Incorporate flowers on your wedding day

apart from bouquets, flowers can enhance weddings in several different ways and take their cue from historical traditions.

W

eddings are special moments for couples and the guests they invite to share their happiness on their big days. Beautiful weddings require substantial planning, as every last detail must be considered for couples to enjoy the wedding of their dreams. Flowers play a big role in many weddings, and couples can add beauty and ambiance to the event by using floral arrangements in various ways. Modern floral arrangements are stunning, and many couples may not know that herbs, spices and flowers have been used in weddings for centuries. Today, flowers are used to decorate wedding venues, impart sweet fragrances and complement formal attire, but in ancient times they were used differently. Flowers were used to bestow good luck on the couple and keep bad omens away. Brides carried ar-

omatic flowers and spices to keep evil spirits from spoiling the festivities, and some even tucked bulbs of garlic into their bouquets. In ancient Greece and Rome, both the bride and groom wore garlands made out of strongsmelling herbs flowers around their necks or heads. These wreaths were considered gifts of nature, and thus extremely appropriate for a wedding. Traditionally, bridesmaids would be responsible for fashioning these floral components. In ancient Sweden, young girls would carry small bouquets of fragrant herbs down the aisle and the groom would put thyme in his pocket. These aromatics were thought to help keep trolls at bay. Besides warding off spirits or hungry trolls, flowers also served more practical purposes throughout history. During the Middle Ages, people bathed less frequently than they do today. Bathing might only have

occurred twice a year, once during summer and then again at Christmas time. Because many weddings took place in the spring, flowers were used to mask bodily odours. Not only were flowers and herbs carried, but they also would be sewn into clothing. Modern brides and grooms may no longer see their wedding days as times for opportunistic evil spirits. But that doesn’t mean that couples cannot borrow from ancient traditions and incorporate flowers into their weddings in various ways. • Wreaths and garlands: Ask the florist to weave small flower buds, berries and vines to a headband, wreath or piece of twine so that the bride and groom can wear these flowers in the way they were worn by ancient Greeks and Romans. When coupled with Grecian-styled wedding gowns, brides can look like beautiful goddesses

on their wedding days. • Fragrant favours: Tuck dried rose petals and other fragrant flowers into sachets that are embroidered with the wedding date and couple’s names. Guests can use these sachets to keep clothing smelling fresh in drawers or as subtle air fresheners around the house. • Edible flowers: Ask the caterer to make meals flower-friendly by including some edible blooms in the salad or as a garnish on meals. • Raining petals: In lieu of bubbles or birdseed, guests can shower the newlyweds with rose petals after the ceremony. • Memorial: Some couples like to honour departed family members. Floral arrangements with small placards can make for fitting memorials. — MC

t. Ann’s Academy, a National Historic Site, has a rich history in Victoria. This stunning location has elegant indoor, outdoor and combination settings available to suit your unique love story. Outside, the Academy grounds feature a variety of garden settings – two in particular that are ideally suited to outdoor ceremonies and receptions. The Novitiate Garden is very secluded, which makes it the ideal location for an outdoor ceremony and smaller reception. The verdant green manicured lawn, perimeter flower beds and gazebo create a pleasing, cozy atmosphere. For larger scale affairs, the Academy Green offers a sunny field as well as shade under the canopy of grand trees. Inside, the Academy offers a chapel, parlours and a spacious foyer. The chapel is

the true jewel of the Academy. Built in 1858, the chapel’s gently flattened arches and hand carved and gilded ornamentation is reminiscent of the baroque inspired chapels common in Quebec. With golden sunlight cascading through its original art-glass windows, the chapel lends an unequalled air of fantasy and romance to every wedding held within. Though historically Roman Catholic, the chapel has been rededicated as an interfaith chapel, welcoming everyone’s beliefs. If you prefer something less religiouslyreminiscent, St. Ann’s also has a theatrestyle auditorium with beautiful art-glass windows and a greater capacity for your special day. stannsacademy.com

The cost of getting hitched Getting engaged has and always will be a big deal. While marriage proposals are often steeped in tradition, some facts and fi gures about modern day engagements, courtesy of the 2018 Newlywed Report from WeddingWire, show just how much this special moment and all that surrounds it is changing.

The pressure to make marriage proposals extraordinary appears to be on the rise, at least for millenials. of the nearly 18,000 respondents who shared their stories via WeddingWire’s 2017 newlywed Survey, 72 per cent of millenials said they feel pressured to make their proposals highly unique, while only 45 per cent of Gen X respondents indicated feeling such pressure.

