YOUR 2021 GARDEN Home gardening offers plentiful benefits that support mental and physical health, and many people have decided to begin or expand their gardens during the pandemic. Whether you’re a new gardener looking to learn or a seasoned green thumb who has been growing plants for years, you want inspiration for the upcoming growing season.

Following expert-recommended top trends can help set you up for success and make your garden the envy of the neighborhood. The 2021 Burpee Garden Cast forecast, found at www.burpee.com/GardenCast, is an inspirational resource based on industry trends and cultural insights, combining expertise from Burpee horticulturalists, registered dietitian Marisa Moore and HGTV star and lifestyle expert Kelly Edwards.

THE GARDEN CAST TRENDS FOR 2021 INCLUDE: IMMUNITY GARDEN Health is top of mind for people across the country. An abundant garden full of vibrant vegetables like winter squash, radishes and tomatoes can help you commit to a nutrient-rich diet that strengthens your immune system. A vegetable’s color reflects the different phytonutrients and antioxidants inside, according to the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism. Growing a rainbow of vegetables allows you to create multi-hued meals with health and disease-fighting benefits. “Planting an Immunity Garden right in your own backyard will do a world of good,” says Moore. “It offers unlimited access to nutrient-dense vegetables that help support your overall health and well-being. Tomatoes are a great example: they are rich in vitamin C, which plays a vital role in a healthy immune system.” GARDEN OF JOY Gardening helps you reduce stress, move your body and enjoy the outdoors. The psychological benefits of caring for plants 8

can support the mental health of people at any age. That’s why individuals as well as families are planting gardens of joy, with blooms that are as pleasant as the process of gardening itself. The garden of joy is a flower bed full of bright “faces”, including pansies and violas, that are sure to inspire many smiles of pure happiness. Every time you tend to these happy blooms you will feel a little lift in your day, plus it brightens your outdoor landscape in a cheerful way. WORLD HERB GARDEN Experiencing international flavors in food is an important part of traveling and with so many people pausing vacation plans, the associated explorational eating has paused as well. Your palate is ready for something new and you can experience a world of flavors from your own backyard when you grow a world herb garden - no passport needed. Herbs like lemongrass, dill and cilantro are easy to grow and offer bright flavors to enhance your favorite recipes, no matter the cuisine. Whether you use them fresh, dry or in custom blends, you’ll have a bounty of flavor at your fingertips to complement meats, vegetables, pasta and more. “We want to inspire all gardeners in 2021, which is why we launched the Garden Cast,” says Burpee Owner George Ball. “Through these trends, we’re providing inspiration and creative ideas paired with techniques and product tips to give gardeners of all levels the tools they need to grow with confidence this season.” BPT

HOW TO COMBAT SOCIAL ISOLATION Even before COVID-19 limited social contact with friends, family and colleagues, many adults experienced loneliness and depression due to limited contact with others. Now, a year after the pandemic forced many people into even greater levels of isolation, the issue of social isolation is especially prevalent in Americans over the age of 50. Despite the physical implications of a global pandemic, research shows the mental health stakes are high, too. A nationwide survey, commissioned by Barclays, found that half of Americans over the age of 50 said the isolation from their friends and family has been more challenging than concerns over health risks they may face. Social isolation has provided plenty of time for Americans to reflect on their priorities. The majority of Americans surveyed (90%) have reevaluated their post age-50 goals and put spending more time with family at the top of their lists. “While restrictions are beginning to ease, many older adults are still isolated from friends and family, and that takes a toll on their mental well-being” said Lisa Marsh Ryerson, president of the AARP Foundation. “We must do all we can to help older adults, who have suffered greatly during COVID-19, strengthen the social connections that are so essential to their ability to lead longer, healthier lives.” Use technology to connect with loved ones. Video chats and traditional phone calls can help you feel connected even when you can’t be together in person. If you schedule calls throughout the week, you’ll have something regular to look forward to and can benefit from a checkin that affirms everyone is healthy and safe. Make time for physical activity. Staying closer to home may mean you’re not getting the exercise you once did, but it’s important for your health to stay active. Regularly using your muscles helps keep your body strong, and even light physical activity a few times each week can help keep your cardiovascular system fit for better heart health. Regular exercise can also provide a range of positive mental health outcomes, including reduced stress, anxiety and depression, and improved memory. Volunteer in your community or consider virtual volunteering. Helping others is a way to release feel-good endorphins for yourself. While your limited social calendar may afford you some extra time, inquire with local nonprofits about how you can contribute to their causes. Especially as funding for charitable organizations has dropped, volunteers are still essential to most nonprofit organizations, whether the help comes in person or virtually. Learn a new hobby or skill. Another way to fill your free time, and reap some positive energy, is to explore a new hobby or skill. The personal satisfaction of learning and focusing your mental energy on something that interests you can help offset the disappointment of being away from those you love. 8 Tips For Mental Wellness

