As the local owners of McDonald’s restaurants, we are honored to be selected for the third year in a row as the Grand Benefactor of the 2012 Begonia Festival. Ronald McDonald loved sharing his time with the Begonia Festivalgoers during his nautical experiences the last two years, and he is looking forward to another year of leading this parade. As we built relationships with our honored customers in Capitola for over 34 years, we have participated with neighborhood organizations and schools helping to improve our community. Whether it is through our work with the Chamber of Commerce , supporting Surfin’ Santa, the Easter Egg Hunt and the Halloween Parade, or the Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County’s Human Race, and especially the families served by the Ronald McDonald House at Stanford, we value and share our community’s commitment to friendship, family, and giving back to others. Please enjoy all that the Begonia Festival has to offer. We are grateful for your

KAREN NEVIS
The painting, “Life is But a Dream” by Capitola Watercolor artist, Karen Nevis, was selected as this year’s 60th poster image, as it captures the Festival’s ‘couple’ floating in their ‘Dream Boat’ down Soquel Creek approaching Stockton Bridge and Monterey Bay. The watercolors of Karen Nevis are best loved for their vibrant color and unique quality that transcends her images. Her paintings have also been on previous Capitola Begonia Festival posters as well as the Capitola Art & Wine Festival, The Santa Cruz Half Marathon, and the annual Wharf-to-Wharf Race. Karen is a Santa Cruz County Open Studio artist and sits on the Capitola Art & Cultural Commission.

at the Crossroads Center parking lot on Bay Avenue and ride the free shuttle into the village. The shuttle runs Saturday, Sunday & Holidays. The lot is located off of the Bay Avenue exit from Highway 1. Turn right at the end of the off ramp; continue to the 4-way stop sign (Hill St.). Turn left on Hill St. and follow the shuttle signs.
Parking in the Village
There is a two hour time limit for Village parking meters. Capitola Police Department meter readers routinely chalk the tires; after two hours you must move your vehicle from the parking space or you will be ticketed. The cost is $1.50 per hour, bring quarters or use Esplanade pay stations. The parking along Cliff drive is $1.00 per hour.
Pacific Cove Parking Lot Located behind City Hall on Capitola Avenue just a short walk to the Village, the cost of meters in Pacific Cove is 50 cents an hour and there is no time limit (the meters run from 8:00 a.m. to 8 p.m.).
Parking in the neighborhoods near the Village There are four different neighborhood
permit parking programs - each with different rules, so read the signs carefully. Parking at the Pacific Cove Parking Lots is closer to the Village than any non-permit neighborhood parking.

