APPLIANCE STORE
WestCoast Appliance Gallery
2021 Times Colonist Readers’ Choice Awards Winner 3 years in a row! CUSTOMER REVIEWS Rob Fraser: “The owner and his son just delivered our kitchen appliances in a rented truck, doing their best to keep to business as usual during these challenging times. This is just the latest example of above and beyond customer service we have experienced from this company throughout the buying process. 10/10 would recommend. We bought a stove, fridge, dishwasher, and upright freezer from them back in fall (when on sale), and are just getting around to having them installed in our (poorly timed) kitchen renovation. We are very grateful for all their hard work in helping us at least get our house back to normal despite COVID-19. I only knew it was the owner because I met him at a tradeshow a year ago. He in no way presented himself as such. Humbly getting the job done!”
Fred Aram has spent over 21 years specializing in the appliance business. He has worked directly for several major appliance manufacturers and prides himself on his industry knowledge and strives to provide the best value in town.
Thank you, Victoria, for voting for WestCoast Appliance Gallery in the 2021 Times Colonist Readers’ Choice Awards! We are honoured to be the number one appliance store three years in a row, and are incredibly grateful for the local support over the last 37 years. We couldn’t do it without you! When WestCoast Appliance Gallery opened 37 years ago as a used appliance store, we didn’t imagine it would become the largest showroom in Victoria. What makes WestCoast Appliance Gallery unique is the values we hold and how this has made our customers happy. We value trust, reliability, integrity, ownership and diversity.
We build trust by getting to know our customers; learning as much as we can about their space, budget and style is essential to finding the right appliances. We offer a price match guarantee, so customers know they are getting the best deal. We want to continue to be known for being reliable. No one wants an appliance to stop working unexpectedly, and that’s why we have lots of inventory in stock for when you need an appliance now. Our delivery team takes the time to remove your old appliances and install the new ones while recycling the old ones. Integrity is essential to our business. From the start, we take the time to select only quality appliances that we know our customers will have great experiences using and look great too. All of our staff are factory trained and have immense knowledge about all the brands we carry. We work with you in all stages of selecting, delivering and installing your appliances. Taking ownership of the appliances we sell is vital to our customer’s peace of mind. An appliance can be a big purchase for many families who rely on their appliances to do essential everyday
tasks. If something goes wrong, we want our customers to know that we are going to make it right. We are authorized dealers of the brands we carry, which means we offer repair service if something were to go wrong. We want our customers to be happy with their purchase long after they leave the store. We value diversity and understand the best solutions are those that take into account different perspectives, ideas and cultural backgrounds. We are proud to be part of a community that helps our company be successful. We have expanded our showroom to over 12,500 square feet, making us the largest home appliance showroom in Victoria. We are currently building the most extensive working Jennair kitchen display on the West Coast, where we will have live cooking demonstrations with professional chefs. Our vision for the future is to continue to improve our showroom to showcase the latest trends in home and kitchen appliances. We hope to be Victoria’s number one appliance store for many more years to come, by listening to our customers’ needs.
Maggie Kelly: “I have nothing but great things to say about WCA. We went in last week to purchase a new fridge. Fred was awesome and explained everything we needed to know about it. He said it would be delivered in a week and I am now sitting here with our new fridge all set up. The delivery guys (I didn’t catch their names) were prompt, polite and thorough, had the old one out and the new one installed in 15 mins. and we have huge stone steps up to our front door, they made it look so easy. They made sure it was a perfect fit and that I was satisfied with our new fridge. Yes I am. Thank you WCA for great service, we will be back.” Laura Hollingshead: “Our landlord bought a new dryer for our unit and we picked it up. We got it home, removed all the packaging and realized it was a damaged unit, dented. We let our landlord know and he called Westcoast. They exchanged it without issue and we picked up the new one today. There was no warehouse attendant but rather than ask us to come back, the owner of the business went into the warehouse and found us our dryer. All in all, a very pleasant and professional experience, the service is excellent.” westcoastappliance.ca

RV DEALER
Galaxy RV
THANK YOU for voting Galaxy RV as the 1st runner up in the Readers’ Choice Awards for best RV Dealer!
Galaxy RV began operating in Duncan in late 2017, but the division is part of a long standing, family run automotive business which was started in 1990 by Phil Dagger. With 30+ years of experience in the automotive sales and service industry, entering the RV industry was a natural one.
On Vancouver Island, the name Galaxy Motors has always been synonymous with trust, exceptional service and great selection. These values have been paramount in the success of Galaxy RV, now with 3 locations on Vancouver Island including Victoria, Duncan and most recently Parksville.
k n a h T You
From the start, expansion was inevitable and offering the ability to purchase or service your RV from any community on the Island was always top of mind and soon became a reality. Although the RV division is new to the Galaxy Group, the dealership employees have decades of experience which makes customers immediately feel welcomed, comfortable and at ease. The dealership staff take care of every guest’s needs during and after the sale, ensuring complete satisfaction with their purchase. Purchasing an RV is similar to that of a home, and our employees know how important it is to choose the right one for your needs and are there for you every step of the way! Attention to detail, courteous service and variety is what sets apart Galaxy RV from its competitors. The sense of pride
amongst staff is apparent the moment a client steps onto the dealership lot and continues when customers return for annual maintenance in one of our 3 service centers, with Victoria’s being the largest RV service center on Vancouver Island. Although this past year was filled with much uncertainty, our team persevered and saw many families purchase an RV for the first time and experience an outdoor lifestyle like never before. We saw previous customers return after only one season, trading-up into something larger, newer or more luxurious, ultimately more suitable for their needs of exploring our beautiful Island and beyond. We also helped many customers who have chosen RV living as a lifestyle as well as couples retiring and setting out on lengthy adventures.
Many of our Galaxy Motors automotive customers naturally choose Galaxy RV when looking to purchase a trailer, fifth wheel or camper. Being the only combined automotive and RV dealership on the Island offer’s the unique opportunity to purchase your RV and also something to tow it with at the same time and same place. This makes Galaxy RV the most logical choice for one stop shopping with the option for financing both purchases at any of our locations. Whether your next adventure is in your own backyard, a long weekend away or a long-haul getaway, the Galaxy RV family looks forward to being a part of your family’s adventure. Create lasting memories and enjoy the great outdoors with Galaxy RV! Please find us online at galaxyrv.net

