Honorable Duties

Everything the Maid of Honor Needs to Know

B

eing chosen to be the Maid of Honor in a wedding is truly an honor. The bride usually puts a lot of thought into who she will choose as her Maid of Honor. It is usually a best friend or sister who until the wedding becomes the bride’s advisor, confidant, and all around go-to girl. Duties can include helping to select wedding colors, the caterer, flowers, reception décor, etc. The Maid of Honor also hosts a wedding shower for the bride and plans the bachelorette party. One of the toughest tasks for the maid of honor is keeping the bride calm. When major decision is being made you can be there as a sounding board in case the bride is having a tough time deciding on something. There is also the responsibility of keeping the bride calm the day of the wedding when nerves and anxiety will be at their peak. Your calm demeanor will help the bride to stay focused on her day so she can relax and not worry. Temper tantrums, screaming at the florist, etc. can set the wrong mood for the whole day. This position of honor can be loaded with a lot of work and responsibility as well as a lot of fun. Maid-of-honor duties can include shopping with the bride, arranging transportation for the bridal party, communicating plans and responsibilities to the bridal party, and helping to select and send out invitations. Signing the marriage license along with the best man, participating in the first dance with the best man, holding the groom’s ring during the ceremony, holding the bride’s bouquet during the ceremony are more of your official duties for the special day. And don’t forget the important task of being there for the bride before she walks down the aisle. She will need you to help adjust the train on her dress, her veil, possibly help with making sure there is no mascara runs if there are tears.

The Maid of Honor is a crucial person in the wedding party. The bride looks to you for almost every decision she has to make. Yes, it is a big job but with focus and calm, you can help to make this day a memorable one for all involved. Photos by: Neil Simmons

Succulents Will Last

Wedding memories that will grow and endure for years

H

ave you considered as an addition or combination to your wedding’s corsages, bouquets and centerpieces the use of succulents? The combination of bright

florals and exotic succulents just might be the answer to expressing your wedding’s theme. After traditional floral arrangements begin to wilt in 3-5 days, the succulents used in your flower arrangements will continue to last. Bouquets made of succulents can be made up to two weeks ahead of time and still last for weeks after your ceremony. In addition, they can be planted and enjoyed for years to come. With succulents, it is no longer necessary to be rushing around to pick up arrangements or wondering if your floral delivery will arrive on time. Succulents require far less care than most plants and can survive for weeks without water. After the wedding, they would make a good selection for a low maintenance ornamental garden and would also do well indoors potted in a sunny location.

8

The use of succulents and dried accents is an attractive solution to creating memories of your wedding and providing an interesting alternative to using just cut flowers for your floral designs.

Many of these succulent bouquets and arrangements can be created with reusable and/or biodegradable materials that can be planted and enjoyed for years to come, or composted after use.

Two of the Most Exciting Colors of 2013 In all its hues, Green is the wedding color of the year.

T

he sophisticated and luxurious color emerald is associated with the mystique of brilliant, precious gemstones and exotic jewelry. Since ancient times, this luminous and magnificent hue has been seen as the color of extravagant beauty and new life for many cultures and religions. It is also perceived as the color of growth, renewal, prosperity, and regeneration. As green is the most abundant hue in nature, the human eye sees more hues and values of green than any other color in the spectrum. Throughout human history, emerald green continues to fascinate. As a symbol of renewal and rejuvenation, in today’s world the universally appealing tone of Emerald is increasingly found in fashion and home interiors. Other greens such as a grayed jade, or a subtle moss green with a gray undertone, can give a feeling of elegance and natural beauty to your wedding. Both poppy red and emerald green pair beautifully with so many colors. Your evening

wedding can become very elegant when gold is incorporated into the reception. Table linens, favors, and gold accents can turn your reception into a magical experience for all! White is a classic accompaniment to any color it is paired with. A bouquet of red and white flowers with green accents is a perfect way to complete the look of your wedding party. Flowers in different shades of red or green can complement the theme when they are set as centerpieces. There are endless possibilities when thinking about accessorizing in emerald green and poppy red. Hair accents, jewelry, ribbon, you can also get clip on jewel accents for your shoes. Or be bold and wear red or green shoes with your wedding gown! Your groom can wear a poppy red or emerald cummerbund if he is wearing a tuxedo. He can also wear a red or green tie or bowtie if the wedding is a little more casual.

