Our location of choice

D5

DENNY WARNER, Executive Director Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce

ast month I talked about how amazing this part of the world is, where we live and do business. Adding to our quite diversified, protected economy, we have relatively low crime rates, beautiful scenery, stable government, etc. and it is clear why this is a location of choice for many. Following on the heels of another successful Tour of Industry, our 11th, we once again heard loudly and clearly from the businesses who operate here, of the significant challenges to operating on an island — challenges that their competition elsewhere do not share. In spite of these unique challenges, the number one reason each of them states as to why they stay here is the exceptional “quality of life”. Putting aside concerns about higher taxes,

L

much higher shipping and transportation costs, and a high cost of living, they stay for the lifestyle. Our diversified economy and this “quality of life” will stand us in good stead as we move into the future. Young companies, aged five years or less, are creating the majority of net new jobs. The new entrepreneurs are highly mobile, many of them are freelancers. They can and do choose to live where they are personally connected and there is a high quality of life. If we provide entrepreneurs what they need such as access to capital, talent, and technical infrastructure and assistance, we will continue to be a home for future business moguls. We must focus on attracting these entrepreneurs to our community (or grow our own) to maintain our economic diversity.

Irresistible Hellebores I BY SUSAN TICE, Russell Nursery t’s hard to resist the siren call of hellebores. Winter blooming and in a wide range of colour and form, they are long lived and never need dividing. All that and they are both drought tolerant and deer resistant. No wonder we love them! Helleborus niger, aka Christmas Rose and H. orientalis, aka Lenten Rose, are the species we are most familiar with. Hellebores seed themselves freely and are notoriously variable. That variability has long fascinated plant breeders, but has made it necessary to grow different coloured plants miles apart from each other so they can have some control over pollination. Growing hellebores has always been a bit like hosting a pot-luck dinner — they never knew what they were going to get. In recent years, thanks to new techniques like tissue culture, there has been an explosion of new hellebores readily available commercially. The popular ‘Winter Jewels Collection’ features doubles and singles, rich colours and intricate patterns. Even the names are irresistible — ‘Berry Swirl’, ‘Onyx Odyssey’, ‘Golden Lotus’, ‘Apricot Blush’ to name just a few. There is still a lot of variation with the colour and form of each plant, similar to

others of the same name but rarely identical. How to Grow Hellebores We think of hellebores as woodland plants and they grow readily in light shade, but in their native Eastern Europe, they grow in alkaline soil, in open sunny meadows. However, the plants are adaptable and will thrive our somewhat acidic soil. Although they are drought tolerant, hellebores are at their best in moist, rich, well-drained soils. At planting time, dig in plenty of leaf mould, garden compost or mushroom manure. Additional feeding is not usually needed, but an occasional application of a balanced slow release fertilizer after they bloom won’t hurt. It’s a good idea to cut off all the old foliage just as the flowers are starting to emerge. For one thing, the flowers will show better when the foliage is cut away, but the main reason is to keep the plants healthy. By spring the old foliage is ratty looking and buggy. Removing it will allow the new foliage to stay clean. Put the old foliage in the garbage, not the compost. Visit Russell Nursey for more info. 1370 Wain Road, N. Saanich. What do I do now? hen a “first call” comes into the funeral home and there has been a death in the family, we are usually faced with one of the following statements: “We have made pre-arrangements and have things in place to move forward”; “We have been through this before and have a pretty good idea of what to expect”; “We have never done this before… What do I do now?” In any of these cases, we are standing by ready to assist and guide the family through the next steps. I’d like to share some information that may help you feel a little more prepared if you should be faced with assisting in a loved one’s final arrangements or if you are thinking about organising your own in advance. The first detail some are not aware of is that Power of Attorney ends at death. The Executor of the Will would then have the authority to move forward with making arrangements. If there is no Will, we look to the

Cremation, Interment and Funeral Services Act/ Control of Disposition, which lists, in order, who is legally allowed to then handle all arrangements for the disposition and funeral. The Executor or authorised Next of Kin, will need to contact a funeral home to assist you. A funeral arrangement can sometimes take a few hours depending on the services chosen and details to be discussed. You should make an appointment before heading to the funeral home so there is enough time set aside to answer all your questions and so your wishes can be discussed. We will be there to guide you and we always take into consideration that grief is present and needs extra patience, comfort and care. A few things to keep in mind that will be requested at the arrangement are: • The legal name, address and some form of identification of the deceased. • The deceased’s S.I.N. • Care Card number • A copy of the Will (if available) • The deceased’s parent’s names, including their mother’s maiden

