The project has been issued a stop order by the Planning Department. This was after it had initially given its go-ahead in March. The field was to be constructed at no cost to the

school district. It was a volunteer effort headed by the Aptos Sports Foundation (ASF) to finish an already planned athletic practice field. The county’s unplanned-for interference will now cost the Pajaro Valley Unified School District at least

$100,000 in staff and consultant time and will delay the availability of the field for at least 1 to 2 years past the planned completion date for its opening to local sports teams

Aptos Junior High Presents ‘Beauty and the Beast’ he 8th Grade Drama Class at Aptos Junior High will present an entertaining and action-packed rendition of the popular fairy tale Beauty and the Beast.

The performances are on Wednesday, Oct. 17 and Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7:00 pm in the Aptos Junior High gym. Admission is $5.00 per person. All ages will enjoy this humorous and poignant tale of Beauty and the Beast.

••• Outside the Box 2 fter discovering the Santa Cruz County Parks Department’s “Outside the Box” public art program, I found other artists and their work along our streets. At the intersection of State Parks Drive and Soquel Drive, there is another example of this program. The formerly bland gray metal box is now a brightly colored three-dimensional painting showing the activity of gardening.

According to the artist, Ann Theirmann, “I wanted to show the interaction between people and our environment, a nurturing relationship that shows the necessity for people to take responsibility for their treatment the natural world.”

Ann is a muralist and has helped to make our communities visually more exciting and colorful. She is a classically trained landscape and figurative painter has designed over seventy murals for natural history museums, art museums, libraries, and educational institutions throughout California. Ann shares her expertise through college classes she teaches at both Cabrillo and Monterey Peninsula Colleges.

Mathias of Aptos was appointed to the Cabrillo College Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee on October 9. The Committee supervises the expenditure of a $118.5 million bond approved by Santa Cruz County voters in 2004 and reports their Brian Mathias findings to the public.

Mathias attended Aptos High School, Cabrillo College, UCSC, and the Monterey College of Law. Mathias, 27, is an attorney with the Law Offices of Timothy J. Morgan in Santa Cruz, periodic litigation counsel to the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association.

He also serves on the Santa Cruz Host Lions Club Board of Directors and is a past vice-president for the Santa Cruz County Fair Board.

••• Library Friends Fall Book Fair Oct. 19-20 he Friends of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries will hold its fall book fair October 19 and 20 at the Civic Auditorium in downtown Santa Cruz.

The fair will be open to Friends members only from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday and to the general public on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Books sell for $1.50 per lb. on Friday night and Saturday morning.

At 1 p.m., the price drops to $5 per grocery bag.

All proceeds benefit SCPL’s 10 local branches in Santa Cruz County. Fair coordinator Ron D’Alessandro says there will be more than 20,000 used books, books on tape, CDs and DVDs to choose from, as well as used ereaders — all donated.

Kate Canlis of Aptos, an attorney, was a prosecutor and judge for more than 30 years before retiring earlier this year. She was the District Attorney of Santa Cruz County from 2000 to 2003.

“Aptos Field” from pg 1

Those involved in the volunteer effort, the ASF and the PVUSD, are continuing to try to convince the county that the Planning Department’s actions are unnecessary and unprecedented. According to Brett McFadden, PVUSD financial officer, “When Paul Bailey of the ASF came to me with the idea, the first action I took was to research how to do the project legally. I found no history of county involvement in construction projects on what is essentially state land being supervised by the PVUSD.” Because of Measure J bond funding; several major construction projects had in recent years been completed on the Aptos High School Campus under state supervision and without involvement by the County Planning Department. These projects included a new ball field, tennis courts, parking lot, a football stadium, swimming pool and the new gym/performing arts center.

A series of emails went back and forth between the County and the School District last March. The contents included an inquiry by Supervisor Ellen Pirie, and a response by County building official Tony Falcone to Planning Director Kathy Previsich on March 27, in which he said “We have no jurisdiction on the school property“ indicating that the county would not be involved because public schools are usually exempt from oversight by local government.

