How to use the internet more safely
T
he world relies on computerized devices and the internet as much as ever. As of the third quarter of 2019, there were more than 4.33 billion active internet users, according to DataReportal. That marked a 327 million user increase from the year prior. At 8.2 percent, the growth of active internet use is now eight times faster than the overall worldwide population growth. The internet is used for professional, personal and educational purposes. The COVID-19 pandemic increased the global reliance on the internet. Without the internet, it would be much more challenging for people to work and maintain connections with their loved ones during the pandemic. As more time is spent online, it is essential that all internet users refresh their memories on safety practices. The first step toward safety is to use a secure connection. Your local internet connection can be a weak point that allows data to be compromised. Use a passwordprotected router and Wi-Fi connection to improve security. • Consider using a VPN. VPN stands for “virtual private network.” When you use a VPN, it encrypts all data from the moment it leaves your computer, tablet or other device and enters the internet. It provides an extra layer against hackers, and also can
provide secure access to the internet even if you are using public Wi-Fi, according to Kapertsky security products. • Protect your passwords. When creating passwords for accounts, do not share them, and also select unique, complicated passwords. Include a mix of numbers, symbols and letters. Avoid using the same passwords for multiple accounts. Longer passwords are stronger; consider using a favourite quote or song lyric. · Enable multi-factor authentication. This security feature makes accounts safer by requiring an extra step before you can log into an account. One example of multi-factor authentication is the random generation of a code that must be entered in addition to the password before accessing an account. · Be careful where you click. There are many lingering risks online, including viruses, spyware bots, Trojan horses, and phishing attacks, according to Microsoft. Always think before opening attachments or clicking on links. Remaining safe when using the internet is even more important as professionals, students and the general public find themselves relying on online services more and more. –MC

Characteristics of effective mentors
here are many ways for people to give back to their communities. Some people may volunteer with a local nonprofit organization, while others may donate to a favourite charity. Established professionals who want to lend a hand can consider becoming a mentor. Mentors play invaluable roles in the lives of millions of young people across the globe. The most successful mentors tend to have certain characteristics that lend themselves to this significant yet rewarding challenge. • ENTHUSIASM: Enthusiasm is essential when mentoring young people. Young people will quickly realize if a mentor is enthusiastic or simply going through the motions. In the latter instance, mentors can quickly alienate the people they’re trying to help if they appear disinterested or give the impression that they’re there because they have to be and not because they want to be. No one has to become a mentor, so professionals who lack the enthusiasm necessary to be a successful mentor can look for other ways to lend a hand.
• LISTENING SKILLS: Though it’s not uncommon for mentors to give advice, it’s also imperative that mentors learn to listen to the people they’re trying to help. While mentors can share their own perspective, it’s important that they also listen to what their mentees have to say. • AVAILABILITY/ACCESSIBILITY: A successful mentor has enough time to make the mentor-mentee relationship worthwhile for both parties. Professionals with especially hectic schedules may not be as available or accessible as they need to be to become successful mentors. Professionals who are flexible and able to routinely meet with their mentees can utilize that accessibility to build strong relationships. • NONJUDGMENTAL: Mentees may be reluctant to open up if they think their mentor is judging, and that reluctance could make it difficult for the relationship to be successful. • DIVERSITY OF EXPERIENCE: Successful mentors tend to have a diversity of experiences or a recognition of the value
of such diversity. A diversity of experience increases the likelihood that mentors can relate to whatever situations their mentees are in. That can be a useful attribute that mentors use to build strong bonds with their mentees. Mentoring is a great way to give back. Though no two mentors are the same, successful mentors often share the same qualities. –MC

ducation opens many doors. Sometimes life throws a person a curveball and education gets put on the back burner. Even if school plans have been derailed for several years, one can explore how to return to school as an adult. Adult students are often described as nontraditional students, while traditional students are those who enroll in a college or university or go on to trade school immediately after graduating from high school. Nontraditional students are those who return to get their degrees as adult learners. According to a 2013 National Study of Prospective Adult Students by the higher education marketing group STAMATS, students over the age of 25 are the fastest-growing segment in higher education. For those people resolving to return to school this year, these tips can help them confront any uncertainty they may have
about cracking the books after a long layoff. • Recognize you’re never too old. If you have the time and the means to attend school, you can likely find a program that can benefit you regardless of how old you may be. • Remember that education can help you get out of a rut. No matter your age or experience, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut. Going back to school can help a person get out of that rut and on a path to something new. A return to school can help professionals earn more money, update their skills or learn a new trade. • Ask for the support of friends and family. Students’ success often depends on a strong support network. Be sure to discuss plans to return to school with a spouse, family members or others who can lend a helping hand. Schooling will take time
out of a schedule and certain responsibilities you handled may have to be taken on by family members. • Explore accessibility. Now more than ever schools are adapting to the changing times by offering an abundance of classes online. Remote learning became a necessity in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it may be an increasingly popular method of conducting classes in the future. For adult learners who worry about juggling time inside of the actual classroom with work and home responsibilities, virtual programs can be the perfect fit. Goals for the new year may include returning to school. Whether a person is completing a diploma program, finishing a degree or learning new skills, there’s no wrong time to continue your education. –MC
