Theme Weddings The Creative Side of Getting Married
G
one are the vanilla, everyone the same, traditional weddings of the past. Theme weddings are in! What is a theme wedding? Weddings themes can come from where the ceremonies will be taking place such as a beach wedding. A theme wedding can be based on family history and tradition such as a Mexican or Croatian theme or its source can be shared values such as a “Green theme wedding. Whatever its origin, the theme makes the wedding special for the happy couple and memorable for the wedding party and guests. Family history can be on display at the same time it is being made. Exotic locations can be emulated without the time and expense of going there. Get both families involved and make them a part of creating the theme. Whatever the theme of the wedding, it’s yours and it will help to make those wedding memories last for a lifetime.

Beach Weddings A
wedding is one of the most memorable days that you have in your lifetime. These days most couples are choosing to have their weddings in exotic locations. They prefer the natural setting that a beach offers. Some of these exotic locations have breathtaking beaches and this is where the weddings take place. There are some ideas that you can incorporate in your planning that can make it a memorable experience. These ideas include:
Finding the best place
The invitation
Such weddings usually need a lot of preparation and you need to do adequate research on the location. The state you are getting married in may need you to fulfill some requirements, which can take even months. Make sure you start the preparations early to avoid any disappointments.
Give your guests a hint of the wedding location by putting some sand in their invitations. This is a unique way of doing things. You can also include a picture of a beach on the invitation to prepare them for what is coming.
6
coastalwedding.com
Select a place that will suit your wedding theme and also take into consideration the distance your guests will have to travel in order to attend it. If the place is too far, some might find it difficult to attend. Make sure that the facilities are in good order at the beach you choose.
Make an early start
Inquire about everything
Get there early
Do not feel embarrassed to ask questions, as this will ensure that you are well armed with the necessary information. Read as many magazines on the subject as you can find and ask for advice from those who have had beach weddings.
Make preparations to get to the location early so that you are sure everything is going according to plan. This will help you relax as you wait for the ceremony to start. Drink a lot of fluids to keep you well hydrated.
Have back up
Have agreements in writing
These weddings are held in the open and so the weather can be unpredictable even when you closely follow the weather focus. Have an alternative place to have the wedding just in case the weather doesn’t cooperate.
When planning for a beach wedding you should keep in mind that you may be having it in a place that is unfamiliar to the rental company, caterer, etc. Therefore any orders that you make should be signed for. This makes it easy to make claims if things are not done according to the contract.
Consult a professional Make sure the person you choose has experience working with beach weddings. The best people to choose are those who are familiar with the area, and beaches, in which the wedding will be held.
Give your guests directions The guests that you invite to your wedding should have an easy time finding the beach. Provide them with sunscreen and some refreshments to make them feel welcome to the place.
A wedding on the beach is the perfect way to have a simple and intimate ceremony within natural surroundings. With the right preparations you can make it a day to remember. Just choose the perfect beach and take into consideration any weather changes and you are set. Jason Hennessey is the President of www.1weddingsource.com. Green Weddings Invitations
Ask your stationer about green options including using tree-free, recycled and recyclable paper and vegetable oil based inks.
Out of Town Guests
Try to get your guests to carpool, and travel at non-peak traffic times.
Transportation
Have the ceremony and the reception at the same location, eliminating the need for a large group of people to travel from one place to another. If the ceremony must be in a different spot, hire a bus to bring everyone to the reception together.
Ceremony
Consider having your celebration outdoors. The Central Coast has a naturally beautiful environment; from the redwoods to the sea our coast has so many unique venue choices. Enjoy the experience of selecting your wedding site and consider the accessibility, surroundings and views when doing so.
Flowers
Try to use flowers that have been organically, locally grown and take the season into account. The Central Coast is the home for a wide variety of native flowers
8

that would make an outstanding bouquet or table arrangements.
Food
Hire a caterer who specializes in locally grown ingredients. Santa Cruz and Monterey county produce bountiful crops with a focus on organic. Consider fresh berries, a variety of lettuces, an artichoke dish, and fresh vegetables. Also consider regional, organic wines and locally brewed beer and fresh seafood.
Reception Venue
Ask your reception manager about their green policies. Many venues are up to date on reducing and recycling programs.
Wedding Party Fashions
Try to choose styles that everyone agrees they’ll want to wear again and again. Consider donating your bridal gown to a clothing charity.
Keepsakes for Guests
Give every guest a tree seedling or a packet of
wild flower seeds. You can find great ecofriendly favors for your guests on the Get Married site at www.getmarried.com
Wedding Website
Share your enthusiasm for having a green wedding with family and friends. You’ll be encouraging them to go green themselves. Every little bit of knowledge about how to help the environment helps everyone be more active about making a difference by going green!