The Aptos Sports Foundation then organized the effort to build the planned sports field next to the school entrance off Freedom Boulevard. The field measures 225 x 400 feet and is designed for soccer, lacrosse, flag football and other field sports and was to be covered in natural grass.

Paul Bailey of the ASF said, “When we saw all the fill dirt that RWG Construction was having to find a new home for as they were widening Highway 1 between Morrissey and Soquel Drive, we contacted them and asked if we could have some.

When they said yes, we approached Aptos High School Athletic Directory, Mark Dorfman and Principal Casey O’Brien about constructing the new field and they said yes.

After working out the financial side and permissions with Financial Director Brett McFadden of the Pajaro Valley Unified School District, the project was on.”

The Foundation then got busy designing the field and raising money for the project. It took 29,000 yards of dirt moved from the freeway right of way near Morrissey to Aptos for the field, which was delivered, compacted and graded at no charge by RWG. The next step was to have been installing the fencing, the watering and drainage systems, and planting the grass.

McFadden estimates that the completed cost of the field to the District would have been at least $660,000 without all the donations of material and time and field-related expenses such as grass, fencing, drainage and irrigation. All the volunteers were hard at work to complete the project by the end of August in time for the fall semester.

However, a former county planning department employee, Kim Tschantz, lives across Freedom Boulevard from the field.

He represents some of his neighbors and used his planning department experience to convince the Planning Department that a grading permit and review for compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) were required.

Tschantz has also said he and his neighbors have issues with the athletic field regarding noise, traffic, lighting, security, landscaping and endangered species. When asked why the County had not required grading permits in the past for Aptos High, he said that this project was not part of building construction and so fell under the aegis of the County Planning Department and its regulations.

A “Stop Work” order was issued and notice was given by email on July 2 by Kent Edler, senior Civil engineer for the County that said, “…no more work may occur until a grading permit has been issued. For the grading permit, we will need grading and drainage plans prepared by a civil engineer showing what work has been done to date as well as what is proposed.” The PVUSD didn’t receive an official order from the County until three weeks later.

McFadden said that the county is asking for at least four actions by the school district before the field can be completed:

1. A grading permit which, according to County Planning director Kathy Previsich, will cost $12,500 2. Soil analysis 3. Soil compaction report 4. Biology report to ensure no endangered species are involved And an EIR (Environmental Impact Report) and even a CEQA (California Environmental Quality Act) review may be required which could take up to two more years to complete and be approved before the field can be finished.

As it is now, the uncompleted field has become a public nuisance with late night drag races because it has no fences and it could present a drainage problem because it is now just bare ground with no permanent drainage structures.

If the County hadn’t stepped in with a stop work order, the field would now have grass, fences, drainage and kids playing.

According to Aptos lacrosse coach Paul Murtha, “We have to practice on the parking lot, on the beach and anyplace we can until they kick us out. This field was going to make it possible for the team to practice on real grass.”

Another major usage was to be soccer. With so many teams including high school boys and girls JV, Varsity and club teams, the facility was set to provide a major sports resource for the community. Now it is just dirt and rocks for at least the next year or possible even two.

As one of the lacrosse team members said, “Why did they do this? Why do they always have to make things so difficult.”

Man of the Year Pastor René Schlaepfer Teaching Pastor Twin Lakes Church astor René Schlaepfer took the role of senior pastor for Twin Lakes Church in Aptos in 1993. While a majority of his time is spent in the weekly sermons and encouraging community outreach projects for the congregation, he has also seen the church through three major building renovations.

In addition, Pastor René is an author of five books “Thrill Ride”, “The Hope Experience”, “God Is”, “Grace Immersion” and his fifth book, “Jesus Journey”, was just released. Currently about 22,000 books have been sold.

Pastor René has become a valued speaker at conferences throughout America, Mexico and Africa. He goes above and beyond leading mission trips around the world and sharing his resources to create leaders. He has currently embraced multimedia utilizing the Internet to increase Pastor René Schlaepfer accessibility of his ministry to everyone at any time through podcasts and video sermons.

