A COVID-19 Business Response
T
JOHN JURICIC Labour Market Consultant Commercial Real Estate Agent Serial Entrepreneur
he following is my personal Covid-19 business response. But first, some necessary reflections. I have run a business, worked through and survived six recessions / calamities / existential threats to our communities. The 1982-ish inflationary insanity and recession, the 1987 Stock Market crash, the ensuing early 90s recession, the early 2000s technology sector bubble and NASDAQ crash, the 9-11 tragedy and ensuing economic chaos, and most certainly, the 2008 stock market crash, mortgage derivative debacle and ensuing recession / depression. In all of these cases, folks predicted the end of the world as we know it. Well,
the worst of those prognostications never happened; we adapted and moved forward in our current circumstances, ultimately into the longest economic expansion in modern times. However, when I say adapted, I very much mean that in every instance. Our communities had to learn and change some of our behaviours. That is the only thing that we can guarantee and should mobilize for at this moment. So what will I do? My behaviour changes will include some of the following: > I will keep prospecting and trying to build my businesses. I will take my relationship building meetings to a technology environment. I will aggressively
use Zoom’s video conferencing platform and keep engaging with people using online tools. > When I do meet with people, I will practise social distancing, elbow pumping, hand sanitizing, washing hands and avoiding personal face touching. > I will put together a mobile “kit” including hand towels, soap and hand sanitizer. I will carry that kit with me at all times and offer to anyone I meet with. “This, too, will end” is a saying I’ve used a ton of times over my lifetime, and have lived thru to prove it. So, cya soon, somehow and somewhere :) John Juricic C: 250-812-8827

Laminate Flooring Understanding Laminate Flooring
U
nited Floors in Sidney has a lot of experience with laminate flooring. We’re familiar with all of its characteristics and capabilities. We want to build your understanding of laminate flooring; increase your information about it and decrease any concerns you may have about it. Whether it’s at our store or within our website, we want you to understand, learn, experience -- know -- as much about laminate products as you need to. If laminate flooring is a possibility, you’ve come to the right place and the right people. You’re in good company. Laminate flooring is the choice for many homeowners. There are many good reasons why laminate flooring is a popular choice in today’s homes. If it’s going to be a possibility for your home, you need to first understand what laminate is. Laminate is a manufactured product that simulates the look of hardwood, ceramic tile, natural stone and many other types of flooring. In the past,
laminate floors were easy to spot, but today’s technology allows manufacturers to create realistic visuals and textures for an elegant and quality floor. You’ll be amazed – maybe surprised -- at how beautifully laminate flooring resembles other premium flooring. Laminate is suited to those who want the look and feel of real hardwood or stone but without the cost or maintenance that can be associated with natural products. Laminate flooring costs significantly less than hardwood or natural stone tile. Laminate is popular among buyers who are looking for a beautiful, durable, yet costeffective flooring solutions. Laminate floors function well in any space offering a wide range of styles and colours. Choose from natural colours and dark wood grains, and warm or cool colour tones to compliment any room décor in your home. If the “plank” look interests you, many hardwood plank designs are offered in laminate, including rare, exotic wood species. Laminate stone and tile patterns give you the elegant

look of tile, without the concerns of grout cleaning or cracking tile. This is something you may want to consider. If you have a busy household or a home with children, a durable, low maintenance product like laminate flooring is a great choice for your active lifestyle. Laminate flooring is stain resistant; it doesn’t need varnish or wax. They are also less likely to fade in direct sunlight, unlike aging hardwood floors. Laminate floors have been used in Europe for more than 25 years. Why Europe you ask? Since laminate flooring can be installed over many types of existing floors it has made it a natural for old European buildings. More North American homes are being built with laminate flooring, as well as laminate countertops. By using the countertop technology and adding considerably more resin to the wear layer, some laminate floor manufacturers boast that their laminate floors are now 10 to 20 times harder than laminate countertops. Since the resin-filled wear layer is so dense, it becomes
