ll the planning, laughter and tears that go into planning your wedding and the rehearsal day has arrived, time to relax and enjoy your friends, family and most of all your time with your future husband or bride to be. Traditionally, on the day before your wedding, the festivities begin with a rehearsal. Over time, this has split into two separate events, a practice session along with a rehearsal dinner. The dinner brings close friends and family together, generally the same people who attended the rehearsal, plus immediate family. Although a formal rehearsal of the ceremony is not required, most officiants will want to take a run through of the full program. The officiant will give everyone their cues for the next day, so things will go smoothly. Knowing where to stand and what to do will ensure everyone is less nervous at the wedding. Ideally, you should have the rehearsal at the wedding

site. This can be especially valuable if there are young children in the wedding party. Sometimes however, the requirements of the site do not make a rehearsal feasible. A rehearsal can be done in someone’s home, or in just about any large space. After the rehearsal, everyone gathers for a celebration dinner, where the bride and groom are the center of attention. In this less-formal setting, family members meeting for the first time can mingle and get better acquainted. Unlike the Big Day, the bride and groom are under less pressure and have more time to visit with relatives in a fun and relaxed way. Once everyone has arrived and is seated, either the bride or groom should take a moment to welcome their guests with a few heartfelt words and thank them for attending. Numerous toasts are usually part of the rehearsal dinner. If you need someone to start the toasts, the groom’s father is a good choice.

The rehearsal dinner guest list should include immediate family, (parents and siblings) wedding-party members, and any spouses and significant others along with the parents of any child attendants. You should invite the officiant and his/ her spouse to the dinner, unless it’s a civil service. If you have out-of-town guests who have already arrived for the wedding, you can invite them to the dinner portion of the evening.

Planning weddings in 2020 was nothing short of unconventional… Many couples are leaning towards a backyard wedding to avoid any unforeseen cancellations. Many couples are tired of waiting to get married, especially if they’ve already canceled or postponed their wedding once.

seating households together for your reception seating. Although this may be different from the norm, you will have to do what makes not just yourself comfortable but your guests too.

For personal reasons you may want a small wedding and now is the perfect time to do a backyard wedding! Here are some tips and things to think about when planning a backyard wedding. Catering your backyard wedding with a family style meal will add to the atmosphere. Encourage the attendees to dress in casual to complete the feeling of getting married in a backyard. You can really get into the spirit by having a dance floor with country music for your entertainment and appropriate dancing at the reception. Consider holding the ceremony in a special spot with lots of flowers and evening lighting. Social distancing… your area and neighborhood may still be under certain restrictions, always check your local government to get the updates. Even if not legally required practicing social distancing can only help ensure the safety of your guests. If you do opt to set up a socially distanced space, be sure to plan your layout ahead of time. You can place chairs for the ceremony and label them so households are sitting amongst each other. WHO PAYS FOR WHAT?

You may have heard of the old-fashioned rule that certain people have to pay for certain wedding costs. While it’s by no means mandatory for the bride’s family to pay for the engagement party and the groom’s parents to foot the bill for the rehearsal dinner, a working knowledge of how a wedding bill typically shakes out will help everyone navigate through the details. The more modern approach allows for division of costs between the couple and/or both sets of

parents. Nowadays, with the cost of weddings growing and many couples marrying later when they are more likely to have careers and incomes of their own, more brides and grooms are contributing to, or even picking up entirely, the cost of the wedding.

WEDDING BANQUET ON THE GO Try a Food and Beverage Truck for Your Outdoor Wedding

If you want your wedding reception to take place somewhere off the beaten path or at a residence that doesn’t have the facilities for easy catering, consider a gourmet catering truck! The catering truck has become a favorite of the wedding world with mobile, quick service catering, and a fun way of doing your reception differently and often at a cost savings. Couples considering hiring a caterer with a food truck for their reception should think about if it fits the style and/ or theme of their wedding. Using a food truck at your wedding can also save lots of money compared to standard catering services and solve planning problems for venues without major kitchen 16

facilities – by putting the kitchen on wheels! Obviously, this allows an almost infinite variety of meal venues from outdoor informal picnics to intimate foldednapkins-and-silverware formal outdoor or even indoor dinners. Depending on the caterer’s truck selections, the choice of cuisine can run from a simple menu of hamburgers or tacos to more formal offerings such as rib eye, barbecue, or even cordon bleu. Many catering truck operators offer exotic and unique menus to make that special day memorable for the couple and their guests. No matter what you’ve got a taste for, there’s sure to be a food truck to satisfy even the most finicky of palettes. Many caterers today offer the choice of traditional catering coast alwed d ing . com