Pastor René has a huge influence on the lives of members in the community, encouraging adults and children to learn the rewards of being active in our community. Many organizations in the area use Twin Lakes Church as a hosting place for community events. Twin Lakes hosts one of the largest garage sales that anyone has ever seen with all the proceeds benefiting local organizations.

Pastor René has been active with Second Harvest Food Bank for 7 years, serving as co-chair for the past two years.

Last year he made national news with the record-breaking food drive for Second Harvest in which he challenged his congregation of 3,600 individuals to donate one million pounds of food by Thanksgiving.

During this event, children and adults became involved selling handmade crafts door to door, performing chores in exchange for donations; even foregoing Christmas presents to provide donations.

This event was a testament to René Schlaepfer’s ability to inspire, unite, and organize members of this community.

was part of a leadership team that recruited a dynamic executive director who has transformed the Museum into a thriving hub of local art, history, and culture. In 2002 Gwen was Cochair of the Committee for Measure J, assisting in the successful campaign to pass a $58 million bond issue which financed a new gym, performing arts center and swim center at Aptos High School Gwen Kaplan As a volunteer for Valencia Elementary and Aptos Junior High Gwen initiated the annual Walkathon and Career Days, served on Site Council and District-wide Site Council, and has given her time to workdays, the GATE program, and teacher appreciation. Gwen also served as a member of the Aptos High facilities planning committee.

Gwen has been a volunteer for the Aptos Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Education and Community Enhancement Committees. From 1997 to 2001, she served as the Alternate Planning Commissioner for the 2nd District of Santa Cruz County. Gwen is a former President, Board Member and ongoing volunteer for Temple Beth El & Jewish Community and is currently a member of the board of directors of the Forest Meadows Homeowners Association.

Owner of Steps Dance Studio Dies Suddenly

t is with great sorrow that Steps Dance Studio announced the loss of owner/director, Carrie Dianda McCoid, who passed away Wednesday,

October 3 at Watsonville Hospital from a sudden illness. She died three days after first showing flu-like symptoms.

McCoid worked at Bailey Properties as a realtor before she took up teaching dance at Steps Dance Studio in 2008. She loved dance and fulfilled her dream of owning and operating her own dance studio when she sold her beloved 1968 Camaro to buy the business in 2010.

McCoid also volunteered limitless hours to the Hot Rods on the Beach event, serving as its director. Originated in 1998

by McCoid’s father, Bill Dainda, the classic car show has become a local fixture. The show is an annual event that donates its proceeds to the Industrial Arts Scholarship Fund. This year’s show was held Saturday and Sunday October 13 – 14 at San Lorenzo

Park in Santa Cruz.

A press release from Step Dance Studio said, “Although owner and director describe her official capacity at Steps, these titles cannot express the position she filled in our lives and our hearts. Carrie was a nurturing, joyful dance teacher. She was an inspirational friend whose immense strength was put to test by tragic life events that she surmounted with a grace and light not to be forgotten. We will all miss her dearly.”

Carrie, 37, was mother of 16-year-old Jakob and her four-month-old daughter, Maryella and a recent widow. The family experienced another tragedy this year when her husband, Joshua McCoid, died March 18 when his SUV struck a tree next to the State Park Drive onramp to south-

bound Hwy 1 in wet weather. He was 35.

The “Carrie McCoid Trust Account” for the benefit of Carrie’s children, Jakob and Maryella McCoid, has been established at: Bay Federal Credit Union, 105A Post Office Drive, Aptos, CA 95003 A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 28 at 5:30pm at Twin Lakes Church. n

Making a Difference in a Time of Need!

Aptos Adopt-A-Family enters its 19th year of making the holidays a little brighter ineteen years ago, a local businessman in Aptos was diagnosed with inoperable cancer. As the cancer progressed, he was unable to work or support his family as the holidays approached.

Our community put on a huge Spaghetti feed and the money collected went to help his family. Patrice Edwards of the Aptos Times, and a friend worked tirelessly to collect toys, food, clothes, rent money and more to carry his family through the coming months. He passed away but his family is still here.

