We’re excited for what’s to come and grateful for your support as we work together to make Scotts Valley an even better place to live and work.
Hiram Scott, after whom Scotts Valley was named, led an extraordinary life. As the oldest son of a Maine sea captain, he sailed to California and made his fortune on a lucky gold strike in the Sierra foothills. He acquired Rancho San Augustin, which later became known as Scotts Valley. Hiram Scott built the Greek revival style Scott House in 1853. Situated behind City Hall, it is a Santa Cruz County Historical Trust Landmark, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Scotts Valley became a city in 1966 at a time when there were concerns about the City of Santa Cruz annexing the Sky Park Airport (site of the currently proposed Town Center). There were plans for it to become a cemetery and airport was closed in 1983, two years after Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, crashed his Beechcraft Bonanza at Sky Park, injuring his three passengers.
Tree Circus, Lost World and Santa’s Village: Tree Circus was created by Axel Erlandson, who moved his remarkable trees from the Central Valley to Scotts Valley Drive in 1946. Trees with trunks shaped like a heart, water tower, zigzag, needle and thread, castle, totem pole and telephone booth were all on display. The property was sold in 1983 and eventually, twenty-five of the trees were moved to Bonfante Gardens in Gilroy. The Lost World, constructed in 1959 on a 40-acre property adjacent to the Tree Circus that featured life-size replicas of dinosaurs with steel frames and fiberglass skins cavorting on the landscape.
Santa’s Village was built in 1957. Santa’s Village was a favorite of kids and was famous for Santa’s house, his sleigh, and Alaskan reindeer. The first Santa, Carl Hansen, was known as “Hocus Pocus”. He went on to star in his own TV show. Hocus Pocus Park was named in his honor in 1995.
The Famous “Barn”: during the 1960’s, well known bands, including Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin performed at the Barn. The Barn became a dinner theater in an RV park in the 70’s and ceased being a nightclub in 1968. It was torn down in 1991. The location is now Baymonte Christian School.
Movie director Alfred Hitchcock purchased a 200acre estate on Canham Way in Scotts Valley in 1940, with Monterey Bay views, as a second home and weekend retreat. The property is known as “Heart of the Mountain” and now serves as a winery. Dick Smothers of the Smother’s Brothers attended SJSU and called Scotts Valley home through the 70’s and 80’s.
On a hot summer day in 1997, Marc (Randolf) and Reed (Hastings) walked into Logos Books & Records in Santa Cruz, bought a CD of Patsy Cline’s greatest hits, and mailed it to Reed’s house a few blocks across town. When the CD arrived intact, they knew they had found their ticket to e-commerce glory. Netflix was founded in Scotts Valley 1997 and their website went live on April 14, 1998, with 900 DVD titles. Marc ordered the movie “Casino” as a test, it worked. Within 15 minutes the website crashed with so many orders and by the end of their first day they had 137 orders. Erik’s Delicafe was started as a small delicatessen in Scotts Valley by Erik Johnson in September 1973, Erik purchased the location for $429. The award-winning restaurant is known for their “Sandwiches with Character”. There are now 27 locations across the state.

Make Scotts Valley your basecamp as you explore the 14 California State Parks in Santa Cruz County. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park preserves a 40-acre old-growth redwood grove named after the 19th-century industrialist, Visitors can enjoy hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, swimming, and camping on more than 4,650 acres of forested and open land. We often separate the beach from the mountains, but the Santa Cruz Sandhills are proof that the two were once one. It is mind-boggling to think this area used to be the bottom of the ocean, but ten million years ago this was the case as evidenced by shark teeth and sand dollars scientists have found here. Feel free to impress your kids with that fun fact.
An array of outdoor options at the city’s largest park, Skypark that boasts four tennis courts, 2 Basketball courts, Bocce Ball Court, an enormous playground, BBQ pits, shaded picnic tables, and a gazebo, paved walking and bike trail lined with California native plants. Although the San Lorenzo Valley is a small community nestled inside one of California’s smallest counties, we have no shortage of family-owned businesses that enrich our everyday lives. From breweries and coffee shops to garden centers and hardware stores, our main streets are the backbone of our community and serve as gateways to boundless recreation opportunities.
