Discover Langford: “Golden in Setting, determined in spirit”
CITY OF LANGFORD PHOTO
“Over the past 27 years, Langford has worked hard to become a sports and recreation destination – not only for high performance athletes – but for all members of the community.” – Mayor Stewart Young City of Langford
Langford is the urban core of the West Shore, also known as the Western Communities. It is a young, growing community with a population of over 25,000 people who live in an ambitious and modern, West Coast style. With all that Langford has to offer residents, there is no better place to live the lifestyle of your choice.
T
he City of Langford is a bustling community nestled in the foothills of Mount Finlayson. One of several West Shore municipalities, Langford borders the District of Metchosin, the City of Colwood, the Town of View Royal, the District of Highlands, and the Juan de Fuca Electoral Area of the Capital Regional District (CRD). As well as being the commercial centre of the West Shore, Langford features many amenities including Goldstream Park, three world-class golf courses, mini golf, an outdoor pool, three lakes, a skating rink with a frozen river that runs in the winter to an outdoor frozen pond, numerous urban parks and hiking trails, Royal Roads University, Western Speedway, Wild Play Elements Park and a number of festivals. Langford is also home to several sports organizations including Tennis B.C. and Tennis
Canada, Grizzlies Hockey, Pacific FC, Cycling Canada, as well as many amateur leagues for baseball, dance, golf, lacrosse, swimming and tennis. Everyone in the community is welcome to participate in these sports and organizations.. Langford’s population is flourishing. With population growth at 19.2 percent between 2001 and 2006, it is the fastest growing municipality in the CRD and an ideal place for families to live and work. Business and population growth has allowed Langford’s progressive Mayor and Council to invest in community development. Beautifying city streets and creating more indoor and outdoor recreation options for residents are just a few of the City’s public projects. – langford.ca

PACIFIC FC: PROUD TO PAINT LANGFORD PURPLE
PACIFIC FC PHOTO
This Saturday, Aug 24, this dream will be realized with the Grand Re-opening of Westhills Stadium, with the Grizzlies playing Winnipeg’s Valour FC. “We’ve been looking forward to August 24th, and to the Stadium’s completion since we started this journey over 18 months ago,” said Pacific FC President, Josh Simpson. “With the addition of three new grandstands very tight to the field, we have one of the most intimate and exciting soccer facilities in the country.” The City of Langford has been witness to some historical moments throughout the inaugural season of the CPL. Pacific FC kicked things off on April 28 with a massive 1-0 win in the opening Coastal Clash versus HFX Wanderers FC in a sold out purple Westhills Stadium. A league built for the development of Canadians has seen the West Coast contingent feature up to seven U-21 players at one time. This squad represents our
region with a strong core of British Columbia players and coaches. Pacific FC follows a philosophy of development and is evident as Pacific completed the required U-21 game minutes ahead of any team across this country, with great local support throughout the community along the way.
“Langford is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada, and is an extremely progressive city. It’s been a fantastic experience so far to play in a community that truly embraces the value of sport.”
Westhills Stadium this Saturday, August 24. The 6,100 stadium will be packed, and we invite you to come out and experience the West Coast atmosphere in a wave of purple. “We’re trending towards a sellout on August 24th,” commented Pacific FC VP of Operations, Brad Norris-Jones. “We sold out the home opener back in April and have been focusing on making this game an even bigger and better sports experience for the fans. If you haven’t been to a game yet this season, this is the game to be at!”
– Rob Friend, Pacific FC CEO “At Westhills Stadium, we have built a top class sports and entertainment venue with one of the most intimate and exciting sporting environments in the Canadian Premier League. The feedback from the fans and players has been extremely positive, and we will continue to build one of the best professional soccer atmospheres in Canada.”