This was the birth of Adopt-a-Family.

Death, illness, a traffic accident, divorce, loss of job, anyone can become unable to manage without help. Members of our community from children to seniors, from mothers to single dads to entire families have been adopted and helped by Adopta-Family.

Over the years, there have been hundreds of stories, and thousands of gifts.

Gifts of wheelchairs, a handicap accessible van, lifts, food, clothes, toys bikes, rent, phone bills, physical therapy – gifts that helped a family to enjoy the holidays.

One year Adopt-A-Family was able to donate a $4,000 wheelchair lift to a local family. Trees, turkeys, gift certificates – whole neighborhoods have adopted families! Girl Scouts have adopted families.

Churches, parents, those who could only give one toy and those who could provide a sizable check: It’s been wonderful. We live in a very generous community.

Those of us who are blessed enough to in such a beautiful area often forget that there are many families, some of whom are our neighbors, that need help. The

Local Hero Found at Frank’s Pharmacy

ust a couple of months ago an interesting thing happened to Debra Cecelon as she proceeded to close down the pharmacy for the day. It was a Saturday, and things had been as usual for a summer

weekend until a man entered the store with a desperate request.

He and three other friends had been hiking in Nicene Marks Park when they were attacked by bees. All had been stung

and there was one woman in the group that was having a serious reaction.

“Is there anything you can give me for bee stings,” He asked Debra.

Debra told him that all she could give him was Benadryl. He said that the woman was out in the parking lot, throwing up.

When Debra went to speak with her she was found to be pale, continuing to throw up, and her lips were turning blue. Debra told the woman she needed to go to the hospital.

She said, “I can’t go to the hospital. I don’t have any insurance.”

Debra directed the man to help her into the store as she was going to call 911.

By the time she finished on the phone, two people were helping the woman into the store. Debra had her lay down to reduce the trauma to her system. Debra asked her how she felt.

She weakly replied, “It feels like my throat is closing!”

The woman’s lips were turning blue; she was growing pale and struggling for breath. Debra knew she had to do something immediately. She told her, “I’m going to give you a shot of something to help,” and the woman agreed.

Debra grabbed an EpiPen (it contains epinephrine) and gave her a dose into her outer thigh. Within moments, the bee-sting

victim was breathing better and beginning to recover.

Shortly thereafter, the ambulance arrived and the rescue team took over. The woman just kept thanking Debra over and over again. In Debra’s 21 years as a pharmacist, she’s never had such an intense moment in her career.

“The woman brought me flowers a few weeks later. She was just so thankful,” Debra shared. “I’m just glad I was here to help her.”

In a world of whirling pessimism, it is moving when one of us steps out of the brambles of fear or apathy that could hold us back. Morton Marcus Memorial Poetry Reading

American Book Award Winner Arthur Sze to Read at Annual Event

abrillo College is proud to sponsor The Third Annual Morton Marcus Memorial Poetry Reading featuring American Book Award winner and Chancellor of American Poets Arthur Sze on Saturday, November 10 at 7:00 p.m., in the Cabrillo Samper Recital Hall. The evening will also include a reading by the winner of the Morton Marcus Poetry Contest. This annual, free event is firstcome, first-served seating. Doors will open at 6:30 PM. The Annual Morton Marcus Memorial Poetry Arthur Sze Reading honors poet, teacher, and film critic Morton Marcus (1936–2009). Marcus, a cultural icon of Santa Cruz County, passed away in 2009.

Throughout his life Marcus actively brought together many of the art communities in the county. Among his pursuits was his great belief in the importance and richness of poetry to our culture. The Annual Morton Marcus Memorial Poetry Reading, co-sponsored by Poetry Santa Cruz, Ow Family Properties, Cabrillo College and UCSC, honors Marcus and his beliefs by bringing an acclaimed writer to the admission-free Memorial Reading each year.

This year’s reading will feature the extraordinary poet Arthur Sze, who is the author of eight books of poetry. Mr. Sze was the first poet laureate of Santa Fe (2006-2008) and the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing fellowships (1982, 1993).

