he numbers are troubling. Each year, millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental health condition. One in five U.S. adults experience mental illness each year, one in 20 U.S. adults experience serious mental illness each year and one in six U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year. Mental illness affects everyone directly or indirectly through family, friends or coworkers. That’s why the National Alliance on Mental Illness and other organizations, during the first week in October, raise awareness of mental Illness, fight discrimination and provide support through Mental Illness Awareness Week. Resources are at nami.org This year’s activities are centered on new awareness campaign, “Together for Mental Health,” where supporters will focus on the importance of advocating for better care for people with serious mental illness. Each day throughout the week, people who have experienced serious mental illness to talk about the need for improved crisis response and care. The event will begin at Siltanen Community Park, 127 Vine Hill Road, Scotts Valley, with options of a mountain bike route, paved route, family friendly, or horse trail!