Latin Wedding

California is known for its melding of cultures. During the 18th century many of the early families had their roots in both the Spanish/Mexican and American cultures. The tradition continues today as love brings together couples whose family traditions add to the richness of our combined heritages. This wedding brings those familiar symbols of one culture together to for a new tradition.

A
part of these symbols are the food and drink, which range from Spanish appetizers - Tapas - to traditional Jarritos - soft drinks - and wine punch known as Sangria. Centerpieces for the tables can be glass vases with pinto beans and succulents common to the deserts of California and Mexico. Another tradition is the Picado – white paper wedding flags cut into elaborate designs. Such decorations are also used as holiday decorations. Another symbol often used are figures from the tradition of Dia de los Muertos – Day of the Dead that focuses on praying for and remembering friends and family members who have died. The tradition is so popular that even weddings may use the images on the wedding cake. Milagros are Mexican folk art good luck charms that can take many forms. The bride’s bouquet of roses and succulents is wrapped with a Milagro made of fiber. Flowers are universal and are used to make any wedding a colorful and festive occasion - even when they are made of paper. Brides are always beautiful. This is the day they walk down the aisle and somehow the glow is always there as they take their place next to their life’s companion. But of course the centerpiece of any wedding are the bride and groom. They are the ones who are pledging their love and bringing together two worlds as they embark on life’s voyage together.

Western Weddings W
estern-themed weddings are more popular than ever. With invitations in the shape of cowboy boots, cowboy wedding favors, and fun costumers for all, a western wedding offers you the chance to enjoy your special day without having to take it too seriously. Brides might appear in Old West style gowns, with the groom dressed as a cowboy or sheriff. With all the new western bling you can add a flashy flare to your western wedding! Many people like to decorate their western style wedding appropriately. This might mean decorating a pickup truck with Just Married signs, instead of a new car, using gingham or calico tablecloths, and serving appetizers on tables made from bales of hay. Raffia wraps can give a rustic air to anything that might need a ribbon ordinarily. Have the bride and bridesmaids carry wildflowers instead of a formal bouquet. Some people even have the

happy couple arrive at the ceremony on horseback or horse drawn carriage! Catering your western wedding with a family style meal will add to the atmosphere. Encourage the attendees to dress in western wear to complete the feeling of getting married in the Old West. You can really get into the spirit by having a square dance caller for your entertainment and appropriate dancing at the reception. Consider holding the ceremony some place unusual as well. An old adobe church or the amazing Lone Star Ranch in Half Moon Bay which has a western church and western buildings that can be the finishing detail in your wedding. Consider themed favors too. Popular options include little potted cacti, candles, charms, and soaps shaped like cowboy hats, stars or boots, and shaped containers, like tin pails, filled with candy or other confections. Hot sauce
with custom labels, miniature horseshoes, and bandannas also all make great favors. Some couples give out engraved belt buckles. There are limitless options for favors when it comes to a western style wedding. There’s no end to the interesting and creative options you can explore with a western style wedding. Enjoy the opportunity to cut loose and express yourself with a unique themed wedding that reflects your personal style and allows everyone to have a lot of fun. It’s no wonder that western themed weddings are becoming so popular.

A relaxed and graceful outdoor bridal shower is characteristic for summer. From there, it is on to the main event. “Summer weddings are elegant and beautiful,” said Mariam Naficy, of Minted. com, an online stationery store that specializes in wedding invitations and accessories. “But elegance doesn’t come without the right amount of preparation. A Toast to the Bride and Groom A Toast to the Bride and Groom Tips and Sips for the Perfect Bridal Celebration

hether it’s an engagement party, bridal shower, the reception or post-wedding brunch—bubbles add a festive, celebratory note to any bridal celebration. I love Cupcake Prosecco sparkling wine from Italy. It’s crisp and refreshing — an affordable alternative to pricey French champagne yet equally delicious. • Food doesn’t have to be complicated to be remarkable. The finger foods here are varied and flavorful — but they’re not hard to make. To satisfy all guest preferences, I always recommend 3 to 5 appetizers including chicken, beef and fish plus two veggie options (ideally one being vegan or dairy free). • A signature drink is a fun way to welcome guests and get the party off to a great start. The Prosecco Ginger Cocktail is delicious and memorable. I like to serve it in unconventional glassware and garnish with Persian cucumber “swizzle sticks” for even more impact. • A popular alternative to the traditional sit down meal at engagement parties or showers: food stations with a range of different foods offered at each. Pair a different wine with each station to create maximum variety and enjoyment as guests taste and mingle. • Factor in overall ambiance and the vibe you want for your wedding or event. Lighting is key. And when it comes to candles, more is more. • Flavored vodka is another big trend I’m seeing right now. Look for vodkas infused with such exotic flavors as vanilla frosting, devil’s food cake and more. And don’t be afraid to mix spirits with wine: One of my favorite concoctions is a blend of lemony Cupcake Chiffon Vodka with muddled blackberries, fresh mint, sparkling grapefruit water and a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon. • It’s not only more fun to serve bitesized cupcakes at your wedding but they offer more variety and unexpected flavor combinations than a traditional cake. • Be sure to have a good assortment of non-alcoholic beverages on hand as well

