For 167 years, this iconic pub nestled on the north bank of Millstream, has served Victoria.
Founded in 1855, the Six Mile Pub has served the community through sunny and stormy times. Together with her community, the Six Mile Pub has witnessed the Confederation of Canada and weathered two World Wars, the Spanish Influenza Pandemic, Prohibition, the Great Depression as well as the recent Covid-19 Pandemic. But mostly, the Six Mile Pub has served as the Heart of the Community, providing a place of respite and a venue of choice for countless family gettogethers, weddings, retirements, anniversaries, birthdays, reunions, workplace events, and neighbourly gatherings. Truly, this matriarch of public houses has provided a calm, safe haven from our hectic lives.
Owner David Wong, who considers himself only the temporary caretaker of this historic pub, has lovingly tended to this living, breathing heart of the community since 2002. By deftly balancing “doing well” with “doing good”, his current team of “temporary caretakers” hope to leave a permanent, positive and lasting legacy for the community they serve.
One legacy would undoubtedly be the genuine hospitality and the diverse selection of food prepared from scratch using fresh, whole ingredients that are thoughtfully and responsibly sourced. This focus on the quality and purity of the food ensures that the community, including those with food sensitivities and preferences, will have a safe haven for delicious, nutritious meals. The familiar, yet unique fare is generously complemented by a draught selection of 22 craft beers, a dozen select wines and spirits, all sourced with as much of a local focus as is possible and practical.
With already 167 years of the community’s revelry and memories soaked into her walls, the Six Mile Pub has plenty of room yet for YOUR contribution to her continuing story and history. Pay the Oldest Pub in BC a visit and become a part of its rich and ever evolving story. You will be delighted!

Vessel Liquor Store
Primarily it’s a container of liquids. It’s also a ship that travels on exploratory adventures, bringing back treasures. And importantly, a vessel is a transmitter of information, a communicator, “a vessel of knowledge”. Vessel Liquor Store was founded to be these things.
Since opening the doors in December 2015, Vessel has become Victoria’s hub for all things wine, beer, spirits, cider, and the conversation and culture surrounding them. The company was built around supporting authentic wine, spirits and ales, as well as the people who make them. Along with supporting the beverage community, Vessel is a proud supporter of the community at large. They
sponsor
In 2022 they greatly expanded the footprint of the store, allowing for hundreds more listings from BC and around the world. We’re fortunate to be tucked into a crossroads between Fairfield, Oak Bay, Fernwood, Rockland and Downtown. As such, Vessel welcomes and services a diverse and eclectic clientele. In addition to stocking the core products that their local neighbours rely on, Vessel’s tight team offers a complete selection of quality products from around the globe, and strive to provide outstanding service and value to every customer from enthusiast to expert. “General Manager Brent
Muller is an encyclopedia of beverage, an excellent taster, and a skilled buyer. He’s the reason the store has unique products rarely seen elsewhere. His knowledge has been paramount in engaging both our team, and our customers.”
That tight team is a main reason for Vessel’s Victoria seat and success in such a short amount of time. “We opened the store to fill a niche in Victoria”, Borland says. “We couldn’t find a place where people passionate about drinks culture could collaborate, learn and purchase interesting things at a fair price. We hire only people that share the passion, unpretentiously, for wine, beer, spirits and cider that we do.” All members of Vessel’s staff have achieved a minimum
of Level Two
staff. The arrangement is aided by The Cru’s Nest, the classroom above the store. Sharon McLean, Vessel’s Education Director and one of Canada’s leading wine educators, oversees a busy schedule of classes in the space. There are classes aimed at everyone from the beginner up to professional masterclasses, and from local beer to cocktails to wine. “The updated calendar is published on our website and our Facebook page” notes Borland. “It’s a rewarding feeling, helping grow beverage culture in this city, and seeing the enthusiastic response.” vesselliquor.com

ScanDesigns
The safety of our customers and staff is paramount in our operations during COVID-19 so we thank everyone for their understanding of our operational difficulties this past year transitioning from more restricted COVID-19 policies to a more open policy and to a massive global supply chain problem in such a magnitude which the world has never experienced before.
Accolades to our staff whom are the front-line workers, for their dedication and professionalism in serving our customers through these trying and difficult times.
Since 1984, ScanDesigns has been serving Vancouver Island and providing quality furniture to its many loyal customers. We are a 100 percent B.C. owned company. Our roots are Scandinavian modern (teak and rosewood furniture), but as time evolved, our focus has become contemporary modern furniture.
For over 14 years, our home has been a spacious 35,000 square foot building situated in Millstream Village in Langford with plenty of parking. We share the space in the building with our sister company, Muse & Merchant, which specializes in an eclectic blend of styles to furnish every room of your home.
In addition to our Langford location, we operate stores in Nanaimo, Coquitlam, Richmond, Langley and Kelowna. We are a one-stop furniture store with all the furniture you would need for your living room, dining room, bedrooms and office.
Our strength is our knowledgeable experienced sales staff, selection of quality furniture, and our superb inhouse delivery service. For a truly inspirational, unique and enjoyable experience, shop
in our friendly, relaxed store atmosphere. The showroom is setup in room settings for an easier shopping experience. Our mix and match allows you to fit your room and decor, and therefore dining tables, chairs and china cabinets are all sold separately, as are our beds, dressers and mattresses.
For your kitchen counter, we carry a large selection of bar and counter stools in wood and metal. In the past 32 years, ScanDesigns has had the
privilege of being a retailer of the world famous Norwegian line of furniture by Ekornes. Today, ScanDesigns hold the distinction of being Canada’s largest Stressless retailer of this unsurpassed quality product. All Stressless models have one common trait and that is quality and comfort. Visit our showroom to test drive your chair today.
Again, our staff and management would like to say thanks to those who voted
for us as their furniture store of choice, and to those that didn’t, our name may sound Scandinavian and expensive, but that is far from the truth. Visit our showroom and you will be amazed at the selection, prices and value. We look forward to serving new and past customers alike in the very near future. In the meantime stay safe, calm and positive. scandesigns.com

