Nestled on our shelves you will find items you may remember from your past as well as brand new items that complement those memories. We believe that including vintage in your home and your wardrobe does several wonderful things: it creates a unique look that is personal to you, it keeps those items out of our landfills and it provides you with products that are well made and have withstood the test of time. A win all around. We are well known for carrying Mexican oilcloth – colourful vinyl fabric which is perfect for table coverings and which we sew into bags and other products. Need to update that patio table? Come and see our full line of this incredible fabric. We also strive to incorporate as many locally produced items as we can - specifically carrying those makers who do not have an online presence, in an attempt to give them exposure and a chance to sell their wares. This includes cards, clothing, jewelry, accessories and artworks. Perhaps the thing that we are most excited about is our

How AI helps with hearing loss currently and how it can help in the future
H
earing loss research has advanced significantly using artificial intelligence (AI), which is a system that uses data to recognize patterns. With large amounts of data, AI can navigate complex problems involving many variables. HERE’S HOW AI HAS BEEN USED FOR HEARING LOSS AND ITS POTENTIAL TO HELP IN THE FUTURE. CURRENT USES OF AI A common use of AI is to provide automated closed captioning for videos for those with hearing loss. Some audiologists also use AI to help fit hearing aids, where they play different sounds and use software with AI functions to provide suggestions to tune the hearing aid. AI is also used in hearing aids with pre-trained models preset for environments. Newer hearing aids with AI can listen to the environment and automatically make adjustments, actively lowering background noise while increasing the volume of voices to make hearing speech easier.
FUTURE USES OF AI AI can potentially replicate how the brain hears sounds without hearing loss, automatically adjusting to match each individual’s hearing needs. AI can create a balanced, personalized output by scanning the environment, identifying the elements of different sounds and understanding how to process each element. More advanced use of AI may help focus on conversations between multiple people in noisy environments and could determine which voice to focus on by tracking neural activities of the brain. Another future possibility would be using augmented reality (AR) glasses, which are glasses that provide information to the wearer. Eye-tracking technology would allow the AI to know in which direction to focus while the glasses could provide automated captions to supplement the speech. While the future is full of possibilities, advanced hearing aids already can suppress unwanted noise, allowing you to focus on voices.

GARDENWORKS 2022 has been proclaimed “The Year of the Garden”, certainly a perfect fit for Oak Bay’s community of passionate gardeners, always keen to take advantage of a long growing season and unparalleled climate to create beautiful, bountiful gardens.
F
or Gardenworks, 2022 is the first spring at their new location at 2040 Oak Bay Avenue, after residing for close to 30 years “just up the road”. The Gardenworks team has embraced their new space, filling up every nook and cranny with plants and pottery, while leaving enough room to squeeze in a great selection of gardening essentials and lovingly curated home décor treasures.
Tropical plants, ardently doted on by staff, dominate the Oak Bay avenue entry to the store. The store is chockablock full. Who knew there are so many different kinds of Alocasia, Peperomia, Philodendron and Pothos. Or orchids. Wow! The rather well-known secret, impossible to see from Oak Bay Avenue, is an expansive 5000 square feet of outdoor space tucked in behind the building.
That nursery is an amazing sight to see. It is constantly overflowing with fresh, locally grown annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs. And there are more pots out there too! It seems there is everything needed to create amazing hanging baskets, productive garden plots or spectacular gardens, beautiful outdoor living spaces, a happy place for pollinators or welcoming planters for the entry to a home. Gardeners are often on the hunt for a favourite plant like amazing alliums, fragrant lavenders, lush hostas and ferns for the shade. The friendly, smart and plant centric (sometimes eccentric too!) team at Gardenworks love them all and are adept at suggesting perfect plant choices and offering practical gardening advice. They are keen to greet members of the Oak Bay community each day, and are striving to truly make 2022 “The Year of the Garden”. gardenworks.ca

ou belong at GNS, one of western Canada’s leading IB World Continuum Schools. Glenlyon Norfolk School is proud to offer our Community Scholarships, which provide entrance scholarships of up to $10,000 to new domestic Grade 8 to 12 students. This program is designed to make the GNS learning experience accessible to students throughout our community. “It’s about students and their ability to be well-rounded,” comments Mr. Chad Holtum, Head of School. “Academics is only one aspect of what we are looking for in a student because GNS is about so much more than academics. We are looking for students to become part of our community, but also for those who are looking to contribute to the larger community of Victoria and beyond.” GNS is celebrating its 25th anniversary of being an International Baccalaureate (IB) World Continuum School. This enriched academic program is complemented by robust co-curricular opportunities in athletics, arts, personal interests and service. This combination allows each student to work with their teachers and university advisors throughout their high
school years to design their own unique pathway to graduation. Our students become caring, engaged citizens with strong character, and grow to understand both who they are and how they can positively impact the world and their communities. “The IB curricula challenges students to take learning beyond simple rote memorization,” says Mr. Holtum. “Students learn all of the same facts and figures as they would in a traditional school, but they then apply what they’ve learned in a hands-on, inquiry-based environment. We’re still interested in the who’s, what’s, when’s and where’s—but we’re even more interested in the why’s, and in how our students will use their knowledge and use it to make the world a better place.” To find out more about our community scholarships and to learn how to apply, please visit mygns.ca/ community-scholarships.

Discover OAK BAY JOHN HILLMAN WRAPS UP UKRAINIAN FUNDRAISER
103-year-old John Hillman’s fundraiser may be done, but the support from his community continues to roll in. On May 13 the WWII veteran finished his final fundraising lap in the courtyard of Carlton House of Oak Bay, celebrating with a sip of scotch and a cheering crowd. John walked 103 laps over two weeks to raise $103,000 for Ukrainian children. As of May 31, he’d raised $108,709, surpassing his original goal. This was John’s third consecutive year of walking for the Save the Children fund. He’s now brought in over $323,000. Since his final laps, John’s received some well-deserved recognition. On May 18 at the Legislature, he was recognized in the House with a tribute from Oak Bay-Gordon Head MLA Murray Rankin.
In his tribute, Rankin called John a “champion for children all around the world”. He described how after an amazing life where he served in the war, raised his family, settled in Canada, and retired in Oak Bay, he’s now using his time to help the young and vulnerable. The tribute ended with an enthusiastic standing ovation. John was also visited at

Our new Courtenay store is an incredible one-stop-shop experience for everything you could possibly need. In addition to our wellestablished Produce, Grocery, and Deli departments, we have a full-service Meat and Seafood Department, Bakery, Floral & Gift shop, and offer wholesale produce as well! If you’re

During the week of April 20-27th, 5% of all proceeds from our three locations were donated to The Salvation Army Ukraine Humanitarian Aid. We were able to raise $26,315.29 and put out a challenge to other local businesses and individuals. Within the following weeks, we had an anonymous donor match our original contribution, as well as a second anonymous donor donate $25,000. The total of all donations came to $82,880.58. We are thrilled to have been able to step-up for Ukraine and encourage others to do so as well. What an incredible turnout. Yesterday, John was recognized by the Oak Bay Mayor and Council at their volunteer appreciation event. Mayor Murdoch commended John for his dedication and the example he inspires for the whole community. Since wrapping things up, John’s received some very meaningful recognition and many messages of thanks. But he too is feeling tremendous gratitude.