For that Extra “Pop” - Try Poppy Red

When deciding colors for your wedding, step out of your box! Sometimes pairing colors that you don’t think will look good together end up being the perfect combination for you!

In Persian literature, red poppies, especially red corn poppy flowers, are considered the flower of love. They are often called the eternal lover flower. Poppy red is a seductive, sensual and celebratory shade that brings a sudden “pop” of color to your wedding. It creates an energetic atmosphere that will leave a lasting impression for your guests!

Wedding Banquet on the Go Gourmet Catering Trucks Make Weddings More Mobile

I

f you want your wedding reception to take place somewhere off the beaten path or at a residence that doesn’t have the facilities for easy catering, consider a gourmet catering truck! The catering truck is fast becoming a favorite of the wedding world with mobile, quick service catering and a fun way of doing your reception differently and often at a cost savings. Couples considering hiring a caterer with a food truck for their reception should think about if it fits the style and/or theme of their wedding.

Using a food truck at a your wedding can also save lots of money compared to standard catering services and solve planning problems for venues without major kitchen facilities – by putting the kitchen on wheels! Obviously, this allows an almost infinite variety of meal venues from outdoor informal picnics to intimate folded-napkins-and-silver-

ware formal outdoor or even indoor dinners. Depending on the caterer’s truck selections, the choice of cuisine can run from a simple menu of hamburgers or tacos to more formal offerings such as rib eye, barbecue, or even cordon bleu. Many catering truck operators offer exotic and unique menus to make that special day memorable for the couple and their guests. No matter what you’ve got a taste for, there’s sure to be a food truck to satisfy even the most finicky of palettes. Many caterers today offer the choice of traditional catering or the option of serving directly from the catering truck. For some of your guests, it may be the first time they’ve had the food truck experience. Why not let them experience something new and different? Just another way for them to

always remember the wonderful time they had at your wedding! Gourmet catering trucks work really well at outdoor settings such as in a park, beach, or private residence. A favorite wedding trend is the idea of having a food truck show up late night at your venue or your after party spot to feed guest as they start to get hungry again after all that celebrating. Be adventurous! Find that perfect place for your wedding and reception having the flexibility of knowing that wherever it is, the catering truck will be there to serve you, your guests, and helping to make those memories of a lifetime.

You’re Engaged!

Plan the Perfect Celebration The happy couple has decided to get married and now it is time to announce your nuptials to friends and family. Here a few ideas to get you started.

T

he engagement party is usually held soon after the couple announces their engagement and is traditionally hosted by the bride’s parents. What kind of party should you have? It’s your decision — an engagement party can be anything from a fancy cocktail soiree to a laid-back backyard barbecue. However, if you’re hosting a party that the bride and the groom’s parents will be attending, think about what kind of event will make both families most

18

coastalwedding.com

comfortable, since the engagement party is traditionally considered an opportunity to let the couple’s families get to know each other. If your families already have a relationship, have the party somewhere where both parties are comfortable with the surroundings. When it comes to creating the guest list remember to only invite people who will be invited to the wedding. If you haven’t set up your wedding list yet, you might want to keep your party just family in order to avoid hurt feelings among friends in the future. It could cause an uncomfortable situation if a friend of yours is invited to the engagement party and not to the wedding. And don’t invite anyone other than the couple’s parents who will have to travel,

since they’ll already be expected to travel for the ceremony itself. There are no rules on types of engagement parties. It can be anywhere from a home to a BBQ on the beach. When planning, think about the type of guests you will be inviting. If there are going to be grandparents or great grandparents, a beach party might not be the best idea. Try to have your party at a location that will be suitable for all invited. To start planning the party write down everything you will be buying: the invitations, the food, the drinks, the entertainment, and the decor; and come up with a realistic estimate of what you will spend. Keep in mind that some of the nicest engagement parties can be laid-back at home