PICNIC SPOT
Oak Bic
Saxe Point Park
Saxe Point Park is a popular destination for SCUBA diving, dog walking, and weddings. Forested trails and beach accesses are set among the mature Douglas-Fir and Grandfir with many trails leading to beach coves, gardens and picnic areas. The open grassy area boasts amazing views of the majestic Olympic Mountains and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. For spontaneous picnic-goers, Esquimalt has food choices for every taste within a short distance. There is no shortage of coffee shops and traditional baked goods for those with a sweet tooth. If you crave international fare, you can find East African, Japanese, Italian, Indian, Vietnamese and Thai cuisines, just to name a few. Besides enjoying the park for a picnic, visitors can take advantage of the township’s self-guided walking tour of the area. The tour takes you to naval historical sites, tree-lined pathways, heritage architecture and impressive seaside views. Want to get your hands dirty? The Branch out Community Stewardship Program provides volunteers with opportunities to restore natural areas within parks. Volunteers are trained on BUTCHER
how to remove invasive species to make the natural areas more biodiverse. Saxe Point Park is located on Cape Saxe, named by Lt. Commander James Wood, a member of the crew of HMS Pandora, who surveyed the area in 1849. The name Saxe is part of the title of HRH Queen Victoria’s husband and consort, Prince Albert of SaxeCoburg-Gotha. Saxe Point was designated as park land in 1934. During World War II, many trees on this 7.5 hectare site were cleared and a searchlight was installed as part of the DND’s shoreline defense. Find the park at the end of Fraser Street, with foot paths off of Munro and Bewdley streets. The park is readily accessible by bus, foot or bike as well as providing accessible parking. BICYCLE SHOP
Oak Bay Bicycle Shop Thank you Victoria!
THANK YOU VICTORIA FOR VOTING US BEST BIKE SHOP! It has been a pleasure to see the cycling community grow. We look forward to seeing you out on two wheels. - The Oak Bay Bicycles Team
Serving the Victoria community and their bikes has been our mission since 1934. We take pride in offering services and experiences that make us unique and give the customer the most, every time they come through our doors. Through these services and experiences, we have been able to grow and become one of the first places people turn when they think of cycling in the city and we thank you for the opportunity to be one of the most popular shops in Victoria. The continued growth of the cycling community has been hard not to notice throughout 2021. More and more people are cruising along the Galloping Goose to work, enjoying the views along the waterfront, or taking advantage of the island’s expansive trail networks. This is in a large part brought on by the “Covid Bike Boom” and is something that we are continuing to see in our day to day. Throughout the “Bike Boom” our focus has never shifted and
we continue to bring Victoria and the broader community a wide range of bicycles from performance mountain, road, and gravel bikes to commuter, electric, and cargo bikes. However, if you are not looking for a new bike, we continue to offer a full range of tune-ups and repairs, in our industryleading service center, to make your bike feel brand new. With the increased demand, we have also been able to grow into new spaces. A lot of new riders seek guidance from the “Locals’’ in the bike shop on where to go and others just end up riding the same routes they already know. Wouldn’t it be nice to have those locals come with you to the trails or show you the secret back roads to a quiet cafe? We know there is no better way to experience the riding a region has to offer than through the experience of the locals. Something we will be continuing to explore going into the New Year. oakbaybikes.com

CANNABIS STORE
The Original FARM
At the Original FARM, we are cannabis educators, sharing our passion and acquired knowledge with every customer. Our team believes in contributing to our community by providing an innovative experience to every person who visits us in-store or online. In April 2015, FARMACY opened as the first municipally licensed dispensary in Victoria,
BC, operating with the goal to create a safe and welcoming environment for cannabis consumers. By providing the opportunity to educate our customers about the varieties of products available, their uses, effects, and methods of consumption, we reshaped our community’s view of what a “dispensary” could be. Following the federal legalization of
recreational cannabis, FARMACY temporarily closed its doors in October 2017 to prepare to reopen under Provincial legalization. In May 2018, the Original FARM was granted Provincial and Municipal approval and reopened as the first legal recreational cannabis retailer in Victoria. Locally owned and operated, our Hillside, Downtown, Langford
and Duncan stores serve Vancouver Island, and we will be opening two more stores in Vancouver in 2022. Our mission is to continue our role as a leader in the recreational cannabis retail industry, utilizing innovative technology, honest advice, and a shared love for cannabis to provide an exceptional customer experience. We strive to offer the largest in-store selection in B.C.,
with over 170 varieties of flower, with new product arriving every week. Our in-counter screens allow you to see what the actual product looks like as we take all our photos ourselves. GYM/FITNESS FACILITY
Annex Fitness
To win this award in 2020 was such an honour for our entire team. To win the award again in 2021 truly warms our hearts. Our team is so very grateful to our amazing community for believing in us. 2020 was not kind to our industry and 2021 was a fight to try and find our footing again. Just when we thought we said goodbye to closures in 2020, we faced another two this past year. Our team buckled down and did what we had to do- we pivoted. We moved 18 bikes outside every morning and evening for classes; we reimagined our high intensity classes into low intensity sessions. We adapted our spin studio into a yoga studio. And we created ‘Annex at Home’, our online fitness portal with over 300 videos; all developed locally and curated by our fantastic Annex leaders.
While it wasn’t what we thought it was going to be… 2021 was beautiful in its own way. Once again, our community rallied around us. We worked out in the rain. We worked out in masks. We found a way to stay together. All of this to say, Victoria, we can’t thank you enough for not only supporting us in our interesting first two years, but also for naming us as the best Fitness/Gym facility! The resilience we’ve seen from our entire community has made us hopeful and so looking forward to our future together! Cheers to 2022 from all of us here at Annex. – Morgan, Founder, Annex Fitness annexvictoria.com

