Making a difference this holiday season by Shopping & Dining Local

Remember the joy of going from store to store to find that perfect gift? Somehow many of us have gotten caught up in the supposed convenience of shopping for the lowest price at some mega-store or on their website. But have you ever had to take or send something back that did not fit ... or didn’t work ... or maybe just disappeared and never arrived?

Shopping local is the way to go.

These days, local businesses need the boost from the local community to keep up their mojo going. Our local businesses are looking forward to selling their wares to “their people”! Get up and go to a locally owned and operated store or business that has real live people providing real live service. Local businesses where you can try on or turn on or try out their products and then take them back to return or replace without having to wait forever for your refund.

And, if you prefer to shop on the Internet, more and more of our many of our locally owned and operated businesses have websites that you can purchase goods and services from. This provides the opportunity to deal both online and inperson with people who are your neighbors and live in your community and boost our local economy.

Each day we see and hear the ever-present ads of national chains, but we don’t hear and see the many important values independent locally owned businesses provide us both as an

individual and as a community. New “big box” retailers that replace locally owned businesses often create economic costs exceeding benefits: the loss of existing jobs and the cost of an increased infrastructure being the top two.

When asked to name our favorite restaurant, cafe, or shop, we almost always cite a unique local business. We say we embrace the idea of distinctive businesses with local character, but then often forget their survival depends on our patronage so let’s so up for them.

Those who raise funds for local non-profits can tell you that locally owned businesses provide most of their support. Not all local businesses are perfect, and “big box” retailers are not bad, but the overall impact is obvious: local businesses play a vital role in our community that corporate chains seldom do.

Stocking Stuffers Bringing Smiles and Helping Ease Strained Holiday Budgets

No one seems exactly certain when the tradition of hanging stockings at the holidays actually began. But by 1822, Clement Clark Moore’s famous poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (better known as “The Night Before Christmas”) had been published. Today there are few children who don’t recognize the words, “The stockings were hung by the chimney with care in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.”

Despite its popularity, the Christmas stocking is often overlooked during the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping. Hence, stocking stuffers are usually purchased last. Fortunately, there are many gift ideas that are sure to please without draining an already strained budget. Some of the more popular stuffers to

Traditional goodies. All kids love sweets. So why not include their favorite treats!

Clothes/accessories. Colorful and fun, still useful, items such as gloves, slippers, scarves, socks and belts make great stocking stuffers.

School supplies. Whether learning from home or learning from school, Christmas is a great time to stock up on fun supplies for school, such as gel pens in cool neon colors, markers and even homework helpers.

Mini games or card games. Sized just right, these gifts are great for amusing the kids and interacting with family during the Holidays. and Arts and Crafts. Gifts can also enhance a child’s existing interest in something such as sports, art or music.

Gift cards or certificates. Kids today like the freedom to choose their own gifts. A gift card to the movies, favorite retail store, or favorite restaurant allows kids to feel all grown-up.

Traditional toys. Regardless of their age, few kids can resist the fun of some of some of the old standbys, like Silly Putty, Jacks or a Slinky.

All ages love stocking stuffers, there are many mini-gifts out there for the teenager and above. Make up, silly socks, hair products, etc.

To enhance the excitement, wrap the stocking stuffers. Pack the stocking full, and don’t forget to let one or two items stick out from the top to tempt curious eyes, and enjoy your holidays with friends and family! %

To make pie crust: Preheat oven to 350 F.

In bowl of food processor, add flour, sugar and salt; pulse to combine. Add cold plant butter and shortening. Process about 10 seconds until it looks like coarse meal.

With food processor running, add ice water. Process until mixture clumps together.

On lightly floured surface, roll dough into 14-inch circle. Transfer to 9-inch pie dish. Lift edges and allow dough to drape into dish. Trim, leaving 1-inch overhang. Fold excess dough under and crimp edges.

To make pumpkin filling: In medium saucepan over medium heat, add syrup and vanilla; warm about 2 minutes then remove from heat and set aside.

In large bowl, combine syrup mixture, pumpkin, coconut cream, plant cream, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove, salt and cornstarch; blend with hand mixer until smooth. Pour mixture into pie crust. Bake 1 hour. If crust starts to burn, cover edges with aluminum foil. The middle will still be jiggly.