As a follow-up, I would like to report today that the Peninsula Chamber of Commerce is taking action to help develop this burgeoning Peninsula based industry. The Peninsula is home to many economic development engines including the manufacturing sector, the marine sector and a vibrant retail sector. Hidden in and amongst these powerhouse business sectors is an exciting and burgeoning Agritourism sector. The agriculture sector has always been a staple of Peninsula economic life. Recently we’ve seen an explosion of innovative entrepreneurs combining agriculture, farming and eat local experiences that combine to form the seeds of an exploding Peninsula-based Agri-Tourism Industry. ocal nurseries are already filling up with plant starts — many too tender to put outside just yet. But if you want more variety and also to save a little money, why not start your plants from seed?Dig This has a great selection of flower, herb and vegetable seeds from local suppliers. Now is the time to get started! Top five reasons for growing vegetables, herbs and flowers from seed:

L

You get a greater selection Most nurseries stock the basics, but if you want something a little different or maybe even exotic, you may need to start from seed. I love reading about the latest introductions of flowers, herbs and vegetables. This year, West Coast Seeds has

You get a bigger bang for your buck A package of seeds costs about the same amount as a six-pack of flower or vegetable starts, but a seed package holds the promise of many more plants. Since most seeds, except for onion seeds, are good for three to five years, you will save money over the long run with seeds.

You’ll have back ups If a late frost wipes out your new transplants, you can always start again from seed. No need to rush back to the nursery to search through the probably picked-over starts.

DEEP COVE FOLK CLUB NIGHT

Beyond The Murky Veil

Brian Robertson Trio

Friday, Feb. 14, 8 to 10:30 p.m. Vancouver-based folk musician Brian Robertson has been called a genuine B.C. treasure for his well-crafted and entertaining songs about the West Coast, as well as some that reflect more universal themes of love, travel, social justice and the blues. Born and raised in Powell River, his working life suggests something of renaissance man: fisherman, mill worker, cabbie, engineer, economist and historical consultant. His extensive travels and interests spring the range, depth and authenticity of the songs he has written. brianrobertson.ca

Uncovering Salmon Habitat Use in the Fraser River Estuary he Fraser River Estuary is the largest delta in the Salish Sea. Its outflows influence plankton blooms and nutrient cycling, which form the foundation of the marine food web in the sea. Estuarine, marine and freshwater fish congregate in and around the Fraser Estuary. This area is home to Canada’s most active port, an international airport and the majority of B.C.’s population. The Fraser River is also one of Canada’s most important salmon-producing rivers. Pacific salmon migrate from fresh to marine waters and back and use the estuary as a transition zone on this journey. What efforts can we take to support wild salmon in urban environments and how can we work to identify key areas within the estuary that are vital for salmon success? This talk will focus on a particular population of

T

salmon: Harrison River Chinook, and the challenges they overcome while navigating this altered environment. Lia Chalifour is a PhD candidate at the University of Victoria, co-supervised by Dr. Julia Baum and Dr. Tara Martin. Lia’s research is on the ecology and conservation of fish communities in B.C., particularly Fraser River salmon populations. Her focus is on identifying conservation priorities for Chinook salmon, who use some of the estuarine habitat on their way out to the Salish Sea; those populations have been declining for decades. Prior to graduate studies, Lia enjoyed working in conservation and environmental education for the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, Galiano Conservancy Association and World Fisheries Trust. Her love of coastal hiking and SCUBA diving help to fuel her motivation towards conservation science. 7 p.m. salishseacentre.org

