hile trends come and go, there is one style that remains a favorite year after year: the iconic look of the American West. The Wild West style is defined by its wide-open spaces, rustic charm, and bold use of color. Western-style decoration usually uses wood, rock, leather, and metal in abundance. Any of the natural materials will bring you a step closer to this style. Strive for a look that is cohesive and balanced, not busy or cluttered. Something old and antique is always in the Western home decor. It can be anything from an old saddle, cowboy boots, or an antique piece of furniture. Western color schemes are inspired by Native American rugs, which may use gray, black, creamy, and turquoise as well as strong reds, blue shades, and earth tones. Take a look above for some ideas. 10

Infuse Living Spaces with Color From experiences to surroundings, the past year has brought a renewed focus on feeding the soul. In an era of overstimulation and information overload, many are finding a new appreciation for living life minimally but with maximum experiences. That mentality is increasingly evident in all aspects of life, especially with home design and decor. After all, spending more time at home means more time to discover what truly evokes happiness.

At the same time, as the focus on physical and mental wellness heightens, design experts see those trends reflected in a more considered approach to design inspired by color therapy, which makes it possible to create beautiful spaces filled with healing color. With an expertly coordinated color palette, like the Color Collections from Sherwin-Williams, colors work in perfect harmony in any combination. Thoughtful use of color is among the most effective design tools for reveal-worthy style in your home. Appliances In the past, appliances were meant to blend into the decor to be less obvious, albeit essential, elements of a kitchen. A more contemporary approach: vibrant appliances that get noticed. You can find major appliances in a wide range of colors, but if you’re not sure about going that big and bold, many smaller countertop appliances, such as stand mixers and toasters, come in a range of colorful options, too. Architecture When contemplating where and how to apply color to a space, avoid boxing in your options. Think beyond traditional wall space when planning ways to change the color in a space; be thoughtful with color and highlight architectural details to elevate the interest and charm in your home. To infuse more color and boldness into your space, consider a timeless and elegant shade of red, by Sherwin-Williams’ 2021 Color of the Year. This paint color, “Passionate,” is a deeply 14

fall-winter 2021-22

saturated hue that is daringly rich and invigorates the senses. This bold and empowering red is steeped in history, merging modern design with traditional charm. Furniture Whether you’re into project pieces you can transform into something new or simply shopping for furnishings that complement your space, be sure to consider how the furniture fits into the overall color scheme. Selecting furniture that fits with the design brings a more cohesive and stylized feel to the room. For example, a desk and bookshelves in pale natural hues can lend warmth to an office with walls painted a cool dynamic blue. Cabinets Painted cabinets are on-trend, and if you’re bored with basic whites and grays, you’re not alone. Designers are going bold in the kitchen and using cabinetry as a showpiece. These color palettes create inspiring spaces that invite you to get busy baking or simply pull up a chair and linger over a cup of coffee. If you’re concerned about how to bring a color palette together, consider using a collection that has been intentionally curated to mix and match shades for a perfect look no matter which hues you choose. With earthy tones inspired by nature and a dose of vibrancy, the shades are simultaneously energizing and calming. The palette makes it easy to introduce statement colors in unexpected ways so you can feel confident in your selections. Modern Kitchen and Bath Upgrades Upgrades happen for all kinds of reasons, but one of the most common purposes of a home renovation is to make essential spaces like kitchens and bathrooms more modern. Modernizing your spaces isn’t just about the aesthetic, although that is a major advantage, especially when it comes to resale value. Updating your kitchen and bath is also an opportunity to introduce new technology and enhancements that improve the function of these hightraffic rooms.