I take my time and do my best. I’m also considered by my peers to be either the vacuum “nut” or the vacuum “king”! Why? Because I pre vacuum carpets REALLY slowly if needed. It only makes sense, remove the dry soils first before making it mud!! Other cleaners even started referring to my cleaning as “Wernering”! My last name became a verb!! CRAFT BREWERIES
Hoyne Brewing Co.
When my wife Chantal and I first opened Hoyne Brewery in 2011, it was our intention to craft beer that was honest, delicious and true to the great brewing traditions that have been forged over centuries in Europe. That meant using the finest ingredients we could get our hands on—like malted barley from Germany and hops from the Czech Republic for our Hoyne Pilsner, and slow, floorroasted British malts for our Dark Matter. It was a humble approach to creating the beers that we loved—and, as it turns out, that you love too. A lot can happen in ten years, but from the very beginning, our community has supported us and our team, helping bring our vision of what great beer is to more people in a broader region. As a result, we’ve been able to continue crafting fine beers with quality ingredients while connecting with more and more people. We are blessed and immensely grateful for having a fantastic, fun and dedicated
team surrounding us: we couldn’t do it without them. But it’s really you, our dear community and your passion for great beer that has truly helped us grow as a business and thrive during challenging times. For me, beer has always been about connecting with friends and family, having great conversations, listening to music and having fun. With that in mind, Chantal and I want to say that we are deeply honoured that after a decade of brewing beer in Victoria, Hoyne Brewing has once again been voted as the Readers’ Choice for Best Brewery! Our entire team is lifting a glass in your honour and we look forward to the great things that the next ten years will bring! We have plans…. Cheers! Sean Hoyne, Brewmaster hoynebrewing.ca

Since opening in 2014, we’ve quietly and consistently created a lineup of meticulously crafted ales that tap into the infinite variety of yeast strains, hop varieties, and malt options that make up the “brew lab” that is Category 12. With the support of a talented and loyal team, our commitment to the craft, and the people who respect our small-batch, no-shortcuts ethos is evident with a single taproom visit: a selection of 16 varieties of beer (with choices for non-alcoholic and non-beer beverages), well-executed options from the Food Lab courtesy of Chef Chris Compto, and a love for midcentury and retro-lab design make for a taproom experience that is both unique and genuine. We love that our beer and our story resonates with people

Romeo’s
Thank you Victoria!
THE STORY OF ROMEO’S PIZZA Dimitri Mavrikos and his two brothers, Steve and George, came to Victoria from Vancouver with the dream of opening their own restaurant. Their goal was to open a restaurant that offered excellent food, great service and a fun casual atmosphere. They wanted a place that felt like home. In the summer of 1974, Romeo’s Place was created. Romeo’s primary focus was signature pizza and pasta from recipes and techniques that had been passed down to the family. These staples created the name for the new restaurant and helped create a passionate local following. The menus included popular local dishes such as steaks, chicken and veal, burgers and salads, as well as other original dishes from their homeland — Greece. Delivery and takeout proved to be extremely popular options and the local market responded enthusiastically. The first Romeo’s opened on Hillside and was warmly embraced by the people of Victoria. An instant success — this location was joined very shortly by a second location downtown on Johnson Street — very popular for lunch and dinner and still remembered fondly for fun-filled late night meals and crowds. The Mavrikos brothers opened more locations on Vancouver Island, adhering to the same philosophy that brought them success in the beginning. With the help of their growing young families and new franchisees Nick and Chris Kamaretsos, the company grew to where it is today. There are currently five Romeo’s locations on Vancouver Island
and the family is honoured and blessed to be celebrating over 47 years in the restaurant industry. We continue to pride ourselves on offering great food and service at a reasonable price. Pizza and pasta recipes continue to stand the test of time and have garnered many awards and accolades. It is an exciting time for the Romeo’s family as we transition into the next chapter by opening new and remodelled locations. In April of 2012, we returned to the Downtown core with our location on the corner of Blanshard and Fisgard Street. This is our biggest location. Another exciting change has been in Broadmead Village where, after 20 years, in the spring of 2014, we relocated to the mall beside the breezeway. This brand new restaurant has earned our customers’ loyalty and positive feedback and has exceeded our expectations. Our Hillside location has also gone through extensive renovations and the feedback and response has been overwhelming. Our Langford location underwent of renovations and we are delighted with the new look. All four of our Lower Island restaurants have a similar modern look and contemporary feel. It truly is an exciting time for the Romeo’s family as we continue to evolve, and as always, hope our amazing customers will remain right there with us for the ride! Five locations to serve you: Victoria Downtown, Hillside, Duncan, Broadmead Village, and in Langford on the Westshore. romeos.ca