extremely difficult to stain or scratch. Laminate floors are never secured directly to the sub floor, instead they are floated over the subfloor. This allows laminate flooring to be used over a wide variety of subfloors, including wooden subfloors, existing floors and even concrete slabs. Laminate floors offer many benefits including: exceptional durability, easy to clean surface, superior stain resistance, superior fade resistance, installs in/on all grade levels, even below grade, installs over different types of subfloors, great impact and indentation resistance, exceptional realism at affordable costs, and is easy to replace later on, if desired. Serving Sidney, Saanichton, Brentwood Bay, and the Gulf Islands since 1988, United Floors in Sidney carries area rugs, carpet, hardwood, laminate, ceramic tile, vinyl flooring and cork flooring. The sales staff will work with you to select the best flooring for your home. They are your total flooring solution. United Floors in Sidney, 9752 Fourth St. Phone: 250-655-4858. unitedfloors.ca

Browse Hear Central Saanich’s website for info relating to audiology, hearing tests, hearing aids, hearing aid batteries, assistive listening devices, funding options and more. Because they are privately owned, they work for you, not a hearing aid manufacturer. Donna Stewart (M.A.,Aud(C), RAUD/RHIP) is the owner and audiologist at Hear Central - she brings 25 years of experience in the hearing industry. Donna’s belief is that by spending extra time with a customer during the initial evaluation and consultation, the best recommendations can be made and optimal outcomes achieved. Be an informed consumer You may have come across offers for “free” hearing tests. In B.C., services provided by an audiologist are not covered by the Medical Services Plan (MSP). This means that when you go to a store offering “free” hearing tests, they will have to make up for the expense of providing that test somewhere else. The cost of that “free” test has to be absorbed by someone buying hearing aids. Essentially, “free” hearing tests are one of the reasons the price of hearing aids is higher than it could be. Hear Central Saanich charges for hearing tests. They generally spend about one and a half hours when testing and counselling with new clients. There is a value and a cost to spending that time. Because Donna Stewart is reimbursed for that time, it’s not necessary to tack the extra expense on to the price of your hearing aids. What it comes down to is that you can keep your hearing aid prices down because you aren’t having to pay for everyone else’s “free” hearing tests. Hear Central Saanich, 7159A W. hink about the great garden that you are planning for this coming spring – colour, attracting wildlife, creating a quiet place in your yard or a garden full of cut flowers – now is the time to plan for it if you are ever to achieve it! Look for healthy plants, seeds, garden tools and tips at Dig This in Sidney. Dig This is located in a funky ex-industrial building and offers inspired goods for the home and garden. They source products that are of high quality, and whenever possible, items that are made locally and/ or ethically.
For the time being, they will remain open with normal hours (although they will be closed Mondays). They ask that if you have been outside of Canada in the previous 14 days that you not come into the store. This applies whether you are a Canadian that was on holiday or a visitor from another country. This is the perfect time of year to start cool-loving crops — such as cabbage, onion, leeks, leafy greens, chives and parsley — from seed for transplanting in May. Once you have grazed the seed racks or put in your order with the

seed “catalogue” company, here are 10 tips for getting started sooner rather than later: 1. Gather containers. You can use purpose-made seed-starting trays, yogurt containers, or any other vessel you can imagine. Drainage is important: cut holes if there aren’t any. There are great tutorials online featuring how to make biodegradable seedling pots from old newspaper. 2. Sanitize your containers. If they have been used for growing seeds before, skipping this step can cause seedlings to shrivel up and collapse — the result of “damping off,” a soil-borne disease often caused by dirty trays or pots. Mix one part bleach to 10 parts water, give everything a good scrub and a thorough rinse. 3. Growing medium. You can buy a pre-mixed seed-starting soil, or make your own with equal parts peat moss, vermiculite and sharp sand. Coconut coir, a by-product of the commercial coconut industry, can also be mixed in equal parts with worm compost and perlite for an ideal growing medium. 