affairs. Another way to save on the party is to make it a “just desserts” party or serve only cocktails and appetizers. If you go this route, set the party at a time of day when the guests won’t be expecting a full dinner. If you’re having an at-home party, consider making it a potluck and inviting each guest to bring a dish. If it’s a small party and you will be serving dinner, a buffet is the easy way to go. You can also hire a caterer to cook and bring in the food. To save money, you can have the caterer drop off the food and you can get younger family members to help serve it. Entertainment is not a must at an engagement party but it certainly is welcome. You can hire a pianist to play quietly in the background, or to save money and make it more personal, you can create your own playlist of songs that are special to the bride and groom. Gift giving is not mandatory at an engagement party. You can put something on the invitation noting that gifts are not necessary. Some people might bring one anyway so try to have a spot set up for unexpected gifts.

Don’t stress over the last minute details! Check your list, make sure all is done. And then have some fun! Remember this is a celebration for the happy couple; everyone at the party will be focused on them. The beautiful setting and décor is an added plus!

Braids Are Big This Bridal Season

R

emember sitting at your mother’s knee as a girl while she braided your hair? Those were special moments for all of us. In those days, to our mothers the braids were mostly to keep our hair out of our eyes. But to us little girls, braids were the best hairstyle ever! We would go to school, braids flying, with just a little more confidence that day because we knew we looked really cool with our braids. With the new rage for brides being braided hairstyles, you can recreate that feeling you had as a little girl when your hair was braided. Used to be that wearing a braided hairstyle was only for the bohemian bride, nowadays, soft, glamorous braided hairstyles are being embraced by classic and modern brides alike! And despite the fact that some people still consider

22

coastalwedding.com

braids to be an everyday look, they can easily be adapted for a formal occasion. Braided hairstyles have become the new rage for weddings. Soft, romantic braided wedding hairstyles for long hair or incorporating hair extensions have become very popular. Intertwining three or more strands of hair forms a braid. The traditional braid is of three stands forming long and narrow structures, which then can be intertwined for designs that are more modern. Complex braids can be also constructed from a larger number of strands to create wide ribbon-like bands, hollow or solid cylindrical cords, or broad mats. A bride’s hairstyle using braids can be her unique statement of personality and beauty on this, her special day.

How to Create a Halo Braid

D

etangle the hair with a wide toothed comb. Braids last longer when the hair is slightly damp. Dry hair can be slippery and hair that is too wet can become too tight as it dries. You can use a spray bottle or towel to dry clean hair. To help hair stay, spread a little mousse or hair gel from the roots through the ends so your braid hair style stays put. Part the hair from ear to ear over the top of the head. This will divide the front hair from the back hair and keep your braid centered. This hair braid can be braided inside out (Dutch style) or French style, depending on the look you want. Begin the hair braid at the top of the head, and as you pull each section, make sure that it enters the braid on the outside. This will take some practice, since a traditional French braid has new sections of hair entering from both sides. It’s like learning how to braid all over again. This braid hair style is worth it, though. Keep practicing. Braid in the back section of hair just as you did the top, pulling new sections of hair into the outside layer of the braid. Pay attention to your tension and take sections large enough to keep the braid laying flat. You can fix small mistakes with a crochet hook, bobby pin or hair pin.

hoffmans:Layout 1 1/4/12 4:11 and PM back Page to 1 the front section and continue to braid hair all the way to the ends. Work all the way around the head Tuck the tail into the underside of the halo and secure it by weaving with a crochet hook or securing it with bobby pins. You can also weave a string of beads or flowers in at this point, too.