PIZZA
900° Pizza LOCAL. FRESH. ORGANIC. WOOD-FIRED.
Thank you Victoria!
101B 2401 Millstream Ave 250-590-4493
900° brings the best of Italy to Victoria, serving truly authentic Neapolitan “thin-crust” pizza, as well as thicker-crust New York Style pizza, all made in house using organic dough, organic tomato sauce, and truly local artisan and Italian ingredients. All pizzas are also available on a gluten-free crust made in-house. As the name implies, all pizzas are cooked at a temperature of 900 Degrees Farenheit in a wood-fired oven fueled exclusively by sustainablysourced wood. The giant, gold-domed, hand-made oven weighing more than 7,000 lbs. was built by master oven mason Stefano Ferrara in Naples, Italy. Artisan meats are sliced razor-thin with an old-school hand cranked Berkel slicer for
“melt in your mouth” results, which cannot be replicated any other way. 900° obsession with authenticity is evident and translates into quality you can taste. 900° has gone to great lengths to bring an authentic Italian experience to Victoria, and is proudly Island owned and operated. 900degrees.ca

#
Thank You Victoria For 166 Years of Support. HEART OF THE COMMUNITY SINCE 1855
For 166 years, this iconic pub nestled on the north bank of Millstream, has served Victoria. Founded in 1855, the Six Mile Pub has served the community through sunny and stormy times. Together with her community, the Six Mile Pub has witnessed the Confederation of Canada and weathered two World Wars, the Spanish Influenza Pandemic, Prohibition, the Great Depression as well as the current Covid-19 Pandemic. But mostly, the Six Mile Pub has served as the Heart of the Community, providing the venue of choice for countless family get-togethers, weddings, retirements, anniversaries, birthdays, reunions, workplace events, and neighbourly gatherings. Truly, this matriarch of public houses has provided a calm, safe respite from our hectic lives. Owner David Wong, who considers himself only the temporary caretaker of this historic pub, has lovingly tended to this living, breathing heart of the community since 2002. By deftly balancing “doing well” with “doing good”, his current team of “temporary caretakers” hope to leave a permanent, positive and lasting legacy for the community they serve.
One legacy would undoubtedly be the genuine hospitality and the diverse selection of food prepared from scratch using fresh, whole ingredients that are thoughtfully and responsibly sourced. This focus on the quality and purity of the food ensures that the community, including those with food sensitivities and preferences, will have a safe haven for delicious, nutritious meals. The familiar, yet unique fare is generously complemented by a draught selection of 22 craft beers, a dozen select wines and spirits, all sourced with as much of a local focus as is possible and practical. With already 166 years of the community’s revelry and memories soaked into her walls, the Six Mile Pub has plenty of room yet for YOUR contribution to her continuing story and history. Pay the Oldest Pub in BC a visit and become a part of its rich and ever evolving story. You will be delighted! sixmilepub.com

Dodd’s Furniture and Mattress
From The Desk Of Gordy Dodd Dear Times-Colonist Readers and Friends: Thank you for voting Dodd’s Furniture & Mattress #1. I fell in love with our beautiful island and its’ kind, generous people from the very beginning. I couldn’t have imagined what the future would hold for me, when we first opened our doors in 1977. It has been a remarkable journey…
Out of all of the cities in Canada, I knew THIS is where I wanted to live, work and most importantly raise a family. It is thanks to you, that we’re able to give back to so many deserving local charities, relief efforts and school organizations year-after-year. It is here on Vancouver Island that my children and now my
grandchildren have learned the importance of being part of a community. My fondest memories include driving my children, and now my grandchildren around town, to see which neighbourhoods have the biggest and brightest Holiday Lights. To share a meal with loved ones and experience all of the
excitement and good times that come with the New Year, with family, with friends feels wonderful. I hope you get to share in these magical moments with your own friends, family and loved ones, and that they bring you laughter, smiles and wonderful memories, too.
From our family to yours: May this New Year be filled with peace, health and happiness Happy Holidays everyone! Sincerely, Gordy Dodd Owner & Founder, Dodd’s Furniture & Mattress doddsfurniture.com