Victoria Olive Oil
Victoria Olive Oil carries a variety of different olive oils and balsamic vinegars. Their olive oils are unfiltered and come from the first crush of the green olive. All of our balsamic vinegars are from Modena, Italy. They are aged for 12+ years and are free from added sugars and preservatives.
In addition to adding that pop of natural flavour to your favourite dishes, there are many health benefits to olive oil.
Promoting heart health, reducing cholesterol and promoting healthy digestion are just a few ways that adding olive oil to your regular diet can help maintain physical health.
The reason Victoria Olive Oil stands out as a local
specialty store is the shopping experience as a whole. Their team of employees were carefully selected to ensure the experience you have while shopping is consistent, informative and enjoyable.
Owner, Cherilee Dick has a passion for not only the products she carries but the work culture she has created. One word could describe the entire business: Quality. The store is also so much more than olive oil and balsamic
vinegar. While they are the primary focus, Cherilee has been growing and evolving her business into a communityminded market style store, filling her shelves with local and imported products to delight any foodie who appreciates specialty items.
She has recently partnered with Coombs Woodworks who crafts live edge charcuterie boards from fallen trees on Vancouver Island which naturally brings all of these lovely food
products together. A beautiful selection of those boards with all you need to complete your custom charcuterie can all be found in store.
Whether you are stocking up your own shelves, entertaining or looking for a special gift for a special someone, Cherilee and her team at Victoria Olive Oil have you covered.

Thank you, Victoria, for another wonderful year! We spent 2022 working hard to create opportunities for all cyclists to enjoy the city.
This year we had the pleasure of hosting three Windsor Park Criteriums - a Victoria racing staple near our store in Oak Bay - with our club, Victoria Wheelers. We supported amazing events throughout the summer like Ride Don’t Hide, Cycle of Life Tour, and Go By Bike Week by Capital Bike.
We navigated a surge of new interest in mountain bikes as people discovered the thrilling sport. We fell in love with the new Jordie Lunn Bike Park that is a much-needed outlet for local riding.
After a whirlwind summer, we had the pleasure of hosting a fundraiser at The Vic Theatre for local legend,
Magnus Manson, for his cancer treatment and recovery. That night we saw over 100 people show up to support him. He is now in remission and back on his bike.
This year we were constantly reminded of what an amazing community we have. This city has shown us unimaginable resilience and compassion for which we are so grateful. We hope to continue serving you and your bike better for many years to come.

Luv-A-Rug
Have you ever hired someone who “said” they could clean your area rugs but you ended up disappointed in the results?
Maybe your rug still smelled like your pet had an accident on it?
Maybe the stain you hoped would come out never did?
Or maybe it ended up looking just as dull and lifeless as before?
There’s a reason for that - it’s because who you hired was not a true area rug washing specialist.
Many times area rugs are special and irreplacable treasures. And if your area rug...
• is an inherited family heirloom
• was won at an auction.
• has an entire room decorated around it
• is filled with wonderful priceless family memories
• was bought on a trip to an exotic destination ...then you’ll only want a Real & Honest rug washer to touch it.
Luv-A-Rug Services Inc. is one of the only Real & Honest Area Rug Washers you’ll find in all of Canada.
They specialize in washing rugs one at a time, from the back, front, forwards, backwards,
sideways and all the way through, till the cows come home....and safely!
Unlike most companies who claim to clean area rugs, Luv-ARug welcomes the opportunity to show you how area rugs are lovingly restored and brought back to their original beauty.
You can actually see them hard at work restoring your rugs by watching them LIVE online on their new webcam at... www. Luvarug.com/real

