Air Travel with Hearing Aids
M
ost seasoned travellers have experienced the sinking feeling that comes with being the last person standing next to an empty luggage carousel. The dread is even worse for those who have to face the additional challenge of navigating the luggage recovery process without their hearing aids because they made the rookie mistake of pu ing them in their checked luggage. Here are some tips to help you avoid mistakes like this and set you up to ensure your travels go as smoothly as possible. Book an appointment with your audiologist before you travel. Having your hearing aids serviced will not only ensure you’re hearing your best, but also reduce the chances of breakdowns while you’re away. While you’re there, stock up on consumable items like domes, wax guards and ba eries. Pack well. You’d be surprised how easy it is to forget to pack your charger; especially since you need to use it the night before you travel. More than once I’ve received panicked emails from Europe from people who le their charger at home. I’ve also had to lend a charger from the clinic to people visiting in the area. Leave yourself
a note where you’ll see it reminding you to pack your charger! Wear your hearing aids through security. The nice folks in the security area want you to be able to hear them, plus you don’t want to put your hearing aids on the conveyor belt (the static electricity it creates can damage them). Watch for the Hearing Loop symbol. The last time I went through the Victoria airport I was impressed to see that some of the gates have loop systems. That means if you set your hearing aids to the T-coil se ing, the gate announcements will be sent straight to your hearing aids. Hearing aid wearers just might have an easier time than the rest of us knowing which zone is loading! If your hearing aids aren’t loop compatible, let the gate a endant know you are hard-of-hearing and they will make sure you know when it’s your turn to board. Wear your hearing aids during the fl ight. Download movies on your tablet in advance and enjoy streaming the audio through your hearing aids while you watch. Occasionally you may be required to shut the Bluetooth off on your devices, but you should be good to go on most fl ights. Call to book your appointment at Hear Inc. if you’ve been thinking it might be time for hearing aids (778-426-4876). We’d love to help you hear.
August in the garden
T
he days are ge ing shorter, some plants have peaked, some are just coming into their own, harvesting is ge ing ramped up, and we soak up the dog days of summer. To keep your hanging baskets looking great, it is a good idea to prune them back by 1/3 to encourage new growth and vigor.
To help your tomato plants put energy into the tomatoes it has set, cut off the top-most stem of the tomato plant and pinch off any new flowers and shoots. Remove some of the leaves around the tomato fruit so it gets more sun for ripening. The improved air circulation around the plant helps avoid disease too.
Now is a great time to plant fall crops here on the south coast. Plant peas, spinach, radish, carrots, arugula, kale and le uce this week so you can get a crop in before the fall frost. Corn salad, chard, and beets are also great fall crops to plant now.

Ask The Dentist!
Saanich Fair 2022
by Dr. C Ross Crapo DDS
You have two choices to protect the bone your upper denture sits on. The first is to leave your upper roots sticking partially above the gums so that they act as pilons under your upper denture, capable of resisting force from your lower natural teeth. These roots will need to have root canals to perform this service. The second choice is to have the teeth out and have the sockets gra ed. The bone placed in the sockets will eventually become your own and will be there when you decide to have implants. Bone preservation will happen in either choice, making sure you have be er choices for stronger teeth in the future.

A: If you’ve planned to have an upper denture, several things need to be considered. If your upper front teeth broke because of pure force, this is a very important piece of information. If they decayed until they snapped off, that’s also important. Lastly, if your lower teeth have good gum and bone support despite infrequent hygiene visits, it’s important to know the dynamics between your own lower teeth against a denture. Natural teeth will put ten times the pressure that lower denture teeth would put against an upper denture. This powerful force needs to be countered with excellent resistance under your upper denture.

Q: Dr. Crapo: Since I was a small boy I’ve been deathly afraid of the dentist. Last week I was forced to go because my teeth are in such bad shape and my dental insurance that I’ve had for twenty-five years is about to expire because I’m retiring. It’s a sad commentary that I was so afraid that I let teeth break off – even front teeth – and I’d live with not smiling instead of going to the dentist. I had to take a sedative just to get past my angst. In any case, I made it and discovered what I already knew – that I needed implants or dentures to get back my teeth. I can’t afford implants – not now. That will come later on, but right now I’ve got an eyetooth on my upper right that’s still standing and a tooth that sits beside my upper le front tooth that’s still standing but the rest are off at the gum. I’ve got two good molars at the very back and that’s it. A er I decided I wasn’t going to spring for implants, I se led for a denture. I was told that I was not a bad candidate for an upper denture as the roof of my mouth will produce good suction. I think I’m ready to go, so I just have to know if that’s it. I go, the dentist puts me out, I get the teeth yanked and the denture goes in. My lower teeth have no decay. They need cleaning but they’re good. Will it be painful to get the teeth out a er the anesthetic wears off ? What can I expect?