Van Isle Windows Ltd. A Canadian Owned Company, Manufacturing and Installing Since 1978 In March of 2020 we were all faced with a worldwide pandemic, and all the uncertainties that went along in dealing with it. We closed down our operations, and took 4 weeks to reinvent work flows, procure PPE and implement numerous protocols in order to keep our staff, customers and communities safe. We have been extremely fortunate, as we brought our employees back to work, and haven’t looked back since. As we moved into 2021, we had the opportunity to get the vaccine, and move towards a bit more normalcy, all during record sales. This year has proven to be one of our most successful years in our history which also came with a host of new challenges, but as the saying goes, “what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger”. Not only did we have to continue to stick handle our way with Covid and the new Delta variant, the supply chain issues crossed our path and we were forced to revise our processes, in order to meet the demands of the industry.
Like many other companies, our suppliers started to short ship, ship late or in a few cases, not at all. We dealt with everything from shortages in our vinyl, to back orders on various parts, and then in June, we were faced with a glass supply shortage. All key components needed to manufacture our windows. It caused us some concern and some stress, but by modifying work flows, we continued to manufacture and install our windows. Needless to say, 2021 has been another very interesting year for Van Isle Windows. Covid-19 and supply chain delays
might have changed how we work, but it has not stopped us from continuing to be the leading manufacturer and installer of vinyl windows and patio doors on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Despite these difficulties we have persevered, and our customers have been patient and understanding, and continued to support us then and now. We are very proud of our accomplishments over the almost 44 years we’ve been in business. doors. Today we offer our customers either a double pane or triple pane sliding window, casement style window and patio doors. We have ENERGY STAR, high performance the most efficient windows on the market, and have a variety of window options for customers who want to be either active participants in reducing their carbon footprint, or, are looking for higher energy efficiency. Our windows can have a modern type look, as well as traditionally styled look, and they can be white or coloured, your choice. And we manufacture larger windows and patio doors, where customers want to bring the outdoors indoors. All these options are available to our customers in both the home renovation and new construction markets. The key to our success is a combination of our committed customers and friendly, knowledgeable and resilient employees. We are a long-time local manufacturer based in Victoria and proud supporters of our local communities too. In the past year and a half, we have been able to donate over $70k to local food banks on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. It’s the least we could do to say thanks, give back and provide some assistance to those less fortunate, as we have been able to continue to keep our doors open during this pandemic and all the supply chain challenges, when many businesses have not and people have found themselves unemployed and struggling to make ends meet. Come visit us if you’re interested in windows, patio
doors, entry doors, skylights or sun-tunnels. You will be provided with quality customer service and care throughout the entire process. All of our showrooms across the island are open by appointment, with continued Covid safety protocols in place. We have showrooms and sales consultants to help you across the island in Victoria, Nanaimo and Courtenay and this allows us to attend to our customers’ needs quickly and effectively. As we are the manufacturer of our own windows and patio doors, right here on Vancouver Island, you never have to deal with a third party. We have a proven track record and our warranty is our guarantee of our quality. We are all islanders just like our customers and have a team of qualified employees who have years of experience in everything from sales to installations. They can help direct you with your home renovations, new home construction (contractors and/ or homeowner builders), your insulated glass units, your skylights and sun-tunnel needs, as well as entry doors. We are your Island Window Factory! Thanks to all of our customers for trusting us with their window projects, and for supporting and investing in our island’s local economy. Visit our showrooms in Victoria, Nanaimo or Courtenay, or online at vanislewindows.com (and on Facebook, InstaGram or YouTube) or give us a call in Victoria at 250-383-7128 or toll free at 1-800-361-2221 and let us help you with all of your windows, patio doors, skylights and suntunnels, insulated glass units or entry door needs.

How to set successful financial goals in the New Year.
The first month of the year is always a refreshing new start. It’s that perfect time to muster up the motivation to make positive adjustments to areas in our lives like our health or career. So with all of this added drive and momentum, why not begin the New Year with focus and clarity about what you’d like to achieve in your financial life as well? Here are three pieces of advice for starting 2022 on the right financial foot. Our first piece of advice: change the way you think about saving. A good first step is to switch from a spend-then-save
method to a save-then-spend system. So instead of using your paycheque to buy all the things you want and saving what may (or may not) have leftover, flip the pattern and set aside your savings before spending the remaining funds. Creating a budget, setting goals and automating your savings will also help you succeed. The second piece of advice we have is: get the ball rolling on your investments. Make an appointment to meet with a financial advisor. If you’re new to investing or just want a second opinion, an advisor can be a great resource for getting you
on the right track to your goals. Before your appointment, sit down for a few minutes to think about your investment goals and review your budget. If you receive any retirement or RRSP benefits from your employer that you’d like to supplement, review this as well, so your financial advisor can get the big picture. If you’re ready to get started right away, great. If not, consider your meeting as an opportunity to explore your options and ask questions. And finally, set SMART New Year’s financial goals. You can increase your chance of success by basing them on the SMART
acronym: S – Be specific. Instead of resolving to just ‘do better’, you might want to pick an area to work on, like your savings. M – Be measurable. A goal to ‘be a better saver in 2021’ is hard to track, which means you can’t evaluate your progress. Like we said before, you might want to set a goal amount and a timeline for reaching your goal. A – Be achievable. While a challenging goal is okay, your resolution should be achievable or else your frustration will make you quit. R – Be relevant. Make sure your goal is appropriate for your situation and needs. For example, if you have debt from a
high-interest credit card, paying this off will be a more relevant goal than savings. T – Be timely. You’re more likely to succeed with a timed goal, like saving three months of living expenses by July 2022. In addition, another great tip is to take advantage of the experts. That’s what we’re here for. At the end of the day, either you’ll leave that appointment feeling more confident or you’ll walk out with a little more financial knowledge. Start 2022 on the right path and connect with our team at coastcapitalsavings.com/ contact/email-us

ICE CREAM
The Beacon Drive In Founded and built in 1958 by Bill Pistell and Bob McMillan, it has become known as a “Victoria institution” for its soft-serve ice cream, friendly service, and local clientele. Located at 126 Douglas Street, the Beacon Drive In is directly across from the 75-hectare Beacon Hill Park, which does not allow food to be sold within the park grounds — making the fast-food restaurant a destination for picnickers and parkgoers. The most popular item on the menu is the ice cream, which comes in a variety of dips and flavours, as it is known locally as Victoria’s soft ice cream headquarters. Part of the Beacon Drive In’s appeal stems from the fact that it has been in business for more than 60 years with very few changes. Aside from adding a few awnings,
126 DOUGLAS ST • TAKE OUT OR DINE IN outdoor heaters, and a new colour scheme, the building is still the same as it was when it was built. Even the menu is largely unchanged, with current co-owner Peter Loubardeas boasting that “our top 10 items have been the same for, I’m going to say, the past 40 years,” Loubardeas, along with his father Gus, bought the restaurant in 2005 from Jim Douglas who ran it for more than 42 years, following in the footsteps of his father, H.W. Douglas. According to Gus, and other longtime employees, much of the credit for the unchanging character of the Beacon Drive In belongs to Jim, who was driven by two mottoes — “the customer always comes first” and “we don’t change.”