16

Modern styles simplify everyday living and can make contemporary entertaining more enjoyable. The sleek lines of modern design lend themselves to a clean look, which is supported by hidden features that make organization easier. Smart Technology Although the idea of a connected home isn’t new, technology is steadily improving. This means smart features are now often more affordable, easily integrated into the rest of your home and available to help manage a wider range of household items. In the kitchen, you can add smart technology in numerous ways, from appliances and climate control to lighting and window treatments. For example, touch-to-open and push-toopen doors and drawers create a sleek, modern design while opening and closing with either a push or touch of a button for convenience. Similar diversity is available in the bathroom, where you can incorporate connected health and fitness monitors, touchless toilets, mirrors that double as information centers, towel warmers and even showers that automatically adjust to your preferred temperature. Paint Changing the colors in a space is one of the most effective ways to transform the decor, but the walls aren’t the only place where paint can make a big impact, especially in rooms like the kitchen or bathroom, where the cabinetry can make a bold statement. Black is a hallmark of modern design and installing cabinetry with a black finish can instantly upgrade a room. To create visual interest, consider incorporating accent cabinets in a coordinating finish. For example, you could pair wall cabinets finished in Matte Ebony with upper center cabinets finished in Putty Oak. An island in Bel-Air can incorporate both dark and light tones for a cohesive look. Decorative Range Hoods An exposed range hood is a trendy look that can add sophistication to your kitchen. Treating this functional element as a statement piece gives you another place to showcase your style and create a sleek and modern look. If your hood is covered, consider making the cabinet door a focal point with a material such as back-painted glass. Multi-Purpose Sinks While your sink has some obvious functions, you can upgrade the space for even more practical use. Some of the latest sink design innovations include built-in features such as cutting boards, colanders, bowls, drying racks and compost areas. In addition, motion activated wastebaskets with separate compost or recycling containers provide hands-free access to reduce unwanted messes.

18

fall-winter 2021-22

Touchless Faucets Public restrooms aren’t the only places you can benefit from a touchless faucet. At home, the feature may come in handy when your hands are full or filthy. An automatic water flow is convenient and can help keep germs and grime under control. For the most on-trend, modern look, coordinate your faucets with other bathroom elements finished in gold hues, such as a laminate veneer vanity in a highgloss gold finish. Cabinetry Collectively, cabinets are the biggest component of most kitchens. Since kitchens tend to be the hub of the home, it’s important to maintain a homey feel while adding the luxury of modern features. Using warm colors, gold-toned hardware and sleek door styles can deliver a glamorous yet welcoming design. Free-Standing Tubs A luxurious soaking tub is a top demand for many homeowners, and trends are moving toward freestanding options that create a focal point in an oasis-like bathroom. You may be envisioning an oldfashioned claw-foot style, but there are numerous modern takes on the traditional version that can fit seamlessly into your modern design scheme. Wood-Look Flooring Natural wood floors were once the gold standard, but thanks to improvements in the quality and appearance of laminate and vinyl products, you can find alternative flooring in even high-end homes. Laminate and vinyl planks give the same look as wood (or stone, if you prefer) to complement a modern aesthetic, usually at a lower price point and with greater durability over time. Creating A Vibrant Backyard Oasis Fall is in full swing , but are you truly making the most of it? Creating a vibrant outdoor space can expand the living area of your home, while providing a unique venue for entertaining or relaxation, allowing you to enjoy every free moment to the fullest.

