and public health agency responses and advice is paramount. This has underpinned our decision, taken in consultation with our unions, to suspend these World Rugby tournament activities with immediate effect, including the cancellation of the World Rugby U20 Championship following conversations with our friends at the Italian federation. “We are also in close dialogue with the IOC relating to the conclusion of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games rugby sevens qualification, specifically options to replace the final Repechage tournament, should that be required. We have two

women’s and one men’s teams left to qualify and are currently considering all options to ensure a fair and credible conclusion to the qualification process. “Looking at a longer-term strategy, we are in continual dialogue with our unions, regions and the players’ association relating to the wider global impact on rugby activities, including financial implications, driven by government and health authority measures to combat the spread of COVID-19.

“At this extraordinary time, we are united in our commitment to finding ways of ensuring that on-field activity can resume as soon as it is safe and possible to do so. To that end, the World Rugby Executive Committee is driving the implementation of a detailed action plan that will guide us through this challenging period as a sport unified across the international and domestic environments. –world.rugby/sevens-series/news

he City of Langford will add another recreational amenity to its roster this fall with the $1.8-million Jordie Lunn Bike Park at Irwin Ponds Park on Irwin Road. The 14-acre park is named after Lunn, a Langford resident and worldrenowned Vancouver Island freerider who died while trail riding in Mexico last October. Langford Mayor Stew Young said the park will be the only one of its kind in Canada, as it will be dedicated to biking and offer a variety of features designed to please local biking enthusiasts and athletes from around the country. “Not only will this bike park allow for Langford to attract world-class cycling events, it will also provide biking and cycling opportunities for families and those of all ages and abilities for many years to come,” Young said. The park is a joint effort of Langford, which provided the land, Westhills Land Development, the Wheelhouse Cycling Society, the Jordie Lunn Memorial Fund, Belmont High School and Hazelwood Construction. The park will feature a three-kilometre cyclo-cross course (an off-road trail with a variety of obstacles), a world-class pump track (riders navigate by generating momentum through body movement rather than pedalling), three sections of bike jump runs, a bike-skills area and a clubhouse with meeting space, washrooms, showers, bike wash stations and storage. The park, which is expected to be complete this fall, will be located beside a $1.6-million trail network that is under construction. Young said the project will help turn that part of Langford into an eco-recreation hub, and

pay tribute to Lunn, who devoted much of his life to cycling, built bike parks and trails, and established camps and clinics for kids. In a statement, the Lunn family noted they are committed to providing a legacy in Jordie Lunn’s name for children and youth to be safe and active, and enjoy building their biking skills. Young said the new park, trail network and proposed performing arts centre and museum illustrates the city’s new brand. Langford’s new tagline, unveiled this week, is “where it all happens.” “We’ve never really branded ourselves before, but then we have some pretty cool stuff going on out here — Langford has changed,” he said, adding the term “Dogpatch” is rarely heard these days. “We have new schools, new infrastructure, new recreational facilities and we’re the fastestgrowing community in B.C.,” he added. “There’s a lot happening here. This is the busiest I’ve been in 30 years.” –aduffy@timescolonist.com