In January of 2012, Sze was named a Chancellor to the Academy of American Poets. His poems have appeared internationally and have been translated into Albanian, Bosnian, Burmese, Chinese, Dutch, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish, Turkish and Uzbek.

He is a professor emeritus at the Institute of American Indian Arts and lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The evening, hosted by Santa Cruz’s first poet laureate Gary Young, will highlight Sze’s readings from his own work, as well as a reading by the winner of the Morton Marcus Poetry Contest sponsored by phren-Z, an online publication of Santa Cruz Writes. The winning poem and three honorable mentions will be published in the Fall 2012 issue of phren-Z, available on November 15.

The reading will conclude with a book signing and sale with Arthur Sze in the lobby.

Soquel Creek Water Opens First New Well in Over 20 Years

n October 26, Santa Cruz County will have the chance to experience Meredith Willson’s charming tale of a flim-flam man with a heart of gold.

CYT (Christian Youth Theater) Santa Cruz is producing The Music Man, a full-length musical where 51 students ages 8-18 will be telling the story of a fading Iowa town that bursts back into life when the traveling salesman, Harold Hill, sells them on instruments, band uniforms, and a dream.

Meredith Willson’s The Music Man starts CYT Santa Cruz’s third season off with a bang! The company opened in January 2011 and, over the last year, has produced five full-length musicals; Meredith Wilson’s The Music Man will be the company’s sixth show. The organization offers classes in singing, dancing, and acting

UP serves hundreds of customers on the West Coast today through the operational efficiency of more than 3,200 miles of railroad track in California.

Iowa Pacific Holdings, based in Chicago, has seven other short line railroads with operations in Oregon, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Illinois and New York State. In addition, through affiliates Iowa Pacific has railway and related operations in the United Kingdom.

Ed Ellis, president of Iowa Pacific, said “This is our first experience in northern California, and we are looking forward to working with the RTC, Union Pacific, shippers, and local communities to develop and expand both freight and passenger services provided by the Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay Railway.”

Congressman Sam Farr was instrumental in securing federal funds that were a key piece of this extraordinarily complex transaction, more than ten years in the making.

As included in the negotiated agreement approved in 2012 between the RTC and Union Pacific, the purchase includes $5.3 million in funding set aside to upgrade a number of structures on the line.

SCCRTC Completes Purchase of Local Rail Line

T

he Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) for Santa Cruz County and Union Pacific announced on October 12 that they have completed transfer of the Santa Cruz Branch Rail Line from private to public ownership for $14.2 million. Most of the funding was secured by the RTC from Proposition 116 bond funds approved by both a majority of Californians and Santa Cruz County voters in 1990.

The RTC will proceed with work on both timber and steel trestles over the next year.

Uses of the rail corridor include continued freight rail primarily for agriculture and building materials and seasonal passenger rail service in the short term. These two uses augment the county’s primary tax base thereby contributing toward vital services for residents. In the medium and longer term, a variety of transportation uses will be considered such as a bicycle and pedestrian trail adjacent to the tracks where it can be accommodated safely within the corridor and rail passenger services.

A community celebration event is scheduled for Saturday November 17. A number of festivities will take place along the rail line. More details will be posted on the RTC website as they become available. n

Cabrillo Theatre presents ‘Black Snow’

abrillo College’s Theatre Arts Department will present Keith Reddin’s brilliant comedy Black Snow, November 2 through 18, at The Cabrillo Black Box Theater.

Black Snow is a hilarious comedy about a playwright’s plight when his play falls into the hands of a legendary theatre director in a climate of government oppression. The young writer’s dream rapidly turns into a comic nightmare when the illustrious Theater of Moscow decides to make a play out of his failed novel. If you’re like most parents, this typically requires thinking ahead and spending an average of $26.52 for each costume, according to the National Retail Federation’s 2011 Halloween Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey.

