Protecting your health & safety A Message from Mayor Stew Young
O
Langford Mayor Stew Young says urgent measures need to be taken to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
n behalf of myself and Langford Council, I want to thank everyone for their efforts in the fight against COVID-19. The way our community has come together during this trying time has been truly inspiring, and I hope that everyone will continue to stay home and stop the spread. In an effort to support our residents, the City of Langford has partnered with Forbes Pharmacy to establish the COVID-19 Helpline – a free service for all West Shore residents who have COVID-19 questions or require medical support or COVID-19 testing. To date, we have answered more than 1300 calls, and have conducted more than 45 inhome COVID-19 tests. City staff have been working hard to ensure that residents and businesses feel supported while navigating through the effects of this pandemic. You may have seen our COVID-19 community outreach vans around Langford. These vans are there to provide COVID-19 information and support to our businesses and residents, while also making face masks and shields available for sale at cost. Over the past weeks, City staff members have been visiting businesses to ensure that they have what they need to protect the health and safety of staff and customers. We’ve made certain supplies, such as directional arrows and physical distancing reminder floor decals
available to our business community at no cost. In addition, we have been conducting phone calls to residents to asses their wellbeing and to connect them with various community organizations if they need support. We have also hired additional Bylaw officers to assist with informing residents and businesses of safe physical distancing measures and other safety reminders especially while outside using Langford parks and trails. This past Saturday, I had the pleasure of participating in the Cars4COVID event, which raised funds to support healthcare first responders and COVID-19 research. It was fantastic to see the show of support and appreciation for our front line and essential service workers. I am so proud of our community and everything we are doing to support each other during this challenging time. We all must continue to stay home when we can, and please maintain safe physical distancing while shopping or using our local parks and trails. If you are looking for fun and creative physical distancing activities to do with your family, visit Langford.ca/ PhysicalDistancingActivities. On behalf of the City of Langford, I hope that you are staying home and staying safe.

“Our beers are as good as our cause, and are starting to sell well, but we need more support. – Graham Hafey
Drive-In Beer C V2V Black Hops Brewing was started in June 2018 by military veteran, Graeme Hafey, as way of contract-brewing beer and selling it to raise money for military and first responder PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) programs.
urrently, over $5,000 was raised and donated to three different veterans’ charities. Black Hops personnel did not receive any of this money and was reliant on many volunteers to make it work. Having recently acquired a microbrewery and lounge in Langford, B.C., formerly The Axe and Barrel, V2V Black Hops aims to raise money for the same programs, but in a much more sustainable way.
The Logo you Love, the Comfort you Crave.
After the brewery purchase was complete, Black Hops was about to open the doors of its newly remodeled, ‘quasi-military style tasting room when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, effectively closing the doors before they opened. In a style and manner often attributed to military members and veterans, V2V Black Hops set-up the first ‘beer drive-through’. Customers pull-up, order and receive their beer order with zero contact and while in the safety of their vehicles. Black Hops also has an online system for ordering beer and delivers the next day in one of two military trucks, including an authentic US Army HumVee! Visit: v2vblackhopsbrewing.ca to order and support this great cause. According to Graeme, “our beers are as good as our cause, and are starting to sell well, but we need more support. We offer free beer delivery to the Westshore, and free delivery in Greater Victoria on orders of $40 or more. “I
am responding to the notice in your newspaper regarding those who are working on the Front Lines of Health Care and the many other persons providing for us during this unprecedented time of pandemic. Dr. Rachel Staples of Urban Smiles Dentistry, was confined to her home after attending the Dental Conference in Vancouver in early March. While confined, she used her time to order respirators, plexiglas facial shields and booties. She had gowns and caps sewn up locally so she didn’t have to rely on disposable gowns and caps. She met all the requirements of the College of Dental Surgeons and the B.C. Health Authority so she could open
her office to be available for patients of Victoria and vicinity with dental emergencies. The need is there and has kept Dr. Staples and her associate Dr. Brett Livingstone, their assistants and office manager busy since opening. In my mind, both doctors and staff are dedicated heroes. There are so many front line workers who are risking their lives and those of their families to ensure that our population remains as healthy as they can be amidst this unforeseen pandemic. Thank you for this opportunity to say how grateful I am to all who are giving so much for the benefit of others. – Carol-Ann Staples (yes, her mother!)