Cool at room temperature 30 minutes then cover and transfer to refrigerator to chill at least 5 hours or overnight. Before serving, sprinkle pie with white sugar and, using kitchen torch, brelee until sugar is melted and dark brown.

To make whipped topping: Using electric hand mixer or stand mixer, whisk plant cream, powdered sugar and vanilla on high until mixture thickens and stiff peaks form.

Slice and serve with whipped topping.

Traditional Hanukkah

Most Jewish Americans know of all Hanukkah traditions such as lighting the menorah each night; playing dreidel games; eating foods cooked in oil; and giving gifts. However, many wonder if this last tradition is really a Jewish tradition, or whether Hanukkah presents just came about in reaction to Christmas. The giving of gifts is not historically a part of Hanukkah. In fact, gift-giving on Hanukkah is not unlike gift-giving on Christmas – it has little, if anything, to do with the religious requirements of the celebration. But when the holiday starts on the evening of Dec. 18 this year many Jewish Americans will be focused on getting gifts as they do every year.

The trend of exchanging Hanukkah gifts really took off in the 1950s. At this time, Jewish child psychologists as well as rabbis started promoting gifts as a way to make postHolocaust Jewish kids happy to be Jewish, rather than sad about missing out on Christmas. These days, some families celebrate both holidays!

Today, some families prefer to give Hanukkah money rather than gifts because they view Gelt (money and/or chocolate coins) as a more authentically Jewish tradition. One way is to give one dollar per candle, not counting the shamash (the “helper” candle used to light the other ones). On the first night the children receive one dollar; second night, two, etc. The total is $36 for eight nights. Children these days are prone to expect more, but if this is a tradition then during Hanukkah most are thrilled to carry it on.

Gelt can also refer to chocolate coins given to Jewish children on the festival of Hanukkah. They are usually wrapped in gold foil, and their history can be traced back to the decision of the Hasmoneans to mint their own nation’s coins after their military victory over the Greek Syrians. Gelt is often used to gamble with in the game of dreidel.

One suggestion in lieu of gifts is families can light candles to honor justice or peace or talk about what brings light into one’s life or what places in this world need more light. Even with gift giving, family holiday celebrations can still aim to foster social consciousness. Some kids are encouraged to look through their toys and determine what they no longer play with and can, thus, donate. Charitable donations are one of the best Chanukah gifts to give to other family and friends. Be sure to send cards (perhaps made by your children) with information about the organization, so recipients will know that your gift was thoughtful and made with them in mind.

Food is always loved by all! One idea is to gift a box of designer donuts to symbolize sufganiyah, a jelly-filled doughnut traditionally eaten during Hanukkah in Israel. Gifting gourmet food items like chocolate, fancy jams and spreads, and special cooking oils (since oil is so important to this holiday). You can get different samples of all and create a small gift basket.

There’s no need to go overboard with your gifts. Historically speaking, lavish gift giving isn’t a Hanukkah tradition, so don’t feel pressured to spend a lot of money. Gifts like books, clothes, gift certificates, and jewelry, are always appropriate, especially if they are personal and thoughtful.

Happy Hanukkah and happy gift-giving! %

The holidays are just around the corner, and we all know that marks the return of the perennially exciting ballet The Nutcracker. This year’s show is going to be extra special for the community at Agapé Dance because it marks their 10th anniversary! Ever since Melanie Useldinger started Agapé Dance in 2012, they’ve been trying to bring their characteristic blend of the rigor of classical ballet and the warmth and care of agapé love.

While this isn’t most of the dancers’ first rodeo, this Nutcracker will be particularly special for one of Agapé’s newest dancers, Yeva Ziniak. Yeva’s family just moved to the Santa Cruz area after the conflict started in Ukraine earlier this year. After starting ballet on scholarship in the

spring, Yeva got to experience the excitement of ballet for the first time dancing in Agapé’s summer production of Swan Lake. Now, she’s working hard to get ready for her very first Nutcracker!