Here are some tips that can help everyone improve their mental wellness: 1. Develop a positive attitude — people with positive attitudes are happier, more successful, and better able to handle crises and stress. And in concert with a positive attitude, get an attitude of gratitude for what you have instead of dwelling on what you don’t. 2. Avoid negative self-talk — Learn to be thankful for the good rather than focusing on the negative issues. 3. View a crisis situation as an opportunity — creative problem-solving can expand your options. Try to make a list of good things that could result from the problem you’re having to solve. 4. Laugh — Humor is a great stress-reducer. Studies indicate laughter can make you healthier. 5. Exercise — Regular exercise increases energy and releases brain biochemicals to ward off depression and anxiety.

Just a 15-minute walk a day will help keep body and soul together. 6. Improve your diet — During times of stress, you tend to skip meals or eat junk food. A diet rich in fruit, vegetables, and fiber will help you maintain the physical and mental stress you need to deal with the situation. 7. Get enough rest — sleep disturbances are common during stress. 8. Ask for help if you feel overwhelmed. Help can be just a phone call away. Even though roses are some of the most popular and beautiful flowering shrubs, starting a rose garden may seem daunting to new gardeners. However, growing roses for beginners can be simple and rewarding. Roses are easy to grow and, with a basic understanding of what they require, any garden enthusiast can be successful with growing them in their gardens. There are two types of rose plants, container and bare-root .

should be kept moist for the first few months after planting.

Container roses are great for novice gardeners because they’re easy to plant and establish quickly. They can also be purchased at local nurseries throughout the growing season.

With our mild central coast climate, the best time to plant roses is in early spring. Pruning of existing rose plants should be done at the end of winter or in January- February with clean, sharp pruners. Cuts should be made ¼ inch above the bud eyes. Throughout their growing months, prune off dead leaves, spent rose heads, and sucker shoots (shoots that grow out of grafts) as needed. Feed roses in early spring and again in early summer.

Bare-root roses have big advantages. They have a greater selection of varieties available. Plus, they are economical and can be ordered online and usually ship packed in sawdust. Unlike container roses, bare-root plants need to have their roots soaked overnight in water before planting. Also, the roots 18

EVERY ROSE HAS A SPECIAL MEANING…. Yellow Rose The color yellow is bright and conveys happy thoughts, so it’s no wonder that yellow roses showcase positive feelings of warmth. The yellow rose meaning is often considered that of friendship. White Rose There is a reason that brides wear white on their wedding day, because the color represents purity, innocence, and eternity. They can also signify a positive new beginning or everlasting love. Red Rose Whether it’s a single red stem, a dozen beauties, or an anniversary room strewn with petals, red is the ultimate hue when it comes to conveying your feelings of love.

four hours of direct sunlight is recommended. However, even when planted against a north wall (meaning no direct sunlight) roses can still perform well. The closer you plant your rose to other plants, the more competition there is for moisture and sunlight. For best results, plant your rose 3 feet away from other plants and 2 feet from other roses. Avoid planting a rose under an overhanging tree branch. The last thing you need at the end of your day is a highmaintenance flower in your garden. Fortunately, caring for roses is not as complicated as it is often thought to be. Whether you are working with easy-to-grow miniature roses, shrubs, or the more challenging climbing varieties, a little extra attention to feeding, watering, and pruning, roses will transform and elevate your garden.

Pink Rose A light rosy tone is often associated with femininity, so, naturally, the pink rose meaning is that of grace and sweetness. Other interpretations include gentleness, appreciation, joy, thankfulness, and elegance. Orange Rose The orange rose represents energy, pride, fascination, desire, passion, and gratitude. If you have something to say in a big way, orange roses will do the job! Lavender Rose One of the most romantic hues are lavender roses. Lavender roses can signify love at first sight, enchantment, adoration, wonder, and fascination. They are a lovely, unique color for roses. Green Rose Green roses do exist! The color green symbolizes renewal, rebirth, growth, and life. Giving green roses is an excellent way to encourage excitement about things to come. Black Rose One of the most unique colors, this dark tone is often considered a quite spooky hue. As such, the black rose meaning is that of mourning or death. Black roses can also represent the end of an era, job, or relationship.