Alternative Bridal Registry What is an alternative bridal registry? The alternative bridal registry developed when the traditional bridal registry did not fit the needs of couples wanting more freedom to choose their china, crystal and glassware patterns. Many couples wanted more variety than their parents had when they registered. They found the standard five- piece place setting wanting, or the patterns uninspired. They questioned the necessity for bone china that requires hand washing. What happens when you are considering a five- piece place setting (dinner plate, bread and butter, soup howl, cup and saucer) and your finger won’t fit through the cup handle or you dislike the shape of the bowl or find the bread and butter plates too small for salad or dessert? Before the alternative bridal registry, there Photo: RJ Muna
were no other options. The china industry has responded by offering some patterns as “open stock,” meaning the consumer can buy a single piece rather than the whole set. The teninch dinner plate and cup and saucer tend to be the most selected items. “Mix and match” is a new friend for the industry, in which china patterns are coordinated in the same or complementary colors and motifs that blend together. Some pieces in the place setting may match and others mix in a creative way. This relaxed approach has become popular with couples seeking a less traditional, informal style. Many couples are bringing their own china into the marriage in many forms: family heirlooms, antiques, patterns from second or third relationships, or those acquired while single or traveling. Alternative registries also combine glass soup bowls and chargers (oversized plates that go beneath the dinner plate) with china dinner plates or casual ceramic salad plates. This is where the existing china you may already own can be integrated into a casual or formal place setting. Today’s couples tend to look for dinnerware that works both in everyday and special occasion settings. Annieglass is one such collection, handmade of durable glass in Santa Cruz. It is the choice of many, and one of the original trendsetters in alternative bridal registry. Annieglass is available in

shapes and applications to complement its dinnerware that you would never find in standard china, such as baguette trays, footed cake stands, pasta bowls, chip & dip bowls, and condiment dishes. Its Roman Antique pattern, trimmed in gold and platinum, comes in over 50 shapes. Annieglass’s unique serving pieces complement its dinnerware beautifully and blend with practically every china pattern.

Creating Memories That Last
With a Photo Booth at Your Wedding 28
coastalwedding.com
Step 1: Reserve your photo booth at least three months before your wedding. Set up your photo booth at he time you are setting up the rest of your reception so it’s there ready to go on your big day. Provide a privacy screen between the seat in the booth and the rest of the guests. There are party vendors in all major cities that rent out photo booths for weddings. Some wedding photographers even offer this service as an add-on to your traditional wedding photo package.
Step 2:
Choose a location that stands out for the photo booth at your reception. It shouldn’t be in the way of anything else, though it should be set up where everyone can see it. If you have a theme wedding you may want to decorate the booth in keeping with your theme. Make sure there’s enough space in the surrounding area incase guests line up.
Step 3:
Create excitement around the photo booth by using it yourself. Announce the presence of the photo booth night to encourage all of your guests to visit.Get a few booth shots of you and your new spouse. When guests see how much fun it is, they’ll want to participate as well.
Step 4:
Place your guestbook near the photo booth. Let guests add their photos so you can keep a copy with the rest of your photos of the day. Some photo booth rental companies can set up their booths to produce two copies of the pictures. This way, guests can give you a copy and keep one for themselves.
Step 5:
Consider the young children invited to your wedding reception. Encourage your young guests to have their pictures taken as well. Keep the photo booth rental until the very end of the reception, as pictures can get more creative and funnier as the night progresses.