From the ultimate sports bar to a Zen paradise, the outdoor design possibilities are endless and can be customized to meet your priorities, be it entertaining friends and family, or creating the perfect tranquil retreat. Research shows the most-loved areas of the home combine relaxation, socialization, and functionality. Outdoor spaces provide a great opportunity to accommodate all three, yet most homeowners still vastly underutilize them. The following are five top tips for creating the outdoor oasis of your dreams: 1 A dd an outdoor kitchen - Outdoors kitchens are growing in popularity, and for good reason. Not only do they meet a basic need, but also they do so in a fun, engaging atmosphere. No one wants to be stuck inside preparing a meal when the party is out under the sun—or stars. The showpiece of every great outdoor kitchen is a quality, professional grill, which can be freestanding, or built-in to save on space. There are many styles of barbecues out there. Shop and around and you find one to fit your needs. Other culinary considerations include outdoor refrigerators or beer dispensers to keep beverages cold and flowing freely, pizza ovens, and sinks for easy cleanup. 2 E stablish a gathering place - One of the most important features of an outdoor space are areas for socialization. central location with a variety of seating options creates a welcoming atmosphere. Adding the element of fire to a space sparks emotion, provides a focal point, and enables the space to be used later into the season. Consider a builtin fireplace or a fire pit that can be moved to different locations depending on your needs. 3 C reate privacy, divided zones - Escape the hustle and bustle while making your space feel more intimate with the use of barriers like large plants or trees, a pergola, or privacy panels. Designing distinct spaces with divided zones helps create the feel of a secluded getaway and gives each area purpose. 4. D esign for all the senses - Our favorite spaces are those that delight all the senses. In addition to designing a comfortable, beautiful space, consider adding outdoor speakers for music that sets the mood, or a recycled water feature that eliminates street noise. Relax and enjoy the delicious smell of grilling or the experience of roasting

marshmallows over an open flame. Consider adding fragrant bushes to fill the night with a sweet scent. Get creative. 5 A dd accents - Small touches can go a long way. Personalize your space with items that define your style and personality or focus on a fun theme. Don’t be afraid to add bold pops of color - your outdoor living area is a great place to explore a more adventurous design than you might consider inside your home.

WATERSMART Gardening Website Highlights Native and Low Water Use Plants Helping our customers with water conservation is an essential part of what we do at the Soquel Creek Water District. A lot of water savings can be achieved through changes inside our homes, but a significant amount of residential water consumption is related to outdoor water use. Big landscaping changes, however, can be both time consuming and expensive, so we are constantly working to provide our customers with rebates, information, and technical assistance that will help them make the transition to more water efficient landscaping. Did you know that there is incredibly useful and inspirational website for choosing “water-smart” plants and getting inspired to garden with water in mind? The “Water-Smart Gardening in Santa Cruz County” website, located at www.santacruz.watersavingplants.com, was customized in partnership with the Master Gardeners of Monterey Bay and the Water Conservation Coalition of Santa Cruz County (of which Soquel Creek Water District is a member). This tool is custom-built to provide information about plants, watering and resources for the Santa Cruz County environment. This mobile friendly website has several key features: 1 Plant keyword search: You can type ‘salvia’ in the search box in the top menu and get a listing of all the salvias on the site. 2 Helpful Plant Lists: There are 30 popular plants lists including deer tolerant plants, lawn substitutes, California natives, low water perennials, and erosion control. 3 Guided Search: The guided search asks a series of questions about your desired plant to focus your list. The questions include plant type, height, color, bloom season, sun exposure, and soil type. At the end of the questions you will be provided with a focused photo list of plants that meet your garden’s needs. Clicking on each photo reveals the plant’s details. Plants that are California Natives are denoted with a California poppy icon over the photo. 24

What Came First, The Tomato or The Seed? Planting Your Next Garden With Seeds. Saving seeds from one year to plant the next is an age-old tradition, some families even pass down seeds by generation. Saving vegetable seeds can help preserve the particular variety you are growing ( for example if you are growing an heirloom variety). To save seed is to participate in the process of natural selection. If you save seed only from the biggest tomato of the bunch and replant them year after year, you’ll eventually end up with seeds that produce plants on which all the tomatoes are bigger. The same holds true for almost any other trait. Want tomatoes that ripen earlier? Save seed from the first fruits to ripen each year. Want disease resistant plants? Then definitely don’t save seed from those that are disease-infested. You don’t need to get too scientific about it, but as a rule of thumb, only save seed from your healthiest, most robust, tastiest plants. Saving seed involves three steps: selecting seeds from the most suitable plants, harvesting them at the right time, and storing them properly until you need to sow them.