The day Joyce Hodd planned
into Independent
at Berwick House, her husband fell out of bed
had
go to the hospital. He died four days later, and Hodd says she was grateful to have her new community at Berwick during a tumultuous time.
“I could not have been in a better place when this happened. I was surrounded by people who had ‘been there done that.’ I was totally accepted, and befriended by not just the residents but also the staff,” she says. “The staff’s care is so genuine. That really comes through.”
Hodd was younger than her husband and younger than the average resident at Berwick when she moved in at age 72.
While she acknowledges that it’s hard to leave a home you’ve lived in for decades, she thinks most people would benefit from moving earlier.
“People are waiting too long to come in. It’s really hard to leave your homestead, and downsizing is a formidable chore. But Berwick is an absolutely stressfree environment. You don’t realize how much stress you’re under until you aren’t.”
Before making the move, she added up all of her expenses (rent, utilities, groceries, cleaning and landscaping help, etc) and realized that living at Berwick would be a similar cost — with way more perks. She still loves the food even after three years, and even found a boyfriend.
“That’s something I hadn’t counted on. I was never going to do that again, but then along
comes this guy and I can’t stop laughing with him — and he can’t stop laughing with me.”
BUSY TO GET OLD’
‘TOO
“It’s a cruise ship at dry dock,” says acclaimed artist Graham Scholes, who moved into Berwick Royal Oak last year. “Living here gives you the time to go out and volunteer in areas you have an interest in, and you don’t have to worry about the blasted house!”
Scholes and his wife lived in a house on Lands End Road until last year, when they noticed that home maintenance was stealing time that he could have spent in his studio. For years their children had been trying to convince the couple to move — their grandson even worked at Berwick for eight years — and they finally made the move in 2021.
“Our family was right,” Scholes says now.
Scholes uses his Berwick suite living room as an art studio, as well as the shared workshop downstairs. He’s currently working on a “parliament of owls” for Heritage Acres where he regularly volunteers. And there are plenty of other facilities and events to enjoy when he’s not working on art.
“There’s motive to get active. We’re surrounded by beautiful walking areas, and I walk about two kilometres every day. That’s so critical — next year I’ll be 90, but I’m too busy to get old!” he says. “There’s not enough days in the week to take it all in. They do a wonderful job, truly.”
Berwick regularly brings in professional musicians and entertainers to perform in the Berwick Theatre, and Scholes also takes advantage of the Berwick Bus to go to the symphony, theatre and other events around town. The Active Living team continuously plans not just outings and events but
courses, quizzes, wine tasting, lectures, fitness, games, culinary demonstrations, and more. Last week residents celebrated Oktoberfest with a Bavarian feast and three accordion players.
“They had people dancing in the halls — as well as you can dance with a cane or a crutch!” he laughs.
EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS
Ed and Georgina Owens knew in their hearts that they needed a change but didn’t know quite where to start. So, they asked their daughter. She was about to take a years Sabbatical from her Professorship. They had made the move from Ontario and chose Victoria for their retirement destination. “We wanted our daughter and family to feel confident that we were comfortable and safe so they could continue enjoying their lives. That’s when we knew we needed a change and that it was time for us to call an independent living community home.”
So, they came up with a list of things that were important to them to help them make the final decisions. They knew they wanted to enjoy their retirement years and not be dependent upon our children and family for any needs that may arise. They
knew they wanted a community that provided and supported their continued independence, a community that offered a life full of opportunities for their preferred lifestyle: good food, recreation, fitness, outings, and transportation. After choosing to call Berwick House home, our children feel comfortable with our decision and this has allowed them to continue with their lives.
NEWLY SOLO, HE SOUGHT COMMUNITY
When his wife passed away, retired RCMP officer Ken started his journey in search of community living. He moved from Powell River and was surprised to see there was a number of people he knew from Craig Bay now calling Berwick Parksville home. The town also rekindled memories of family vacations camping on the beach in Parksville.
“It brought back positive memories of small-town life,” he says.
After considering many options he set his sights on Berwick Parksville. Since moving in, he’s been committed to cycling and joined the Parksville Golden Oldies Sports Association, on top of all the events inside Berwick that keep his social calendar full. berwickretirement.com

Van Isle Windows Ltd.
Van Isle Windows Ltd. - A Canadian Owned Company, Manufacturing and Installing
Since 1978
We are extremely honoured and proud to be recognized again this year as the Readers Choice in the Window Category. This makes it our 6th consecutive year in a row, and we want to thank everyone who took the time to vote for us. Our valued customers are a huge key to our success and we are both humbled and grateful for this recognition.
Van Isle Windows has a long history in the window industry on Vancouver Island. We have showrooms in Victoria, Nanaimo and Courtenay and have been installing and manufacturing our windows and patio doors since
1978, from our factory in Victoria located at 404 Hillside Avenue. We have been in this location for 45 years, having manufactured and installed literally hundreds of thousands of windows and patio doors across Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands during this time. We have the knowledge and expertise and that is what makes Van Isle Windows the number one company of choice.
All of our vinyl windows and patio doors are made locally, right here on Vancouver Island and our employees take extreme pride in their work. Whether our customers are replacing their old windows or building a new home, every window or patio door we manufacture is custom made for our customers by our experienced production team, which includes employees working in the vinyl, insulated glass, screen and paint shops.
For those customers who have us remove their old windows, and replace them with our windows, we have a talented group of experienced installers, available island wide. Everyone working at Van Isle Windows is committed to providing our customers with quality products and service.
We are extremely proud to be able to offer our customers the most efficient, high-performance windows on the market today in either double pane or ENERGY STAR® triple pane qualified. All of our sliding windows, casement style windows and patio doors come with these options, which are also available to customers in both the home renovation and new construction markets. This means that our customers can work with various budgets per their needs, and also have a variety of window choices depending if they want to be active participants in reducing their carbon footprint, or, are looking for higher energy efficiency.
In addition to our locally manufactured windows and patio doors, we also resale and install entry doors, skylights and sun-tunnels, providing one-stop shop in these similar product lines. If you’re interested in our windows, patio doors and our resale products, come and visit one of our showrooms, which are open Monday to Friday or by appointment on weekends. You will have the opportunity to discuss your project with one of our many knowledgeable Sales Consultants, and be provided with quality customer service and care throughout the process.
Having been in business since 1978, we have a proven track
record, and our warranty is our guarantee of our quality. We are all islanders just like our customers and have a team of qualified employees who have years of experience in everything from sales to installations.
Our island communities are very important to us, and we have supported many different initiatives over the years, however in the Spring of 2020, we identified a huge need and
since then Van Isle Windows are strong advocates of our local food banks. We have been able to donate over $90k to local food banks on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands and have made this an annual fund raiser. It’s the least we could do to say thanks, give back and provide some assistance to those less fortunate.
Visit our factory and showroom in Victoria, or showrooms in Nanaimo or Courtenay, or online at vanislewindows.com (and on Facebook, Instagram or YouTube) or give us a call in Victoria at 250-383-7128 or toll free at 1-800-361-2221 and let us help you with all of your windows, patio doors, insulated glass units, skylights and suntunnels, or entry door projects.
We are Your Island Window Factory! Thanks to all of our customers for trusting us and for supporting and investing in our island’s local economy.

