Audiology is so much more than hearing aids.
ost people think of an audiologist as someone who tests hearing and fits hearing aids. That’s part of the role, but there is so much more that an audiologist can do for you. Bri ani Trapp, Doctor of Audiology at Hear Inc., is trained to identify and treat hearing loss, tinnitus, processing disorders and vestibular (balance/ dizziness) problems for people of all ages. Our holistic approach starts with a thorough diagnostic assessment. The auditory system can be compromised by something as simple as excess wax in the ear canal or as
complex as a tumor on the nerve leading from the inner ear to the brain. Based on the concerns an individual reports during the initial consultation, an appropriate test ba ery is determined and completed. These tests generally include basic audiometry (determining the so est levels of sound that can be detected), tympanometry (assessent of middle ear function), and speech discrimination (ability to recognize words). From there, more targeted tests are completed to assess each patient’s unique set of issues and recommendation are made
for medical and/or audiological follow up. Audiological follow up may involve wax removal, hearing conservation, tinnitus management, vestibular therapy, Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) therapy, or hearing aids. Tinnitus is ringing, buzzing, whistling, or other sounds in the ears without an external source. If tinnitus is disrupting sleep, affecting a person’s work and social life, or pu ing them at risk of depression or anxiety, tinnitus therapy may be recommended. At Hear Inc. we us a program called Progressive Tinnitus Management, which was originally created for US military
interprets information the ear hears. If someone reports problems understanding speech, especially in complex environments, but their basic audiometric testing is normal, we will recommend a ba ery of tests to determine if an APD exists. If so, there are therapies that can be initiated, o en with very positive results. Call Hear Inc. at 778-351-1145 to schedule your evaluation with Bri ani Trapp, Doctor of Audiology.

Mulch Time!
by Dr. C Ross Crapo DDS
Q: Eight years ago at age 11, my front teeth met a golf club on the backstroke because I was standing too close. My teeth were sha ered, and my lips made hamburger in a millisecond. My dentist met me and my dad a er hours on a weekend and a empted a patch job. He got the bleeding under control, but I was so swollen and in pain that only the best first aid was possible. Over the next few days, he removed fragments and gra ed in bone so I’d have bone enough in the future for implants or a bridge to replace my two front teeth. I’m finished growing it seems, and I’d like to get permanent teeth to replace the fl ipper teeth I’ve been wearing for years. In the past two years my teeth have been straightened so there’s room for two front teeth, but now I’m told I may have to have more bone added before the implants go in. Did the bone not stay put or did it go away? I thought I’d have enough. What are my options? The teeth on either side were not injured at all so they’re untouched. A: You have several good options but let me address the question concerning bone volume. At age 11 the bone housing your teeth was not developed to its full height. When you had your accident the length of bone was not complete. Secondly, part of the boney ridge that housed your front teeth was probably destroyed in the trauma. Finally, the gra ing procedure was likely a process of fi lling the damaged sockets with granular bone, not adding a solid piece of bone. Even if the gra was completely successful, it would have fi lled to the height of the child sized ridge. Here are two options. The first would be a bridge. This would give you a nice result and your dental plan (if you have one) would participate to its fullest extent. The drawback is trimming down undamaged teeth on either side of the space. The second option would be to place the implants and a gra ing material at the same time. This is a more complex procedure
N
ow is a great time to mulch your gardens. Gardens lose water directly by evaporation from bare soil and indirectly as the plants take up water through their roots and release it from their leaves. The flow of water up through the plant carries nutrients and cools the leaves. When there is a lot of bare soil with tiny plants, most soil water is lost through evaporation so mulches conserve a significant amount of water. What to use for mulch? Good for you if you stockpiled fallen leaves last fall. Straw is fine if you can get it, and lawn clippings are readily available. Compost that isn’t fully decomposed is good, and even the discarded leaves from harvesting rhubarb, cabbage and cauliflower will work. Simply find something organic to shade the soil and you’ll be amazed at how much be er all your plants will do.

but works very well if done right. Review with the dentist the cosmetics of this procedure. If you don’t show your upper gums when you smile, any cosmetic compromise would not be noticeable. Your dental plan may only help on the crowns; they may not involve themselves with the surgery or the gra ing. While there are other permanent tooth solutions, they are more invasive and may not be appealing. Have a thorough work-up and think carefully about what you want long term, both of these solutions should give you many decades of service.