hoosing your wedding dress can be intimidating, especially if you are a plus-size bride. But there are all kinds of ideas that can help you accentuate your best features no matter what size you are. Undergarments will have a huge impact on how your dress is going to fit. A corset is a good addition to any strapless dress. It will help to smooth and cinch everything into place. There are all kinds of shapewear on the market these days for all kinds of bodies. Once you know what style your dress will be, you can shop for the proper shapewear to wear underneath it. Most bridal shops also carry the undergarments that will go with the dress you choose. Just remember—it is important to feel comfortable. This is your day and you don’t want to remember in years to come that you spent all day at your wedding fiddling with your undergarments! Certain dress styles look better on certain shapes. If you’re a pear shape, meaning your lower half is wider than your upper, consider the camouflaging power of a princess gown that flares gently into an A-line silhouette. For this shape empire waist dresses can be complimentary also. A popular trend this year is the beaded bodice paired with a smooth, undecorated skirt. This is perfect for a pear as it draws the eye upward. Apple shapes look best in wedding dresses that minimize the bust as this body type is bigger on top than on bottom. Details like ruching, pleating, and tiers below the waist visually maximize the lower half and create the illusion of a trimmer waistline. Try to avoid any kind of slinky fabric as it shows all! Mermaid and trumpet wedding gowns suit “hourglass” frames the best, as they accentuate all the best things about that figure type. These are the gowns that are snug all the way down to the knee and then complete the look with a wide flare.

Believe it or not, the right shoe can also have impact on your overall appearance in your wedding gown. Peep-toe pumps with a short chunky heel are great as they elongate your legs and also show off your pedicure! Another trick to lengthen the leg is to wear a pointedtoe shoe. The tapered point of the shoe will make your legs look longer. If heels aren’t an option, go for flat pumps. You can buy jewels to clip on the flats to match your jewelry or even the bridesmaid dresses! When deciding how you’ll wear your hair, don’t forget to take into consideration the style of your dress. If you’re wearing a strapless gown with a beautiful neckline, you may want to wear your hair up to show off that part of your dress! Also, wearing your hair off your neck helps to create a longer neckline and torso. For simpler gowns that are breezy and flowing, a complimentary hair style would be to wear it down and add a few curls to complete the look. Jewelry is an important asset to any look. A beautiful necklace (not too long or chunky) will draw the eye to your beautiful neckline. If you don’t want to bring attention to your arms, don’t wear big bracelets. Wear a pair of beautiful classic earrings and then your guests will not only notice your beautiful jewelry but also your beautiful hair and make-up! If there are certain parts of your body you are self conscious about, there is bound to be an accessory out there to help you hide whatever it is. The people at the bridal shop are pros; if you tell them what you would like to hide they can definitely find you the perfect dress of your dreams! No matter the body shape, the perfect wedding dress and accessories are out there waiting for you. Do your research, ask questions, and your dream wedding dress will come to you!

Who Pays for What? Bringing up a discussion about who will pay for what in the wedding might be an awkward thing to do. It is, however, a topic that must be discussed lest you get stuck with all costs.

H

istorically, the bride and/or her family have assumed the majority of the wedding related expense.

The more modern approach allows for division of costs between the couple and/or both sets of parents. Nowadays, with the cost of weddings growing and many couples marrying later when they are more likely to have careers and incomes of their own, more brides and grooms are contributing to, or even picking up entirely, the cost of the wedding. And the parents of many grooms are also contributing more than in the past. A popular option is to have the bride’s family, the groom’s family, and the couple each contribute one third. Following are some of the more traditional guidelines that you can adopt or modify to suit your particular needs. The itemization also provides a checklist of matters that may require attention in your wedding preparations.

[Note: Usually, the attendants will pay for their attire. If not, the bride will assume the expense of her attendants and the groom for his.] 28

The Song Sets the Tone Choosing wedding music can be a daunting task. The bride and groom may have different musical tastes. There are the guests to consider, and the venue itself may have special considerations. The choices are endless, it just takes some time and focus to figure out what will be perfect for your wedding!

