A Winter Wedding Cake The wedding cake is an important part of the reception and so much more than just a tasty dessert. Your wedding cake will, in fact, be the centerpiece of your wedding reception. The eyes of all your guests will look with longing at the layers of cream, frosting and

sugar waiting for the cutting so all can share. So, when choosing your wedding cake, make sure that it matches the style and theme of your wedding and reception, and is a reflection of you as a couple. Choosing a wedding cake is worth the time to find just the right cake and just the right person to create it. Start this experience by looking at and tasting as many wedding cakes as you can and choose with care.

Research:

Determine what you and your fiancé are willing to spend on your cake. Start looking through wedding magazines for wedding cake examples. Narrow down your selection to three examples before meeting with the baker or designer.

Have a theme:

Most people want their cake to coordinate with elements of

The overall style, theme and formality of your wedding

• The budget for your wedding cake • How many guests you expect

• The color scheme for the wedding Guidelines to ensure you get • The flowers you will be using the wedding cake you want. You have probably seen those fabulous cakes in the wedding magazines that accent the marriage theme and add glamour to the setting as well. If that is what you want for your wedding then you have to do some homework before meeting with the cake designer or baker.

the wedding so you should have a good idea of:

Bride and Groom:

Consult with each other because your cake should be a reflection of you as a couple. Find a style, flavor and design that make you both happy. Knowing these things will help you select a cake that will coordinate beautifully with your wedding and give the festivities style and sophistication. Winter weddings are special for many reasons including the wonderful choice of wedding cakes that they offer. Winter allows a wide variety of scrumptious cakes including mousses and ice creams. The choice of winter cake is truly limited only by your imagination and your sense of adventure.

Besides the traditional tiered wedding cake for your winter wedding, you can also have that traditional cake made from your favorite ice cream or a fine mousse. Other choices include a cool mint icing along with spun sugar decorations for a winter wonderland wedding. Working with an experienced cake designer will help you choose exactly the right flavors, frosting, design and decoration for your winter wedding cake. Ask around – you will be surprised how many people can point you in the right direction. Check

out the advertisers in our magazine, Coastal Wedding and online at www. coastalwedding.com. It has everything you’ll need to plan your wedding from planners, to site locations, cake designers, beauty tips, advice and more.

Bride/Bride’s Family • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Photos by: Neil Simmons

Who Pays for What? Bringing up a discussion about who will pay for what in the wedding might be an awkward thing to do. It is, however, a topic that must be discussed lest you get stuck with all costs. Historically, the bride and/or her family have assumed the majority of the wedding related expense. The more modern approach allows for division of costs between the couple and/or both sets of parents. Nowadays, with the cost of weddings growing and many couples marrying later when they are more likely to have careers and incomes of their own, more brides and grooms are contributing to, or even picking up entirely, the cost of the wedding. And the parents of many grooms are also contributing more than in the past. A popular option is to have the bride’s family, the groom’s family, and the couple each contribute one third. Following are some of the more traditional guidelines that you can adopt or modify to suit your particular needs. The itemization also provides a checklist of matters that may require attention in your wedding preparations.

Sit-down meals are considered more elegant and service-oriented. It is recommended that when choosing an entrée for your reception, stick to a traditional favorite. While menus with more than one choice are appealing, they required more organizational attention and are more expensive. For a multi-entrée menu, you need to collect the meal choices from your guests ahead of time and may have to provide meal cards identifying the choices. Problems can occur when your guest forgets what he or she ordered or changes his or her mind. Instead of offering a multi-entrée menu, consider a combination plate such as a mixed grill.

No matter what menu style you choose, be certain that the format reflects the theme and your personal flare for this your once-ina-lifetime celebration with your family and friends.

5 Great Tips for Planning your Beach Wedding O

ne of the most dramatic and romantic locations to have a wedding this spring and summer is the beach. You have the beautiful backdrop of the ocean and hopefully white sands. The best part is that a beach wedding can occur in almost any location where a body of water meets the shore. This makes it possible to have a unique wedding depending on the characteristics of the beach. A beach on Hawaii will not be the same as one in the North Carolina Outer Banks. Each place has its own special flavor that can be used to add a unique twist to your wedding ceremony. Here are some great ides to help you plan your beach wedding. Look to local spots for inspiration. Like mentioned before, the location can determine the character of the wedding. Picking a place that is near you that has significance is a great idea. It can be a beach that was a favorite place to go to when you were younger or somewhere that has important memories concerning you and the groom. Also try to use floral arrangements made of flower that are native to the area. If you are holding a wedding on the beach try to keep abreast of weather conditions. This way you will be prepared and not caught off guard. The result will be spectacular.

aware that some of your guests might have food allergies. So also try to have viable alternatives in case any of your guests can not safely eat your menu items. Put thought into personal gifts that you give to key people in your wedding such as your bridesmaids. The criteria for choosing these items are much higher. So try to make room in your budget for these important purchases. After all these are some of the people helping you plan your beach wedding.

Author, Aaron Hu, If you are looking for beach wedding favors, EWeddingFavors.com has the biggest selection available.