ACCESSORY DWELLING UNIT

In-law units, granny units, or accessory dwelling units (ADUs), are selfcontained, smaller living units on the lot of a single-family home. These are units that typically include their own bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living space. They can either be attached to the primary house, such as an above-the-garage unit, or a basement unit. They are an easy way to provide homeowners with flexible space for a home office or an on-site caregiver, additional rental income, or a space for elderly family members to remain in a family environment. With the current housing crunch, homeowners can alleviate their income with an ADU. ADU housing can be used in different ways, the most common being as a rental unit. It does not take up as much space as new construction and provides privacy because of the additional bathroom and kitchen. If you have a large family and live in a single home, an ADU is the perfect solution to accommodate everyone. ADU housing has minimal impact on the environment compared to other housing alternatives. This is because they are generally smaller and take up less space. The use of an Accessory Dwelling Unit varies from person to person and family to family. Privacy is one of the biggest merits of living in an ADU. Different people have different requirements depending on their age. Senior citizens and teenagers might require a living space of their own. Even guests and caregivers might require space for themselves. Since an ADU is a complete living space with all essential amenities, it serves all these purposes. As it is a standalone home, even tenants can feel 20

Spring-Summer 2021

comfortable while living in one. It can be a modified structure or one that is newly constructed. What’s more, security is an added advantage since the structure is on the same lot. In some cases, an ADU looks more like another floor. Some homeowners even decide to make an ADU out of an extra bedroom. It’s like enjoying the best of both worlds. The cost of building an ADU can vary depending on multiple factors like size, type, materials, and location. There are attached and detached ADUs. Although a fully detached structure is more expensive, it is definitely more affordable than building a new primary home. Homeowners who are more concerned about rental income have the option of using readymade components to reduce the cost of construction. The focus can be more on functionality rather than aesthetics and resale value of the overall property. Even the insurance and taxes would be comparatively lower. Also, there are some common amenities that can be shared by all the residents of the property. If there’s a fairly large garage for instance, the residents of both homes can park their vehicles there. Furthermore, there is no extra investment to be made for land, parking, elevators, etc. California has enacted a series of laws in support of the development of ADUs. This helps owners of residential properties to convert garages and backyard buildings into fullfledged living spaces for use. Another objective of the program is to make the best use of the available urban space. There are

some regulations for the maximum size of square footage inside an ADU. California’s Department of Housing and Community Development generally allows up to 1, 200 square feet for a single ADU. But this size could be different for certain cities. Visit www.hcd.ca.gov for more information. Are there drawbacks to building an ADU? Yes, but very few and all fixable. You will lose basic storage for car and miscellaneous items. As a landlord you do have to manage that living space including repairs and house maintenance. If you’re not interested in doing that you can always hire a property manager. Along with basic construction of making the space feel cozy and comfortable, you’ll have additional costs based on your specific needs. If you’re building a rental unit, you’ll have to calculate the costs for putting in a kitchen and bathroom etc. An office would require access to high-speed internet and correct lighting. Adding an ADU to your property can be lucrative or just plain sensible if you are going to move a family member in. It can be built to match your house style and an ADU can do wonders for your property value. Spring-Summer 2021

Fairly easy to construct and even easier to maintain, raised garden beds are a great way to raise plants and vegetables in the comfort and convenience of your backyard. In a recent episode of the Exmark Original Series, “Done-in-AWeekend-Extreme,” landscape designer and show host, Doug Scott, spoke to organic gardener Joe Lamp’l of “Growing a Greener World” about the ins and outs of raised garden beds. Here are some of the top insights and tips Lamp’l shared. • W hy use raised garden beds? A raised garden bed can help facilitate the ideal growing environment, as most people don’t have that perfect soil naturally in their yard. Their accessibility makes them easier to work in and maintain. Plus, they’re a nice architectural design element in any landscape. • W hat’s the ideal size? The main rule of the thumb applies to width. The bed should be no wider than 4 feet, as you never want to compact the soil when working. Length however, 26

Spring-Summer 2021

is based on personal preference and needs. As far as height is concerned, you want the roots to be able to grow out and down as much as possible -- 6-inches at minimum. While 12-inches is common, anything higher is a bonus. • W hat materials work best? Treated lumber is the most readily available and economical material and will likely last the longest, however, being an organic gardener Lamp’l prefers untreated hardwood, as it lasts almost as long and doesn’t contain chemicals. Other materials you have around the home and yard, such as rocks, old tubs, etc., can work too. • W here’s the best location? Build your raised garden bed on level ground, in full sun exposure near a water supply. Continued on page 28.