or the option of serving directly from the catering truck. For some of your guests, it may be the first time they’ve had the food truck experience. Why not let them experience something new and different? Just another way for them to always remember the wonderful time they had at your wedding! Gourmet catering trucks work really well at outdoor settings such as in a park, beach, or private residence. A favorite wedding trend is the idea of having a food truck show up late night at your venue or your after-party spot to feed guest as they start to get hungry again after all that celebrating. Don’t forget the beverages! Your outdoor wedding can also include a mobile bartender. There are several bartenders that have created bars out of trailers, food truck type vehicles, and many more creative ways to bring the bar to you. Be adventurous! Find that perfect place for your wedding and reception having the flexibility of knowing that wherever it is, the catering truck will be there to serve you, your guests, and helping to make those memories of a lifetime.

PICKING THE PERFECT VENUE FOR YOUR

Special Day

Getting engaged is one of the most exciting moments of your life. After you’ve called all your closest family and friends to tell them the good news, it’s time to start planning your big day. Picking a venue has become an even more important part of planning your wedding these days. This is your big day, and you deserve to celebrate it with your loved ones. Here are some ideas to check out. PUBLIC PARKS

Is there a favorite public park you frequently visit for hiking and picnics? If you love it, it might just be the place for your wedding! Many public parks have lots of lawn, beautiful fountains, gazebos, and lots of picnic area. Not only will the natural landscape serve as a beautiful backdrop for pictures but choosing a park as your venue can also help you save money on an event space, decorations, and more. Most public parks are okay for bringing in all of your own things for having a personalized wedding, but you should still check your county for permits. Check ca.gov if you are interested in getting married at a state park. 22

MUSEUM

AQUARIUM OR ZOO

If your favorite day trip going to the local aquarium or zoo? Well then, take a walk on the wild side! Imagine saying your vows accompanied by elephants or giraffes or dining next to a floor-to-ceiling glass tank full of sea life. Your wedding decor is done for you when you choose one of these venues for your vows! You would be surprised at how many of these venues have wedding packages. And as a bonus, at many zoos and aquariums give a percentage of the rental fee to help support ongoing conservation and wildlife protection efforts. What could be more perfect for creature-loving couples who want an unconventional (and unforgettable!) event!

Frequently known for dramatic architecture, incredible exhibits, and curated collections—museums are works of art in themselves! They often provide such a striking backdrop that little else is needed in terms of décor. A museum will provide an endless color palette to play with. Couples can use the in-house artwork to accent their décor, rather than start completely from scratch. Like your love story, a wedding at a museum is truly one-of-a-kind. Imagine your guests dining among exhibits that might include beautiful paintings and exquisite antiques. From art museums to natural history museums, the venue type is a definite way to wow your guests. STADIUM

Is sports your thing? Check out the stadiums of your local teams. Some might have wedding packages, or some might just be available for rent and you figure out the décor (sports, of course!). When teams are out of season (or simply offsite), stadiums open their doors to other events, including weddings. Can you imagine getting married on the same ground your favorite sports team plays on!? Yes! No matter where you choose to recite your vows with your future spouse, make it a memorable one by getting married in a venue that reflects your interests. Whether it be a barn or an aquarium, your guests will enjoy an unforgettable day! Continued on page 24

Continued on page 23 GOLF COURSE

Although a golf course wedding may not have crossed your mind before, it’s worth checking out. While you might think of a golf club as a reception venue, it can be a beautiful site for your ceremony too. Hosting both your ceremony and reception at one site is easier on you, your wedding party, and your guests. The manicured grounds of a golf course offer a variety of spectacular options, regardless of the season. In spring and summer, the course is lush and green. As the leaves change in fall, Mother Nature shares her beautiful pallet of oranges, yellows, and reds. Some courses offer a wedding ceremony right on the course and the reception inside. BEACH

Being out in the open, in a romantic oceanfront setting while the wind and waves sing their praises over your union sounds like a dream come true. Especially if you and your betrothed are lovers of the ocean. The beauty and simplicity of the beach can be enhanced to create a dazzling setting for your vows and reception. You can walk down your sand aisle, maybe covered with a beautiful mat with flower petals on it, to a stunning arch made of branches and flowers. The beach is perfect for small weddings, you can create your own intimate seating and reception area for your guests. The decision to get married on the beach might include county rules so you check before you make any solid commitments. Some counties require permits and insurance, and some don’t require anything. Just set up and show up! ON THE FARM