The same study says seven out of 10 Americans planned to celebrate Halloween, and $1 billion was spent on children’s costumes alone. With many families continuing to feel the economic pinch, an average of 18.9 percent of consumers will make costumes instead of purchasing them this year. What to do if you’re not an

Robot Costume Needed: Gray sweat suit, one long aluminum dryer hose, two rectangular disposable foil pans, baseball cap, foil, colored markers, ribbon.

1. The foundation is a long-sleeve sweatshirt or undershirt and grey sweatpants.

2. Cut aluminum dryer hose in four parts. Place one on each leg over sweatpants for the legs. For arms, use ribbon attached to the hose with a stapler to connect the other two pieces across the child’s back. Put on like a coat, one arm at a time.

3. Attach the two disposable foil pans with ribbons close to the corners, making sure there’s enough space so it can go over the child’s head like a sandwich sign.

4. Have your child use markers to create “robot” buttons and knobs on the foil pans.

5. Wrap a baseball cap with foil and use as the robot’s hat.

••• Butterfly Costume Needed: long-sleeved T-shirt and leggings in pink or any favorite color, poster or foam board in matching color, ribbon, tissue paper in coordinating colors, assorted embellishments, such as beads, glitter pens, rhinestones, hair band, pipe cleaners, hot glue gun or other adhesive.

1. The foundation is the T-shirt and leggings.

2. Draw (find an easy stencil online or free-hand it) large wing shapes on poster or foam board and cut them out.

3. Involve your child in decorating the wings. Make sure you plan the design before you start gluing.

4. Use ribbon to tie the wings together and to create backpack-style straps to hold them on the child’s shoulders.

5. Use additional poster board to create a belt to go around your child’s waist. Cut tissue paper in triangles and staple to the belt, overlapping at the top and with pointed ends down, to create a skirt. Decorate the headband and attach the pipe cleaners.

With a little imagination and patience, you can create unique Halloween costumes with your child and have fun, too!

First Annual Oktoberfest By the Sea Tips the Ocean Almost $1,000 DAVENPORT — The Davenport Roadhouse Restaurant and Inn launched a new program to support local beaches called Tip the Ocean during an Oktoberfest celebration at the Roadhouse on September 29 and 30. Almost $1,000 was raised for three local ocean conservation non-profits: Save Our Shores, O’Neill Sea Odyssey and LiVBLUE. The funds will be used by these beneficiaries for local beach clean-ups and to bring children to the ocean who have never been before.

“With budget cuts to foundation and state funds, the Tip the Ocean partnership allows us to continue to expand our programs along the central coast. The ocean benefits, we benefit, and business benefits,” said Laura Kasa, Executive Director of Save Our Shores.

Some 500 ocean lovers attended the Roadhouse’s first annual Oktoberfest by the Sea which featured live music by five bands including the Coffis Brothers and the McCoy Tyler Band, grilled meats and side dishes, a variety of beers, and a bounce house. Over the course of the weekend, those enjoying the festivities were asked if they would like to add a few dollars to their bill to show their appreciation for the ocean and give something back.

Pacific Rim Film Festival turns 24

Free Screenings, Filmmaker Discussions Oct. 19-24, 2012

ince 1988, Pacific Rim Film Festival has brought life to its slogan, “When Strangers Meet,” by introducing our community to hundreds of feature films and documentaries from around the world. The 2012 season, which takes place October 19-24, continues that inspiring tradition.

PRFF 2012 is presented by George Ow Family Properties with support from UCSC and funded in part by a grant from the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County.

As always, all screenings are offered FREE with the exception of a benefit event the last day of the festival.

This season, twenty films will be screened at a record five locations.

The Del Mar Theatre, Rio Theatre and Watsonville Center, Cabrillo College will again be screening sites, with the addition this year of the Riverfront Stadium Twin and the Crocker Theater, Aptos campus of Cabrillo College. The final benefit event takes place Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the Rio Theatre.

The festival opens Friday, Oct. 19, at the Del Mar Theatre with a screening of Noodle, an Israeli feature film directed by Ayelet Menehaemi; in this heart-warming story, a Tel Aviv widow finds herself responsible for a precocious little Chinese boy when his mother is inexplicably deported. Second on the opening night bill is The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls, by New Zealander Leanne Pooley. This documentary about two irrepressible and irresistible activists – who also happen to be yodelers, twins and lesbians – promises to be a local favorite.

online access. You just don’t find service like this with other large pharmacies, as Darryl recently shared in a handwritten note to John, co-owner of Frank’s Pharmacy.