4. Sow seeds. Plant them according to the depth and density listed on the package. For smaller seeds, it is often easier to sprinkle them on the soil, then sprinkle more soil on top. Firm with your fingers. 5. Water carefully. Go slowly and avoid washing away the seeds. Apply a fine mist of water from an atomizer bottle to start, then switch to watering from a can as the seedlings become anchored with a root. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. 6. Cover. Use any type of clear plastic lid or bag to create a humid environment. If evidence of fungal disease such as powdery mildew appears, remove the cover for air flow or prop it up the cover with a Popsicle
stick or wooden skewer. 7. Heat mats. These are optional; while they help speed up some vegetable seeds, they are not necessary if you start early enough. You can also start heat-loving seeds on top of the fridge for similar effect. This works for starting begonia tubers, also. 8. Light. Once the seed has germinated and the first green leaves appear, light is important. For many seedlings, a sunny south-facing window will suffice and plants should be rotated daily to avoid getting lopsided. If you opt for artificial light, adjust it to 10 or 14 centimetres above the seedlings for 15 hours per day. 9. Fertilize. Once multiple pairs of leaves start to appear, a water-soluble 1052-10 fertilizer works well. 10. Hardening off. This is a process that helps seedlings adapt before transplanting. Choose a warm, sunny day to leave the plants outdoors for a few hours, extending their exposure by a few hours each day until you are leaving them out for the entire day. Bring them back in at night, especially if there’s a frost warning. After a couple of days and nights outdoors, they’re ready to transplant. Building a cold frame is another great way to harden off, and they can be made simply from leftover lumber and an old window, angled towards the south to catch sun. This mini-greenhouse effect is a good transition for seedlings. Follow these steps to maximize success in your 2020 veggie garden in 2020. markcullen.com If you need something, call: 778-4261988, and Dig This will assist you and arrange to get any items to you. Environmentally Friendly & Efficient Sunny’s team uses environmentally friendly, bio-degradable products to get your carpet as clean as new, while ensuring we are not being detrimental to the environment. With the use of truck mounts or portable units, technicians perform a deep cleaning of your carpet by injecting a pressurized and heated cleaning solution which immediately extracts the deeply embedded dirt and soil stains from carpets. After the Flood Has your home suffered from flood or environmental damage? Sunny Carpet and Air Duct Cleaning also does flood and restoration work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The sooner they can get in to your home or office to start repairing, the better the chance of a full restoration. Upholstery Cleaning Upholstered furniture in your home often goes neglected for long periods of time because soils usually accumulate unnoticeably, over time. Dust should be removed through consistently vacuuming, recommended at least weekly. Greasy soils, however, through daily use and from pet oils must be dealt with properly. If allowed to accumulate, they can, over time, degrade the fibres and mute the colour. Regular professional cleaning can often restore them to a near “just purchased” look. When you contact the office for an estimate, they will inquire as to the specific content of the material. If manufactured in
Canada, the label will clearly note the fibre content and is usually found under the centre cushion. If not, a general rule to identify the fibre type is to describe the feel of the fabric as either course, which tends to be synthetic, or soft, and more natural, like cotton, wool or linen. Pricing is dictated by the fibre content, natural fibres being priced slightly more because of the degree of difficulty and moisture sensitivity. Precautions are taken to minimize potential shrinkage. Loose back cushions or accent pillows are extra. Teflon or solvent soil guard protection for moisture sensitive fabrics is highly recommended. Cotton velvet and a few other specialty
fabrics are priced accordingly. Call Sunny Carpet Cleaning for more info or arrange a no obligation estimate for your spring cleaning. They can supply carpet cleaning, area rug cleaning, upholstery cleaning, flood restoration and crawl space cleaning. Grow your own this year Starting fruits and vegetables from seed can be extremely rewarding.