As you travel and up and down Highway 9, the San Lorenzo Valley’s three town centers of Felton, Ben Lomond and Boulder Creek each feature an eclectic mix of grocery stores, restaurants and other small businesses.
Brookdale and Zayante are also home to iconic destinations, such as the Brookdale Lodge and the Trout Farm Inn. Felton Covered Bridge Park, Quail Hollow Ranch Park and Loch Lomond Reservoir are locally managed resources that compliment Henry Cowell Redwoods, Big Basin Redwoods and Castle Rock state parks – all of which provide wonderful places to enjoy nature.
With local tax measures approved in recent years, the County is poised to make record investments in infrastructure, climate resilience and disaster preparedness while managing our precious water resources. We work closely with business associations and state and federal officials to ensure we have a strong local economy that meets the needs of our residents and visitors alike.
Monica Martinez Supervisor, Santa Cruz County
The headwaters of the San Lorenzo River are just 15 miles from the city of San Jose and just 15 miles from the city of Santa Cruz, both thriving towns during the Mission period. Even so, a steep canyon, an almost impenetrable forest, and formidable Grizzly bears ensured that these headwaters remained largely unexploited by Westerners until the 1880s. Rich in natural resources such as vast forests of redwood lumber, tan oaks, and lime deposits, once discovered, this virgin landscape was pillaged and plundered. A few enlightened individuals understood that the clear cutting techniques of the lumber companies would soon result in the total loss of this natural wonder. Their endeavors resulted in the founding of California’s first Redwood State Park at Big Basin, saving this precious resource for future generations.
Today the San Lorenzo Valley (SLV) is home to just over 25,000 residents in the towns along the river of Felton, Ben Lomond, Brookdale, and Boulder Creek, Communities upslope from the river include Mount Hermon, Lompico, Zayante, and Bonny Doon.
The region is known for its abundance of state, county, and local parks, redwood trees, and sensitive species and habitats. Recreation, lodging, camping, shopping, and restaurants abound making the area a premier tourist destination in the Central California area.
The San Lorenzo Valley Museum operates two galleries, one in Boulder Creek, the other in Felton, both in former church buildings that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 2025, the Grace Gallery, 12547 Hwy 9, Boulder Creek will continue the lumbering story “A Cut Above the Rest” but with a focus on the shingle mills, tan bark operations, box, and barrel mills.
The Belardi Gallery, 6299 Gushee St., Felton, will see a new permanent exhibition centered around the early industries of the Valley and several temporary exhibitions including “The Way We Calculated” and “Telling Stories of Mexican California. Lisa Robinson

Membership Directory & Tourism Guide
The BCBA’s purpose is to maintain a healthy economic and cultural environment in this small, historic mountain town. We promote cohesive bonds between the various organizations representing the valley population and businesses while maintaining a positive sense of community, history and respectfully embracing the diversity of each individual.
The BCBA is a 60+ year old non-profit organization run by a dedicated group of volunteers and has a membership of over 100 businesses. In addition to serving the local businesses, the association hosts several events, some of which have been celebrated for generations and all of which are enjoyed by community and tourists alike.
With years of hard work and fundraising, the BCBA is continually reviving the historic charm of the town core with projects like adorning the building trims with lights and installing acorn streetlights to light a nighttime stroll. Included in this ongoing town beautification project is the installation of historically appropriate street furnishings to make downtown more welcoming to locals and visitors alike. The many benches that have recently been installed create a more social shopping experience and you’ll often find friends using them for a chat and catching up. In 2019, a BCBA commissioned mural in the town center was completed by local artist, Yeshe Jackson, which depicts key people and places in the town’s history. The BCBA is also a partner in the memorial mural of Albert, the white peacock who has been the town mascot for 3 decades, that will be painted in 2025, also by Yeshe Jackson. The BCBA is building its network by collaborating with other local organizations and creating more committees that will be able to each focus on specific projects that will enhance the Boulder Creek community and the downtown business core.
The BCBA is an unwavering advocate for pedestrian safety initiatives and improvement projects in the downtown core. By working with local, state and federal government organizations (Supervisor Monica Martinez’s office, the Regional Transportation Commission, Caltrans etc.), we are able to promote specific projects that will address the needs of the community at large.