Proposals might be changing, but getting down on one knee appears to be an enduring tradition that millenials plan to keep in style. eighty-two percent of millenials indicated they got down on one knee to propose. in addition, the tradition of asking for parents’ blessing also remains popular among millenials, 72 per cent of whom sought such blessings before proposing marriage.

The average cost of an engagement ring was $5,000.

The pressure to pick out the right engagement ring appears to be subsiding. That’s because 50 per cent of survey respondents indicated they picked out the ring together.

married-couples-to-be appear to like comparison shopping in regard to engagement rings. The majority of purchasers looked at between two and seven rings before making a purchase.

While online shopping has changed consumer behaviour in a myriad of ways, couples still prefer brick-and-mortar stores when buying engagement rings. Thirtyone percent of purchasers bought rings online, but 63 per cent made their purchases in-person at brick-and-mortar stores.

Christmas Day is the most popular day to pop the question, followed by Valentine’s Day. Christmas eve, new year’s Day and new year’s eve round out the top fi ve.

how to spread the news of an engagement is perhaps the biggest change surrounding engagements. engagement parties were once the go-to way to spread the good news, but just one in four couples now have engagement parties. nowadays, 86 per cent of couples spread the news via social media. in fact, 10 per cent of parents find out about their children’s engagements via social media.

The days of a short engagement seem to be a thing of the past. The average engagement now lasts 13 months, and 28 per cent of couples are engaged for 16 months or longer.

hould a person hear that a couple “tied the knot,” it’s immediately known that they got married. But just when and where does the term “tying the knot” come from? The phrase “tying the knot” is steeped in tradition, though the origins of the phrase remain open for debate. One origin story states that tying the knot can be traced back to the Roman empire, when brides wore girdles that were tied in knots, and the groom had to eventually untie those knots to consummate the marriage. Tying the knot also may be traced to the custom of handfasting. The marriage contract was established between a bride and a groom by joining their hands together and tying them. Although accounts vary as to whether the hands were tied only during the ceremony or later, this is believed to be an ancient Renaissance or Celtic tradition. Others speculate that the phrase traces its origins to Hindu weddings in which brides and grooms tied a necklace of flowers as part of wedding tradition. Yet another theory suggests that the phrase can be traced back to the knotted string that supported beds prior to the use of metal springs. Therefore, in order to make a marriage bed, couples fi rst needed to tie the knot. Knots also represent a difficult-tobreak bond, which is why they have long been associated with marriage. In one unity tradition, couples may braid or knot together three strands, with one representing the bride, one symbolizing the groom and the third representing God as they join together in faith. Similarly, the phrase “getting hitched” is associated with knot-tying as well. The saying implies that two people are being tied together just like a horse is tied, or hitched, to a wagon. —MC

Choosing your wedding reception menu

eddings are memorable for a host of reasons. While couples remember their weddings because they mark the day they officially tied the knot, guests may remember weddings for other reasons, including the food served at the reception. Some wedding venues are known for their stunning landscapes while others build their reputations on unique interiors that provide unforgettable ambiance. Regardless of where wedding takes place, guests are liable to discuss the food served at the reception. Guests might rave about the escargot or complain that the fish was flaky, but couples who choose reception menus wisely can go a long way toward ensuring there are more compliments than complaints once the dinner bell rings. • Don’t zero in on specialties. According to The Knot 2017 Real Weddings Study, a survey of nearly 13,000 brides and grooms who tied the knot in 2017, the average wedding hosted 136 guests. While couples might be tempted by specialty dishes when choosing their wedding menus, couples who are hosting dozens, if not hundreds, of guests should keep things simple. • Consider potential allergies. In regard to entrées, make sure guests with food allergies can choose something that won’t make them sick. According to Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), common foods that cause the majority of allergic

reactions include peanuts, soy, sesame and shellfish. Wheat, milk and egg allergies are common in children. While such foods can still be served at wedding receptions, make sure to also include foods that are unlikely to trigger allergic reactions. Couples can ask guests to inform them of any food allergies. • Don’t hesitate to offer a favourite food. While specialty entrées might not be a great choice, especially at large receptions where lots of mouths must be fed, a couple who has a favourite food that’s symbolic of their relationship should not hesitate to offer it during the cocktail hour. For example, a couple who met in Thailand may want to offer a favorite Thai dish. • Offer an elaborate dessert. The last bite guests take is dessert. Couples who want their guests to go home raving about the food may want to offer something special after the entrées have been taken away. Some guests may not indulge, but those who do may end their evening thinking about the delicious dessert they enjoyed as the festivities drew to a close. If the dessert is especially unique, offer something more traditional alongside for more hesitant guests. Choosing a wedding menu should be fun. Menus should reflect not only couples’ tastes but also include some popular foods so no one goes home hungry. —MC

