OAK BAY BICYCLES

85 Years of Awesome! BIRTHDAY BASH — JUNE 7/8/9

Start your cycling experience!

T

his year, Oak Bay Bicycles is celebrating 85 years of serving Victoria cyclists. Beginning in the days of a single type and colour and growing to today’s plethora of styles and choices, we have shared passion and our love of cycling with thousands. We’re proud and grateful for having been part of so many people’s cycling story. Today, more so than at any time in the past, the bicycle is offering something virtually everyone agrees our community can benefit from, a clean, efficient, affordable, and most importantly enjoyable mode of transportation and recreation. Though polarization has injected virtually all issues we face, however, when it comes to bikes, I have yet to meet the individual who thinks the bicycle is a dumb idea whose day has come and gone. The bicycle is part of the solution we seek, and Oak Bay Bikes will be focused on delivering this solution to you. Are we dreamers? You bet. Does the future look good from here? Absolutely! Please come visit us, we’d love to be part of your cycling story. — Karl Ullrich, Owner, Oak Bay Bikes

Benefits of Golf — Did you Know? To find a sport that allows you to play from kindergarten into your senior years is not an easy task. If you want to stay active for life, then golf may be the sport for you. Here are some little-known benefits to the game of golf: 1. Golf is an effective, low-impact method to develop your cardio activity, core stability, balance and focus — all necessary to function effectively dayto-day, and to reduce your risk of health concerns. 2. Thanks to a new generation of golf professionals, strength, conditioning and nutrition are a significant part of golf instructional programs. 3. Golf helps to develop and improve balance, hand-eye coordination and basic movement skills — everything a child needs to build their physical literacy (the mastery of fundamental movement skills – run, jump, throw, hit, swing etc.). 4. Golf is one of the better low-risk activities for seniors. Walking — a low-impact exercise, is especially beneficial for older adults, and the

twisting and swinging of the body can help to keep the body flexible and limber. 5. Golf is a good mental exercise and can contribute to the improvementof mental sharpness and concentration. 6. Golf is great for family bonding and entertainment. Family sports are a great way to spend time together, to teach children about fair play and teamwork. There are also multiple health benefits. Because of the handicap system that was created to determine a golfer’s playing ability and potential, moms and dads can actually compete with their children, even if they play from different tee boxes or at significantly different skill levels. 7. The game of golf has, at its core, a standard of behaviour that lends itself to positive development. Personal skills such as honesty, integrity, courtesy and respect are all present in golf, regardless of the level of competition. Golf teaches kids to use good judgment and to be responsible.