ISLAND WINERY
Unsworth Vineyards
Thank you Victoria for voting Unsworth Vineyards, “Best Vancouver Island Winery!” We are thrilled by the support we feel from our fellow islanders. As we continue navigating through the many changes and adaptations to the Unsworth Tasting Room and Unsworth Restaurant in 2021 we feel encouraged by and grateful to our guests. The profile of Vancouver Island wineries ever rises as we hone in on expressing our unique cool coastal climate through the medium of wine. Unsworth Tasting Room and Restaurant remain open throughout the winter so feel free to pop by when you’re heading up island. Be sure to check our website for the most up to date hours of operation. We will be closed January 1-4 for a deep clean and annual maintenance - it turns out old farmhouses do not take care of themselves. Upon reopening, we warmly welcome you to not fear delays on the highway, many of our staff commute daily and the delays are minimal and often non-existent. The Cowichan Valley is a breadbasket for great produce, and is home to countless farms, artisan producers and world class wineries. Chef Maartyn loves working with local cheesemakers, foragers, farmers, ranchers and fishermen, thus bringing the best of BC to your plate. Nowhere is this more apparent than in our Community Supported Restaurant (CSR) program. Your $260 membership includes four three-course meals, tax and gratuity included, and can be redeemed from now until April 3, 2022. Full details can be found on our website. Throughout the winter we will be launching a series of unique events and dinners featuring local food producers and plenty of great wine! Our events shine spotlights on these producers so come join us to listen to their compelling stories and savor
their products over a nice glass of wine. As the weather warms and the rains subside, stay turned for the reopening of our popular pizza oven; the newest addition to Unsworth Restaurant — pizza — has become a local favourite. With standby classics and weekly features, there is always something new to experience. Our staff take your safety very seriously and constantly adapt our experiences to reflect up to date health and work safe regulations. When visiting, you can expect to feel warmly welcomed but physically distanced. Check out our website and social media channels or
subscribe to our newsletter to stay up to date. WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING… Pinot Noir is the most widely planted red grape on Vancouver Island and represents the backbone of Unsworth’s production. We have Pinot Noir planted in our estate vineyard and also work with Pinot Noir from elsewhere in the Cowichan Valley and one vineyard on the Saanich Peninsula. Winemaker Dan Wright crafts this lauded grape into sparkling wines, rosé, and, of course our limited production red Pinot Noir,
depending on the characteristics of each vineyard. Recently, WineAlign, one of Canada’s most renowned and prolific consortium of wine critics awarded both our 2019 Pinot Noir and 2020 Rosé with 90 points, making them some of the top wines produced in Canada. We are thrilled at the recognition and pat on the back for our continual effort to excel in quality with all our wines, especially Pinot Noir. ARE YOU IN THE CLUB? For fans of Unsworth, becoming a wine club member is the best way to stay up to date on all things Unsworth.
In our ever growing wine club, members opt in to receive our annual Spring Release Case, containing the newest releases of our favourite wines. Upon joining the wine club, members also receive a 10% discount on all wine purchases, free shipping on cases to Victoria, early access to limited production wines and events. If you are wondering what our single vineyard Pinot Noir tastes like, joining our wine club is the only way to have access to it and other members only wines. There is no membership fee and full details can be found on our website. unsworthvineyards.com

RETIREMENT COMMUNITY
Berwick Retirement Communities
Revitalizing retirement! It’s about lifelong learning and creating experiences at Berwick. What is the alternative to aging? Would you want to stay a baby or teenager for your whole life? Probably not. By allowing and embracing the natural progression to proceed, we gain invaluable experience. This experience allows us to live more fully and understand ourselves in aging. At Berwick, we have been pivoting our mindset and reimagining aging through adventure. While an Independent Living community might be thought of as a big change, we see it as more of a natural life transition. Sure retirement means your career is at rest, but everything else in life can be as active as ever. With that pesky job out of the way there’s time to take up new sports, build new friendships, dive deeper into spirituality, and discover more about your passions. Berwick covers these passions with lots of fun and interactive experiences, plus when you make a move to a Berwick, you are gaining an entire community. The spirit of Berwick is engaging. “Our community is vibrant in so many ways,” says Kathy McAree, Community Relations Manager at Berwick Royal Oak. “I love to see friendships blossom and know from personal experience that my father gained such great friendships in his retirement community. His experience in Independent Living changed the way he lived out his life in such a positive way.” “When some people think of retirement living they think of a stereotype — people stuck inside watching TV, bored and lonely,” says Lesley Sikorski with Berwick Retirement Communities in Victoria. “These are lively communities where we embrace the unconventional. We empower our residents to live their best lives with us every single day.” There are many dimensions to wellness and experience and
Berwick celebrates them all: Physical Berwick Qualicum Beach took their residents to try CrossFit, Berwick on the Lake had a visit to the batting cages, Berwick House has regular Fit Trips which are outings to local parks for outdoor exercise classes in the fresh air, Berwick on the Park took their residents to the climbing gym and Berwick Royal Oak hosts many exercise classes throughout the day plus trekker group outings, dance classes, and more. Vocational Berwick House residents have created their own in-house newsletter which includes articles about new residents, hobbies, photos of resident activities, hand-drawn cartoons and more, utilizing their skills and talents. At Berwick Royal Oak, resident led presentations in the theatre allow residents to share their craft or expertise
with each other and work on projects together. Giving back to the community – via volunteer roles, fundraising initiatives – is an important part of The Berwick Way. Intellectual App of the month, Berwick University Course style programming on a range of topics – from the environment to Shakespeare and even Harry Potter! Live and virtual lectures from local professionals as well. Emotional Connecting to memories and lifelong passions enriches emotional wellness. Programs such as journaling, music from classical, to jazz and rock and roll and passion projects are among a few. Social Morning or afternoon coffee in the café is a favourite time for residents to connect. Berwick Royal Oak hosted A Night in Paris with cultural activities and a French inspired dinner in the
Dining Room. Live music Happy Hours, card and board games, walking groups, bus trips, lunch out, Men’s Group, and local tours in the community are among the plethora of opportunities to connect with friends and participate with social groups inside and outside the Berwick community. Spiritual Mindfulness classes in the theatre, yoga, nature walks, forest bathing, bible study, and more are guided. Gillian, a Berwick Royal Oak resident says, “It’s not about losing independence, it’s gaining freedom and the pleasure of being more social and active. There’s never a dull day at Berwick.” “We’re constantly looking to redefine ‘active aging’. It’s not the conventional way… it’s the Berwick way, which is not conventional at all!” Sikorski says. “It’s not about

