prior to the pandemic, The Old Farm Market Cadboro Bay looks to expand on what the Duncan Location does best. With a full service Deli, cheese Island and the “Sandwich Construction Co.” sandwich shop, the OFM is no longer JUST “The Home of Local Produce.” “We love being a part of this wonderful community,” Store Manager Chris Steel says about Oak Bay, “we have developed a lovely relationship with our customers.” Customer service is an integral part of how the OFM
does business daily, quickly bringing in requested products, asking for feedback, focusing on the experience of the customer and putting strong pandemic plans in place. “We want every customer that steps into our store not only to feel at home but to feel safe and comfortable knowing we are doing everything we can to keep them protected.” Coming up on their first anniversary on December 6th in Oak Bay, The Old Farm Market hopes to welcome more
customers into the store throughout this winter, the perfect location for Willows beach visitors to stop by for some fresh produce, hot soup, custom sandwiches and much much more. “We are still hearing from customers daily that it is their first visit to the store and are hearing about us from positive word of mouth” Says Chris Steel. The Old Farm Market welcomes you to their location at 2585 Cadboro Bay Road and is open Daily from 8am-7pm.

Oak Bay Beach Hotel
he Oak Bay Beach Hotel is thrilled to introduce FARO Lane, a popup dining space inspired by FARO Handcrafted Pizza and Tasting Room’s outdoor patio, brought inside. With FARO opening this past July for dine-in service, hotel guests and locals alike experienced many a warm summer evening paired with delicious Neapolitan-style pizza and crafted cocktails on FARO’s outdoor patio. As the season changed and the temperatures lowered, restaurants have had to rethink the outdoor dining experience that can best accommodate their guests. Paired with a shortage of heaters available to purchase worldwide, the hotel management team was motivated to reinvent their patio space by transforming the Conservatory into FARO Lane, a “pop-up” indoor patio. Working with local companies Platinum Floral Designs and Designer Weddings, FARO Lane’s decor has been curated with dried hops bines from micro hop grower Cobble Hill Hops, Edison lights, an abundance of indoor plants and a feature hedge surrounded by locally sourced pampas grass, faux tropical plants and dried florals.
Since 1934, Oak Bay Bikes’ mission has been to serve you and your bike better. Our commitment to providing you with a world-class customer experience has established us as Victoria’s premier bike shop and is at the heart of the new Oak Bay Bikes Advantage. “We know the colder weather will limit what we can offer on our outdoor patio,” says Christian Sealey, Director of Food & Beverage. “We decided to repurpose a space in the hotel currently not in use to offer a truly unique experience for our guests. FARO Lane is distinctly unique and a wonderful addition to FARO.” FARO is open daily for cafe service from 7:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and for lunch and dinner service from 11:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Individual, physically distanced tables can be booked for groupings of 2 to 6 people, to ensure the provincial health guidelines and protocols of the hotel are met.

n September 9, 2020, Glenlyon Norfolk School Junior School students and their parents had the opportunity to enter their new Main Building for the very first time. The 28,000 square foot building with an oceanfront view was completed well ahead of schedule, allowing the school to welcome back students in the new facilities for the 2020/2021 school year. “The building reflects the quality of teaching at the school,” said Mrs. Jean Bigelow, Junior School Principal. “The classrooms are bigger, kids can spread out more and we can do more in the space with our students.” The building was designed to create a school atmosphere that centres around inquiry-based learning and collaboration. As an International Baccalaureate World Continuum School, GNS focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer both in the classroom and the world outside. The Main Building includes two large classrooms per grade and each pair of rooms shares a bathroom, features that have proved even more valuable this year with the current requirements for physical distancing. Each classroom also has floor to ceiling windows and a view of the ocean. The new Learning
Commons, located on the second floor, has become the hub of the school with plenty of room for students to spread out and explore the many resources. Students also have access to a new Innovation Lab, a space that will enhance the IB Primary Years Programme by allowing students to demonstrate their learning in interesting and creative ways. The gym is 1.5 times bigger than our old one, providing ample room for students to enjoy their Physical Education and activity blocks. The large art room has two walls of windows that look out over the water to provide ample scope for artistic innovation. Getting the building ready for the start of the 2020/2021 school year was

no easy task and Knight Contracting Ltd. (KCL) and their crews worked incredibly hard to make the September 9 opening possible. “Our work with KCL has been a partnership in the truest sense of the word. Wayne Knight doesn’t wait for things to happen, he makes them happen, and this approach was fundamental to us reaching the September 9 completion date,” said Mrs. Chrissy Rainseth, Chief Financial Officer at GNS. “Paul Heron, the project manager, understood every detail that led up to the finished project. The efficiency with which he works and his professionalism made him a pleasure for us to deal with, and frankly, for my role, made this enormous project manageable.” The District of Oak Bay also played an important role in making the September 9 opening for students possible. Their willingness to work with the school and KCL is commendable. “This has taken many years to come together and we are excited to honour and celebrate those who contributed to this incredible facility,” says Mr. Chad Holtum, Head of School. “We have many heroes in our community who have worked tirelessly to make this transformation possible.”

A
t the moment, you will find Michael and Angela at Avenue Barber, however we look forward to being able to add a third barber in the future. Angela grew up in Prince George and Ladysmith and moved to Victoria when she was 18. She decided on her career and did her training locally at Gibson’s Barber Shop and School. She’s been working as a barber for 3 years and loving it. Outside of work Angela loves socializing with friends and family, going for long walks and spending time taking in the culture and beauty of the city. Michael started in the hair business when he was 21 doing his early training in Victoria and furthering it at Sassoon’s in London. He also trained and worked as an educator for Irvine Rusk of Scotland. He successfully ran
How Tinnitus Impacts Daily Life
M
ost people have experienced ringing or buzzing in their ears, likely after a loud event. Ringing in the ears can be distracting and make communicating difficult. The noise typically fades, but for some, never goes away. This ringing is called tinnitus. It can manifest as ringing, clicking, buzzing, or a variety of sounds. Tinnitus ranges in severity and is caused by different things. Although there is no cure for chronic tinnitus, in which the symptoms persist for over three months, there are treatment options that can allow patients to live a normal life despite the condition. When approaching treatment, it’s important to understand what tinnitus is, and the cause. Tinnitus is most often caused by age and long-term exposure to loud sounds, but there are other causes. Ototoxic drugs, impacted ear wax, and problems in the middle ear are less common. For cases such as impacted ear wax, sounds being heard are sounds our bodies naturally produce. In most types of tinnitus, sounds are not influenced by any external
input. In these cases, tinnitus is the brain’s attempt to compensate for a lack of external stimuli caused by damaged hair cells in the cochlea, part of the inner ear involved in hearing. Common negative impacts of tinnitus include anxiety, poor concentration and sleeping habits, stress, irritability, and depression. Because tinnitus is more noticeable when it’s quiet, falling asleep can be difficult. Using a sound machine or white noise app helps drown out tinnitus. There are also masking devices, such as hearing aids, that help cover the sound of tinnitus. While some can live with a slight annoyance, others find it harder to ignore. The first step for someone experiencing tinnitus is to be evaluated by a hearing health professional to discuss your options for treatment.

his own hair salon in Victoria for 10 years. Michael took a hiatus from the hair industry to pursue his interest in film production, acting, writing and directing. In between film work, he started working as a barber. His interest in barbering grew and after several years of working in barber shops around town he is excited to have his own shop. When we opened our shop in September we had to incorporate COVID protocols for the safety of our clients. We trust you will feel safe and confident visiting knowing that we have these precautions in place but please be patient as these extra measures do require more time.