T

hese days, there are really no rules on which music should be played at a wedding. Some couples like the traditional “Here Comes the Bride”, and others want to dance down the aisle to the newest hip hop song! That being said, you can choose anything you want. If the couple has a song that means a lot to them they can use it either to walk down the aisle of as the introductory song into the reception. Typically the music played at a wedding is related to the venue in which the wedding will take place. If you are having a beach wedding, you may want to play tropical music throughout the reception. A church wedding might call for tradition. Always check with the venue to make sure what is allowed and what is not. If you are having your wedding in a western setting, there might be a country love song that means a lot to the couple for their special walk. At the reception you might want to play some

country songs that will start a line dancing group and get the crowd going! If you don’t want to choose individual songs for your ceremony or reception, experienced wedding musicians and DJs will be able to play appropriate songs in the right places. But picking out your own music for specific moments can be more meaningful and satisfying. If you choose to take a more active role in the music for your wedding, the list of considerations can be quite long. Having a DJ is nice because you can request anything you want, from Frank Sinatra to the latest rock group. The cost is based on how long you have the DJ play at the reception. They will come in, set up their own space, and most will double as an emcee at the reception. They will announce certain dances and events during the reception, i.e., first dance, father daughter dance, cake cutting, etc. If you’re looking for a more elegant reception or if the reception hall is too small for dancing, you can hire a trio or quartet. They usually play music that is more for listening then dancing. Sometimes when the wedding guests are older, or the reception is quite small, this is the way to go. Remember to consider your guests in addition to theme, style, and setting. Choose music that each age group is likely to recognize and enjoy. Not all can be accommodated, but an experienced DJ or band will be able to read the crowd and fill in the gaps accordingly.

Some Favorite Wedding Songs for 2013: At Last (Etta James) Dancing in the Moonlight (King Harvest) Everything (Michael Bublé) Brown Eyed Girl (Van Morrison) Paradise (Coldplay) Love Story (Taylor Swift) Better Together (Jack Johnson) A Moment Like This (Kelly Clarkson) Marry You (Bruno Mars) Come Away with Me (Nora Jones) Make You Feel My Love (Adele) You and Me (Dave Matthews) The Way you Look Tonight (Frank Sinatra) Then (Brad Paisley) Just a Kiss (Lady Antebellum) I Do (Colbie Caillat) Wonderful Tonight (Eric Clapton) coastalwedding.com

Create a Dazzling Cocktail Party in 10 Minutes! Most of us do not have the time to do what matters most. Gathering friends and family into our homes may be another item on our wish list. With the help of local tableware designer Annie Morhauser of Annieglass even the busiest couple can use these shortcuts to connect with loved ones before and after the Big Day. Q: How can I entertain with my busy life? I don’t have time for it with my schedule. A: Take as many shortcuts as possible. For instance: Make one or two dishes, and supplement the menu with prepared foods from a deli or caterer like cooked ham, roasted chicken, vegetable/ fruit tray, or desserts from a bakery. Buy prearranged bouquets, or potted flowering plants like mums or orchids. Set up a self-serve bar and let your guests mix their own drinks. If you can, employ someone to set up, clean up and replenish the food and drinks. Q: How should I set up the food? A: Place the food separate from the drinks with an eye to space. People will congregate around both, so make sure there is enough room. I recommend setting the table the way you would compose a flower arrangement, with a variety of shapes, colors and textures. Annieglass makes a range of unique unusual pieces to spark your creativity. Here are some suggestions:  Fill compartmented trays (3, 4, 5 or 6) with crudités like cherry tomatoes, baby carrots, broccoli flowerets, marinated roasted peppers or pepperoncini.  Serve cooked shrimp on a bed of crushed ice or around the rim of a chip and dip bowl and offer cocktail or dipping sauce in the smaller compartment.  Try green and red salsa in a compartmented dish, three types of olives in a three part tray.  Set out canapés or cookies on a large square plate or several small square plates.  A wedge of cheese and cluster of grapes on a footed cake stand or oval platter.  Cut a cake into wedges and present on a salmon platter in a serpentine pattern  Keep the soft cheeses or nuts in small bowls and the crackers or sliced bread in a baguette tray or small oval dishes  Serve rolls or sliced bread for sandwiches on a rectangular tray. Q: What should I do for lighting? A: I recommend candlelight; everybody looks good in it! Use a row of gold or silver edged votives down the center of the table. Twist a velvet runner or scarf into a sinuous shape down the table and tuck the votives on either side. Floating candles and flowers in a large bowl is another gorgeous (and very romantic) way to light a table.

