Mission Impossible x What does your Mission Statement say about you? s the mission of your business to benefit all stakeholders or to create profit for shareholders? The term “stakeholder” was originally coined at Stanford Research Institute in 1963 to describe “those groups without whose support the organization would cease to exist.” There are many publicly-traded companies whose mission is to maximize value for shareholders. While this singular focus makes the internal planning process easier, it does leave a whole raft of stakeholders out of the equation.

DENNY WARNER Executive Director, Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce
I wonder how invested employees can be in working for a company whose primary, publicly-stated goal is to make money for shareholders. In the hierarchy of customers, employees and shareholders, who should be at the top? I would argue employees are unquestionably a company’s greatest asset. Without employees providing value for customers, there would be no customers and no profit for shareholders. Many companies don’t have a mission statement. It is a task that is deemed to be of lesser importance than the myriad of other competing planning and operational priorities. However, your mission statement is an
important representation of who and what you are to the rest of the world — your internal customers (employees) and external customers (including suppliers) are paying attention. Stakeholders are becoming more savvy and interested in working for, patronizing and investing in companies whose missions align with their own values. In writing this, I reviewed our own organizational mission, which is: “... to make a positive difference for members by providing a voice and services that shape the environment for business.” It’s good. But I think we can do better.
Epicure: The quintessential Peninsula manufacturing company ast Thursday, we were honoured to have Amelia Warren, CEO of Epicure (epicure.com), speak to the Sidney Breakfast Club. The Dakota Café was a packed house to hear Amelia tell the extraordinary Epicure story — a story that collectively symbolizes the issues, challenges and successes of many Peninsula manufacturing sector companies. Epicure’s North Saanich head office operations has 200+ employees. The lack of affordable housing is a huge struggle for many. As is the case for many Peninsula manufacturing companies, practical and efficient
L
transportation options are few and far between. Collectively, we’ve been advocating for these issues for the better part of 10 years. Epicure, under Amelia’s leadership, has been a consistent supporter of the myriad (DTAPP, Cda-BC Job Grant, Labour Market Partnerships) of Federal/Provincial labour market programs in a continuing effort and desire to enhance training and career pathways for their staff. Solving these labour market challenges are mission critical to the sustainable growth of the Peninsula Manufacturing Sector. Amelia Warren is an extraordinary
individual — an inspiring and innovative business leader. Our region is very lucky to consider her a colleague. The current federal election is a perfect opportunity for all of us to help business leaders like Amelia represent Peninsula manufacturing sector issues to the regional candidates. The advocacy must never stop. John Juricic, Serial Entrepreneur: harbourdigitalmedia.com Labour Market Consultant: mfgcln.com

Gardener’s To-Do List
September HE TIME to start new plants from seed is coming to an end, but there are still a number of things you can plant for fall, winter and early spring eating: arugula, corn salad, mescluns, mustards, pac choi, radish, and
T
turnips. If you want more kale, chard, spinach or Chinese cabbage, look for healthy starts at local nurseries. Later in the fall, you will be able to plant garlic. Keep watering! Our long dry summer has left many plants parched, so keep plants well

watered until the rains begin. Pay particular attention to camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas. A shortage of water at this time of year can cause flower buds to drop next spring before they open. Unfortunately, warm, dry weather is perfect for powdery mildew. The white splotches that appear on members of the squash and some flowers, such as roses, lupines and phlox, are a form of fungus that appears when days are warm and nights are cool. While unsightly, perennials will survive it, vegetables can be harvested. Keep plants growing vigorously with liquid fertilizer and spray with a solution of one teaspoon baking powder to one litre of water, with a few drops of liquid soap to act as a sticker. Or use a fungicide like Defender on ornamental plants. If leaves are green under the white blotches, the leaves are still feeding the plant, so don’t remove them, and yes, you can compost them when the plant is done. Clean and tidy the greenhouse to get it ready for tender perennials to come inside at the end of the month. Keep up with the deadheading. Not only will you remove a potential source of disease, but this simple act will encourage many plants to produce a new flush of flowers. Lift maincrop potatoes if you haven’t already done so. Leave them out to dry before storing, and store only undamaged ones in a dark frost-free place, in paper sacks tied at the neck. There is no hurry to reduce the temperature of potatoes immediately after harvest. Temperatures between 10-15°C promote the development of a layer of protective corky tissue on the skin, and the healing of any minor wounds. After 2-3 weeks, move them to a cooler spot, storing them in
the dark at temperatures between 5-10º C. Top tomato plants to stop them from trying to set more fruit. It won’t develop in time and topping them forces the plants to concentrate on ripening fruit already there. Keep on top of brassica pest control on over wintering cabbages, broccoli and Brussels sprouts. Whitefly and cabbage aphid can build up over the summer and survive the winter, ready to move on to new spring crops if the cycle is not broken. Pick off infested lower leaves. Spray with insecticidal soap if infestations are bad. Plant fruit trees and shrubs. Fall planting allows roots to become established before winter, as the soil is still warm. Choose fruits and varieties that suit the site you have in mind, and look out for cultivars that show resistance to pests or diseases. Fruit trees and bushes are going to occupy the same piece of soil for many years, so good preparation of the site in advance of planting will lead to best results. Towards the end of the month, harvest autumn fruiting raspberries. After picking the fruit, do not prune the canes immediately. Cut down to ground level in late winter or early spring. For summer fruiting raspberries, finish removing this years fruited canes, tie in new canes and remove any weak or damaged canes. Prune blueberries any time between now and late winter. Aim to remove about one-third of the bush each year. Cut back low down to encourage new shoots from the base of plants. Increase your stocks by taking cuttings from healthy bushes. Choose hard wood about pencil thickness and 20-25 cm long. Leave all the buds in place and bury the cutting up to half its length in open ground. digthis.com