“I just want to say that I’ve been coming to Frank’s Pharmacy on and off for several months, and I am exceptionally pleased with the service here. I drive all the way from Santa Cruz to Aptos to Frank’s for this reason. All the staff have been super friendly and helpful, and I really enjoy the old-fashioned small-business atmosphere, where staff care about the customers and get to know them. Thanks.”

In the case of local pharmacies, larger is not better. Customers are sensitive to their medical needs and what their present health conditions demand of them. When you’re sick, standing in a long line is the last thing you want to be doing. scwd2 Desalination Program Monthly Update for October

ith the local political scene in full swing, community meetings, candidate forums, and handouts are being held and/or circulated to increase awareness, beliefs, and perspectives on the scwd2 Desalination Project.

Below are some informational items related to the project to remember and consider: 1. In March of this year, the Santa Cruz City Council passed an ordinance which formalized requiring voter approval to construct a desalination project. This ordinance was unanimously passed before the signature gathering qualified for a citizens’–generated initiative to amend the City’s Charter for vote on constructing a desalination plant.

2. Desalination is used in 120 countries worldwide to provide drinking water, including the United States and California. The pilot plant operated by scwd2 in 2008-2009 proved to meet and exceed water quality standards set forth by CA Department of Public Health.

3. The proposed desalination project would provide regional benefits to two agencies with unique water supply shortage issues. A project environmental impact report (EIR) is being prepared that will evaluate and address associated environmental impacts and alternatives. In addition, sharing the evaluation costs and potential construction costs of the proposed project means neither agency will have to solely fund the project on its own.

4. Our community is faced with severe consequences to fish habitat, our groundwater basin, and our customers’ everyday needs if a supplemental supply is not secured.

5. A supplemental supply project with the ability to provide approximately 2.5 million gallons per day is needed to meet today’s water shortage. This reflects a reduced shortage need due to our agencies’ robust and enhanced conservation programs and 15% curtailment during droughts.

6. A safe and reliable water supply is important to ensure ongoing protection of the environment and the ability of our combined community to economically thrive.

District Adopts Updated Roadmap for Water Planning through 2030 oquel Creek Water District adopted the 2012 Integrated Resources Plan (IRP) Update in September, which shall serve as a roadmap through 2030 for maintaining water supply reliability for its customers and protecting the local environment. The key components of this report (which is an update to the District’s 2006 IRP) include: Maximizing Conservation — Continue and increase conservation efforts and programs.

Groundwater Management — Reduce groundwater pumping by approximately 35% to allow the basin to naturally recover; redistribute well pumping away from the coast; and support groundwater recharge protection.

Diversifying our Water Portfolio with Regional Supplemental Supply — Reaffirmation to continue evaluating the scwd2 Regional Seawater Desalination Project with the City of Santa Cruz to provide a reliable water supply to supplement our diminished groundwater resources. In addition, potential water exchanges are being studied; however, these are not expected to contribute much to our water shortage needs.

The report contains the evaluation and findings of various water supply alternatives, such as off-stream diversion along Soquel Creek, a reservoir in the Glenwood area, a District-only desalination project and 35% mandatory water restrictions for at least 20 years to achieve basin recovery.

From a rattlesnake, iguana and piranha to swordfish, newt and moth, the diverse collection of creatures whose final moments are immortalized here is amazing.

After reading this book a few times, it might be amusing to try to create a few epitaphs yourself. How about this one? “Here lies Fluffy the cat. Her last ride was in the dryer at the Laundromat.”

His buddy, Patrick, suggests that Sponge Bob pretend to be the Flying Dutchman, but the costume doesn’t really work too well until the two make some major alterations. Still, the getup doesn’t scare anyone until the real Flying Dutchman materializes. When that happens, the real fun begins!

