At The Old Farm Market, we want to be a source of information, resources, and transparency. These are uncertain times. Canadians are united and are putting their money where their mouths are, buying locally and supporting our local economy. Customers have given grocery stores a mandate to source locally and abroad, avoiding U.S. product wherever possible. These tariffs coming during winter only exacerbate the issue, as our growing season in B.C. hadn’t started yet and we had been heavily reliant on the U.S. to supply many of our produce items. However, we have diversified our buying practices to prioritize local first, and then Mexican and Non-USA produce whenever it is available, and affordable.

During the winter, our access to local produce is very minimal. We grow hardy root vegetables, cabbages, squash, and potatoes, but not a lot else. Thankfully, over the years, growers have been investing in winter greenhouses to supply us with B.C. cucumbers and tomatoes year-round, and within the next year or two, we will have consistent access to a decent supply of locally grown cucumbers, tomatoes, and more, throughout the winter season. Unfortunately, we are left to rely on the U.S.A. for many items that we simple can’t grow locally, and other big box stores buy up all the extra offshore supplies and leave little left on the market for everybody else. With demand skyrocketing for Mexican produce, prices are poised to follow suit, while demand and

pricing on U.S. produce will plummet.

We have created a page on our website to provide continual updates on the tariff situation as they unfold. There is also a seasonal chart to show when products become available in BC over the course of our growing season. Any major tariff updates will be reflected on our website, and we will also be sending out newsletters with updates as they happen. Visit www.theoldfarmmarket.ca to visit our tariff page and to sign up for our email list.

At The Old Farm Market, we are committed to providing great quality produce at the lowest prices, while buying as local as seasonally possible.

Thank you for supporting local!

This year on Valentine’s Day, Carlton House of Oak Bay marked its 20th anniversary, not just with cake and candles, but with a celebration of two decades of exceptional independent living for local seniors.

The milestone was meaningful for many, including staff, residents, and the Prewett and Clark families who built Carlton House in 2004. Back then, they saw the need for a vibrant seniors’ community in Oak Bay and envisioned a residence that fit perfectly with the neighborhood’s culture and charm. Today, Carlton House has blossomed into a cherished Oak Bay landmark.

Known for its personable family atmosphere, top-notch programs,

and wonderful staff, Carlton House has been home to many fascinating people, including authors, scientists, Olympians, philanthropists, and even Nobel Peace Prize winners. “What an honour it’s been to know them,” says owner Judi Prewett. “We’ve met so many amazing people who have witnessed history and changed the world.”

People also remember Carlton House for the late John Hillman, an incredible 105-year-old WWII Veteran who walked laps in the courtyard, raising almost $500,000 for Save the Children. His story exemplifies the active and engaged lifestyle fostered at Carlton House.

The residence has also been home to a whole lot of

fun! Countless theme parties, performances, classes, and outings have filled the calendar, setting the stage for many new friendships and a whole lot of laughs.

The 20th anniversary celebration was no exception, filled with laughter, reminiscing, and a delicious Valentine’s dinner. It was also an opportunity to recognize the dedicated staff, including two who have been there since the beginning, and an Executive Director whose 10-year tenure speaks volumes about the stability and caring environment.

As Carlton House embarks on its next chapter, it remains a beacon of independent living, where residents thrive. Here’s to the next 20 years!

The number one skill for humans over the next few years, while we learn what AI is, will all be about critical thinking,” says Mr. Chad Holtum, Head of Glenlyon Norfolk School (GNS) in Victoria. He recently returned from a Round Square leadership symposium in London, England, where the crucial role of AI in modern education dominated discussion.

“I can’t think of a more important thing that we’re doing at GNS than working with students to make sure they are critical thinkers,” he adds. “When I think about GNS and the impact our teachers and staff have on our kids—especially through the International Baccalaureate programme—critical thinking is at the heart of our approach.”

The symposium, brought together 260 education leaders from 50 countries, and focused heavily on AI’s impact on teaching and learning. The need to embrace AI, rather than avoid it, to enhance educational practices, was a key takeaway.

Expert speakers, including Priya Lakhani, OBE, emphasized the importance of critical thinking in the age of AI, framing it as “history predicting the future.” This resonates deeply with the GNS approach, which already prioritizes critical thinking

through its IB programs.

