rentwood Bay Village Empourium has been a gathering place to locals and a destination for those further afield since opening in the summer of 2015. A unique hybrid mix of gathering place and retail experience, Empourium offers high quality espresso drinks, freshly baked goods, and a delicious breakfast and lunch menu with Italian panini, salads, sandwiches and scratch-made soups among the popular choices. Local art adorns the wide curving wall, and a constantly changing array of gifts, apparel, cards and home decor make Empourium a great destination for retail therapy or holiday gift shopping. At the holidays, the store is a festive delight, filled to the brim with beautiful and unusual ideas for stockings and gifts, sourced from local makers and further afield. Apparel, decor, jewelry, beauty products, books, cards and handmade items are among the thousands of items in stock over
the holidays, making Empourium a destination for a delightful shopping experience. Instead of fighting the traffic at the mall, customers can leisurely stroll around the shop, sipping a latte or a glass of wine while crossing items off the list. Owners John Carswell and Alice Bacon both made a career change to pursue their dream of creating a space in their own neighbourhood that would draw on their skills and passions. John’s 25 years in television production and media, as well as his ”previous life” as a builder provided him with many of the skills needed to build the business and the brand. Alice’s background in live theatre and special events design as well as cooking were instrumental in developing their unique offerings. Most of all, a mutual desire to build community and enhance the village atmosphere of Brentwood Bay led to the creation of Empourium. The staff consists of a dedicated
team of locals with diverse ages and backgrounds, all with a passion for great coffee, food and excellent customer service. As one visitor commented, “I absolutely love this coffee shop! Their Malahat Mist/London Fog is so creamy and delicious and their breakfast panini are heavenly! They have a lovely range of sweets. They support local artists by carrying their art creations on their shelves and also host local musicians. I absolutely love the atmosphere and it truly shows that the employees love their jobs.” Located in the heart of the village in the Brentwood Crossing shopping plaza, Empourium offers plenty of free parking and proximity to a variety of other conveniences. Furthermore, the shop boasts a five-star ranking on Trip Advisor and other review platforms. In the words of one reviewer, “It is such a great spot for coffee, lunch and music! You don’t have to be a local to enjoy the sense of community they have brought to their lovely shop.”

crooge! No other character epitomizes a completely anti-Christmas spirit quite like stingy old Ebenezer. He is not particularly generous or kind to anyone, not even to himself! Three ghosts managed to purge miserly Scrooge, but special guest Steve Ivings has conjured up a few extra quirky ghosts at this year’s show, The Spirit of Christmas!, to get you into the Christmas spirit. The show will be on stage on Dec. 1, 2 and 3 at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney. Artistic Director Lena Palermo has curated music from the religious to the secular. Music honouring the birth of Christ, music celebrating a time we connect with family and friends, including the traditional English carol, The First Noel set to the classical music of Pachelbel’s Canon. Our show wouldn’t be complete without our master of ceremonies, Jim Kingham and our show band including pianist Christie Norman; percussionist Terry Erskine; guitarist Ryan Lainchbury; violinist Jessica Natale Woollard and bassist Gerry Klaassen as well as our lobby band, Night and Day Trio.
The Peninsula Singers consider it important to feature young talent. This year’s Spotlight on Young Artists features Reynolds Secondary School’s Bozo Brass Band, a highly talented and passionate group of musicians who entertain with complex compositions and a few theatrical moves. Internationally recognized STAGES Dance Co. are back with their energetic and dynamic performances choreographed by Kim Breiland. Please join Lena Palermo, the Peninsula Singers, young artists, dancers, and guests to kick off your Christmas 2023 celebrations with our show, The Spirit of Christmas! The Peninsula Singers support the Saanich Peninsula Hospital and HealthCare Foundation’s Music Therapy Program and Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank. The Spirit of Christmas! runs Friday, Dec. 1, and Saturday, Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. Tickets, adults $35 and children $18 available online at www. marywinspear.ca or the box office at Mary Winspear Centre, 2243 Beacon Ave., Sidney.

Diving into Hearing Aids (or at least dipping a toe)
I
’ve been an audiologist for quite a while and I’ve heard just about every excuse there is to avoid getting hearing aids, from “I’m too young” to “I’m too old” and everything in between. Some people even think accepting they have a hearing loss is the “beginning of the end.” Because of that, my goal in this article is to make taking the dive into hearing aids a little more inviting. Hearing loss generally happens so slowly that it can go unnoticed (or maybe actively ignored) for years. Bird songs slip away, children start to mumble, and spouses inconsiderately talk while looking out the window! Typically, there is a trigger that results in an individual showing up for a hearing test – an embarrassing comment made in a social setting, a mix-up at work, or a miscommunication straining relations with a loved one. Don’t wait for a total communication breakdown to book a hearing test. If you’ve noticed you’re turning the TV up, asking for repetitions, or getting tired when

any necessary adjustments or modifications. At the end of the trial, you decide if you want to keep the hearing aids, try something else, or return them and get the money paid for the hearing aids back – no strings attached. Most people comment on how easily they were able to integrate the hearing aids into their daily life and how surprised they are by the comfort and sound quality of the hearing aids. Comments like “I should have done this sooner” are common! Getting a hearing test isn’t the beginning of the end. It’s a chance to test the water so you can make an informed decision about the next steps. And if you’re ready, take the dive into hearing aids. We’ll be there with you. the demands on your hearing are high, it’s time to see an audiologist. At Hear Inc., we’ll review your history, complete a thorough evaluation of your hearing, review the findings with you and make recommendations for next steps. Recommendations might include ways to conserve the hearing you have left, further testing if findings are atypical, or a physician referral if a condition exists that may be medically treatable. If it’s determined your hearing has deteriorated to the point that hearing aids are recommended, appropriate options will be demonstrated in our virtual listening environments while features and benefits pertaining to your lifestyle, hearing loss, budget and cosmetic preferences are discussed. From there, you may choose to proceed with a 90-day hearing aid trial period. An appointment will be arranged to set up your chosen hearing aids and instruct you on their use and care. Over the next 90 days, you will return to the clinic a few times to monitor your progress and make

A beautiful job can be with crowns and implants, but you’d need the care of someone who does major reconstructive work and can schedule you and a lab in the next week to 10 days – that may be a big order. For the top, if you have the bone, “teeth-in-a-day” is possible but if you don’t and there’s a very large span of missing teeth in the front, you may have to have a transitional/temporary partial that is made so it won’t show the pink plastic or the silver hooks that are sometimes visible. A well-made partial can serve your aesthetic purposes; then more permanent work can be done when the wedding festivities are but a memory. These things can be done on a priority basis, but time is of the essence – act now.