Grooms by Em
A lifetime of dogs, dog grooming, dog shows, and more!
Grooms by Em was Born from the idea of providing and setting high standards, quality, friendly environment and of course a touch of Emily’s magic to every pooch that comes for a spa day. As a big family decision, in 2019, they decided to merge passions, talent and skills to form a strong and dynamic team. By the age of 24 and 29, Emily and Hector Uriostegui Dorma took a leap to become enterpreneurs and business owners.
Since Grooms By Em opened, success has been on the rise and the community has demonstrated its affection and love for this business and family. Proud to say they are the 2022 Cowichan Community Votes Platinum winners. Proud to help the community they live in, from humanitarian campaigns including helping raising funds and donating to the Red Cross
for the people in Ukraine, to gathering food, clothes and toiletries for local people who need it in the community.
Having just opened a new business the pandemic was a shock for them, however, they persevered and created a safe, sanitary environment to continue operating, when it was safe to do so. Thriving their business during a time of such uncertainty and troubles. They really gave their all to become the successful
grooming shop that it is today. Co-Owner and founder, Emily, has championed hundreds of Canadian Kennel Club (CKC), American Kennel Club (AKC), and International (INT) top dogs. She has shown in the New York Westminster Dog Show, winning “Best of Breed”. From Hawaii to New Brunswick her experience with dogs had led to many best in shows and specialties in many of the dogs she has campaigned.
Emily’s vast, and in-depth experience has made her knowledgeable on all breed standards. From the industry of grooming this has furthered her career to being as successful as it is. Winning highly sought-after awards in all competitions she has entered.
Grooms by Em is proud to say that they are certified groomers by the Canadian Professional Pet Stylist, the only federally registered not for profit certification association for Dog Groomers in Canada. Both Emily and Hector have DogSafe Canine first aid certifications. Hector is certified as a K9 Oral Hygiene Specialist by the founder of Anesthetic free teeth cleaning in Canada, K9 BriteBark.
Short haired, long haired, NO HAIR-ED! They treat each loving pup as one of their own. Additionally, they specialize in show and creative grooming. Their line of environmentally friendly, Gluten Free, Parabens free, Jojoba, Moronga and other specialty natural oils make a big difference in their furry friend’s coats. They take pride on their work, guaranteeing that no pup leaves the shop stinky and all are free of mats, you can pass a fine-tooth comb thoroughly, from nose to tail!
From baths to full grooms, from nail trims to certified anesthetic free teeth cleaning, their goal is to be the best one-stop grooming shop to help your loving pups smell wonderful, feel incredible and shine beautifully in a friendly and professional environment in breathtaking Vancouver Island.
Winning a platinum award from the Cowichan Valley Community Votes, and now the Times Colonist Reader’s Choice Awards in 2022 has been a tremendous accomplishment for their self-owned & run business. They wouldn’t be able to accomplish all they have without their family, friends and dedicated clientele. A message from Em and Eco; “This award means a lot to us, because the community is spreading the word about Grooms By Em. We feel honored to call Vancouver Island our home and grateful to the community for supporting our business. A big thank you to all our supporters, advocates and Times Colonist for giving local companies a local platform to be seen and recognized.” facebook.com/ groomsbyemmillbay/