New season, new faces for Pacific Football Club P
“Our young athletes are getting weekly workouts and skills drills helping to keep them fit and engaged with soccer.” – James Merriman
acific Football Club looks forward to inviting soccer fans to watch the start of their second season at Westhills Stadium – whenever that may be. The club welcomed new head coach Pa-Modou Kah in the beginning of the year, a former top player who coached previously in the MLS. “The health and safety of everyone in our community is the most important thing at this time,” said Kah. “Once we are in a different circumstance, we can’t wait to play at home in Langford and have the game of football bring smiles back to people’s faces.” Kah’s inaugural season with Pacific includes an impressive roster of new players and many returning fan favourites. Newly signed talent includes Canadian Premier League star Marco Bustos from Winnipeg and Mexicanborn Alejandro Diaz. In goal, Callum Irving joined Pacific returning to BC from Ottawa where he played three seasons with the Ottawa Fury. “As a West Coast kid, there’s nothing like living and playing out here close to my family and friends,” said Irving. “The team that Pacific is building makes it an exciting squad to be part of with high aspirations in the CPL.”
CONGRATULATIONS LANGFORD for your conƟnued commitment to sports and recreaƟon excellence and providing world class community recreaƟon and sport faciliƟes.
ISLANDER E N G I N E E R I N G
Bustos, Diaz and Irving join returning players such as Marcel de Jong, Noah Verhoeven, Matthew Baldisimo, Alessandro Hojabrpour and ‘keeper’ Nolan Wirth. The mandate of Pacific FC is to enhance the game of soccer on Vancouver Island overall, and although on-field play is currently on hold, the players of the future are hard at work. The Trident Development Program, a training program that supports the development of girls and boys ages 8-18, has moved to online programming to keep youth busy at home. “While we would love to be training our Trident kids in person at the Island Training Centre, we’ve come up with the next best thing under the current restrictions,” said James Merriman, associate head coach and technical director. “Our young athletes are getting weekly workouts and skills drills helping to keep them fit and engaged with soccer.” Pacific FC has quickly become a part of the sporting community of Langford and beyond and looks ahead to playing and coaching in the region and welcoming back their enthusiastic fans.

sing art to share their ideas, children aged 3 to 12 have explored ecosystems here in British Columbia and around the world, discovering how individual plants and species are interconnected in diverse and complex ways. From paintings of tiny bugs to mighty bears collaged from recycled materials, this online celebration encourages us to think about the Web of Life and where our species can fit within it. During one of our classes, we worked on how to draw a spider web while using watercolour paint, acrylic paint, pastels, crayons, pencil crayons and gold leaf. We
used art paper and watercolour paper to create the art on. The age of the 16 students in my class varies from 5 to 8 and the oldest student Simon is 10 years old. They are all amazing kids and they create the most beautiful pieces every week. They are the reason why I love art and creating art. In my opinion, children’s art is the best art! coastcollective.ca/annual-earth-daychildrens-art-show/ –Deborah van Hattem-Koff, Amber Academy Youth Fine Arts Society coastcollective.ca

Some comments from participants. “The Entrance To Hope” is inspired by looking the heart of the tree. You can ask a question to the heart and it gives you helpfulness and pleasure just like hope. If you go inside of it, you will see the place you want to imagine. The blossoms give everyone a smile even when you are so sad. The tree is tangled because that way it looks so magical then it is.” Seren, Age 10, the artist of “The Entrance To Hope” “I am 11 years old and in Grade 6 at Dunsmuir Middle School. I love to sketch and draw. For this entry, I sketched by hand in pencil, outlined in fine marker and coloured in using alcohol based marker. I hope you like my submission as it was fun to draw.