TIPS TO GRILL BY

ALWAYS A SUMMER FAVORITE

Start with a Clean Grill Use a wire brush to clean the grates and remove any food residue or char. Then wipe down with paper towels or cloth using some vegetable oil. To clean a gas grill, turn your grill on high for 10 to 15 minutes with the lid closed to burn off any extra bits. Then turn off and let it cool slightly. Loosen the residue from the grill rack with a stainless-steel grill brush. No brush? Try a long-handled metal spatula or grip a ball of foil with a pair of tongs and rub the grates. Have your Essential Barbecue Tools An instant-read thermometer. Use it to check the internal temperature of the meat. A good pair of tongs and spatula. Potholders and a barbecue brush for cleaning Direct or Indirect Grilling? If the food takes less than 20 minutes to cook, use direct heat; if it takes longer, use indirect heat. This is especially good for grilling chicken to ensure juicy results. Smaller pieces like breasts and thighs are best grilled directly, while whole chickens should be grilled indirectly. How High Should the Heat Be? When using charcoal, let it burn until it’s covered with a thin coat of gray ash. Hold your hand about six inches above the grate. After three seconds, the temperature of the heat should force you to snatch your hand away. When using a gas grill, preheat to high. This takes 10 to 15 minutes. When indirect grilling, preheat the grill to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Let your Meat Rest before Grilling Let your steak rest out of the fridge for at least 30 minutes before cooking. If you throw a cold steak on the grill, it will not cook as evenly and will dry out much more easily. Use This Tip for Hamburgers To ensure your hamburger cooks evenly, make a thumbprint indentation into each patty before it goes on the grill. The indentation helps the patty hold its shape, rather than ending up puffy on the top. Don’t move the food around. In general, the fewer times you flip something, the better (once is ideal for most meats). If the meat is stuck to the grill, let it cook more — it will unstick itself when it’s ready for flipping. Undercook foods, just slightly. Food continues to cook after it leaves the grill. You can expect food temperature to go up about five degrees after leaving the grill, so plan accordingly. Keep a spray bottle handy for flare-ups. Flames are not your friend — they will char your food unpleasantly. Keep a spray bottle filled with water handy; this will allow you to dampen flare-ups without interfering with heat.

THE BEST PORK RIBS

PERFECT PORK RIBS 1 rack pork ribs ½ cup pork rub (recipe below) 1 cup unsweetened apple juice ½ cup orange marmalade or (peach or apricot preserve) ¼ cup apple cider vinegar 1 aluminum baking pan aluminum foil

SEASONING RUB:

Remove pork ribs from the packaging and pat dry with a paper towel. Spray the aluminum pan with nonstick cooking spray or rub with oil. Place ribs into pan. Sprinkle about half of the pork rub seasoning onto the back of the ribs and rub it into the meat. Flip the ribs over and season the opposite side with the remainder of the rub. Pour apple juice into the bottom of the pan. Cover pan with aluminum foil and place into the fridge until your grill is ready. Preheat grill to 300°. It’s important to try to maintain this temperature through the cooking

process so your ribs don’t cook too fast. Place pan of ribs onto grill. Cover grill and cook for about an hour maintaining 300° degrees during the cooking process. Ribs are done when an inserted meat thermometer reaches 145° degrees. Carefully remove ribs from the pan and place directly on the grill. Ensure heat stays on low. Meanwhile, in a small pot over medium heat, whisk together marmalade and vinegar. Continue to whisk until it is combined well. This should only take a minute or two. Take

½ ¼ 1 1 1 1 1 1

cup brown sugar cup smoked paprika teaspoon black pepper teaspoon kosher salt tablespoon chili powder tablespoon garlic powder tablespoon onion powder teaspoon cayenne (optional)

pot off heat and baste the cooked ribs with the marmalade sauce. Make sure to coat it well. Cover grill and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Then repeat the process one more time. Carefully remove the ribs off the grill and place on a large cutting board and allow the meat to rest and cool for a few minutes. With a sharp knife, carefully cut the ribs between the bones to serve.