26

fall-winter 2021-22

HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP YOU GET STARTED:

Tomato seeds: Allow the fruits to fully ripen on the plant and scoop out the seeds and pulp. Place in a jar of water and leave for a few days, swirling them in the water daily. After a few days, the seeds should have come free from the pulp and sunk to the bottom. Pour the liquid away and rinse the seeds. Leave them to dry on a paper towel. Pepper seeds: Harvest seeds from peppers after the fruit has fully ripened on the plant and started to wrinkle. Remove the seeds from the peppers and spread them out on paper towels to dry. Peas and Beans: Allow the pods to ripen on the plant until they are dry and start to turn brown. Remove the pods from the plant and spread them out on a tray indoors, to dry. Leave them for at least two weeks before shelling the pods or wait until you are ready to sow the seeds the following spring Pumpkin Seeds: Remove the pulp and seeds from inside the pumpkin. Place this in a colander. Place the colander under running water. As the water runs over the pulp, start picking out the seeds from the pulp. Rinse them in the running water as you do. Do not let the pumpkin pulp sit in non-running water. There will be more seeds inside the pumpkin than you will ever be able to plant, so take the ones you don’t want to save and roast them in the oven with a little salt. A great snack! Dried seed should be placed in paper envelopes or seed packets labeled with the name of the variety and the date it was harvested. To ensure longevity, keep the seed packets in a glass or plastic container in a cool dark place. Any seed stored this way should remain viable for at least a few years, though some crops may keep for a decade or more. Time to plant! Germinating your seeds is an easy process and can be done using items from your household. For instance, instead of buying premade pots for germinating use a toilet paper roll. Cut it in half, make four cuts on the bottom and fold up like you would close a box. Fill it with potting soil, pack it down and add your seeds. Place your homemade pots in a watertight container and completely soak the paper roll. Keep it wet the whole time you are growing. Place your container in a clear plastic bag and seal it. You are creating a small greenhouse, trapping the moisture until the seeds sprout. Once your seeds reach the top, take off the plastic bag. They will need air circulation, otherwise, the toilet paper seed pots may mold. Once the seeds have sprouted and are hardened off, these toilet paper seed pots can be placed directly into the ground and will compost away. They are especially good for planting any kind of seed that does not like to have its roots disturbed. You can also start your seedlings directly into egg cartons. Add the soil and the seeds. Keep them moist and tear apart the Continued on the next page.

individual sections. Of course, these can be planted directly in the ground. You can make some fantastic biodegradable seed starter pots out of empty citrus peels, which you would have discarded anyways. Just cut a lemon, lime, or orange in half crosswise, hollow it out, drill a hole in the bottom to give extra water a way out, and fill the citrus halves with soil. If you want to germinate your seeds outside, there are many ways to do that. Some household items are perfect for creating your own mini greenhouse. Start your seeds in a recycled (make sure it is transparent) milk jug. Simply cut the top off, fill with soil, add your seeds and some water in the bottom, and replace the top. The jug will keep humidity in while allowing plenty of indirect light to grace your little seedlings. Upcycle a rotisserie chicken container into a mini greenhouse by poking drainage holes in the bottom and air holes in the top and filling with soil. Plant and water seeds and place the top back on. Now just sit back, and soon you’ll be enjoying the fruits of your labor! You can really go all the way and build a full-size greenhouse in your backyard! Greenhouses made of plastic bottles are easy to make, very cheap, and definitely a great solution to having fresh produce from your own garden all year round. The plastic bottle greenhouse has many benefits besides minimal costs. It is selfwatering, as rainwater can penetrate through the gaps between the bottles, it raises the temperature by 10 degrees C, it gives you the opportunity to recycle bottles and keep them away from landfills in a very smart way, and it is super cheap to repair if ever needed. Did you impulsively buy a load of old windows at the thrift store, but now have no idea what to do with them? They are perfect for a greenhouse! A greenhouse built with old windows is remarkably economical and is a great way to repurpose items. You can even furnish it with used or recycled benches, shelves, doors, old planting containers, and other materials scavenged from throw away piles. There are plenty of places to scavenge old windows and such, check your local listings. A hoop house might be the simplest type of DIY greenhouse out there. A hoop house is little more than polyethylene or plastic sheeting stretched over bent plastic or PVC tubes. Depending on how handy you are or how many plants you’re growing, you can make your hoop house as simple or as complex as you’d like. For example, the simplest option is to stretch PVC pipes across a raised bed, secure the pipes into place on each side, then drape a sheet of plastic over the top. The plastic provides a layer of protection against freezing temperatures. Because it is translucent, light is still able to seep in. Continued on the next page. 28