E
very gardener will agree that the most wonderful time of the year is the start of the gardening season. As the days lengthen and the soil starts to warm, we eagerly anticipate the return of life to our gardens. Russell Nursery is gearing up for a busy spring with new shipments arriving almost daily. They are excited to see all the familiar faces again and to welcome the many new customers who seem to find them each year. No one cheerfully pays $6.99 for a plastic wrapped cauliflower flown in from afar. All those flimsy plastic bags in which we pack any number of fruits and vegetables? So bad for the environment. Let’s not get started on stickers ... the bane of shoppers and organic gardeners everywhere. You can avoid these plagues of modern life - the solution is within your grasp. Grow your own produce. It can be less expensive, involve far less plastics, and you won’t ever see a single sticker again. Starting fruits and vegetables from seed can be extremely rewarding. From sighting the first sprout of green to harvesting delicious and healthy ingredients to compose your supper, being involved in food production gives
a rare sense of power and well-being. Seed starters have a hand in creating life and, through cultivating and consuming the food they grow, can also be confident that they know where their food came from, how it was grown, and that it is nourishing. Premium Seeds for Your Garden Russell Nursery carries West Coast Seeds, Salt Spring Seeds, and Pacific North West Seeds. These companies specialize in seeds that thrive in our climate. They also carry the seed starting supplies you need to get you growing, whatever your circumstances. Sunny window sill? Try sill-sized seed starter trays. A north-facing condo that is cool with low light? Perhaps a Growlight Garden light set and heating mat will be just the items you need to start some herbs and vegetables this spring. Choosing the right seeds to grow well in your particular light and soil conditions is important too. Perhaps you’d like to sow your seeds in plantable pots that decompose as the summer progresses. Try pots/pods made of coconut coir that can be directly set in the soil. Not quite ready to take on seeding everything yourself? Try planting raspberry canes,

Years ago, I lost my upper molars. I didn’t have any grafting done and just let things heal. I went without teeth for about a year and then decided I wanted implants. I went to my dentist and he took x-rays. He said I had very large sinuses, and in adults, sinuses continue to grow in size in some degree throughout life. He had old x-rays showing when I had my molar teeth (he didn’t pull my molars) and said I had very large sinuses even then. He said that even a bone graft at the time the teeth were pulled would have only ensured the bone was wide enough for good sized implants, but I still would need bone in the sinus for the proper length of implants. He told me I should have bone grafted first in my sinuses, wait about nine months, then have dental implants put in. He gave me a price and I left to think about it. I went online and read reports where people were getting bone and implants put in the sinus at the same time, so, I went back and said that’s what I want. He said I wasn’t a good candidate for that because the bone covering my sinuses wasn’t thick enough
to hold the dental implants and the graft had no support strength when it was just put in. Follow us on I’m an impatient guy, so I went to an Quality Plants • Knowledgeable Staff Instagram implantologist who said he would do the implants and grafts at the same time. I went back to my 1370 Wain Road, N. Saanich, BC 250-656-0384 dentist with the information but he said it was too risky. So, I went with the other guy and he did the W W W. R U S S E L L N U R S E R Y. C O M job. Right from the start, I knew something was wrong. Long story short, the implants fell out and I had sinus problems for over a year. That’s over 15 years ago and I still don’t have back teeth. My front teeth seem good, even the ones just behind my eye teeth. Have things improved? Dare I try again?* Patience is a virtue, and a really important commodity when it comes to surgery. For those of us that are impatient and don’t like interruption in our schedule, it’s very important to let good counsel prevail. When surgical failures occur, the variables in the failure include the surgeon, the patient and unknown or unrevealed factors (undiagnosed diseases, habits, life style, personality style, etc.). If your sinuses were treated and are normal today, it is likely that bone grafting will work for you. Imaging (3D x-rays) is more readily available and better today. With a good health history, consultation with your specialist and careful planning, you may be able to have dental implants placed. A healthy individual’s age is not a factor. Be patient – it’s worth it. If we can help, we’d like to.