EASE HOLIDAY OVEREATING DISTRESS WITH ENZYMES
Over the holidays most people tend to over indulge in food and drink, as fun and feasting go hand in hand. I could say the best thing is to not over eat in the first place, but where’s the fun in that? However, often there is a price to pay because overeating can cause digestive distress. Digestive enzymes can help ease some of the ‘tummy troubles’ over the holidays and on a regular basis.
Digestive enzymes are produced and secreted by the gastrointestinal system to breakdown fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, that facilitate digestion and absorption of nutrients. There are three primary types of enzymes:
• Amylases: break down carbohydrates into simple sugars like glucose
• Proteases: break down proteins into amino acids
• Lipases: Break down fats into fatty acids
Digestive enzymes such as bromelain, amylase, cellulase, lactase, lipase, and protease are some of the key enzymes that have been shown to help support digestion when taken with or directly after meals. These three types of enzymes alone will help digest the majority of most meals and they work synergistically to help support optimal digestion.
In addition to over eating and drinking in general over the festive season, the abundance of sweets and rich desserts are a huge temptation for everyone. Those who have intolerances to lactose and gluten may find the holidays particularly challenging and be unable to resist.
It is estimated that 75 percent of individuals worldwide experience some degree of
lactose intolerance, even though many may not be aware of this and attribute their gut discomfort to other causes. Lactose is a natural sugar found in milk products while casein is the protein in milk. Many who have a lactose intolerance also have trouble digesting milk protein. Taking a supplemental lactase enzyme combined with proteases can help digest lactose and casein and reduce or even eliminate uncomfortable gut symptoms.
Gluten sensitivity is also a common problem and for those with either celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity, it is important to consider taking
a digestive supplement that combines protein-digesting enzymes (proteases) and a specific gluten-digesting enzyme called dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV). These enzymes help reduce or eliminate the symptoms of gluten intolerance. DPP-IV is thought to be one of the key enzymes responsible for the digestion of these proteins and is found in lower amounts in the intestinal lining of individuals with gluten intolerance.
While following a gluten, casein/lactose free diet usually reduces uncomfortable symptoms there are times when a person chooses to indulge or there are often hidden sources
of these in foods. That’s where supplemental digestive enzyme preparations come in—they help people tolerate lower levels of gluten, casein or lactose intake and enjoy the odd dessert without regret.
Several formulations of digestive enzymes are available on the market, each being different in terms of enzyme type, source and origin. Talk to the knowledgeable staff at the Vitamin Shop to help guide your choice of a blended mixture that suits your digestive needs whether it is for the festive season or to aid digestion on a regular basis.

Bin 4 Burger Lounge contemporizes the classic burger, making it gourmet with fresh ingredients, toppings and sides. Burgers are no longer only about the beef. They’re about what you put on it, in it, next to it and what you wash it down with.
Catering to all ages and tastes, the menu extends beyond burgers and incorporates gluten-free and vegetarian options.

The first month of the year is always a refreshing new start.
And although this January may feel a bit different because of the economic challenges we faced throughout 2022—the good news is there’s always a path towards your financial goals. Try these three tried and true pieces of financial advice that can help set you up for a successful 2023, no matter what the economy throws your way.
Our first piece of advice: change the way you think about saving. A good first step is to switch from spend-thensave method to a save-thenspend system. So instead of
using your paycheque to buy all the things you want and saving what you may (or may not) have leftover, flip the pattern and set aside your savings before spending the remaining funds.
Creating a budget, setting goals and automating your savings will also help you succeed.
The second piece of advice we have is: get the ball rolling on your investments. Don’t let the doom-and-gloom headlines in the news intimidate you. Make an appointment to meet with an Investment Advisor and have them walk you through options that align with your goals and help you capitalize on the current economy, rather
than run from it. If you’re new to investing or just want a second opinion, an advisor can be a great resource for getting you on the right track to your goals, and even help you set them. And if you receive any retirement or RRSP benefits from your employer that you’d like to supplement, review this as well, so your advisor can get the big picture. If you’re ready to get started right away, great. If not, consider your meeting as an opportunity to explore your options and ask questions.
And finally, set SMART New Year’s financial goals. You can increase your chances of success by basing them
on the SMART acronym: S- Be specific. Instead of resolving to just “do better”, you might want to pick an area to work on, like your savings. M – Be measurable. A goal to “be a better saver in 2023” is hard to track, which means you can’t evaluate your progress. Like we said before, you might want to set a goal amount and a timeline for reaching your goal. A – Be achievable. While a challenging goal is okay, your resolution should be achievable or else your frustration will make you quit. R – Be relevant . Make sure your goal is appropriate for your situation and needs. For example, if you have debt
from high-interest credit card, paying this off will be a more relevant goal than savings. T –Be timely. You’re more likely to succeed with a timed goal, like saving three months of living expenses by July 2023.
In addition, another great tip is to take advantage of the experts. That’s what we’re here for. At the end of the day, either you’ll leave that appointment feeling more confident or you’ll walk out with a little more financial knowledge.