My FavoriteAYear Retrospective
s the Capitola Begonia Festival celebrates its 60th year with the theme “My Favorite Year – A Retrospective,” it is interesting to hear the memories that volunteers, new and old, have over the years. Of course, none of us were volunteering when the Begonia Festival got its start in 1952 – although it’s a good guess several of us had been born by then! Our veteran volunteer is Lin Banks, who has graced the festival for 13 years, serving as President, Webster, Nautical Emcee, Movie Chair, and about every other role a volunteer could take on! Lin says, “They are all my favorites in their own way,” a sentiment heard from several volunteers. She began volunteering because she wanted to give back to the Village that provided a beautiful, safe place to raise her family. And she has so much fun with other members of the committee. Both Laurie Hill and Kathy Kelly (KK) have been with the festival for “10 or so years,” but who’s counting? Laurie is the VP for the Nautical Parade and you will see her with a bunch of Boy Scouts at the begonia fields every year picking blossoms to make that magical, nautical parade possible. She says, “Where else can you see a flower laden parade on a lovely small town creek?”
KK is a Past President who adds exuberance to everything she is involved with. She’s a KicK! And Eddie Ray Garcia has
8
The Official 2012 Begonia Festival Program
been with the festival longer than any of us! Eddie Ray served as a past Nautical Chair and was the Begonia Festival President for 3 terms. He has returned once again to lend an experienced hand in managing the Nautical Parade. Our Treasurer, Linda Smith, started volunteering in 2005 – “just helping some during the weekend.” Seven years later, she has been Secretary, VP of Sponsorships, PR & Fundraising and Auction Chair. She “loves to see the community coming together, the kids having fun, and the pageantry of the Nautical Parade.” Meanwhile, she has made some good friends along the way. (Check out pictures of the festival on our website, taken by her husband, Larry.) Mike Banks joined up 6 years ago because “his wife asked him to”! He and Bill Maruna, who joined in 2008, are the superheroes of the Begonia Festival. They head up the Logistics & Supplies (think Batman and Robin!) group who deliver and set up all the booths, tables, chairs, banners and bins. Events just would not function without their support! Mike fondly remembers the 2007 ‘Jungle Safari’ year when two of his dearest friends came and had a great time helping. Bill maintains that this year will be his favorite because he does not know what will happen yet. He also chairs the Music committee that selects the bands who will play for the festival.
BegoniaFestival.com
Terry Gregory is serving as committee Secretary this year, but has also been the Treasurer and Creek Marshall in the past. She recalls the year she and her husband, Paul, helped build a float. They were so exhausted after helping on Saturday, that they entirely missed the Nautical Parade on Sunday! She finds that working on the Begonia Festival Committee is a good way to meet people in the community. “Highlighting our wonderful community for others by offering a fabulous beach weekend of fun activities for all to share” is what Suzanne Murphy says about the Begonia Festival. She retired as a teacher and has been the Chair for the Chalk Art committee for the past four years. She just has so much fun working with kids! She thinks the 60th will be a kick remembering the past. 2010 was definitely Kim Hogan’s favorite year. That was when her artwork was selected for the Begonia Festival poster art. “Being selected was such an honor and having your art appreciated by so many is an experience every artist should be able to go through.” Kim has been volunteering with the Begonia Festival for 3 years now. She heads up the Merchandise committee and the Art Selection committee this year. Kim also prepares boxed lunches for Nautical Parade Judges and festival volunteers during the Nautical Parade on Sunday. YUM!

Polly Malik and Teresa Green both joined the Begonia Festival after being happily reeled in at a Community Outreach Workshop in 2010. Polly thinks that the festival is “upbeat and positive, like a small Disneyland.” This year she will Chair the Children’s Art Event and the Sand Sculpture Contest, really stepping up her volunteering. Luckily, she will have the support from Sue Dallas and Betty Mello, who have chaired Sand Sculptures for the past 6 years! Teresa’s favorite year has to be 2009. Just one week before the Begonia Festival that year, she moved to Capitola and became a member of this great community. She joined the Begonia Festival committee to meet new people in the area, and has made some good friends. This year she is the VP for Volunteer Development & Events, and chairs the Rowboat Races.
Our “Newest Kids on the Block” are Linda Wadley, Mary Beth Cahalen, and Ed Bottorff, who joined last year. Linda says the best part about the Begonia Festival is “Begonias, Begonias, Begonias! And lots of fun!” Last year she was “astounded by the magnificent beauty of the acres and acres of begonia plants bursting with color.” This year she has stepped in with both feet by volunteering to Chair the Sponsorship committee. Without our sponsors, the Begonia Festival could not produce our FREE, family fun events. Mary Beth became involved because of her experience with the dance community in the Santa Cruz area. She organized the “Let’s Dance Review” at last year’s Begonia Festival. It was such a hit that she
will bring it back again this year for our 60th! Mary Beth recalls, “It’s a great community event and people from all over enjoy it. And I remember participating in the festival as a kid.” Ed says “Don’t tell, but I love to volunteer.” And it shows! He was the organizer for the Silent Auction at the Fundraiser at Shadowbrook last year where he brought in record-setting donations. We are lucky to have him as this year’s organizer as well. His favorite year was 2010 when his float, The Woodie, won third place. WOW! How do you beat memories like these? Who knows? But bets are that the volunteers do it again with our 60th Capitola Begonia Festival! It is always SO MUCH FUN!
Adding Elegance to the Festival’s Nautical Parade
Who is that oddly dressed couple in that old boat?
H
eralding the opening of the Nautical Parade officially this year will be Bob and Judi Allen, long time and now part time residents of Capitola, rowing their specially prepared boat. Bob, Judi and their boat have been participating in every Begonia Festival Nautical Parade since 1988. Inspired by a museum photograph of a