SHOPPING MALL
Mayfair Shopping Centre
On behalf of the staff and retailers at Mayfair Shopping Centre, thank you for voting us Victoria’s No. 1 shopping mall in the Times Colonist Reader’s Choice Awards for the fifth year in a row. It’s an award that means so much to us because it comes from you — our customers. Mayfair has always been the best place in the city to take care of everyone on your shopping list, including yourself. Our broad mix of more than 120 local, national, and international retailers carry all your favourite brands. Over the past two years, we have been especially pleased to bring these exciting new stores to Victoria: L.L.Bean, Nespresso, Saje, Indigo, Bikini Village, LensCrafters, Lush, and Melanie Lyne. In the years ahead, we will continue to bring the best brands to the city while evolving the property so that it can serve the needs of Victorians for many more decades to come. Central Walk, who now owns and manages Mayfair, has exciting plans for the future of Mayfair. In the short term, increasing the frequency
and variety of educational, entertainment, and community engagement events at the property is a top priority, while redevelopment is part of Central Walk’s longer-term vision. Although concepts for the development project will evolve after further input from the community, Central Walk has a vision that Mayfair become a mixed-use destination with a significant offering of housing, employment, retail, food and beverage, recreation, civic and educational opportunities. The project team plans to host a series of neighbourhood open houses in the fall of 2021 and to formally submit an Official Community Plan and rezoning amendment in the early spring of 2022. Here’s to building the future together. On behalf of Mayfair Shopping Centre and Central Walk, we wish you a very Happy New Year and look forward to serving you in the weeks and years ahead. ROOFING CO.
Proline Roofing & Gutters Proline Roofing Ltd. was incorporated back in September of 2000 and is proud of its local history as one of the longest serving, best established, and most reputable roofing contractors serving Victoria and its surrounding communities year-round. The entire Proline family humbly thanks everyone who voted to make us first-time WINNERS, after previously having been named finalists twice. The business’s main original focus involved shingling residential sloped roofs. As time went by, it became abundantly clear that flat roofing – both residential and commercial – was also in high demand considering the plethora of apartment, government, and business buildings located throughout greater Victoria. Tar and gravel roofing gave way to a 2-ply torch-on application system that Proline still offers and uses today on flat and low sloped roof systems. Over the past several years there has been an increasing demand for standing seam metal roofs, which Proline proudly offers as well. In 2007, Proline saw a niche for tackling gutter system work as this often went hand in hand with new roofs, and decided to establish the now highly popular and successful in-house gutter
division. Lastly, Proline’s repair and maintenance division provides an array of small job services including but not limited to fixing roofs, replacing existing or installing new skylights, and providing general maintenance to help owners get the maximum
lifetime out of their roof system and prevent leaks or clogs that otherwise potentially result in expensive interior or perimeter drain repairs. One of the most requested services entails either installing more air vents as there is frequently a lack of sufficient attic air crossflow, or dedicated flapper vents for the likes of kitchen, bathroom, and dryer fans that otherwise blow air/moisture into the attic and eventually cause mold. Mauricio Reyes, Proline’s General Manager, would humbly be the first to say that Proline’s past and ongoing success is thanks to its family of dedicated and hard working employees both in the office and out in the field. The same core values of hard work, focus, and service instilled during his youth have been
passed on to his employees, many of whom have served on the Proline team for anywhere from five to fifteen years. Nowadays, Mauricio’s immediate family demands a lot of his time but he feels truly blessed and honoured to share the same dedication at home that has made his business such a success. He regularly gives back to the community via private donations and supporting several well known and highly respected local organizations each year. Before the pandemic, he also spearheaded two missions trips to his native Southern Mexico with food, clothing, medicine, and supplies for many of the less fortunate locals. His generosity represents one of many leadership traits the Proline team appreciates and
aims to mimic, especially during these unprecedented times. Mauricio has never been afraid to take risks, and although there have been hard times – no business is immune to challenges, after all – he and the strong team he put together continue to persevere. Despite the current market challenges and the associated uncertainties, Proline took a huge step by moving operating locations earlier this year. We now have a large warehouse space and yard which are needed to position ourselves for improved efficiency and growth opportunities. All of us here at Proline are excited for the future and look forward to continuing to serve our existing and new highly valued customers. prolineroofing.com