Whether it be your family farm or a farm venue, farm weddings can take place in any season and often bring a natural, earthy, and rustic style to a wedding. From underneath gigantic trees, an out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere field, or a beautiful big barn, you can choose just about any setting for your farm wedding. The best thing about farm weddings is that they can be kept simple. You don’t have to be extra fancy. There is a clean slate in which to add your own DIY centerpieces, décor, it’s your day! Rustic chic, simple elegance? Of course!

WINERIES AND BREWERIES

Rolling fields, dazzling colors, and plenty of natural light are just a few of the perks of hosting your wedding at a vineyard. Vineyard weddings are very romantic, it’s a good way to mix natural, rustic, and vintage in one wedding. Use all the advantages of a winery in your décor: grapevine, wine barrels, bottles, grapes and lush greenery. Most wineries offer wedding packages but start out with calling your favorite! Breweries offer a fun and casual wedding venue. You can create simple wedding décor and offer the brewery specials as your beverage. Most breweries have a large outdoor area and some even have outdoor games that add to the fun!

Pet-Friendly

ATTIRE

FOR A WA L K D O W N THE AISLE

For couples planning a wedding, there is greater opportunity than ever to weave personal elements into every aspect of the big day. Many traditional “rules” of wedding planning have given way to let couples celebrate as they see fit—even including their four-legged family members and inviting guests to do the same. Whether you’re a bride whose furry friend will play a leading role in the festivities, or a guest bringing your pooch along for the party, these tips from the pet experts at Pet Pals will help ensure your canine companions join the celebration in comfort and style. Put your pet to work. Think ahead about how your pet will participate in the fun: as a member of the wedding party, perhaps as ring bearer or flower girl? Give your pet a rehearsal run to be sure he or she is up for the task. Choose a fur-friendly venue. If pets are welcome, make sure they’ll also be safe. For instance, avoid freshly fertilized lawns and plants, as well as flowers that are toxic to pets. Find out where your fur babies can go and where they need to be on a leash. If possible, 28

wedding Coastal

| 2021

give your pet a few sneak peeks of the location. Don’t make pets suffer for fashion. Skip the puppy couture version of a tight pair of shoes or an itchy shirt tag, and choose a stylish pup-friendly ensemble instead. Made of lightweight, breathable materials, in a variety of wedding collection for dogs features timeless design elements, simple color palettes and complementary accessories such as collars and leashes to help ensure your pooch puts their best foot forward. The limited-edition line of dapper, sweet and sophisticated wedding attire, including elegant tuxedos to bowadorned dresses, is available at most local pet stores. Remember, a “dress rehearsal” can help you make sure your pets can sit and stay comfortably in their wedding day attire. Pamper your pet. Now is not the time to skimp on pampering. From lush, oxygen-infused baths to haircuts fit for a show dog, nail trims to non-toxic chalking and decorative stenciling, let a groomer take the lead on your pet’s look for the big day. Keep everyone fed. Make sure your four-legged friends have more

than table scraps to nosh on during the reception. Serve food in a portable bowl and bring treats, too. In case one of the guests can’t resist helping Fido sneak a snack, be sure the human menu doesn’t contain anything that’s harmful to pets. Provide plenty of fresh water, and if the venue is outdoors, use a large block of ice to keep your canine’s water cool all day. Make sure your pet is the party type. Before committing your pet to a vibrant celebration, be sure he or she is comfortable with commotion, loud music, crowds, and strangers. Consider signing up for a training class beforehand; brushing up on your pet’s best behavior can only enhance the day. Assign a chaperone. If you have a leading role in the big day as the bride or a member of the wedding party, recruit a staff or family member to double as your pet’s dedicated chaperone. Arm them with a pooperscooper and pick up bags. Help create a quiet, safe space for the chaperone to guide your pet away from the excitement if it becomes overwhelming.

Finding the perfect wedding dress is no easy task; the trends for wedding dresses in 2021 are some of our favorites. High slits, lace, ruffles and tiers are among a few of the elegant details that are trending this year. Don’t write off the puffy sleeves until you see yourself in the mirror looking like Princess Diana, and other brides of the maximalist era of fashion. Although style ranks pretty high in the decision making process of choosing your wedding dress, you should also consider how you feel in the dress, the dress that makes you feel the most beautiful is the one!