osh Simpson and Rob Friend had a burning ambition to found a soccer franchise in their home province in the new professional Canadian Premier League. Both played professionally in Europe at the highest levels, and represented Canada many times in World Cup qualifying, and knew the importance of alleviating the stigma of Canada being the lone developed nation without a domestic pro soccer league. After looking around the province at several locations, the dream was realized when the group behind what is now Pacific FC group met Langford mayor Stew Young. They found a receptive area and knew the search was over. “Langford is so forward thinking and understood what we are doing,” said Simpson, co-owner and president of Pacific FC. Young thought PFC’s ambitions dovetailed perfectly with the ethos of his growing community, which was already home to an expanding group of recreation sites for families and training facilities for national teams encompassing Rugby Canada, Cycling Canada, Golf Canada and Tennis Canada. Leigh Road heading up to Bear Mountain is festooned with banners of national team, athletes and has been dubbed “Olympic Way”. More than 100 Olympians in various sports are training in Langford. “It’s been 25 years of building recreation and sport in Langford,” said Young. “This is the culmination of a lot of hard work. We now have the best stadium on the Island.”
Congratulations to The City of Langford and Mayor Stewart Young on the Westhills Stadium Expansion and the Sarah Beckett Memorial Playground.
Thank you Langford for giving the “KIDS” somewhere to play!
Not that it was easy getting to the official grand opening of the revamped Westhills Stadium on Saturday when Pacific FC will host Valour FC of Winnipeg in a sparkling facility which has been upgraded to 6,000 seats from 1,718. The inaugural CPL season started in April with Pacific FC playing in a functional but not fully completed Westhills. With the finishing touches now complete, more than 3,500 tickets had been sold by last weekend for the officialceremony game Saturday. “We asked our fans to be patient. And they have been and have shown us such support,” said Simpson. “It shows our fan culture that they stayed with us through the building process. On Saturday, we will show them the finished product.” It includes a family area, fan plazas and permanent concessions and washrooms. A team of Italians from the seating company, operating in conjunction with Langford crews, worked through the winter spring and summer to get the project completed. It wasn’t easy, primarily due to several weeks of work lost because of the unexpected late winter snow. But it got done. Simpson compared it to the opening of Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre, where construction dust was still in the air and the paint was barely dry before the first event in 2005, prompting Rod Stewart and his band and back-up singers to famously take to the stage in hard hats. Young said cost of the stadium upgrade is about $10 million,
The Golf for Kids Charity Classic, hosted by ICONIX Waterworks is an annual, day-long event that supports children living with serious illnesses and many other charities in our communities. “Golf For Kids is the most important day of the year for Help Fill A Dream. Thanks to all the incredible people involved in this event, enough money is raised in one day to fill 75% of the Dreams we fill each year. Take a moment to think of the impact this has on Island children with critical health challenges and medical conditions. You are giving them the most wonderful gift of hope. Putting a smile on a child’s face is a magical feeling. Thank you for making so many smiles possible.” - Craig Smith, Executive Director, Help Fill A Dream Although our event day is focused on creating the greatest experience for all involved, we never lose sight of our main mission: raising money for children and families in need. Together, with your help, we have raised more than $6 million dollars for local children’s charities and initiatives. with Langford having $5 million put away for that purpose, and the rest coming through sponsorships and partnerships. “There is no such thing as no in Langford,” said Young. “Our development community has pitched in with such support. This has been a total community effort.” And it’s not done yet. Young envisions up to $10 million more of improvements being phased in, including a climbing wall. The stadium proper isn’t done, yet, either, said Simpson. “The power poles will be moved for Phase 2 and the rest of the stadium will be completed over the next two or three seasons with the far side grandstand,” he said. Opening concurrently Saturday will be the Sarah Beckett Memorial Playground in honour of the RCMP officer, wife and mother of two killed by a drunk driver in Langford. The playground is located directly behind the main grandstand of Westhills Stadium and in front of the Rugby Canada Al Charron Training Centre. Simpson, who came out of Juan de Fuca youth soccer to make 43 appearances for Canada and play pro in Europe, said he considers the Pacific FC franchise as a team for a market of 800,000 people, encompassing the entire Island. Young concurs. “We see Westhills Stadium as a regional facility” he said. A feature of the stadium is its European-soccer type intimacy, which Simpson and team CEO Friend sought, and believe Langford has delivered on. Fans will feel right on top of the sporting action. “We have achieved what we set out to in the design process,” said Simpson. “Fans are close to the field and the new grandstand behind

“Watching all this sport in our community in turn inspires our youth to be active.” – Mayor Stewart Young City of Langford the goal holds in the noise and creates that intimate Europeanstyle football atmosphere we were looking for. It works for the multiple sports the facility will host.” Westhills Stadium is also home to the Rugby Canada, including the 2019 Japan World Cupbound Canadian team and the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympicsqualified Canadian men’s and women’s sevens squads. While the B.C. Place hosts the men’s Canada Sevens, the Langford facility is the annual home of the women’s Canada Sevens and what an eyeful of improvements the national teams from around the world will see when they return to Westhills next May in what will be precursor to the Tokyo Olympics. Another team calling the expanded stadium home are the junior Westshore Rebels of the B.C. Football Conference. The Rebels are reveling in their new, proper football-size 64-locker dressing room, located beneath the newly-risen end-zone grandstand. “We love the stadium. It’s magnificent,” said Rebels president Rob Lervold. Langford Mayor Stew Young noted that his city is seeing plenty of sporting activity. “Watching all this sport in our community in turn inspires our youth to be active,” he said. –CLEVE DHEENSAW, Times Colonist cdheensaw@timescolonist.com

Langford Milestones Langford has a long history of European settlement. It was founded in 1851 when Captain Edward Langford established one of the four Hudson’s Bay Company farms in the Victoria area.

L
angford is the only one of Greater Victoria’s 12 surrounding towns to boast a genuine gold rush in its colourful past.
At the beginning of October 1863, a party of four miners were sent out by Governor James Douglas to prospect for gold in the Victoria area. On July 17, 1864, the discovery of gold on the Leech River became known and the miners abandoned their claims at Goldstream. Those who remember the much-maligned Langford of the mid 20th century are surprised to learn that it was once a favourite recreation destination for thousands of Victorians. Thanks to excursion fares on the new Esquimalt and Nanaimo railway, day-trippers visited the elegant Goldstream House in the 1880s and 90s. Hunters built their lodges on the shores of the lake near the mountains, and a summer colony of well-todo city folk spent time at Langford Lake.

SINCE
Langford went into an economic decline in the first part of the 20th century. It recently surprised everyone by becoming the fastest growing little city on Vancouver Island, with big box stores and new residential developments, and a totally new look for the sprawling district that incorporated in 1992 and became a city in 2003.

Downtown beautification has been a goal of Mayor Stewart Young and Council since Langford incorporated in 1992. The vision is now nearing completion. The new city core is a welcoming and colourful area with dozens of commercial spaces for entrepreneurs living in the condos above. An archway greets newcomers to Downtown Langford while a musical fountain entertains passersby from dawn ‘til dusk.