Thinking about hearing aids? BY DONNA M. STEWART, M.A., AUD(C), AUD/RHIP AUDIOLOGIST/OWNER, HEAR CENTRAL SAANICH earing loss can be a sneaky thing, often coming on so slowly that you don’t even realize it’s happening. Over the years, the birds fade away, song by song; the television gets turned up, notch by notch, and you start avoiding situations where you know you won’t be able too hear well, gathering by gathering. Eventually, your quality of life becomes effected to the extent that you realize you can’t ignore your hearing loss anymore. The good news is that hearing loss is well-understood and there is an abundance of help available. The sooner you take action,
H
the better your long-term results. Start with a hearing test. The audiologist will complete a thorough medical history and take you through a series of tests to evaluate specific functions of your auditory system. If your hearing loss is medically or surgically treatable, you will be referred to your physician or otolaryngologist (ENT specialist). If you are a good candidate for amplification, hearing aids will be recommended. Be a smart shopper. Don’t be swayed by marketing that’s intended make you feel you need to act fast or make a decision under pressure, or by deals that seem too good to be true. Request a hearing aid demonstration. Your audiologist or hearing instrument practitioner will ascertain communication priorities and narrow
down her recommendations based on your lifestyle, hearing loss, aesthetic preferences and budget. You can listen to appropriate hearing aids in a simulated noise environment such as a restaurant or pub and decide what sounds best to you. If you’re ready, proceed with a hearing aid trial. A proper fit is vital. The most expensive hearing aids in the world won’t benefit you if they aren’t properly adjusted for your hearing. Verifying the hearing aids are meeting your prescribed requirements is one of the most important steps in the process. Once you’ve been trained on hearing aid ‘care and feeding’, you’ll be sent out into the world of sound. Take full advantage of the trial period. During your 90 day trial, your job is to wear the hearing aids in your

everyday life and report back to your audiologist every couple weeks. At the end of the trial, you can choose to keep the hearing aids, try something else, or return them for a refund. Most clinics include service and adjustment for the life of the hearing aids — about five years. Your audiologist is as invested in your success as you are. Let her know if you have any problems and give her the opportunity to rectify them. Recent studies show that a hearing aid wearer's satisfaction levels continue to increase as hearing aids become more user friendly and technologically advanced. It is possible to take the effort out of hearing so you can get back to enjoying life. The first step is a hearing test. hearcentralsaanich.com
Grieving STRENGTH IN NUMBERS BY LAURA VAN SPRANG MANAGER, SANDS FUNERAL CHAPEL OF VICTORIA
n today’s hectic world of juggling family, career, school, social commitments and everything else we have on our plates, I can promise you, death does not usually come at a convenient time. It happens when it happens, whether or not you are prepared. You will now need to take the time, and often make the time, to deal with everything there is to do. And on top of that, you are also grieving. It is important to note that when a death occurs, to take your time, surround yourself in support and let your community funeral provider assist with the necessary steps that need to be taken. Even for those who have done preplanning, which assists greatly when faced with a loss, you are now bereaved. This emotion requires support and guidance from those you love and trust. It is worth mentioning that the faster you take care of your loved one’s disposition — this will not make the pain of the loss go away any faster.
I
When you and your family are faced with a loss, you are not alone. Your community will be there to support you. Sometimes overlooked are the members of your community who are also in need of support. They want to extend their condolences, share their stories of what your loved one meant to them, and also take the unscheduled time to attend a funeral, celebration or gathering to show their support in person, when words can sometimes not seem enough. Community support and participation is as important in death as it is in all other major life events where we celebrate and come together. This gives permission for friends, collogues and acquaintances to participate in the tributes and share stories of who that person was to them. There is strength in numbers. When you lose someone you love, accepting support may just be the strength that you need. You are not alone. Sands Funeral Chapel of Victoria has proudly been serving and supporting this community since 1912. They are here to guide and support you through your loss. arbormemorial.ca/en/sands-victoria