The gorgeous sight of your little loved one dressed in a flowing dress with ballet slippers is enough to melt every one’s heart. Dress them to coordinate with the wedding party and they’ll be sure to steal every one’s heart. Incorporating little ones into your special day is a tradition that’s happened for centuries, the flower girl symbolizes the bride losing her innocence and the ring bearer, also known as a pageboy, traditionally would carry the bride’s train, with a prayer book and the rings.

When it comes to wedding fashions, brides tend to get all of the attention. The grooms’ attire is equally as important and really reflects his personal taste. There are a few trends for grooms in 2021 that are sure to add some pizzazz to the big day. Getting married between October and March? Velvet is an increasingly popular option for tux jackets and ties. Navy has been popular for years and it isn’t going anywhere in 2021, the classics are still going strong and navy is a grounding color that’s fun to accessorize. The devil is in the details… don’t under estimate the power of accessorizing with detailed choices. Adding unique, personal details like monogrammed loafers, or cufflinks are a great way for a groom to show off his lovable personality!

You are planning your dream wedding, putting extensive thought and effort into every detail. It is going to be a day to remember for the rest of your life, and before you know it, it will be over. The great thing is that years from the wedding, you will have the moments, emotions, and memories captured by your photo team. Hiring a photographer is at the top of the list for your wedding day. Your wedding photos will be with you forever. They can be brought out anytime to relive your day and of course, your future children will relish looking at their parent’s wedding pictures. If you are getting married at a resort or venue where they offer most everything, they probably have a list of photographers who have worked there in the past. The benefit of hiring a photographer that has worked at your venue is that you can see full weddings captured by that photographer at your venue, the different shots, and places they have taken photos. Your photographer will know the venue, the layout, the best places to go for those intimate shots of just the two of you, they will know where to capture the best shots for any group photos, or when you enter for your reception. If your wedding is taking place at a beach, a house, the woods, etc., you will need to get referrals from friends, check websites, and then check out the work of the photographer. Plan on hiring your photographer at least eight months to one year in advance, especially during these times when postponed weddings are back to planning. Budgeting can run from $1000 to $5000 40

depending on what you are looking for. Most photographers offer several wedding packages in which to choose from. You can always find one that will work for you. The key is to find a photographer and their work that you love, it is also important to make sure you have a good rapport with them too, and that you feel comfortable and relaxed around them. The more comfortable and relaxed you feel with them, the more relaxed you will feel when having you photo taken. This makes for more natural and fun photos, if you feel awkward then it will show in your photos. A photographer is a must have addition to your wedding but how about also hiring a videographer? Your photos capture each moment, your day literally flies by, and the addition of a videographer gives a different perspective of reliving those special moments, to be able to hear laughter, speeches, vows, and see the smiles, dances, and walks down the aisle in motion. With so much technology available at our fingertips these days, it is easy to think about having a friend or family member take some video. But wedding videography is so much more than that. A professional videographer has the equipment and the know-how to capture your day in a way that evokes the best emotions, looks beautiful and lasts a lifetime. Like photographers, they are the experts in angles, lighting, and locations, and can truly tell a story through coast alwed d ing . com

film. You can expect to spend just as much on a quality videographer as you would a top-notch photographer, so be sure that is factored into your budget before you begin your search. Some photographers also specialize in videography, and vice-versa, so it is possible to get a package deal! Once you have found a videographer you feel a connection with, it is time to ask a few specific questions. Look thoroughly through the contract and make sure expectations are clear about turnaround time, in what format will they deliver your video, and is it a format that will allow as much longevity as possible? Think about the important what-if questions, bad weather, a reschedule, or if the videographer cannot make it for some reason? If your wedding requires the videographer to travel, which costs are you responsible for? Do they only use legally licensed music and songs in post-processing? These days wedding videos range from documentary to very cinematic. Make sure that you see samples of work that align

coasta l w eddi n g .com

with your style. A cinematographer that exclusively focuses on documentary style filmmaking may not be the best fit if you are looking for a cinematic wedding video. Remembering your wedding day on film is a decision that should not be taken lightly. Do your research, ask for referrals, and take your time making your decision so you know you have made the right one and you wedding day can come to life always.