This accomplishment is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team. The recognition of the Readers Choice Annual Award is particularly personal to us at Heart Pharmacy as it represents the voice of the very people we exist to support. Thank you.
Heart Pharmacy has been supporting the community for over 30 years with the simple belief that everyone deserves access to highquality healthcare. Over time we have grown to six locations
and a team of more than 100 passionate staff members and clinicians. We’ve been privileged to collaborate with the BC Pharmacists Association and College of Pharmacy advocating for and implementing the ongoing expansion of scope in pharmacy practice. Most importantly we’ve built deep and meaningful relationships with over 50,000 patients across the island.
This year, we greatly expanded our clinical services to better support the health needs of our community. We increased our medication review services to ensure that our patients are taking their medications safely
and effectively, and we have also grown the frequency and range of our vaccination services to help protect our patients from preventable illnesses.
In addition, we’re proud to have grown our home-based medication administration program, Heart at Home. This program allows us to provide comprehensive care to patients who are unable to visit our pharmacy in person, and we are dedicated to helping our patients maintain their health and independence.
Our expanded clinical services are just one way that we are working to support the health and well-being of our local
residents. We also offer a wide range of products and services, including over-thecounter medications, natural health products, and health and wellness advice. Whether you are in need of a pain reliever, a natural remedy, or simply some guidance on how to maintain good health, we are here to help.
As we look ahead to 2023, we will continue to innovate and find new ways to support the health and well-being of our community. We’re also committed to maintaining the high levels of quality and personal care that our patients have come to expect from us.
We’ve expanded our staff to help meet the growing demand for healthcare, and we are proud to have a team of knowledgeable and compassionate professionals who are dedicated to providing personalized care to our patients.
We invite anyone who is in search of a pharmacy to join us and experience the high level of service and personalized care that has made us the best pharmacy in the area. Thank you again to all of our loyal customers, and we look forward to continuing to serve you in the coming year.

Happy Carpet Cleaners
Hi. I’m Ron Werner, Owner and Operator of Happy Carpet Cleaners. What makes me different?
I’m probably the slowest cleaner in town, a claim few want to compete with. I take my time and do my best. I’m also considered by my peers to be either the vacuum “nut” or the vacuum “king”! Why? Because I pre vacuum carpets REALLY slowly if needed. It only makes sense, remove the dry soils first before making it mud!! Other cleaners even started referring to my cleaning as “Wernering”! My last name became a verb!! Watch my videos on my website, YouTube, or FaceBook. My first video really turned some heads for Happy Carpet Cleaners - Like you’ll rarely see youtube/2cX12YXs7rk

Brown’s The Florist
As we near the end of 2022, we look back graciously at all that has bloomed and turned over a new leaf in all of our lives here in Victoria.
At Brown’s The Florist, we celebrated 110 years as a local florist in the community connecting generations of families and friends with flowers, over many lifetimes. We shared stories of the past and looked forward to the future as we renovated our downtown store on Fort Street. We felt and continued to feel immensely thankful for our customers; our local growers; our team, and all of the people who helped us to help you share your sentiments with flowers, plants, and floral gifts all year long. Thank you for sharing your memories and milestones with us, and thank you for voting for your favourite businesses during the 2022 Readers’ Choice Awards!
The holidays are winding down; our hearts still warm from all of the festivities, perhaps with even more
to look forward to. All three of our shops are still filled with the fresh scents of the season: fir, cedar, pine, and lots of fresh flowers, (not just the fragrance, but the real things too). Closing out a year and anticipating a fresh start gives us many reasons to celebrate! You might be taking the time to reconnect with loved ones you who you could not see over the holidays, or just wanting to bring beauty into your home during these upcoming weeks and the cold winter months. Luckily, even in the winter, you can choose plants and flowers that you love and that inspire you. You can know that so many of your favourites like roses, gerbera daisies, lilies, orchids, and more are still available at Brown’s The Florist, and locally sourced too.
Head over to BrownsThe Florist.com, call us, or come see us in-store. We look forward to catching up in 2023 and helping with all of your floral gift and plant care needs!
Romeo’s Place was created.
Romeo’s primary focus was signature pizza and pasta from recipes and techniques that had been passed down to the family. These staples created the name for the new restaurant and helped create a passionate local following. The menus included popular local dishes such as steaks, chicken and veal, burgers and salads, as well as other original dishes from their homeland — Greece. Delivery and takeout proved to be extremely popular options and the local market responded enthusiastically.
The first Romeo’s opened on Hillside and was warmly embraced by the people of Victoria. An instant success — this location was joined very shortly by a second location downtown on Johnson Street — very popular for lunch and dinner and still remembered fondly for fun-filled late night meals and crowds.
The Mavrikos brothers opened more locations on Vancouver Island, adhering to the same philosophy that brought them success in the beginning. With the help of their growing young families and new franchisees Nick and Chris Kamaretsos, the company grew to where it is today.
There are currently five Romeo’s locations on Vancouver Island
It is an exciting time for the Romeo’s family as we transition into the next chapter by opening new and remodelled locations. In April of 2012, we returned to the Downtown core with our location on the corner of Blanshard and Fisgard Street. This is our biggest location.
Another exciting change has been in Broadmead Village where, after 20 years, in the spring of 2014, we relocated to the mall beside the breezeway. This brand new restaurant has earned our customers’ loyalty and positive feedback and has exceeded our expectations.
Our Hillside location has also gone through extensive renovations and the feedback and response has been overwhelming. Our Langford location underwent of renovations and we are delighted with the |new look.
All four of our Lower Island restaurants have a similar modern look and contemporary feel. It truly is an exciting time for the Romeo’s family as we continue to evolve, and as always, hope our amazing customers will remain right there with us for the ride!
ROMEO’S PLACE 3 Col x 10.81 FLORIST
THE STORY OF ROMEO’S PIZZA Dimitri Mavrikos and his two brothers, Steve and George, came to Victoria from Vancouver with the dream of opening their own restaurant. Their goal was to open a restaurant that offered excellent food, great service and a fun casual atmosphere. They wanted a place that felt like home. In the summer of 1974,
and the family is honoured and blessed to be celebrating over 47 years in the restaurant industry. We continue to pride ourselves on offering great food and service at a reasonable price. Pizza and pasta recipes continue to stand the test of time and have garnered many awards and accolades.