If you are handy with a hammer and nails, you might try putting together your own lean-to greenhouse. A lean-to greenhouse only has three sides. The fourth side of the structure is the wall of another building, such as your home or a garden shed. There are a few benefits to making a lean-to greenhouse structure. One big advantage of the design is that there’s less for you to build since one wall already exists. Another advantage of the design is that the wall of your home or shed provides an extra layer of insulation to keep your greenhouse warm, without needing to crank up the heat. Heat from the house or shed wall can radiate into the greenhouse at night, keeping the temperature well above freezing. 30

Look at What’s in Season in Your Local Market or Garden! ARTICHOKES Artichokes are fun to grow, and you can plant them in late fall. You can buy the starter plants at your local nursery. They grow quite tall so make sure when you plant your artichoke it has plenty of room surrounding it. When the artichokes have stopped appearing and the plant starts dying off, cut it back and it will come back next season!

BEETS The wonderful thing about beets is that although it is an annual, it can be planted year-round on the Central Coast and, with staggered planting, you can enjoy a continuous supply of both the delicious green tops and bulbous roots. It is delicious in salads, roasted, in sandwiches and, if you are energetic, pickled!

GARLIC Garlic is easy to grow and produces numerous bulbs after a long growing season. It is frost tolerant. Beyond its intense flavor and culinary uses, “the stinking rose” is good in the garden as an insect repellent and has been used for centuries as a home remedy.

KALE For a fall harvest, young kale plants can be set out 6 to 8 weeks before the first fall frost. Kale is delicious in salads, quiches, and soups! To make kale chips remove the ribs and toss in olive oil or lightly spray and sprinkle with a combination of cumin, curry powder, chili powder, roasted red pepper flakes or garlic powder. Bake at 275°F for 15–30 minutes to desired crispness.

KOHLRABI Plant Kohlrabi seeds outside after danger of a hard frost: sow in midsummer for a fall crop, or in fall for a winter crop. Before cooking, trim and peel it very thoroughly (the skin is quite tough and indigestible). Slice, julienne or grate it into your salad or slaw for a great crunch and a fresh but slightly spicy flavor. It also can be cooked — boiled, steamed, sauteed, roasted or fried.

32

fall-winter 2021-22

LEEKS Sow leek seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date. It should take about 5-7 days to germinate. Seedlings can be transplanted outside as soon as the risk of hard frost has passed. When transplanting leeks into your garden, space them 6 inches apart. Leeks can be used in many recipes that call for onions. Use leeks in soups, stews, and other simmered dishes.

ONIONS Onions are a good choice for late summer and early fall planting. The size of an onion depends a lot on how much sunlight it gets. Green onions that don’t need to develop bulbs are a good pick to plant all year long as long as the temperatures don’t reach freezing.

POTATOES Potatoes love cool weather. They can tolerate temperatures upwards of 80 degrees but won’t produce as many tubers in hot weather. Plant them as a winter crop and you will reap the rewards. Dig a trench at least six inches deep and toss in a few potatoes, about six to eight inches apart.

