Holiday Adventures for Families

Most kids start looking forward to their school holiday break a lot earlier than their parents. In between when their breaks starts and you celebrate the holiday is a long time to have nothing to do but think about what Santa is going to bring or what’s going to be in those Hanukkah gifts! Keeping kids busy during holiday break can definitely be a challenge, especially when you are running around trying to catch up on shopping. There are plenty of fun things to do during this time with the kids and their friends.

Christmas Tree Hunting

Yes, it is so much easier to go to a Christmas Tree lot and pick one out. Just point, pay, and they will carry it out and tie it on your car for you. But….it is more fun and fulfilling to go to a Christmas tree farm with your trusty axe, rubber boots, and warm jackets and hike around those Santa Cruz mountains looking for that perfect tree. The kids will have a blast running from tree to tree looking for the one they love. Make a day of it. Most Christmas tree farms not only offer the perfect tree, but almost always they also have hot chocolate, hot cider, and a few activities to keep everyone in the spirit of the holiday.

Start a Tradition

Baking Holiday cookies is always a fun activity for parents and kids alike. A really fun activity for your kids and their friends is to host a Cookie Exchange. Send out invitations to your kids’ friends’ and their parents and have each bring 2-3 dozen homemade cookies of their holiday choice, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and an empty container to take cookies home. Once the day arrives have your guests put their cookies

on the table. After the kids and parents have played a few holiday games each guest and their child or children walk around the table and choose 2-3 cookies from the various trays. How many cookies get chosen is decided by the size of the party. Such fun!

Make Gingerbread Houses

Let your kids invite some friends over and they can go to town creating and decorating gingerbread houses. Graham crackers make great walls and a roof. Use icing as the glue to hold it all together. Once your structure is set up you can use the icing as decoration (red and green food coloring comes in handy!). Put out bowls of different candies, i.e., jelly drops, licorice, Skittles, M and M’s, etc., and let the kids go crazy! Each child will have their own unique house that they can admire and eat later!

Take a Drive and Visit the Neighborhood Holiday Lights.

Some people love to decorate so much that they layer their house and yard with thousands of Christmas lights, statues, and moving snowmen, Santa, reindeer, etc. As you drive past each building strewn with holiday lights the ohhs and ahhs just get louder and louder as the excitement of Christmas really sets in. Sometimes the local newspaper will feature a map of lighted homes throughout the area.

Ornaments

Nothing says home like homemade ornaments on the tree. Some dried macaroni, yarn, beads, popsicle sticks, buttons, and paint and you’ve got enough supplies to make a variety of ornaments. Don’t forget to take your Sharpie and mark who made the ornament and the year on the back!

BONUS NIGHTS

MONDAY-TUESDAY

DECEMBER 23 & 24

Heritage Holiday Craft & Gift Fair

Dec 6 & 7 - Noon to 9pm With Holiday Lights Walk Thru Each Evening

Mount Madonna School presents “The Little Mermaid Jr.” Onstage

Performances are December 14&15 at 2:00pm at Mount Madonna School’s Hawks’ Nest Theater. Tickets on sale at MMS – the little mermaid.brownpapertickets.com.

Adult tickets are $20; seniors are $15 and $10 for 18 and under; all seats are reserved. This production is designed for children and families of all ages.

The seaweed is always greener in somebody else’s ocean... or is it? This idea resonates deeply in Disney’s “The Little Mermaid Jr.,” a tale that explores the longing for a different life, the struggle to accept one’s circumstances and the pursuit of curiosity.

Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories, “The Little Mermaid Jr.” – as embodied on stage by Mount Madonna School’s (MMS) middle school cast – is an enchanting look at the sacrifices we all make for love and acceptance.

In a magical underwater kingdom, a young mermaid, Ariel, longs to leave her ocean home – and her fins – behind and live in the world above. But first, she’ll have to defy her father, King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, and convince the human Prince Eric that she’s the girl whose enchanting voice he’s been seeking.

“For middle school students, this period often marks the emergence of identity questions and the drive to carve out their unique paths,” observed Director Chelsea Otterness.

“The story is infused with a lively, playful energy, both above the waves and beneath them. Picture sparkling mermaids and squawking gulls, bringing humor to the narrative, while

a more profound message quietly unfolds. Ariel sacrifices her voice – her means of self-expression – in exchange for legs, something she wasn’t born with. This essential loss signifies the cost of exploring new worlds, and illustrates that in the quest for more, we may lose a part of ourselves.”