Second Wedding?

When you are a mature bride and groom, the sky is the limit!

M

ost girls grow up dreaming of having a fairy tale wedding when the time comes. These dreams include a big white wedding dress, plenty of bridesmaids, and a wedding fit for a princess. Most of the time, their fairy tale dreams come true and the bride gets the wedding she has always dreamed of. Mature brides—whether it be her first or second wedding—have different dreams. Their dreams include smaller venues, smaller guest list, and less pomp and circumstance. Second time brides have “been there, done that” and want to make their second time more about the occasion rather than the glitz. Tradition is usually banished and the bride and groom create their own traditions through their own life experiences. Mature brides prefer to have small personal weddings (usually 100 or less) and most don’t even carry bouquets! There is a wide array of wedding dresses designed for the mature bride. Most are knee length and much simpler than a traditional wedding dress. White is definitely acceptable for the mature bride, most choose to wear an off white shade, such as beige or ecru. There are no rules for second weddings, if you want to wear a colorful wedding dress, go for it! As for a veil, some brides just wear a simple birdcage veil or put a pretty jewel comb in their hair. Flowers in the hair are also a lovely alternative. The best thing about planning a wedding for a mature bride and groom is that you can do whatever you want. Wedding cake? How about an individual wedding cupcakes for each guest? This idea throws out the tradition of cutting a cake and smashing it into each other’s faces. The bride and groom can make

their wedding more personal by passing out the cupcakes themselves. Depending on the wedding venue, there doesn’t even have to be a bridal table. The bride and groom can sit wherever they want and spend quality time with their guests. As far as being walked down the aisle, you can have anyone you want walk you down or you can walk alone. Children of any age can walk their mother down the aisle. This shows your guests that you and your groom have combined families into one unit. Destination weddings are popular with mature couples. When you are younger, a destination wedding is great except that a lot of your wedding party and/or guests may not be able to afford the cost to travel to the wedding, get a hotel room, etc. When you are a more mature bride and groom, your guests are probably in a better position to afford this type of wedding. You can plan the whole wedding around your destination. Tropical places are great for beach weddings, the sunsets are spectacular. If you want something more classic, look at aquariums or museums. Those buildings are usually architecturally appealing and can make for a more elegant wedding. Your guests will love anywhere you select on the central coast to have your ceremony. They may even make plans to stay on for a vacation after you have departed for your honeymoon! When you are a mature bride and groom, the sky is the limit! You have an advantage over younger brides; you have the life experience and confidence to create a beautiful wedding designed by you and your new groom!

The Perfect Venue

Central Coast Locations for Exchanging Vows Choosing the location for your wedding should be as effortless as a magic slipper’s perfect fit. In a sense, finding the site you love is akin to finding your soul mate. You’ll know it when you see it. On the Central Coast, brides and grooms have an abundance of choices when it comes to locations for exchanging vows and celebrating the commitment of marriage with friends and family. From fragrant redwood forests to scenic ocean bluffs, to lush gardens or rolling vineyards, the Central Coast offers extensive choices for the party of a lifetime.

B

efore you commit to one venue, determine the size of your guest list. This information will help you focus your search on locations big enough to accommodate your needs. Many wedding planning professionals recommend reserving your venue as far in advance as possible. June - September are the most popular wedding months and venues book quickly. If you have your heart set on one particular site, but the Saturday you want is booked, consider a Friday or Sunday ceremony. Make time to tour various sites and ask for references. What better resource than couples who have gone before you? Also, inquire about permits for ceremonies or parties on public property such as state beaches or parks. County government offices can usually provide this information. You can also base your wedding venue on a theme such as a western wedding at Long Branch Saloon and Farms or a Latino wedding at a local mission, a beach wedding with petals in the sand, the central coast has it all. A formal wedding at a beautiful resort or informal such as a wedding located in a redwood grove. Put your signature on it, make it your own, and remember to have fun! A wedding on the Central Coast is an event that will be an experience to remember for the rest of your lives. For more information or ideas on Central Coast wedding locations, visit