SQUASH The time to plant winter squash is after the last frost is over. Just plant seeds directly into the ground and they will grow until the ground warms up. Getting the seeds into the ground first thing after the last frost is imperative since it takes so long for them to ripen. A few of the most common and delicious are Butternut, Acorn, and Spaghetti.

SWISS CHARD To enjoy a fall harvest of Swiss Chard it should be planted about 40 days before the first fall frost date. Chard can be used in salads to add color, in smoothies, in soups and stews, on pizzas, in sandwiches in place of lettuce, and quiches. If you are not a fan of Kale, use spinach instead!

BAKED ARTICHOKE 1 artichoke ½ lemon 2 tablespoons olive oil Salt and pepper to taste 1 tablespoon garlic, minced 2 tablespoons fresh parsley ½ cup parmesan cheese

Remove the stem of the artichoke. Cut about 1 inch off the top of the artichoke. Take a pair of kitchen scissors and snip off the thorns on the tip of the artichoke petals. Use half a lemon and rub lemon juice over the cut portion of the artichoke to prevent it from browning. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Spread open the petals and rub minced garlic all over. Add the parsley and Parmesan; make sure to get it in between the petals. Top with more pepper if desired. Wrap the artichoke in aluminum foil. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 1 hour and 20 minutes. fall-winter 2021-22

fall-winter 2021-22

A thick and hearty soup with delicious winter vegetables. Serve with a crusty loaf of bread for a delicious winter dinner. Serves 6 Heat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. In a large bowl, toss the butternut squash, parsnips, sweet potatoes, carrots, and fennel with 2 tablespoons olive oil and 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt. Spread in a single layer on a large baking sheet and roast until tender and browned in places, about 40 minutes, turning a couple of times while roasting. While the veggies are roasting, prepare the base of the soup. To a large saucepan over low heat, add 3 tablespoons olive oil. Add the onion along with a pinch of salt and a bit of pepper, then cook, stirring occasionally, until soft, about 10 minutes. Stir in the flour and cook for 3 minutes, stirring constantly. Stir in the vegetable broth. Add the potatoes and thyme. Bring to a boil over medium heat then reduce heat to low. Simmer uncovered for 15 minutes or until potatoes are soft. Remove from heat. Pick out the thyme stems and discard. Stir in the roasted vegetables. Carefully transfer about 3 cups of the chowder to the pitcher of a blender or a bowl if you have an immersion blender. Puree until smooth. Return the pureed mixture to the pot and stir to combine. This will make the soup thick and creamy. Stir in the milk. Place the pot back on the burner, and, with the heat on medium-low, return to a simmer, stirring often to prevent burning. Taste and add additional salt and pepper if desired.

Top Chefs Find Inspiration Close To Home

Celebrated chefs Wolfgang Puck, Nancy Silverton, Gerald Hirigoyen and Martin Yan are known and active the world over, but they all call California home. For their awardwinning restaurants, product lines, cookbooks and TV shows, they draw inspiration from the bountiful fresh ingredients the Golden State has to offer. “California is my favorite place in the world to cook,” said Puck. “The climate is such that we can get the best ingredients - the freshest produce, fish, nuts - with so much flavor.” It’s this same culinary opportunity that drew French-born Hirigoyen, the chef and owner of Piperade in San Francisco, to California. “The food revolution - knowing where food comes from, how nutritious it is, and supporting the people who grow it - was happening in California, so I came to progress, and with all we have available, continue to progress.” One California crop that has captured these chefs’ collective imagination of late? Pistachios. “I find their flavor and crunch irresistible and I love the color,” said L.A.-based chef Silverton. “It’s really easy to add pistachios to almost anything you make. Their flavor enhances other ingredients so well, but they can also be the star of a dish.” 36