turn-of-the-century couple rowing below the trestle as a steam engine passed over, they decided it might be fun to replicate that moment. Bob was restoring a derelict false dory originally built by Bill Grunewald at his Aeolus Boat Works at Davenport. Then they assembled costumes appropriate for the era. On the day of the event they would row along the creek, watching the finishing touches being applied to the floats. Then Bob would head upstream, tie off the boat and picnic with friends. Family friends for over 30 years, Lin Banks - Festival President, and her sons originally helped the Allen’s get their boat (dink) into the water, then picniced with them on the creek’s edge. Lin’s sons, who eventually numbered four, would take turns rowing around nearby. “My boys and I have fond memories of our annual picnic with Bob and Judi,” says Lin, “Bob and Judi helped

us fall in love with the Festival.” Bob, former Capitola Police Chief, believes that rowing on the river the of day of the Begonia Festival Parade is about as much fun as can be had in broad daylight without getting arrested! The Begonia Festival Committee would like to thank Bob and Judi for adding an elegant touch of the past to the 60th Nautical Parade!

60th Begonia Festival How We Got Here
By Carolyn Swift s autumn approaches the California coast, summer fog begins to drift offshore. Skies are clear, days warm, and evenings balmy. This is the Golden State at its best. Nowhere is a late summer sky brighter and in a more festive mood than in Capitola, a city with so much “flower power” that it was once known as the Begonia Capital of the World. Brilliant reds, vivid pinks, radiant corals, bright whites—colorful shades of the Capitola Begonia Festival are a natural favorite to chase away the “woe is me, it’s the end of summer” blues.

spreading out to the west. When a symbol was needed for an annual celebration, the choice was easy. Vetterle and Reinelt hybridizing gardens, Antonelli’s Begonia Gardens and the enduring Brown Bulb Ranch all had award-winning lath and green houses within walking distance of the beach. The flower industry took root shortly after 1900, when a diversity of bulbs and flowers had been introduced here. The vibrant Begonia, however, was easily the most celebrated. Primary grower James Brown was by 1919 a renowned producer, supplying flower seed as well as Begonias, Freesias and Gloxinias, which he imported from Europe. Brown traveled through Europe in 1920, returning with a honed expertise that helped him double his production. Thirty years later, Capitola profited more as vacationers came to see the Begonia fields as well as the sun-kissed beach. Aware of the floral backdrop around them, few Capitola residents were surprised by

The first occasion took place shortly after World War II, when Capitola-Santa Cruz Airport managers Esther and Russell Rice began promoting Capitola as the Waikiki

of the West. Esther, a longtime friend and classmate of the Browns, went to their fields and chose giant blossoms to give away to visiting aviators. Decades afterward, she kept a stack of letters and photographs sent by the pilots once they returned home and showed off their impressive prize to family and friends. Peggy Slatter Matthews added water to the mix in 1950. A professional swimmer who had performed in the late Thirties with the Billy Rose Aquacade in San Francisco, she came to Capitola and soon organized its first autumn water carnival, choosing Begonias to decorate the barges used by swimmers in her Capitola Water Fantasy production. Considered now to be the start of the modern festival, the 1952 water fantasy show introduced live background music to complement the Olympic swimmers as they performed water ballets. Twelve Begonia-trimmed floats were judged in a water parade, followed by a “fantasy dance” at the Capitola Ballroom. Capitola Begonia Festival was organized with an official title two years later. Over coffee, Helen Antonelli and Vivian Benias designed a pageant to showcase the Begonia blossom by itself. Spotlighted in the 1954 festival were six floats using 35,000 blossoms picked from local fields. As the fall of 2012 draws nearer, Begonia Festival organizers ready preparations for a weekend that looks back toward “My Favorite Year.” It is intended to give everyone—newcomer and old hand—the opportunity to review sixty festivals and choose in a personal way the themes that have been so delightful that they stand to receive another bow.