“At the middle school level, students are expected to begin to face and adjust to the consequences of their decisions more than when they were younger,” commented Music Director Holly Ota. “It is an important bridge toward the reality of taking responsibility for the choices they will make as young adults. We might learn from this, in true, ‘Disney happy conclusion’ fashion, that even when our decisions take us down unexpected, tricky paths, there is hope for things to work out when we keep our minds and hearts open.”

Mount Madonna School has a long-standing tradition of performing arts for students, preschool through high school; and beyond outstanding performances, engaging in performing arts prepares students for life well beyond the stage.

Disney’s “The Little Mermaid Jr.” is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.MTIShows.com.

History of the Nutcracker; The Nutcracker, Russian Shchelkunchik, ballet by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. The last of his three ballets, it was first performed in December 1892.

The story of The Nutcracker is loosely based on the E.T.A. Hoffmann fantasy story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, about a girl who befriends a nutcracker that comes to life on Christmas Eve and wages a battle against the evil Mouse King. Hoffmann’s story is darker and more troubling than the version that reached the stage; the Imperial Russian Ballet choreographer Marius Petipa chose to follow a light adaptation of the story written by Alexandre Dumas père.

History of the Nutcracker in Santa Cruz

The Nutcracker was first performed in Santa Cruz in 1988 with Santa Cruz City Ballet Director, Shannon Chipman as the Snow Queen and Co-Director, Vicki Bergland as CoDirector on the old Cabrillo stage. They have since worked on many Nutcrackers together and this is their 17th year together with the Santa Cruz City Ballet @ IAD.

Every year the production grows with new ideas, choreography, scenery, costumes and imagination. Dancers in the Company, professionals from the bay area and continued on page 34 ...

Dining Out LOCALLY

Gather With Friends for Holiday Wine Pairings

There are so many types of wines, sometimes it is a challenge to figure out what wine goes with which food. This guide can help you choose the perfect varietal for your meal, so you don’t end up wandering the wine aisles in a state of confusion.

Turkey is a favorite at any holiday dinner. Many people assume that white wine is an automatic pairing, but it’s best to pair turkey with a fruity, lighter bodied red wine. Here are a couple that will bring out the best in your holiday turkey dinner:

Pinot Noir – The lightest bodied of all the red wine varietals, the silky mouth feel of this wine and the wonderful earthiness will make you want to follow every bite with a sip.

Beaujolais – This southern Burgundy varietal is a classic turkey pairing. The high acid will help cut through the richness of your side dishes, while the low tannins won’t overpower the delicate white meat.

Ham is a Christmas dinner classic. Hams usually need a sweetness to them to balance out the saltiness of the meat. Generally white wines are best with a good ham.

Riesling – A good Riesling is the perfect accompaniment to ham, especially if it’s smoked. The minerality and brightness will help it stand out against all the complex side dishes.

Chardonnay – A good chardonnay with little-to-no oak will be an excellent pairing with your ham. The full bodied, well rounded wine will not be overpowered even by rich side dishes.

Many people opt for red meat on their holiday table, usually a beef rib roast. Beef nearly always needs a big red wine to stand up to its richness, and typical holiday preparations tend to make this even more true.

Syrah – Syrah is a big red varietal from the Rhone valley in France. Its red and black fruit flavors make it a classic beef pairing. Any good Syrah will make a great beef pairing at your holiday meal.

Sangiovese – Sometimes also called Brunello, Sangiovese is a varietal that can do great things on your table. This wonderful Italian wine has strong notes of red fruit and hints of leather and tobacco. Cabernet Sauvignon – Usually the biggest and boldest red wine, cabs have a high tannin content that makes them the most typical red meat pairing. You should open the bottles an hour or so before serving to let the wine breathe a little.

Don’t forget the dessert wines. The secret of serving dessert wine is that it should be sweeter than the dessert and should match the flavor intensity. If the dessert is delicate or fruity, serve a Muscat, which should be chilled before serving. A heavy chocolate dessert, such as a torte, will do well with a port or Madeira wine.

Makai Island Kitchen & Groggery

Walk far enough out on the Santa Cruz Wharf and the land falls away, replaced by a sense of ocean and sky in all directions. On the wharf’s lower decks, sea lions bask in the sun and bellow contentedly at one another. Seagulls wheel in the sky or hop along the wharf railing, pestering meditative fishermen. To the west, surfers ride the glistening waves of world-famous Steamer Lane like an impossibly beautiful dream. It is out here, near the last bend in the wharf, that you will find Makai Island Kitchen & Groggery, Voted Best Restaurant on the Wharf, Best Outdoor Dining and Best Craft Cocktails in Santa Cruz, Sentinel Readers Choice, 2021.