fall-winter 2021-22

“The great thing about pistachios is they are just the right size, and they add flavor, color and texture to your dish, on top of all the nutritional benefits,” said Yan. Long a popular snack, the trend of using pistachios for cooking appears to be spreading beyond California. American Pistachio Growers, the trade organization of pistachio farmers in the western United States, reports the sale of pistachio kernels, or unshelled nuts, domestically has risen 14%, and represents 22% of all pistachio sales. Representatives cite the reason as a combination of the increase in people preparing meals at home since the outbreak of COVID-19, and the desire for healthy ingredients. Pistachios are nutrient-dense and high in protein. Earlier this year, pistachios earned the status of being a “complete protein,” making them popular among people following a plant-based diet. In July, a university study underscored the importance of pistachios as part of weight-loss programs. With the world’s top chefs adding more pistachio-inspired dishes to their menus, the little green nut is suddenly red hot. But don’t worry about there being a shortage. This year’s American pistachio harvest yielded a record-setting one billion pounds. (BPT)

Plan a Coastal Road Trip Excursion If you’ve never traveled along the Pacific Coast, or maybe you’d just like to experience it from a new perspective, there are few things quite like a road trip to take in the sights and experiences that make the journey one to remember. 38

A road trip lets you set your own pace and enjoy the companionship of friends or family. When you’re ready to explore, outdoor adventures, historical experiences and 99 miles of coastline await in Monterey County, California, which is known as a scenic, beautiful expanse along the Pacific Coast. From wide-open beaches, verdant vineyards and fields to the peaks of the Santa Lucia Mountains, there’s plenty of room to roam. Scenic Beauty Some of the top scenic drives in the world are along California’s coast, where you’ll find a wide range of local topography. One example is Highway 1, where starting toward the north, you’ll see the state’s second largest wetlands, artichoke fields and rolling sand dunes, as well as cypress forests and the craggy Continued on the next page.

coastline. Further south, you’ll encounter towering cliffs, redwoods and awe-inspiring bridges. Other notable sights include fishing ports; beaches; wildlife including seals, sea lions and sea otters; the famed Lone Cypress; mansions; and several championship golf courses. Outdoor Adventure When you’re ready for some action, there’s plenty to find along the coast. From a captivating 18-mile-long recreation trail with coastline views to kayaking, paddle boarding, surfing, whalewatching excursions and more, there are numerous ways to

whet an appetite for adventure near the ocean. Inland, you’ll find options like hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, cave exploring and horseback riding. Wine Country Along the California coast, you can find tens of thousands of acres of vineyards producing more than 53 different varietals of wine. In Monterey County alone, you can take your pick among 65 tasting rooms set against picturesque backdrops. How you choose to experience wine country is as diverse as the varietals you’ll discover. For example, you might head to the beach with a newly purchased bottle of your favorite wine, jump aboard a wine trolley to let someone else do the driving for a while or schedule a tour that takes you behind the scenes with a winemaker. Beach Time No visit to the coast is complete without a visit to the beach, but not all beaches are the same. From white sandy beaches to rocky cliffs, you could plan an entire road trip around the different kinds of beaches waiting for you to discover their beauty. Enjoy bird spotting, rock collecting, surfing, tide pooling and more. Some of the area’s greatest treasures are the lesser-known beaches, including one that sits in the middle of Cannery Row. The sheltered cove of McAbee Beach was used by Portuguese whalers in the 1850s and Chinese fishermen in the early 1900s. Today, this secret beach is a perfect spot to let kids burn off

energy before or after a trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Visitors can spot seals and otters playing offshore, and it’s a popular launching point for scuba divers exploring the kelp forests. Wellness for Body and Mind When you’ve taken in the sights and explored to your heart’s content, be sure to leave time for rejuvenation. From spas and meditation retreats to spending time in nature, it’s easy to make wellness a priority when visiting the California coast. You can even enjoy food that’s as good for you as it is delicious with a growing focus on sustainability by visiting daily farmers’ markets and fish markets, which provide a bounty of locally sourced produce, fresh meat, seafood and hand-made treasures for a truly enriching cultural experience.
