A COVID-19 Business Response

he following is my personal Covid-19 business response. But first, some necessary reflections. I have run a business, worked through and survived six recessions / calamities / existential threats to our communities. The 1982-ish inflationary insanity and recession, the 1987 Stock Market crash, the ensuing early 90s recession, the early 2000s technology sector bubble and NASDAQ crash, the 9-11 tragedy and ensuing economic chaos, and most certainly, the 2008 stock market crash, mortgage derivative debacle and ensuing recession / depression. In all of these cases, folks predicted the end of the world as we know it. Well,

the worst of those prognostications never happened; we adapted and moved forward in our current circumstances, ultimately into the longest economic expansion in modern times. However, when I say adapted, I very much mean that in every instance. Our communities had to learn and change some of our behaviours. That is the only thing that we can guarantee and should mobilize for at this moment. So what will I do? My behaviour changes will include some of the following: > I will keep prospecting and trying to build my businesses. I will take my relationship building meetings to a technology environment. I will aggressively

use Zoom’s video conferencing platform and keep engaging with people using online tools. > When I do meet with people, I will practise social distancing, elbow pumping, hand sanitizing, washing hands and avoiding personal face touching. > I will put together a mobile “kit” including hand towels, soap and hand sanitizer. I will carry that kit with me at all times and offer to anyone I meet with. “This, too, will end” is a saying I’ve used a ton of times over my lifetime, and have lived thru to prove it. Look for healthy plants, seeds, garden tools and tips at Dig This in Sidney. Dig This is located in a funky ex-industrial building and offers inspired goods for the home and garden. seed “catalogue” company, here are 10 tips for getting started sooner rather than later: 1. Gather containers. You can use purpose-made seed-starting trays, yogurt containers, or any other vessel you can imagine. Drainage is important: cut holes if there aren’t any. There are great tutorials online featuring how to make biodegradable seedling pots from old newspaper. 2. Sanitize your containers. If they have been used for growing seeds before, skipping this step can cause seedlings to shrivel up and collapse — the result of “damping off,” a soil-borne disease often caused by dirty trays or pots. Mix one part bleach to 10 parts water, give everything a good scrub and a thorough rinse. 3. Growing medium. You can buy a pre-mixed seed-starting soil, or make your own with equal parts peat moss, vermiculite and sharp sand. Coconut coir, a by-product of the commercial coconut industry, can also be mixed in equal parts with worm compost and perlite for an ideal growing medium. 4. Sow seeds. Plant them according to the depth and density listed on the package. For smaller seeds, it is often easier to sprinkle them on the soil, then sprinkle more soil on top. Firm with your fingers. 5. Water carefully. Go slowly and avoid washing away the seeds. Apply a fine mist of water from an atomizer bottle to start, then switch to watering from a can as the seedlings become anchored with a root. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. 6. Cover. Use any type of clear plastic lid or bag to create a humid environment. If evidence of fungal disease such as powdery mildew appears, remove the cover for air flow or prop it up the cover with a Popsicle

stick or wooden skewer. 7. Heat mats. These are optional; while they help speed up some vegetable seeds, they are not necessary if you start early enough. You can also start heat-loving seeds on top of the fridge for similar effect. This works for starting begonia tubers, also. 8. Light. Once the seed has germinated and the first green leaves appear, light is important. For many seedlings, a sunny south-facing window will suffice and plants should be rotated daily to avoid getting lopsided. If you opt for artificial light, adjust it to 10 or 14 centimetres above the seedlings for 15 hours per day. 9. Fertilize. Once multiple pairs of leaves start to appear, a water-soluble 1052-10 fertilizer works well. 10. Hardening off. This is a process that helps seedlings adapt before transplanting. Choose a warm, sunny day to leave the plants outdoors for a few hours, extending their exposure by a few hours each day until you are leaving them out for the entire day. Bring them back in at night, especially if there’s a frost warning. After a couple of days and nights outdoors, they’re ready to transplant. Building a cold frame is another great way to harden off, and they can be made simply from leftover lumber and an old window, angled towards the south to catch sun. Years ago, I lost my upper molars. I didn’t have any grafting done and just let things heal. I went without teeth for about a year and then decided I wanted implants. I went to my dentist and he took x-rays. He said I had very large sinuses, and in adults, sinuses continue to grow in size in some degree throughout life. He had old x-rays showing when I had my molar teeth (he didn’t pull my molars) and said I had very large sinuses even then. He said that even a bone graft at the time the teeth were pulled would have only ensured the bone was wide enough for good sized implants, but I still would need bone in the sinus for the proper length of implants. He told me I should have bone grafted first in my sinuses, wait about nine months, then have dental implants put in. He gave me a price and I left to think about it. I went online and read reports where people were getting bone and implants put in the sinus at the same time, so, I went back and said that’s what I want. He said I wasn’t a good candidate for that because the bone covering my sinuses wasn’t thick enough

to hold the dental implants and the graft had no support strength when it was just put in. That’s over 15 years ago and I still don’t have back teeth. My front teeth seem good, even the ones just behind my eye teeth. Have things improved? Dare I try again?* Patience is a virtue, and a really important commodity when it comes to surgery. For those of us that are impatient and don’t like interruption in our schedule, it’s very important to let good counsel prevail.