Begonia Festival Beginnings History of the Festival
T
he Capitola Begonia Festival is a valuable and unique expression of this gem of a beach community on the Central Coast. Starting 55 years ago, Capitola took advantage of its cool coastal climate that is so hospitable to the tuberous begonia. Tuberous begonias are popular for their beautiful flowers, which come in a variety of colors and forms. Red, orange, yellow, white, salmon and pink blooms that may be single or double; they may be plain, ruffled or toothed and their petals

may have margins, crests or blotches of contrasting color. The Begonia Festival originated in the 1950’s when begonia growers located in Capitola and Santa Cruz used a celebration of these gorgeous flowers as a way to extend the summer tourist season into September. The begonia family, prized for its beauty, is native to tropical South America and southern Africa and has hundreds of varieties scattered throughout the world. The Brown family hybridized the local ‘Pacific Begonia’ in Capitola at the turn of the 20th Century. They wanted to develop sustainable agriculture in the sparsely populated, primarily tourist area then called ‘Camp Capitola’. Acquiring begonia bulbs from Germany, who boasted of ‘the best flowers’, and begonia tubers from Belgium, who claimed ‘the strongest tubers’, the Browns crossbred the two varieties, and developed the Pacific Begonia. From the 1930’s to the 1970’s, approx 90 percent of the world’s commercial begonias came from the Brown Bulb Ranch in Capitola. Peggy Matthews, a local resident who taught swimming, staged the Capitola Water Follies every fall, to showcase her swimmers. Peggy noticed all the begonia flowers that seemingly went to waste at the Brown Bulb Ranch, now home to the Capitola Mall. The growers however, had no interest in shipping the flowers; they were busily propagating bulbs. Falling flowers signified that it was time to dig up the bulbs and ship them to market. In 1951, Peggy was given permission to pick as many flowers as she wanted. So that year the Capitola Water Follies featured paddleboards colorfully decorated with begonias. That’s how the Begonia Festival got its start. The next year, 1952, was the first year featuring begonia-covered ‘floats’. Though the official “Capitola Begonia Festival” wasn’t until 1954, 1952 is recognized as the starting year. The begonia fields have since moved to Marina, in Monterey County. The Golden
BegoniaFestival.com
State Bulb Growers Association maintains 43 acres dedicated to Begonias that in late summer have over 3 million blooms - a spectacular sight! In addition to this spectacular parade on Soquel Creek of beautiful floats covered with begonia blossoms, there are lots of activities for the whole family. Following the parade is the concert in Capitola’s new bandstand. There is the fishing derby on the Capitola Wharf, an amazing sand sculpture contest that gets more competitive every year with entries from all over, and then there is the infamous Labor Day row boat race held on Soquel Creek. For those interested in showing their skill (or luck) there is the annual horseshoe tournament. The more events you attend or sign up for, the more fun, laughs, and memorable experiences you will have. Enjoy this special weekend event with your family and friends, and remember, begonias bloom and wilt with time, but the memories, photos, and stories you have from creating a masterpiece in the sand, or getting drenched with your kids in a row boat, or helping build one of those beautiful floats will last always.

My favorite year is any year that we can enjoy the warmth and wonderful hospitality of Capitola. The Begonia Festival embodies the spirit of Capitola. From the float construction, to sand sculpture, artists events, and concerts—this festival is perfect in every way. It offers lots of opportunities to share in Capitola’s beauty and history.