Intentional or not, the garage often becomes the dumping ground for everything and anything that has no other place to go. There are so many home and garden essentials — tools, lawn equipment, outdoor toys, and so on —that need to find a home and your garage is the most practical place. A most important reason to clean out your garage is safety. More than 75 percent of reported garage-related injuries result from either falling or stepping on an object left on the garage floor, two hazards that could be avoided with adequate lighting and proper organization. About 60% of garage users report that their garage is unorganized, and one out of three garages does not have sufficient lighting. Most families utilize the garage for storage, and many frequently keep potentially dangerous items in their garage that must be handled with care. Start out by emptying the space. Put it all on your driveway and sort into three piles – trash, donate, and keep. Once you got those sorted, go through the “keep” pile and sort into categories -- tools, outdoor stuff, sports items, recreational, etc. For example, you wouldn’t put a screwdriver together with your gardening items. Hand tools like screwdrivers, hammers, etc. would go together in one area of the garage, while all your gardening tools would go in another area and so on. There are a few items that never should be kept in your garage: paint, paper products, bedding, books, pet food, and propane 38

Spring-Summer 2021

tanks. Paper goods, bedding, and pet food will attract critters, so these should be stored in your home. The less for the critters to get into the better! Empty propane tanks and paint should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated space, and full propane tanks should be placed outside at least 10 feet away from anything flammable. There are many storage solutions for garages out there. Cabinets are a good one because you can store and conceal items that are unsightly, vulnerable to the elements, or may be dangerous to children. New cabinets for the garage make for a nice and clean environment but if that does not fit your budget, don’t hesitate to find used ones that will do the job. Lots of people remodel their kitchens and are more than happy to have someone take the old cabinets off their hands. As always, make sure poisonous products such as pesticides, lighter fluid, paint thinner, antifreeze, and turpentine have child-resistant caps, are clearly labeled and stored in a locked cabinet out of sight and reach of children. Shelving is always good because you can store labeled tubs on them. For items that are not used on a regular basis, such as holiday decorations, you will always be able to find what you need when the need arises. Of course, you should always anchor your cabinets and shelves to garage walls for stability.

Committing a weekend to organizing your garage can be rewarding and cleansing (pun intended)! Think about how great it is going to feel to walk into your garage and know exactly where the item(s) you are looking for are right where you put them! Plastic storage bins are perfect to separate and organize your equipment by sport or season. Unfortunately, they usually get stacked against a wall somewhere, which makes getting to the bottom bins difficult, especially for your household’s littlest teammates. Consider building or buying a cubby system in which the tubs will fit. Different color bins are a good way to make finding what you need a breeze. If you’re wanting to organize your small tools in more than a drawer, try a peg board system. These are so versatile for hanging whatever you might need to grab at a moment’s notice as you can see if all at once. If you actually end up with free wall space when finished, peg boards are great for bicycles, big tools, hoses, etc. The garage ceiling is a great spot for hanging long, flat stuff you don’t use every day, such as ladders and seasonal sports gear. Make sure that any shelves you hang from the ceiling don’t interfere with your garage door’s operation and that there is enough clearance to avoid scraping the roof of your car. A workbench is a must have for an organized garage. You can buy them ready-made or take an old table, put it against the wall, and add shelves and pegboard to hold your gears. A set of casters turns any table into a mobile workstation; make sure they don’t create an uncomfortably tall table. Finish it off with a padded stool. Spring-Summer 2021

KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE WITH TIPS FROM BEST FRIENDS ANIMAL SOCIETY

Watching your dog or cat get sick from toxic items or poison is a nightmare for any pet owner. Symptoms of poisoning can be especially traumatic, ranging from seizures and vomiting to nosebleeds and diarrhea. “Nobody wants to see their pets suffer in such a painful way or, worst-case scenario, have a fatal incident. That’s why it’s important to make sure your home environment keeps dogs and cats as safe as possible,” said Dr. Erin Katribe, veterinarian and medical director for Best Friends Animal Society (http://bestfriends.org/). As March is Pet Poison Prevention Month, Best Friends encourages pet owners to protect their pets from potential ingestion of any of the following:

• Antifreeze • Household cleaners • Bait for rodents • Ice-melting products • Batteries (which cancontain corrosive • Medications – prescribed and fluid)

• Car care products, such as cleaners or oils

• Fertilizer • Gorilla Glue (or similar products)

over-the-counter

• Nicotine products • Pesticides for insects • Pool or pond products

“Pets can be very inquisitive, so it’s always best to keep these items in a sealed cabinet area that your pets cannot have access to, whether that’s in the home, in a shed, or in a garage,” Katribe said. “If you use any of these products, always make sure to clean up any spillage immediately and thoroughly so ingestion can’t happen that way, either.” Food can be toxic to pets, so it’s always important to remember to never give or allow your pets to have access to any of the following:

• Alcoholic beverages • Chicken and turkey bones • Substances containing caffeine, such • Grapes and raisins • Onions and garlic as coffee • Chocolate • Macadamia nuts • Fatty foods, especially drippings and • Salt and sugar • Yeast or bread dough grease from cooking “Plants can also be toxic and poisonous to pets,” Katribe said. “These plants include English ivy or holly, lilies, Chinaberry, iris,

40

poinsettia, pokeweed and daphne. For cats, even contact with the pollen of some lilies can be severely toxic.” Should your pet show any signs of poisoning, which include vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, blood in stool, paralysis, loss of appetite, bruising, nosebleeds, irregular heartbeat or inability to urinate, a veterinary consult is in immediate order. “Call your veterinary office or an emergency clinic as soon as possible to let them know of your pet’s symptoms and what they could have possibly ingested. The veterinary staff may be able to provide instructions on how to help decrease the severity of the situation prior to coming in or they may advise that you come in immediately,” Katribe said. “Time is of the essence when it comes to minimizing the dangerous effects of any poison, so every second counts.” Best Friends Animal Society is a leading animal welfare organization working to end the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters by 2025. Founded in 1984, Best Friends is a pioneer in the no-kill movement and has helped reduce the number of animals killed in shelters from an estimated 17 million per year to around 625,000. Best Friends runs lifesaving programs all across the country, as well as the nation’s largest nokill animal sanctuary. Working collaboratively with a network of more than 3,200 animal welfare and shelter partners, and community members nationwide, Best Friends is working to Save Them All®. ADD A DASH OF SPICE & STYLE TO YOUR KITCHEN In today’s homes, kitchens serve a multitude of purposes beyond being a space to whip up a meal. They’re the heart of your home; the command center; the family gathering spot. So it’s no wonder why kitchens are where homeowners invest their renovation budget and why homebuyers pay a premium for an updated look. And savvy design professionals agree, spicing up your kitchen with stylish, timeless and natural materials is a recipe for success. Laying it out

Deciding on cabinets

Planning a new or remodeled kitchen can be an exciting, yet overwhelming time. Making the process less stressful boils down to ensuring the layout meets your needs. When starting a project, if you hire a designer its important that they get to know you and how you will be using the kitchen they design. If an architect is involved, they should also work hand-inhand with them so that any overarching architectural vision they may have is included in the interior design as well. Nowadays, homeowners are mostly looking for open concept floor plans with kitchens that open up to living and dining rooms. And because there’s less available wall space, there are fewer upper cabinets. To compensate, modern kitchen layouts feature expansive islands with seating and storage, a pantry for canned and dry goods, and a butler pantry to hide away less frequently used items. 46

Once the layout is determined, then we get to work on selecting building products and finishes. While there is a wide range of products to choose from, popular styles focus on fine materials and classic design elements. Being near the beach, its natural to gravitate toward light and natural materials - and products like real wood are just more beautiful. A wood like cypress is stable and durable with unique charm.

Spring-Summer 2021

When it comes to choosing cabinetry, it doesn’t take long to notice the difference between cabinetry that’s built with solid wood and what you can find at the big box stores. Most homeowners value the natural character and quality of solid wood cabinets. Selecting a finish can be tricky, because trends can come and go. Painted cabinets seem to be all the rage these days, but a natural wood finish is tasteful and timeless. The look of the cabinets will dictate the style, weather its modern farm, rustic style or classic each has a distinct look and feel. Finding a designer and architect:

If you decide to do your kitchen DYI we recommend hiring a designer who can help with the look, style and space you have to work with. If your making structural changes to your kitchen then you’ll need an architect. The Central Coast is full of talented designers and architects for more information visit www.coastalhomeandgarden.com