RV DEALER
Arbutus RV
A 33-Year Adventure That Not Even 2020 Could Slow Down The past year has thrown more curveballs at Vancouver Islanders than anyone could have expected, but once again the team at Arbutus RV has persevered through and helped many Vancouver Island families get out and explore all our Island has to offer. Throughout it all Arbutus RV has managed to not only grow their teams, increase their community involvement, but also expand their product line to include BC Built Tiny Homes. Facing challenges is nothing new for Craig & Rose Little and the Arbutus RV team. Founded in 1988 with a single location in Mill Bay, the company has grown to become Vancouver Island’s leader in the RV industry, as well as offering BC’s biggest inventory selection. Not a small feat for a family-run business, but the people the Little’s have surrounded themselves with have made the difference and given them the ability to successfully grow from that first Mill Bay location to 6 Vancouver Island sales locations, 7 service centres, and the Island’s leading RV industry website, ArbutusRV. ca and tens of thousands of happy RVers. The formula behind that growth isn’t new says Craig Little, “It’s about having the right people and offering the right service – friendly, courteous service with compassion. We listen to the guest’s needs and offer old fashioned services to fill them.” Over the past 33 years they have continued to grow and now have over 170 team members. There is a sense of community fostered amongst the group, with a team that supports one another and not only cares about each other but also every guest who passes through their gates. Since 1988 Arbutus RV has watched countless new RVers
hit the road with the help of an Arbutus brand ambassador and often numerous generations within families have returned to Arbutus RV upon the recommendation of their parents or other family members. Being supported by so many people who feel at home with Arbutus RV brings a great sense of pride to the Littles. What has helped set Arbutus RV apart from others has always been their commitment to guest satisfaction, from a new family purchasing their first RV to a couple setting out on their retirement adventure, the Littles have led by example, installing a sense of pride in every Arbutus employee. From day one, there has always been a friendly face greeting guests, from Craig himself in Mill Bay on day one, right through to today at all 6 sales and 7 service locations.
Welcoming the same friendly faces is another point of pride for the Little family from long term team members who make Arbutus RV their home, to the repeat guests who have chosen Arbutus as a valued partner in support of their RV Lifestyle. Ensuring their guest’s experiences are memorable and that every employee feels a sense of pride and value in their work is really what has driven the expansion of the business over the years. After opening the first location in Mill Bay it soon became apparent to the Little’s that their goal was to expand to the point that no matter where you were on Vancouver Island you would have the support of an Arbutus RV store nearby. With locations in Sidney, Mill Bay, Nanaimo, Parksville, Port Alberni, and Courtenay, what was once just a goal has become reality.
Building a reputation as Vancouver Island’s trusted choice when it comes to RV sales and service has been a 33-year passion for Craig & Rose Little and shows no sign of slowing down. “With the growth we’ve experienced,” Rose says, “our days are busy, but we love to get out RVing on Vancouver Island as

DO YOUR SHOES FIT
Finding the Right Fit
What you should expect in a footwear fitting Most shoe stores do not offer an in depth analysis of your feet. You tell the salesperson your size, and they bring you a pair in a medium width. So how do you know you are getting the proper fit? Step one is choosing a shoe store that puts the fitting process first and foremost. You know you are in the right place when the salesperson asks numerous, specific questions such as: have you been measured recently, are you dealing with any foot issues or pain, and what activities do you want to do in these shoes? Their job is to discern what works best for your feet as they are now and suggest the shoes that fit your foot shape and length. Sometimes people may feel uncomfortable with the process if they have deeply ingrained beliefs about fit. For example, someone with large feet may have always tried to disguise it with too-small shoes. Or someone with wide feet has always chosen two sizes too long to accommodate the width. Look for a shoe brand that offers variety in shoe shapes and widths. In an ideal situation, you will get both fashion and function, but sometimes expectations have to be managed if, for example, your podiatrist advises more structured, supportive footwear. Most shoe stores will have a Brannock Device that measures width and length by standing on it and sliding your foot back against the heel cup. It will give an accurate starting point, keeping in mind that there will be slight differences between models, even within the same brand. Some stores like New Balance Victoria offer a computerized scanner that takes a comprehensive 3-D scan of your feet, capturing much more information in addition to length and width. It also measures arch
PROPERLY?
NEW BALANCE VICTORIA
By K.A. Curtin
A 3-D scan can be used to pinpoint any differences in your feet.
and in-step height, heel width, and provides a touchscreen image that can be rotated to see all angles. The scan will show differences between your left and right feet (rarely are they the same), and spot potential problems such as over-pronation. In addition to being measured, the salesperson may be trained to do a gait analysis. It is here that more issues and information may emerge as you move, such as hyper-ankle mobility and late gait over-pronation. The analysis is done without shoes to get a better visual of your foot movements. Once you start trying on shoes, the salesperson may spot fit issues like heel slippage or wrinkling in the upper. At this point, you may be asked more questions. Are you at ease in the shoes? Do your feet feel supported? Are there any pressure points? The basic recipe for a good fit will be that the shoes feel snug, not tight. There should be approximately half an inch between your toes and the end of the shoes. The laces, tied properly, will help the upper hug your foot so that your arch and heel feel supported, and the toe box should allow for wiggle room. Ultimately, the best fit will be what feels the most comfortable for you.