Entering Makai is like being hit with a warm wave of pure tiki before swimming out into its ocean. It is a place of island melodies and intoxicating aromas. Tiki statues silently grin and howl from every nook and cranny. Plus, the bar rotates, making it arguably the coolest place to get a drink in the whole Monterey Bay region.

If you really need a vacation, but only have a few hours, we invite you to escape to Makai Island Kitchen & Groggery, the fully immersive tiki restaurant and bar on the Santa Cruz Wharf.

Riva Fish House On the Santa Cruz Wharf

In 1981 we started with the idea of having the best fish market on the West Coast. We were on our way but a year or so later one of our regulars asked if we’d put some of our Bay Shrimp in a cup for him, which we did, and he dumped some red sauce on it. Actually, it looked pretty good.

That was the end of something, and the beginning of something else. We named our new restaurant in honor of a little fishing village on the Ligurian Coast of Italy: Riva Trigoso. It had been home for a number of early Italian immigrants who settled in Santa Cruz and worked on the Wharf.

Voted Santa Cruz’s Best Restaurant and Best Seafood Restaurant, we offer something for everyone. Try our chowder, acclaimed fried-calamari, fish tacos, broiled oysters, fried zucchini, or killer crab melt featuring juicy tasty crab, seasoned to perfection, served on sourdough bread hand-made and baked to Riva’s exacting specifications, with cheese of your choice. Good for body and mind! Wash that down with a craft beer or handmade cocktail. Complete your experience with some of our 12 flavors of delicious, creamy gelato.

Trestles Cavalletta

Nick Sherman Nick Sherman & Shawn Ryberg

Established in 2021, Trestles Restaurant, takes its name from its location, steps away from the iconic Capitola Trestle. Our philosophy is simple: using proper technique, stay committed to using local, fresh, ingredients to create seasonal fare that people will come back for.

Trestles represents the lifelong dream of Chef Nick Sherman to open his very own restaurant. Chef Nick is extremely grateful to his countless friends and family who have helped him tirelessly to realize this dream. Nick Sherman’s passion for food began at an early age.

It was his first job bussing tables at Hollins House Restaurant at the Pasatiempo Country Club in Santa Cruz, CA that cemented his attraction to restaurants. “I was drawn to the fast paced environment, and the respect that the kitchen had. I’m not the kind of person that can sit behind a desk, so I decided to give it a shot,” says Sherman.

He enrolled in the Napa Valley Cooking School and upon graduation, earned a job on the line at Redd, which led to a rich career working in some of Wine Country’s most esteemed restaurants. Most recently, Sherman served as Executive Chef at Napa’s Basalt Restaurant. Combined with his years spent at such Wine Country mainstays as The Farm at Carneros Resort, Redd, Saint Francis Winery, El Dorado Kitchen, and Martini House, Sherman is well-equipped with a deep understanding of the pristine local product, along with varied techniques and inspiration with which to approach it.

We sincerely hope you’ll feel the love and hard work that went into these walls and look forward to serving you!

Both coming from humble beginnings in the restaurant industry, Chefs Nick Sherman and Shawn Ryberg have teamed up to create a restaurant that marries the traditional flavors of Italy with the seasonal offerings of coastal California. From this concept, Cavalletta was born, serving elevated Italian inspired fare in a laid back and inviting environment.

From a young age, Nick Sherman, current owner of Trestles in Capitola, had a passion for the culinary industry. To further his skills, he gained additional experience in Vail, Colorado and then Basalt in Napa Valley before returning home to Santa Cruz in 2020 to fulfill a lifelong dream of opening his own restaurant and bringing his culinary expertise back to the community he grew up in.

Born and raised in Cape Cod, Chef Shawn Ryberg has spent the last 20 years in Hawaii as Head Chef at the iconic Haleiwa Joes. There he oversaw the creation of the restaurants colorful and delicious dishes using the islands fresh, local ingredients. Last June, he moved back to the mainland and teamed up with Nick to bring Cavalletta to life.

At Cavalletta, we believe that seasonally fresh and locally sourced ingredients make all the difference. We are proud to use local farmers, fisherman and butchers in our operations and our chefs can be found foraging mushrooms or fishing in the harbor themselves to give our guests the best of what coastal California has to offer. All of our pastas and sauces are made in house using simple ingredients. Our wood fired pizzas are made using traditional technique, which produces a thin and airy crust with a slightly charred bottom.

Our chef-driven menu features only the freshest, locally-sourced ingredients, bringing farm-totable dining to a whole new level.