What if something should go wrong? E

very couple should consider PAL Insurance Brokers’ (Canada Ltd.) unique product called Weddinguard for their big day. Weddinguard is an insurance product that provides insurance coverage for the bride and groom’s wedding essentials, such as: • bridal attire • rings • wedding gifts • wedding cake and flowers • wedding photos and video • wedding stationery • rented property • loss deposits • wedding cancellation expenses • honeymoon cancellation expenses • liquor liability coverage for three • 24-hour periods, such as rehearsal dinner, ceremony and reception, and gift opening. The two most common questions related to PAL’s Weddinguard insurance are: “Why do I need this insurance?” and “What does this insurance cover?” The team at PAL asks future brides and grooms the following questions

when considering the need for a Weddinguard insurance policy: • What if your wedding dress is ruined before your wedding? • What if your wedding photographs do not turn out due to loss or damage of the original film, negatives or damage to digital media on which the images are stored? • What if the church and/or establishment cannot hold your ceremony/reception? • What if your fiancé or anyone in your family falls ill or worse? • What if Dad loses his job before the wedding bills have been paid? For most brides and grooms, the answers to the above questions are often unknown and can create anxiety and concern. A PAL Weddinguard policy provides peace of mind in relation to these concerns. The average amount spent on a wedding today is around $40,000 and can increase dramatically from there. For most people, weddings are a major investment and take months of planning. Weddinguard

Did you know? A first dance song at the wedding reception often sets the tone for the upcoming festivities and can exemplify just how newlyweds feel about each other. Couples may agonize over which song to choose, but there are many resources available that can help couples narrow down their options. Spotify, the popular streaming music service, has compiled a list of the most popular wedding songs for 2018 based on global respondents. Their top pick was Perfect by Ed Sheeran, a song that many might suspect was composed with wedding dances in mind. Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud, Etta James’ At Last, John Legend’s All of Me, and Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling in Love filled out the remaining top five spots on Spotify’s list. —MC

protects this important investment and provides protection against many adversities that can occur on or before the wedding day, including cancellation from most causes beyond the bride and groom’s control. Removing the fear of the unknown from your wedding day reduces your risk that your day will be ruined by certain factors that you have no control over. A PAL Weddinguard policy can greatly reduce those risk factors while protecting your investment in the most important day of your life. A PAL Weddinguard policy covers a great deal of potential issues that can occur on or before the wedding day. This means that if any bridal attire, including bridesmaid and groomsman attire, gets damaged or lost before your wedding day, a PAL Weddinguard policy will cover the cost to repair or replace it. If your wedding venue suffers a financial failure or if your wedding entertainer cancels, a PAL Weddinguard policy will cover the loss of your deposits. If your

wedding rings are lost or damaged, a PAL Weddinguard policy will cover the repair or replacement of your rings. If your wedding cake or flowers are lost or damaged, a PAL Weddinguard policy will cover the repair or replacement of them. If your rented property, such as outdoor tents, tables or chairs, etc., is damaged, a PAL Weddinguard policy will provide for reimbursement of such property. If your wedding or honeymoon has to be cancelled because of the illness of an immediate family member, for example, or because of a major weather disturbance, a PAL Weddinguard policy will cover the cancellation expenses. Please note that all of

the above-mentioned circumstances are subject to the level of coverage purchased and are governed by PAL Insurance’s Weddinguard wording. None of these portrayals are meant to be exhaustive or comprehensive, and this article is meant for information purposes only. Made from natural resin uniquely mixed to represent palettes of oil paint, this Visconti Van Gogh series is inspired by the artist’s color and technique. Each pen represents a specific Van Gogh painting; the name of the painting and artist is delicately engraved around the pen’s ring. The pen utilizes Visconti’s eighteenfaceted design, with the many edges enhancing its vivid colors. This Souvenir de Mauve (Flowering Peach Trees) inspired pink fountain pen features a stainless steel nib. A converter is included, and it also accepts standard international short cartridges. As a special, it comes in a special gift box that includes a matching bottle of a new Visconti pink ink.