When it comes to AI in the classroom, GNS has adopted a thoughtful ‘stoplight’ system that helps students navigate when and how AI can be used. This cutting edge tool ensures GNS continues to lead when it comes to the science, technology and evolution of education, embracing a philosophy that recognizes students need to understand AI as a tool that will be there well beyond high school graduation—one with advantages and limitations.

Critical thinking is a skill nurtured in GNS students every day—in debate, design, language and literature, art, math and science. An inquirybased approach, a deep commitment to democracy, environment and leadership, a dash of adventure, and a whole lot of service may just be the GNS secret sauce—key to turning out students able to navigate modern challenges like AI.

Common Questions About Hearing Aids, Answered

by a Licensed Audiologist

work or wondering if they can help with that constant ringing in your ears?

These are common questions, and the answers can make a big difference when it comes to understanding your hearing health. Katie Koebel, a licensed audiologist at HearingLife, breaks down these topics and explains why seeking professional advice is key when considering hearing aids.

How Do Hearing Aids Work?

Think of hearing aids as tiny personal assistants for your ears. They’re advanced little devices designed to make the sounds around you clearer and easier to understand.

Katie describes them as “sound boosters,” but there’s more to it than just turning up the volume. These devices are custom-programmed to match your specific hearing needs. That means they focus on amplifying the sounds you might struggle with, like conversations in a busy café or the dialogue on your favorite TV show, while keeping background noise in check.

With the right hearing aids, everyday moments—like chatting with friends, enjoying a walk in the park, or catching subtle sounds in your favorite music—become more accessible.

Can Hearing Aids Help with Tinnitus?

Yes, they can! Tinnitus, that constant ringing or buzzing in the ears, can be frustrating. But many modern hearing aids come with features designed to make tinnitus less noticeable

Katie explains that addressing hearing loss alone often reduces tinnitus symptoms for many people. When the brain gets more of the sounds it’s been missing, it tends to focus less on the ringing. And for those with persistent tinnitus, specialized programs within hearing aids can provide soothing sounds to help you concentrate on what matters most—like enjoying your day without distraction.

Is there financial assistance available in Canada?

Yes, government programs in Canada may help cover part of the cost of hearing aids, though the type and amount vary by province. Our team at HearingLife is here to guide you through these options and explain what’s available. We also offer flexible payment plans, so you can find the solution that’s right for you without added financial stress.

Why Should You Consult a Professional?

Here’s the thing: hearing aids aren’t one-size-fits-all. Your hearing is as unique as your fingerprint, and what works for one person might not work for you.

Katie emphasizes the importance of working with a hearing care professional. “They’ll assess your hearing, talk with you about your lifestyle, and fine-tune the devices to ensure they meet your specific needs,” she explains. This personalized approach means you get the most out of your hearing aids— whether it’s understanding speech more clearly, reducing tinnitus, or simply feeling more connected to the world around you. If you’ve been wondering about hearing aids or have questions about your hearing, don’t hesitate to reach out to a licensed hearing healthcare professional. It’s a small step that can make a big difference!

As a locally owned small business we would like to thank our customers for their commitment to shopping local and supporting small business. We have built our reputation on offering locally sourced flowers and we remain even more committed to doing just that. In fact, most of our flowers and plants are grown right here in B.C.

How lucky are we to live in a climate where local greenhouse growers can operate all year round – both here on the Island and on the mainland. In the summer our smaller flower farms supply us with our beautiful dahlias, zinnias and more.

Our partnership with local growers and nurseries not only supports our local economy but ensures that our flowers are fresh, long lasting and beautiful.

Among our local suppliers is Eurosa Farms. They grow the most gorgeous roses and we proudly offer them in our shop. They have over

80,000 rose plants in their greenhouses. They offer spray roses, garden roses, scented roses and alstromeria. As a family run business they provide us with exceptional product and service even delivering to us daily during high volume floral periods like Valentines Day ensuring we have the freshest product available for our customers.

As much as we love to shop local some product just isn’t available locally and may be affected by tariffs. We are watching this situation closely and working with our suppliers to monitor product availability and pricing and source alternatives as necessary.

As we navigate these times we are also celebrating in the fact that Spring is here! With its longer days and warmer weather and spring blooms to symbolize renewal and joy. Stop in and pick up a bouquet of seasonal flowers to brighten up your day and say hi to our shop dogs Roscoe and Charlie.