Receiving this recognition means the world to us. It is why we do what we do. It is our Raison D’Etre.
Earlier in my career as Brewmaster at Swans, and then later at Canoe Brewpub, I would often (perhaps too often...) find myself in the pub looking out across the room and seeing people enjoying themselves. Coworkers talking shop, lovers deep in quiet talk, friends laughing heartily; all enjoying pints of beer that I had made. From those early days right up until today, for me as a Brewmaster, there is no greater reward.
True, some like to dissect beer and tease out the interplay of complex flavour characteristics. That’s fine. Many simply enjoy the taste and get on with having a laugh with their friends. That too, is fine. In Vino Veritas.
As an aside, this touches on why Hoyne refrains from entering its beer into contests. We feel that as well intentioned as they are, they kinda miss the point. Some argue that by their very nature, these contests are reductionist; reducing an enormous plurality of offerings to a handful of winners.
At Hoyne Brewery, our approach is to put our trust in you, our beloved customers, to be our judges.
This is why at the very heart of what we do at Hoyne Brewery lies one basic truth: We strive to make beer that you, our cherished fans, enjoy. Finely made beer is one of Lifes’ small pleasures, no more, no less. Thank you for letting us do what we love to do. Now cozy up by the fire with your best friend and enjoy a shared bottle of Gratitude.
Humbly yours, Sean Hoyne hoynebrewing.ca

Unsworth Vineyards
NEWS FROM THE RESTAURANT AT UNSWORTH VINEYARDS
After many years with Chef Maartyn at the helm of The Restaurant at Unsworth Vineyards, we have a changing of the guard! We want you to join us in welcoming Chef Lauren Cartmel as Executive Chef. Lauren has vast international experience working for top names in the restaurant industry, including cooking with world-famous Chef Gordon Ramsay. Most recently, Lauren owned and operated Ma Maison in Chemainus, where locals and tourists alike flocked to savour her inspired fare. Guests can expect the same Cowichan wine country casual at The Restaurant at Unsworth Vineyards—and yes, there will still be pizza!
As Unsworth continues to refine our guest experience, Chef Lauren will be expanding the food and wine pairing options at Unsworth Tasting Room & Terrace, so we invite you to come back often to see our evolving food program.
WHAT’S BUZZING IN THE VINEYARD
Unsworth also welcomed Viticulturist, Felix Egerer, to the team in November. Felix has spent years in the Okanagan pushing the boundaries of sustainable and regenerative viticulture. Now that Felix has made Cowichan home, we will share our many sustainable and regenerative initiatives as we roll them out. Unsworth has long been stewards of our environment and community and will continue to deepen our commitment to
biodiversity and no-till farming, all while practicing a precision approach to the use of tractors and off-farm amendments and inputs. Felix sees our farm as one living, breathing entity and strives to not only minimize our impact, but leave our air, water, and soil healthier than we found it. All of this will also ensure the wines will only continue to improve! We will be launching a new sustainability page on our website illustrating all the exciting initiatives as they unfold.
ALL ABOUT PINOT NOIR
In case you’ve been under a rock for the past 5 years, Cowichan is making quite a name for itself on the back of the illustrious Pinot Noir grape. From vibrant and laser-focused sparkling wines, to beguiling rosés and red wines with a purity of fruit and silky texture, Pinot Noir is leading the way for top quality wines—and the world is taking note. In 2022, Unsworth received truly international acclaim winning a coveted Silver Medal for our 2019 Pinot Noir at the world’s largest wine competition—The Decanter World Wine Awards. Not only is this the highest medal a Vancouver Island wine has ever received at this competition, it ranked as high as other award winning BC Pinot Noirs. Canadian wine writer, Anthony Gismondi, also rated our 2020 Pinot Noir 92 Points, so we have high expectations for its results at the next Decanter Awards. Our 2020 Saison Vineyard Pinot Noir scored 93 Points and was gobbled up by our loyal UV Wine Club members, in a matter of hours upon release. If you didn’t get your hands on any, we allocated a few cases for the Cactus Club in Nanaimo, Victoria, and Vancouver Convention Centre locations, so you can still enjoy a bottle there!