Tips for good oral hygiene

Banding your trees for winter moth
D
R. CRAPO AND ASSOCIATES see patients from all walks of life,
and not all of them take care of their teeth and gums the same way. Proper dental hygiene habits are essential to promoting oral health. Here are a few facts and tips to help you care for your teeth and gums.
Brushing Hard-bristled brushes or applying too much pressure on your teeth can wear down your enamel. Instead, brush your teeth with a soft-bristled brush with light pressure; this will help your teeth last longer. Don’t brush from side to side: brush up or down — from your gums to the tips of your teeth. Use toothpaste containing fluoride to strengthen your enamel, or tartar-control toothpaste to prevent plaque from turning into tartar. Your teeth will stay cleaner longer. You only need a pea-sized dollop of toothpaste — larger quantities are actually less effective. Flossing Flossing removes plaque and food residue from between your teeth in places that your toothbrush can’t reach. You should floss your teeth before brushing. Use a type of floss that’s comfortable to hold, and floss daily. Use the right technique — ask your hygienist to give you a demo during your next visit. Mouthwash Mouthwash is less important than brushing and flossing. Sometimes, the alcohol present in mouthwash can even make problems worse by irritating and drying your mouth. Two products have, however, been proven effective in reducing plaque: Listerine® mouthwashes can be helpful but contain alcohol, and chlorhexidine-based mouthwashes, which are effective but only available by prescription. drcrapo.com
Winter moth (Operophtera brumata) BY FAYE AT RUSSELL NURSERY inter moth (Operophtera brumata) originated in Europe, and came to B.C. in the 1970s. The larvae, smooth green inchworms about 3/4 inch long, hatch in spring and can cause serious damage to emerging leaves if not controlled. After three years of infestation, the tree can become so weakened that dieback and possible mortality can occur. Their favourite hosts include oak, apple, crabapple, ash, birch, maple and broadleaf trees. Damage from winter moth has been extensive this year, with blueberries and roses also falling prey to their voracious appetites. The following excerpt from Linda Gilkeson’s (PhD, entomologist) website explains the most effective means of control, and the time is right now to get this done. Tree Bands: If winter moth caterpillars ate holes in your tree leaves early last spring (apples and other fruit, oaks, other deciduous trees), then mid-October is good timing to

the tree bands in February. There is a more extensive section on Winter Moth in Linda’s book, Natural Insect, Weed and Disease Control. She mentions removing and replacing the bands when they become full of trapped moths, and making sure that each trunk of a multi-trunked tree is banded. On a lighter note, she advises placing the bands high enough to avoid the aforementioned small children’s hair and dog’s tails! Further options mentioned are: Spray dormant oil between December and February, which smothers the eggs. This must be done before buds begin to swell. Spray BTK (Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki) in the spring, when caterpillars are small and actively feeding. Make sure to get the spray into new buds and rolled leaves. put up sticky tree bands to intercept the females before they lay eggs. The female moths can’t fly, so when they emerge from their cocoons at the base of trees, they have to walk up the trunk to lay eggs out on the branches. Spread insect glues: Tanglefoot, Tangletrap (Tree Guard Tape is a ready to use double-sided sticky tape) available at garden centres, on a foot-wide band around tree trunks. The band can be anything that is easy to wrap around the trunk: plastic food wrap, waterproof package tape, or other waterproof material that can be spread with glue. If the tree has deep crevices in the bark, wrap a layer of cotton batting around the tree first, pushing it into the cracks to block moths from crawling under the sticky band. Don’t put the glue directly on bark; it will damage young bark and will also keep on catching insects, mainly beneficial ones, during the growing season, and also kid’s hair, dog’s tails, shirt sleeves, etc. The moths lay eggs from late October to January, so you can remove