Wedding Reception Order of Events The reception is a time of celebration, socializing and fun for both the wedding party and their guests. It is also an opportunity for the wedding party to greet and informally thank their guests. The following list is an outline of events for most wedding receptions. Social Hour
segment of the reception.
By beginning with a social hour, you give your guests a chance to gather at the reception facility, drop off their gifts, meet, and mingle with the other guests while the wedding party’s portraits are being taken.
Receiving Line
The bridal couple can also snack at this time to free up time for them to mix and mingle with their guests during the lunch/dinner
30

The Bride and Groom then greet their guests at the entrance to the reception hall with a receiving line. This ensures that the wedding party, which includes the bridal couple, the parents, the maid of honor, the best man, and any other special guest will have the opportunity to greet each guest.
After the guests are received, the wedding party is announced by the emcee as they join the party. First introduced are the groomsmen and bridesmaids, then the flower girl and ring bearer, followed by the parents, and finally the happy couple.
The Wedding Dance
(Optional - before or after Dinner) Before dinner and right after the bride and groom have been introduced comes the first dance between the bride and groom, the father and daughter, the mother and son dance, the parents, the attendants, etc.
Toasts Before Dinner The Best Man • Maid of Honor • Father of the Groom • Father of the Bride The bride and groom can also thank their guests for coming, family members for paying, and their best friends for not telling all.
The Wedding Dinner During the dinner the bride and groom can mingle and greet their guests and have photos taken with them. It’s also a time that guests can make a speech, sing a song, or even perform a skit.
The Wedding Dance
(Optional - before or after Dinner) Traditionally the bride and groom’s first dance followed by the father daughter dance, the mother and son dance, the attendants and then the guests.
Congratulations Josh & Jasmine
Cutting the Cake The bride and groom now cut the cake. The groom gives the bride the first piece as a symbol of providing for her as the husband. Additional toasts can be made at this time.
Bride’s Bouquet and Garter Toss The bride throws her bouquet to the single women then the groom then removes her garter and launches it to the single men.
Departure of the Bridal Couple The couple is showered with one of the following: Confetti, Bubbles, Rice, or Birdseed. Photo by: Neil Simmons

Say ‘I do’
to the Season’s Trendiest Bridal Accessories F
inally found the perfect dress? Now it’s time to go from blushing bride to a fashion stand-out your family and friends will be talking about for years. Whether you prefer the classic elegance of old-Hollywood glamour or the daring innovation of the avant-garde, fashion instructors from several Art Institutes school locations share the top trends in bridal accessories that can help you achieve a one-of-a-kind look on your wedding day. Accessories can be a fun and easy way for brides to add some creativity to their style, while also showing off their personality. One way to look unique on your wedding day is through headpieces, according to Erica Sewell, Fashion Instructor at The Art Institute of New York City.
Headpieces:
Brides are trading in traditional veils in lieu of headbands, fascinators, blushers, feathers and for the daring brides, hats. Jewels and headbands, like the ones seen recently on Kim Kardashian and Alicia Keys, are another great alternative to traditional veils. Sewell is also seeing more Eastern-looking head jewelry. Tiaras are another bridal classic that are getting a makeover. They are being replaced by birdcage veils, which are short, face-framing veils that were popular in the 40s, and fascinators, like those seen during the royal wedding.
40

Jewelry:
When looking at jewelry, many brides are keeping it simple or focusing on statement pieces that can be worn again and again after the wedding is over. “Your dress you wear one time. Your accessories are for a lifetime,” says Michelle Zabel, Fashion Instructor at The Art Institute of Washington - Dulles, a branch of The Art Institute of Atlanta. “People are spending more on their accessories, because they can wear them again.” Another trend in jewelry is vintage pieces. “Brides are incorporating vintage pieces from their family,” says Michael Watson, Fashion Instructor at The Art Institute of Charlotte. These pieces are not only unique, but they also have sentimental value. And, whether vintage or new, brooches and lariats are making a return to the scene, but are being used in unexpected ways. Lariats are long chains that can be wrapped around the neck several times with the ends either hanging loosely or tied into a “y” shape. “If a bride has a dress with some back detail, some are using a lariat in reverse so the long part is hanging down the back,” says Sewell. Instead of finding brooches only on the dress, brides are now using them to accessorize their bouquets.
Feathers:
If the thought of a feathered headpiece worthy of Carrie Bradshaw’s coutureclad bride seems a little extreme for your tastes, don’t worry. Feathers are definitely
having a fashion moment, and the ways to incorporate them are endless. According to Watson, “feathers have transitioned into an inexpensive way to make your look unique.” Sewell agrees, noting that people are putting feathers on fascinators, clips, combs and veils. “Feathers are a big story as far as headgear,” she says. Headpieces aren’t the only place one can find feathers. Just like brooches, they are also turning up on wedding bouquets. “Flowers have been clean, simple, minimal and accessorized with pearls, feathers and rhinestones,” says Watson.
Shoes:
What girl doesn’t love her shoes, and for today’s bride pretty much anything goes. For something unexpected, brides can add a pop of color with their shoes or even go a little trendier with lace booties. Sewell says she is also seeing shoes in general becoming less traditional and more casual. This includes taking a fashion cue from the guys. “Some brides are wearing sneakers, such as Chuck Taylors, because the grooms are wearing sneakers,” says Sewell.
