Spectrum’s Young Frankenstein n a 2010 Los Angeles Times interview, Mel Brooks recalled the initial conversation with Gene Wilder that supplied the seed of the idea for their 1974 cult classic film, Young Frankenstein. Wilder and Brooks were having coffee on the set of Blazing Saddles and Wilder suggested the idea of a Frankenstein movie.

“Not another!” Brooks scoffed.

“There’s been the son of, the cousin of, the brother-in-law. We don’t need another Frankenstein.” Wilder pressed on with his concept — what if the grandson of Dr. Frankenstein wanted nothing to do with

the family whatsoever? “That’s funny,” said Brooks, and the two never looked back.

Brooks directed, they wrote the screenplay together, and of course, Wilder starred as the renowned New York professor of anatomy, Dr. Fronkensteen, who insists on this alternate pronunciation to distance himself from his infamous Transylvanian relatives.

The movie masterfully spoofed the horror film genre and is chalk-full of oft referenced gags and one-liners, from “Put…zee candle…back!” to “What knockers!” to the whinnying of horses every time Frau Blucher’s name is uttered aloud.

Skip ahead 30 years to 2004. Hot on the heels of the huge success of his first Broadway musical, The Producers, Brooks was eager to follow up with another project for the stage. The answer? Brooks sat down and wrote an all new musical score to go with the iconic plot, including characters and dialogue, for his classic screenplay and Young Frankenstein — The Broadway Musical, was born.

Opening in New York on Nov. 8, 2007, the delightfully hysterical production enjoyed a successful Broadway run, earning four Tony nominations and winning the Outer Critics Circle award

for best musical. Brooks, who also garnered a Grammy nomination for the Broadway soundtrack, had solidified his newfound renown as a legitimate Broadway producer (the irony is thick).

Young Frankenstein went on to successful productions in London’s West End and with international touring companies before the rights were recently released for amateur and school groups to license.

Spectrum’s Young Frankenstein runs March 1, 2, 7, 8, 9 at 7:30 p.m., and March 10 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available through Spectrum School’s office: 250-479-8271.

he West Coast College of Massage Therapy (WCCMT), a pioneer and leader in the massage therapy industry, is helping to meet the growing demand for highly trained registered massage therapists. WCCMT’s commitment to quality education exceeds Provincial requirements, ensuring that graduates are competitively sought out for a variety of clinical settings. After completing their licensing exam, WCCMT graduates have a variety of employment opportunities.

Most Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) are self-employed contractors who either work in large multi-disciplinary clinics with chiropractors, physiotherapists, naturopathic doctors, Chinese medicine doctors and acupuncturists.

Some choose to open their practices either in their homes or other commercial space. RMTs may also see patients in extended care facilities or in their homes, providing mobile massage services. The extensive population demographic that WCCMT students are exposed to while in school enables them to confidently step into a variety of clinical opportunities.

To maintain registration and remain in good standing with the College of Massage Therapists of BC (CMTBC), all RMTs must complete 24 credits of continuing education courses every two-year period. Most RMTs select continuing education courses that further training in specific areas of practice.

Continuing education courses are reviewed for approval from the CMTBC before they are granted credit approval.

This process ensures the courses RMTs are taking are of a high quality and calibre.

The list of possible continuing education courses (CECs) is extensive, like muscle energy techniques, manual lymph drainage and fascial techniques.

CECs may also focus on specific conditions like pregnancy, cancer, geriatric focus or baby massage.

The CMTBC supports further education on practice building courses that ensure RMTs are able to run larger clinics and deal with multiple billing agencies or other organizations like ICBC, WCB and Blue Cross.

Professional practice courses with education in maintaining proper professional boundaries and self care are also widely supported as an important aspect of continuing education for RMTs. WCCMT’s rigourous program and wide variety of clinical opportunities give graduates the opportunity to determine which specific area of massage they would like to focus on when registered.

VICTORIA CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC

A Summer Like No Other very summer, the Victoria Conservatory of Music (VCM) offers a musical education unlike any other in the city.

“There really isn’t anybody else locally who does what we do,” said Kelsey Gilker, summer coordinator.

“Our Summer Academy really stands alone.”

Beginning early July, the VCM Summer Academy is a series of intensive one to two week programs for students of varying abilities, and is largely focused on students who are serious about their instrument of choice.

“These programs are broad range,” said Gilker. “We have junior programs for beginning students, adult programs for adult amateur artists, and intensive streams for high school, post-secondary, and even post-grad students.”

This year’s offerings include strings, piano, voice, theory and guitar.

“Students are in session for six to eight hours day and they learn so much in that time,” said Gilker.

“They’re exposed to world class faculty and other high level students who are working toward the same goals. Many of our students make friends that they keep forever, and they create important connections with other artists.”

Summer Academy students gain new musical perspectives based on exposure to different techniques and repertoire. For many, the most exciting benefit may be opportunities to perform.

Summer Academy classes also take advantage of the VCM’s unique performing spaces and stages – Robin and Winnifred Wood Recital Hall,

Metro Theatre, and the worldrenowned performance venue, Alix Goolden Performance Hall.

Summer Academy programs are taught by VCM faculty, with special guest instructors from across Canada and abroad. The cost varies, depending on program, and bursaries are available.

Laughing and Learning estmont’s middle school program is trying something new — ‘intercession weeks’.

Students have the opportunity to dive into experiences — both intensive and meaningful.

Working with Westmont’s connections to community, the school reached out to three outstanding local professionals.

Red Seal chef and head of Knuckle and Claw Catering, David Simms stepped up to work with students on their culinary skills.

Shiraz Higgins, a Metchosin based videographer with a passion for creative innovation, relished the opportunity to work with a group of enthusiastic Westmont students.

Taylor Mar came to the students with a deep knowledge of local environment and ecosystems and a lifetime of experience in bush craft.

Westmont students chose the area of exploration they were most interested in and headed to offsite locations to experience a week of immersion.

At the end of the week, each group gave a presentation to parents and their peers on what they done, learned and felt about the week.

There was no waiting with David Simms — as soon as the group was in the kitchen, they rolled up their sleeves, washed their hands and began prepping some amazing dishes. A whirlwind tour of the culinary world took students from the spicy goodness of Mexico to the wonderful tastes of Italy. Sam learned that “you can make something really great with only seven ingredients!”

David engaged the students in where they come from, their journey around the world, the culture behind the food, how the ingredients interact, the effect they

have on our bodies, why we eat some things and not others, and the understanding of good nutrition, cost and economy in food prep.

The videography program learned how to capture their vision for a five-minute movie in one week. Brainstorming produced a wish list drawn from everyone’s favourite blockbusters. With one week to script, rehearse, film and edit -— how could they do it?

“For me, the hardest thing was the planning. In the end, it paid off and made the filming more efficient,” Tristan, a grade seven student, admitted.

When parents and peers gathered to see the finished product, there was great delight, laughter and applause.

With a less frenetic pace, but no less effort, the bush craft group spent the week in the wilds of Metchosin learning about the natural environment. It was

clear the students gained a deeper understanding for our environment and a level of respect for the world they live.

There was a lot of teamwork in building a shelter and fire from materials in the woods, and delight in utilising elements — a deer antler for chiselling, discarded metal as an improvised oven, gathered ferns to insulate a shelter bed.

Conversations and discussions with Taylor deepened student understanding and knowledge of their world, even as their hands and eyes were engaged in building and creating.

As Westmont continues to pursue their vision of being a world-class Montessori school, it is programs and initiatives that lead the way.