Longer sentences and short chapters coupled with a more challenging vocabulary make this a book for the superstar reader who is ready to tackle more demanding stories.

When the little girl tries to talk her Granny into a “normal-ish” makeover, the grey haired lady agrees, but, as you’ll discover, that isn’t a very stellar idea.

State Health Director Urges Californians to Get Flu Vaccine

SACRAMENTO — With flu season fast approaching, Dr. Ron Chapman, director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and state health officer, today urges Californians to get vaccinated against the flu.

“The flu is much more serious than the common cold and has the potential of causing serious illness and death,” said Chapman.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), influenza and related complications are the eighth leading cause of death in the United States, associated with up to 49,000 deaths and over 200,000 hospitalizations each year in the U.S. “But there is something we can do about it,” said Chapman. “Getting vaccinated now is the best way to protect ourselves and our family against the flu and its complications.”

cine for everyone six months of age and older, including pregnant women. Healthy people between two and 49 years of age, who are not pregnant, may opt for the nasal spray flu vaccine instead of a shot.

The 2012-2013 flu vaccine protects against influenza A (H1N1) virus, influenza A (H3N2) virus and influenza B virus.

This year’s flu vaccine contains two different strains that were not part of the 2011-12 flu vaccine.

To stop the spread of flu and other respiratory illnesses, Californians should also: • Stay home when sick.

• Cover a cough or sneeze by using your elbow or a tissue and properly disposing of the used tissue.

• Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, avoiding contact with your eyes, nose and mouth. n •••

The Willet is one of our most conspicuous large shorebirds. Whether in mottled brown breeding plumage or gray winter colors, these long-legged, straight-billed shorebirds feed along beaches, mudflats, and rocky shores. The Western Willet breeds in freshwater prairie marshes in western North America and winters on both coasts, from the mid-Atlantic states south to at least Brazil on the Atlantic, and from Oregon south to Peru on the Pacific.

Willets are common on most of our coastlines.

The Marbled Godwit, A large shorebird with a long, upturned bill, the Marbled Godwit is the largest of the four

species of godwit and breeds in the center of the continent and winters along the coasts. Their breeding habitat is the northern prairies of western Canada(Canadian Prairies), and the north central Great Plains, United States near marshes or ponds. They nest on the ground, usually in short grass. In autumn, they migrate in flocks to the coasts of California, the Gulf of Mexico, Mexico and South America.

‘Viennese Dreams’ — Exciting start to Symphony Season

eptember 29 and 30 were the first two repeat concerts that began the search for the Symphony’s new Music Director. I’ve been involved with the Symphony since the early 1980s and cannot recall a more exciting season.

Dr. Robert Tomaro was the first of five Conductors opting for the vacant Music Director position. The works performed were The Overture to The Merry Wives of Windsor (1847) by Carl Otto Nicolai, the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 22 in E Flat Minor, Koechel 482 (1785) and the w o n d e r f u l B r a h m s Symphony No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 68 Dr. Robert Tomaro (1876), Brahms’ first symphony over which he labored for more than twenty years; well worth the wait I might add!

SANTA CRUZ — Toyota of Santa Cruz and the Santa Cruz SPCA are hosting the 1st Annual Walk for Wags on Saturday, October 20th, a fun-filled fundraising afternoon including a scenic walk with your dog, delicious lunch, doggie costume contests, adoption booth and an array of spirited pups dressed up in their Halloween costumes.

We are inviting the public and their furry friends to enjoy a waggin’ good time as we walk to celebrate our love for animals and raise funds needed to ensure that every companion animal finds a loving home.

Complimentary catering will be provided by Gary’s Old Fashion Snappy Dogs from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Contests for most scary, cute, and humorous costumes will be held and amazing prizes donated by local businesses will be awarded to the winners. The Santa Cruz SPCA will have an informational booth and shelter volunteers will be joining the walk with adoptable dogs for all to see and pet.

The walk will begin at the Capitola Mall and go all the way to Pleasure Point where the group will turn around and head back to the Toyota Dealership in the auto plaza mall.