Original Farm
At Original FARM Cannabis, we are cannabis educators and enthusiasts, sharing our passion and acquired knowledge with every customer. Our team provides unbiased guidance that helps you find the product that’s best for you.
Locally owned and operated, our Hillside, Downtown, Langford, Duncan and Kitsilano stores have proudly served
Vancouver Island and the lower mainland since 2015. Our mission is to empower our customers by helping them be informed; utilizing innovative technology, honest advice, and a shared love for cannabis, we continue our role as a leader in the industry.
In April 2015, FARMACY opened as the first municipally licensed cannabis retailer in Victoria BC, quickly reshaping
our community’s view of what a “dispensary” could be: a safe and welcoming environment for cannabis consumers to learn about the varieties of available products, their uses, effects, and methods of consumption. Since then, we became the first legal recreational cannabis retailer in Victoria, offering BC’s largest in-store selection, while continually pushing boundaries
to design a thoughtful, innovative user experience that anticipates what our customers need.
Whether you are new to cannabis, or an experienced connoisseur, our amazing staff is here to answer all your questions – come by and say hi.

WestCoast Appliance Gallery
We are honoured to be the number one appliance store three years in a row, and are incredibly grateful for the local support over the last 38 years. We couldn’t do it without you!
When WestCoast Appliance Gallery opened 38 years ago as a used appliance store, we didn’t imagine it would become the largest showroom in Victoria. What makes WestCoast Appliance Gallery unique is the values we hold and how this has made our customers happy. We value trust, reliability, integrity, ownership and diversity.
We build trust by getting to know our customers; learning as much as we can about their space, budget and style is essential to finding the right appliances. We offer a price match guarantee, so customers know they are getting the best deal.
We want to continue to be known for being reliable. No one wants an appliance to stop working unexpectedly, and that’s why we have lots of inventory in stock for when you need an appliance now. Our delivery team takes the time to remove your old appliances and install the new ones while recycling the old ones.
Integrity is essential to our business. From the start, we take the time to select only quality appliances that we know our customers will have great experiences using and look great too. All of our staff are factory trained and have immense knowledge about all the brands we carry. We work with you in all stages of selecting, delivering and installing your appliances.
Taking ownership of the appliances we sell is vital to our customer’s peace of mind. An appliance can be a big purchase for many families who rely on their appliances to do essential everyday tasks. If something goes wrong, we want our customers to know that we are going to make it right. We are authorized dealers
of the brands we carry, which means we offer repair service if something were to go wrong. We want our customers to be happy with their purchase long after they leave the store.
We value diversity and understand the best solutions are those that take into account different perspectives, ideas and cultural backgrounds. We are proud to be part of a community that helps our company be successful.
We have expanded our showroom to over 12,500 square feet, making us the largest home appliance showroom in Victoria. We are currently building the most extensive working Jennair kitchen display on the West Coast, where we will have live cooking demonstrations with professional chefs.
Our vision for the future is to continue to improve our showroom to showcase the latest trends in home and kitchen appliances. We hope to be Victoria’s number one appliance store for many more years to come, by listening to our customers’ needs.
CUSTOMER REVIEWS
G Rossi: “Amazing customer service from this company, I highly recommend them!”
A Hounsome: “We needed to order a new stove for our suite. I called to see if the one I has seen online that I liked was in stock. I got Cara on the phone who made the entire experience smooth and easy. The stove I had wanted was out if stock but Cara took the time to go over other options that worked with our budget and specifications for what we needed. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome and the great customer service I received. We will definitely be calling back and dealing with Westcoast Appliance when we need to upgrade our other appliances.
J. Ripley: “Kudos to WCA for all your help getting my new range to fit my kitchen. Fred even came out to the house to resolve my dilemma!! Will definitely recommend you guys and be my to go place for appliances, thank you”
T. Guise: “I just bought 3 new appliances from Westcoast Appliances and I’m really happy with them. My salesperson did an exceptional job finding me the right products and making good recommendations. He also made sure I did not have to wait long to have all appliances delivered and set up. Right from sales, to the gentlemen that delivered and installed everything, it was top notch. I highly recommend the whole team.”

Mayfair Optometric Clinic
Mayfair Optometric Clinic has been proudly serving clients from all over Greater Victoria at its current location for over 20 years. Dr. Stephen Taylor has been seeing patients for over 35 years since receiving his Doctorate of Optometry from Pacific University in 1986 and Dr. Trevor Peddle has been practicing in the city for 13 years after graduating from the optometry program at the University of Waterloo in 2009. Both optometrists at the clinic make use of the latest diagnostic instruments and cutting-edge medical research as well as their extraordinary depth of experience to help you maintain optimal eye health.
Routine exams not only check the health of the eye and visual system but may also noninvasively detect issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and other diseases that may require further investigation. Doctors of optometry work closely with other medical professionals to help ensure you receive the care you deserve.
Lastly, the newest imaging equipment and most thorough
examination can only get you so far if the results of all that data do not ultimately end up in the hands of skilled people. Many of MOC’s staff have decades of experience and are passionately dedicated to helping you achieve the best vision possible. If corrective lenses are recommended by the doctor, their team of optical experts will guide you through the newest frame, spectacle lens, and contact lens options offered from the top manufacturers in the world. Then they will precisely fit your eyewear so that you have comfortable vision that matches your lifestyle, flatters your face, and preserves your eyesight for a lifetime.
The doctors and staff work hard to earn every client’s trust and are proud of the work they do to help you “live your life with happy eyes.” They deeply appreciate the acknowledgment and support from their community as they endeavour to achieve this goal every day.