For information about the BCBA, send an email to info@bcba.net or visit bcba.net.
The BCBA helps unite local businesses for purposes of advertising, promotion and economic growth by providing resources for opportunities and platforms for collaboration. We host periodic
mixers at local shops where businesses and the community can mingle. During the 2020 shelter in place order, we created a Facebook page called Shop and Dine Boulder Creek where all local businesses can connect with their customers, and advertise free of charge. This page will continue as a free advertising platform for local businesses.
We also have a community calendar on our website for member businesses to advertise and community members to find what’s happening in town. With these and other methods, we make every effort to connect our local businesses with the community and visitors. We also protect our businesses by working closely with our local and county officials, sharing concerns and questions that pertain to our community. Member-ships and sponsorships help to fund these promotional activities and our ongoing projects to improve the downtown experience.

There are many great restaurants throughout the San Lorenzo Valley. Start your day with a specialty coffee at the Boulder Creek Tree House Café or the famous pancakes at Bella’s Café. Quick bites and hearty meals can be found to satisfy anyone’s taste buds such as the deli and salad bar at Wild Roots Market, the Creek Combo at Boulder Creek Pizza, apricot almond chicken at the Red Pearl, a Chicago dog at River Dog’s of Boulder Creek, or a burger at the Sawmill. The historic Scopazzi’s Restaurant is a must for everyone and every occasion with meals ranging from a BLT to cedar planked salmon! Don’t forget to top it off with tiramisu for dessert! Speaking of desserts, pastries and custom sweets to indulge in can be found at Dessert First or Vicki’s Chocolates. Restaurants with live music can be found at many locations including the Felton Music Hall, the Trout Farm and the Brookdale Lodge.
The historic Brookdale Lodge has both lodging and a fabulous diner. Farther up the mountain, cabins at Masood’s Lodge can be rented. There are many retreat centers nestled in the redwoods including Camp Campbell YMCA and the Mount Hermon Conference Center. Small groups needing a condo can check out the Boulder Creek Golf & Country Club. Whether you’re wanting a place to rest your head after a day of climbing at Castle Rock, here for a corporate retreat, or a local resident just wanting to treat yourself for a weekend, we’ve got you covered!
We all love supporting our small businesses, the backbone of our economy. And you can’t beat the variety and charm found in the San Lorenzo Valley shops. If you’re a fan of vintage, we’ve got stores like Boulder Creek Antiques or Swag in Boulder Creek, Abbott’s Thrift in Felton, and many more in between. Lille Aeske, Air & Fire and Viscosity Glass have everything you need to satisfy all your senses with handmade scents, herbal remedies, glass blowing classes and local artwork and musicians. Shoppers looking for gifts and keepsakes will love shops like Simpatico, Raven Ridge Homestead and Mountain Spirit. For the campers, hikers and adventurists, we’ve got Scarborough Home Center and Becks Shoes that can get you set up! While you’re in the area, be sure to stop by the San Lorenzo Valley Museum to see their latest exhibits and learn about the rich local history. And don’t forget self-care! Book a massage or take a class at Elevated Wellness or Treetop Pilates.
The Santa Cruz Mountains are ripe with vineyards, most with tasting rooms, and local breweries. They make up a large portion of the 70 wineries and 12 breweries found in Santa Cruz County. Choices for your tasting tour include, but certainly are not limited to, Hallcrest, David Bruce, Byington, Big Basin and Pelican Ranch Vineyards and newly opened Humble Sea Brewery. Many of these handcrafted wines and beers can be found at local restaurants like the Boulder Creek Pizza & Pub and the Sawmill Restaurant and Ale Room.

The first five years of a child’s life are critical to their health and success. We provide FREE (California State Preschool Program) early education, from the redwood mountains in the San Lorenzo Valley to the vibrant fields of Watsonville. We serve infants through TK with the guidance of highly experienced, bilingual/bicultural staff who understand the importance of play and social emotional learning as the key foundation for academic success and ignite a love of lifelong learning. Our centers maintain low teacher-to-child ratios of 1:8 for preschoolers and 1:4 for toddlers. Together we’re better.