“Working on Nutcracker really gets me excited about the holidays coming up,” says Director Conrad Useldinger, “and all the things I love about the holidays–the community, the quality time spent together–they can really be felt when I’m working with my students and their families on the show. I’m also looking forward to Yeva

Christina Frankiv, 16, will be playing the role of Sugarplum Fairy this year alongside guest artist Aly Ely. Both Christina and Aly have been dancing at Agapé ever since its opening, so it’ll be fun having both dancers on-stage for the 10th Anniversary show. Along with these fabulous dancers, this year’s show will be featuring a special new section for Agapé alumni choreographed by Aly Ely. The creative team at Agapé can’t wait for the community to see this spectacular show.

This year, you can catch Agapé Dance’s 10th Anniversary Nutcracker at Cabrillo College’s Crocker Theater, where it will be showing on Wednesday, Dec. 21st and Thursday, Dec. 22nd, with shows at 2:30pm and 6:30pm on both days. Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre Nutcracker Tickets Make a Great Holiday Gift

Santa Cruz County’s resident ballet company Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre presents The Nutcracker at the Civic Auditorium this December 10 and 11. This year marks the 20th of this holiday classic at the Civic with live orchestra. SCBT moved its production to the Civic in 2002, building a custom stage using local union stage hands, and setting the musicians in front, which allows the audience to see them in action during the performance. SCBT continues to bring 52 professional musicians under the baton of Music Director Pamela Martin to local audiences. 2022 also marks Maestro Martin’s 10th year conducting the orchestra.

The SCBT Nutcracker features over 50 local dancers, including its own talented pre-professional company dancers. These dancers train rigorously all year long, honing their physical and artistic skills for many hours every week. Many of these young dancers will move on to a career in the field, as the graduate ratio of professional dancers produced by SCBT is incredibly high. Come see the professional dancers of the future in their formative years! The official academy of SCBT includes choreography training in its syllabus,

and this year, three of the company dancers are creating the Arabian divertissement for the stage. With the right training and mentoring, these young people can do it all!

Guest artist and SCBT alumna Melody Mennite will star as the Sugar Plum Fairy. Melody is the quintessential Sugar Plum and has danced this role with SCBT many times, including as a 16-year-old student as well as guest artist. A principal dancer with Houston Ballet, Melody relishes the ability to return to her hometown and reconnect with local audiences as well as the dancers who might just follow in her footsteps.

SCBT recommends viewers be at least 3 years of age, as the performance is approximately 2 hours long with one twenty-minute intermission. Concessions will be sold, but must be enjoyed in the lobby or outside, not brought into the auditorium. Downtown Santa Cruz sports a vibrant restaurant scene, so please enjoy your favorite eatery or find a new one to try for a snack or meal before or after the performance.

SCBT is following local and federal health protocol and recommends that every person entering the Civic

Auditorium be vaccinated. It is also highly recommended that audience members wear masks while indoors. Should health and safety recommendations change by December, SCBT will follow local and federal mandates. To lessen the spread of all communicable diseases and illnesses, please do NOT come to the performance if you are feeling sick or have any Covid or flu-like symptoms. policy which can be added to any ticket purchase.

Cozze e Vongole, Crespolini di Zucca, Vitello Classico are a few of the authentic Italian delights at Cafe Mare in Santa Cruz. Top off your meal with tiramisu, panna cotta, or semifreddo limoncello. To rev up your taste buds, just read the menu.

Owner Jean Pierre Iuliano, from Calabria in southern Italy, procures the finest fresh, local ingredients – think fish and produce – and imports cheese, pasta and extra virgin olive oil to create simple goodness.

Calabria is at the southernmost tip of Italy’s mainland, nearly surrounded by water. Historically people there are known for tasty food that is easy to make, featuring pork, a local chili pepper, swordfish, the purply sweet Tropea onions and eggplants.

Iuliano’s recipes come from his mother in his homeland. He graduated from Università della Calabria in 1992, and opened Café Mare in 2002. Customers rave about the gluten-free options such as gluten-free bread, gluten-free ravioli with a butter sage sauce and gluten-free penne with chicken and spinach with gluten free penne.

Guests advise: Don’t overlook the specials – they are amazing. An extensive collection of fine Italian and California wines is available, along with classic cocktails. Live jazz is an attraction on Fridays and Saturdays. You’re likely to find many of the staff are from Italy. The people who work here remember you – and treat you like family. If you are in the mood for Italian, this is the place – a bit of Italy right here in Santa Cruz. We also have a fulll bar and featuring several unique craft cocktails.
