OUTDOOR SPRING ESSENTIALS!

A

change of scenery is always refreshing, even if that change is in your own backyard. Whether you’re creating a calm oasis, a playful entertaining area or your own private vacation spot, Five Fields would love to help you transform your outdoor space.

There are plenty of exciting trends this season, outdoor living this year is working hard to create stylish spaces with definite design moments . It is also extending our indoor space and perhaps rather than a large table for entertaining maybe it’s creating a meditation or yoga area, a reading nook or veggie patches with cutting gardens. Patio furniture has evolved that looks and feels like it belongs indoors, natural tones and textures in pillows complement your garden, it’s also about remaking what you already have and adding a dash of new.

Top Reasons to Attend Middle School at GNS

T

he opportunities for personal and academic growth are endless at the Glenlyon Norfolk Middle School. Located on the same campus as our Senior School, students in Grades 6 to 8 enjoy the benefits of sharing sophisticated facilities with their high school counterparts while still being part of their own close-knit, nurturing community. Middle School is the perfect age for students to try new things and our students are encouraged to take on new challenges, secure in the knowledge that they will be supported by their teachers and peers. Beginning in Grade 6, our students are given the chance to learn Spanish, French and Mandarin as well as to take part in our unique fine arts rotation that exposes them in an experiential way to band, art, drama and choir. The opportunity to try new things also extends well beyond the classroom with our expansive co-curricular options from athletics to debate to service to robotics and more.

As an International Baccalaureate continuum school, GNS is proud to offer the IB Middle Years Programme, a rich academic program that is designed to shape our students into reflective, critical thinkers as well as confident, capable global citizens who are well-prepared to move on with confidence to the Senior School. They engage with depth and passion in a program that builds and consolidates foundation skills at a high level, and further develops advanced level thinking such as how to evaluate, how to apply analytical skills, and how to solve real-life problems with creativity. At GNS, every student is recognized and supported as a unique individual. Each is challenged to embrace the school’s core values of truth, courage, caring, individuality and community, which are designed to allow students to be the best they can be in every area of the school, and in life. Safety Doesn’t Compromise Happiness at Carlton House of Oak Bay

I

n early 2020, there was much uncertainty around how COVID would affect our lives. The Carlton House owners, board members, and management team have stayed vigilant on keeping up to date with the latest information and adapting our policies as news evolves. COVID changed our protocols beyond simply wearing masks and sanitizing, but it pushed us to step up where family members no longer could, and allowed us to be even more supportive of our amazing community of residents.

We purchased a new community passenger van in order to offer our residents their own free, private and safe form of transportation when travelling to or from medical and

necessary appointments, allowing our residents to carry on with their essential matters in as secure way. Carlton House also now offers an in-house convenience store with all the basic essentials, as well as any special requests, in order to achieve an assafe-as-possible shopping experience for our residents. If there is something that our tuck shop just can’t offer, we also take requests for any personal shopping needs at no charge. Our team will pick up just about anything a resident could need, sanitize it, and deliver it safely to their door.

Carlton House is also proud to announce we have launched our new Wellness Program! These activities and events are expertly designed by Jamille Morrison, who boasts a degree in Psychology and Applied Ethics and as well has certifications in Yoga Teaching, to fulfill physical health, mental health, and social engagement needs. Since Jamille has joined our team, we have had countless unique, safe and virtual activities for our residents! If you would like to see a sample of a monthly activity calendar, please get in touch with us directly.

Am I Living with Hearing Loss?

T

he first noticeable sign of hearing loss is often difficulty in communication which requires two people to interact. When this communication becomes one-sided, one person must repeat themselves and the other must keep asking. Long term this may lead to conflicts. Hearing loss requires more mental effort to try to hear ‘normally’ and this can cause frustration on both sides. It is not necessary to shout when trying to communicate because volume is not the biggest concern, rather it is the speed and articulation of the words that affects understanding. Shouting can be just as uncomfortable to a person with hearing loss as it is to someone with normal hearing. Eye contact, a slightly slower speech pace and clear word annunciation is crucial. If you are living with a form of hearing loss, it takes more cognitive mental energy just to concentrate on listening, especially in a group. This may add fatigue or just ‘tuning out’. Our experience will tell us that many people around us mumble when they speak and the faster they talk, the harder it is to hear

everything. The hearing centre in the brain tries to decipher the signal it is given but does not always guess correctly. Another sign is the background sound being much louder than normal speech. This is the result of more hearing damage in certain areas of the inner ear and less hearing damage in others. There are many different reasons for this kind of hearing loss. Some include excess prolonged noise from work or hobbies, genetic predisposition, frequent ear infections or long-term medications. Whatever the reason, a hearing test and consultation performed by your local hearing professional is the most reliable way to assess what, if any, action need to be taken.

BUYING A BIKE IN 2021 Do it confidently at Oak Bay Bikes

VIRTUAL AND ONLINE SHOPPING

T

he explosion of bicycle use within the community is hard not to notice. People are cruising along the Galloping Goose, enjoying the views along the waterfront, or taking advantage of the island’s expansive trail networks. So you decide you want to go out and buy a bike. As always the buying process starts with researching what’s best for you. Your research may include advice from friends and family, the internet, and visiting a local bike shop. Most likely it is a blend of all three and you begin to find the right bike for you. These decisions

MASKS NOT REQUIRED!

however can get clouded and become ever more complicated by the ever changing styles and jargon that fill the bike industry. That’s where bikeshop professionals can simplify the process and put the information into what makes sense for you. So what’s different you may be asking? It starts with navigating the hiccups in the supply chain and backorders. This leads to the ever changing ETA’s which makes picking the bike that is right for you all the more difficult because you may not even be able to see it in person. However,

all of this should not deter you from purchasing a bike. At Oak Bay Bikes we have always known the bike is only a piece of the puzzle. It may not seem that way when you separate yourself from a substantial sum, but the enjoyment your bike can provide is contingent on many things beyond the bike itself. So allow us to take the burden off of you with our many services including free local delivery, online shopping and much more, as those are the things that make owning one of our bikes that much easier. oakbaybikes.com