Thinking about hearing aids? BY DONNA M. STEWART, M.A., Aud(C), AUD/RHIP Audiologist/Owner Hear Central Saanich earing loss can be a sneaky thing, often coming on so slowly that you don’t even realize it’s happening. Over the years, the birds fade away, song by song; the television gets turned up, notch by notch, and you start avoiding situations where you know you won’t be able too hear well, gathering by gathering. Eventually, your quality of life becomes affected to the extent that you realize you can’t ignore your hearing loss anymore. The good news is that hearing loss is wellunderstood and there is an abundance of help available. The sooner you take action, the better your long-term results. Start with a hearing test. The audiologist will complete a thorough medical history and take you through a series of tests to evaluate specific functions of your auditory system. If your hearing loss is medically or surgically treatable, you will be referred to your physician or otolaryngologist (ENT specialist). If you are a good candidate for amplification, hearing aids will be recommended. A proper fit is vital. The most expensive hearing aids in the world won’t benefit you if they aren’t properly adjusted for your hearing. Verifying the hearing aids are meeting your prescribed requirements is one of the most important steps in the process. Once you’ve been trained on hearing aid ‘care and feeding’, you’ll be sent out into the world of sound. Take full advantage of the trial period. During your 90 day trial, your job is to wear the hearing aids in your everyday life and report back to your audiologist every couple weeks. Most clinics include service and adjustment for the life

of the hearing aids — about five years. Your audiologist is as invested in your success as you are. Let her know if you have any problems and give her the opportunity to rectify them. Recent studies show that a hearing aid wearer's satisfaction levels continue to increase as hearing aids become more user friendly and technologically advanced. THE BEST SOLUTION TO

Long-Term Dental Stability ental implants have been one of the most significant advances in dentistry over the past 25 years and have set a new standard for tooth replacement. As one of the first dentists to have used dental implants in Victoria, Dr. Crapo has had the opportunity to free hundreds of patients from loose-fitting dentures and drastically improve their confidence and quality of life. Dr. Crapo provides a variety of treatment options to suit your individual needs.

D

What Are Implants? Dental implants are artificial teeth that recreate the look and function of natural teeth. Implants are titanium posts which extend into the jawbone and act like the root of a tooth. A metal or porcelain cylinder called an abutment is screwed onto the post right above the gums and is used to support tooth replacements such as bridges, dentures and crowns.

Waterproof Wood HAS ARRIVED AT UNITED FLOORS nited Floors has three manufacturers and distributors that offer a Waterproof Wood option for areas that are typically synonymous with moisture. Shaw Hardwood, Dansk Hardwood and Estates Hardwood have all introduced the latest in flooring technology. This raises several questions:

U

How can wood be waterproof? According to the manufacturers of these products, these materials are waterproof because of two factors. #1: The veneer wood, or top layer, is on average 1.2 to 1.7mm thick. With wood this thin, there is not an opportunity for standing water to effect the wood topically #2: The core of these products have taken a page out of the vinyl plank handbook, using a stone core for the ultimate waterproof, dimensionally stable and most dent reisitant hardwood on the market today. How is it installed? The trend these days is to use a locking system or “click” installation. Waterproof woods have adopted this system, too. In most applications, this product will float over an existing subfloor or substrate.

Do you need pad underneath? No, these products will have a pad already attached, usually 1 to 1.5 mm. Can the material be refinished? No, the veneer on the surface is just too thin to refinish. However, the upside according to manufacturers, is because of the great strength provided by the core of the product, the wear warranty can be as high as 35 years, 50 years or lifetime.

Implants do not damage other teeth The main advantage of an implant is that, unlike a bridge, single implants do not require the teeth beside the missing tooth to be trimmed down to hold the replacement tooth. An implant can be fitted into a space and act just like a new tooth, so you can chew food and smile for the camera just as naturally as ever.

Great for Preventing Bone Loss When you lose a tooth, there’s no root left to exercise your jaw muscles and keep your jawbone strong, so the bone will begin to weaken. Titanium implants have the added health benefit of strengthening the surrounding teeth and limiting bone loss in areas where a tooth was lost. More Solid Than Dentures The biggest advantage of getting dental implants in Victoria, BC is how natural they feel in your mouth. Because the artificial teeth are rooted just like natural teeth, they don’t move at all, whereas dentures have a tendency to slip, fall or move back and forth. The titanium root and porcelain cap allow you to chew and eat your food as well as if you had natural teeth. Contact Dr. C. Ross Crapo at: 250-383-3368 for more information. drcrapo.com

Does this mean that waterproof wood is bullet-proof? It is extremely durable, but make no mistake, if an object heavy enough is dropped on the wood, it can result in a board having to be replaced. If something sharp enough is dragged across the finish, it can scratch. No flooring is bullet proof. Come see for yourself — the next generation of hardwood at United Floors. As always, if you have questions, do not hesitate to contact us. Phone: 250-475-3811. Located at: 9752 Fourth St. in Sidney 3335 Oak St. in Victoria. unitedfloors.ca