Think about what beach favors you are going to give guests. The point of your guest gifts is to act as souvenirs and mementos of your special day. A great idea is to use marine animals and plants as the motifs for your favors. This will allow you to match a wide variety of favors to your beach ceremony theme and even personalize gifts. Also try giving beach related items such as towels, flip flops, or beach bags. These are not only great for your theme but also will be useful for guests when they enjoy the beach after the wedding or they go on their own seaside excursion. Use marine grasses, shells, and other seaside items at decorations at your wedding and ceremony. For example you can use seashells and dried seaweed as aisle markers. You can also use sea related motifs to come up with unique and beautiful place cards and centerpieces for the guest tables at your reception. Use your own imagination and ingenuity to bring all the beauty of the sea and shore to your nuptials in a manner that will be remembered long after you have exchanged vows with your groom. Try to make your reception menu match the beach theme of your ceremony. A good idea is to serve sea food dishes. This can be anything from fish and crab to shrimp and scallops. This will give your guests a delicious taste of the sea. While doing this also be coastalwedding.com

3. Collect business cards. If you can, get a business card for each and every business that you visit or salesperson you speak with. Clip these all into your planner. If you attend a bridal fair, collect cards from as many vendors as you can. This will give

you a large selection of caterers, deejays, etc. to choose from and it will be easy to find their phone numbers, email address or website in the relevant section of your planner. 4. Collect brochures and samples. Place these in your wedding planner. Fill your planner with as many items as you can collect-they will make planning the details of your wedding so much easier. 5. Write in all down in your wedding planner. Write down anything including stores you’ve visited, caterers, songs you like, etc. If you tried on several bridal gowns at several different stores write down the name of the store, the designer, the price, and a brief description of the dress. When going back for a second look at a dress you liked, finding it will be easy because of the description in your planner. Whether planning an elaborate wedding one-year from now, or a small ceremony just three months away, a wedding organizer will make your wedding planning much easier. The time and money you save will be worth the few minutes you spend putting it together.

Newlyweds… Expand Your Space! Making the Small Look Larger

I

s your living space barely big enough for just you – and now your spouse will be moving in, too? Before trying to sell off all of your favorite stuff in a yard sale, try redecorating your space and updating your furniture to gain space and make it look roomier.

Here are some hints for expanding your space.

You might be surprised at what a difference a few mirrors can make. They can really open up a room. New mirrors are expensive but you may be able to find ones you can afford by searching garage sales and flea markets. Another idea to bring the outside in and make a room seem more expansive is to use wallpaper murals with scenic landscapes that fade into faraway backgrounds to help give your living space a larger feel.

Looking Larger

Using Space Better

While fashion experts recommend you wear darker colors to look smaller, the opposite is true for your apartment or house. Lighter colors in your home will make it look more open and roomier.

Fill your living space with fewer, larger items. Instead of trying to squeeze as many small decorations and items in as possible you can make your room feel less cluttered and more open with larger furniture such as just one big sofa or an oversized armAlong the same lines, using a variety of chair and display fewer knickknacks. To colors also can make your living space look create more visual open space, place your smaller and closed in. To open up space, furniture and other pieces at angles or in use a same-color scheme. For example, the center of the room away from the walls. paint your walls ivory, beige, or light blues Also, by substituting your coffee table, or greens. This will also help to highlight dining table or end tables with glass ones, your paintings, photos furniture and area you can create the illusion of more space. decorations.

You can also increase your living space by using multi-functional furniture. Like a headboard that also works as a bookshelf, or a couch that converts into a bed for guests when they stay overnight or by having a dining room table with leaves when you have the need for a feast with family or friends. Even if you are considering having to expand your living space, by taking advantage of these ideas to make the living space you already have seem a little bit larger and more useful, you and your spouse can take the time to enjoy getting to know each other in your “cozy” space for two.

REGISTRY DO’S AND DON’TS Get savvy before you walk into your local specialty store or department store to draw up your registry wish list. Here’s what you need to know.

Photos Courtesy Annie Glass

•Do register at least six months before your wedding date to give your guests options to choose from your list for shower and engagement parties. •Don’t register during your lunch hour (too short). Allow plenty of time to decide what your wedding gifts will be. Call ahead for an appointment with the bridal registrar. •Don’t bring your mother along, or sister or best friend, unless it’s your future partner, when you register. You are starting a life together and sharing a home, it only makes sense to register together. Don’t forget to practice the fine art of compromise together! •Do sit down with your fiancé and talk about your likes and dislikes, how you envision yourselves entertaining, if any, differently than how you do now. Think about future holidays and family get-togethers as well as parties and Sunday dinners. •Don’t limit your wish list. Go ahead and register for that one of a kind hand blown vase. Or limited edition Annieglass! It’s called a wish list for a reason. •Do get organized and stay that way. Treat your bridal registry with a professional attitude, the way you would a work project or wedding- planning duties. Despite computerized tracking and printouts of gifts, mistakes can and do happen. Keep track of what you receive from whom as well as what thank you notes you sent. •Do ask your bridal registrar for help with bridesmaid, groomsmen and thank you gifts for those who gave showers or parties in your honor. Engraved messages of thanks on Annieglass make the nicest gifts. Consider giving hearts engraved with your names, wedding date and thanks to your bridesmaid for sharing your big day.

Ann Morhauser is the award winning designer of Annieglass glass tableware, handmade in Santa Cruz County and found in the most discriminating stores, restaurants and bridal registries worldwide. Santa Cruz County is fortunate enough to be home to both her company stores, brimming with the most unique treasures for your home and table.
