Freedom Boulevard to Corralitos Road. Right on Varni to Pioneer Road to Green Valley Road, left on Casserly and right on Highway 152.
Normally Airport Boulevard and Highway 152 handle the cars and farm trucks pretty well. But when your favorite travel app warns of heavy traffic on the most popular routes to the Fairgrounds you’ll be glad you grabbed the attached map. Use it to find a road less traveled. It isn’t necessarily shorter in distance but may be quicker in time. At the very least following roads with names like Casserly and Carlton will certainly take you through some beautiful country. Even though you might have to share the road with a large number of your friends and neighbors, the 2018 Santa Cruz County Fair is worth the trip. And this year you can navigate the back roads like a local with or without that very smart phone.

CEO’s Message 2018 Hello everyone, it’s that time of year! You would think 12-months between Fairs would give us plenty of time to prepare; however it never seems that way as Fairtime draws near. Which is why as soon as one fair ends, our dedicated staff and volunteers begin preparing for the next. As excited as our staff and volunteers are to ring in the 2018 fair, I would be remiss if I did not mention the absence of an important member of our Fair family. Shortly after our 2017 Fair we lost our longtime friend and volunteer, Lynne Grossi. Those of you who had the pleasure of knowing Lynne knew she was a dedicated volunteer. She knew it all, from livestock and horse shows to Lego’s and Home Arts. Lynne was the first one on the grounds in the morning and the last to leave at night. Our Fair will not be the same without her. To fill the void Lynne has left, our volunteers stepped in; each taking a task or two she once handled. For 2018 we have the return of Monster Trucks and Motorcycles. This event sells out every year, so arrive early. Better yet, purchase your tickets online to avoid the rush. We also have the return of our crowd favorites: the All Alaskan Racing Pigs, Turkey Stampede and Camel rides. In the what’s new category we have Rattlesnake Dave Richardson and, while not exactly new, the return of Brad’s World Reptiles and Twinkle Time.

This year also brings us some new food options like “A Pop Above” which will offer assorted flavors of freshly made gourmet popcorn. It’s back for the fourth year and it is two nights of Monster Trucks and Motorcycles. This motorsport event brings the thrill of huge trucks and daredevil motorcycles all going air born. And there is a special connection to the Fair; the monster trucks are the passion of Watsonville resident Kelvin Ramer. Oh and then there is the thing they do with the big ‘ol RV. You’ll laugh till you cry! So pick the most convenient evening and make it to the Fairgrounds for Monster Trucks and Motorcycles on Wednesday, September 12 and Thursday, September 13. Both shows roar into action at 7:30 p.m.

Live Entertainment Michael Mezmer T rance -N osis
After well more than 200 shows it’s safe to say that it wouldn’t be the Santa Cruz County Fair without Michael Mezmer. This Master Hypnotist fills the Tank House Stage with neighbors and friends being sometimes silly and always hilarious. The bleachers around the stage are filled to over flowing with a crowd that can’t stop laughing. In addition to his nightly Trance-Nosis comedy hypnosis shows, Michael returns with two daily shows of “DangerMagik.”
At corporate events and universities around the country, he presents quantum stress management workshops. Mezmer also has had the honor of being an invited guest lecturer and starring performer at the International Hypnotherapy Conference and has been dubbed by the president of the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners as the “hypnotist’s hypnotist.” Mezmer will be performing his DangerMagik show twice daily and Trance-Nosis twice nightly on the Tank House Stage. Mezmer is a quite the entertainer and, as passersby stop and watch, the audience grows and grows as the show continues. His Trance-Nosis shows are designed to enthrall, surprise, and entertain. Under his mesmerizing power, unsuspecting audience members face their fears, lose inhibitions and become a highly entertaining focus of the show. He showed signs of his unusual talent at the tender age of 5 and prior to becoming recognized as a top hypnotist, he appeared in musical comedies, television and films, and toured internationally as an award-winning illusionist. Since then he has become a well-known and respected expert in the field of hypnosis and is highly sought after as a lecturer as well as an entertainer.

Calpulli Itzapapaloti Danza Azteca is a local Pre-Columbian Aztec dance troupe based in San Benito County. This colorful troupe will perform on the main Amphitheater Stage at 5 PM on Sunday, September 16.

He strolls, he sings, he tells stories and teaches about life in an earlier time here in the west. He’s Cisco Jim, a retired educator who is still educating from atop his horse Silverado. You’ll find him roving the grounds daily at the 2018 Santa Cruz County Fair.

She added, “We sprinkle a few bilingual phrases, English and Spanish, throughout the songs. The kids are having fun but also learning a cool message.” Younger children will learn coordination through Twinkle’s signature dance moves as they “Move and Groove Twinkle Time Style.” Twinkle Time will perform three shows daily on the Tank House Stage.

The trio performs wearing wacky colored clothing and puts on a show that will get kids and parents jumping to their feet to dance and sing along. “Twinkle Time is a high energy educational and bilingual pop concert for kids,” Twinkle explains, “Parents love it too because the music is so fun and catchy, people love to get up and dance along!” What makes this pop group stand out is the importance of learning while having fun. “All the songs are pop-rock related, but all about teaching a positive educational message,” Twinkle said.

Rattlesnake DAVE
attlesnake Dave Richardson, a true showman and comic, has been traveling the country for 27 years educating and entertaining. But, not surprisingly, he didn’t start out to do this for a living. After a live wire sent 13,200 volts of electricity through his body and put him into intensive care, Dave Richardson said he decided the life of a tree trimmer was too dangerous. So he started rattlesnake show.

After his tree trimming days came to a close, Richardson said he took a job in Houston making high-speed, high-pay deliveries to businesses with equipment breakdowns. But he didn’t know the city and his prospects at the job began to dwindle. He packed his things and was ready to return to New York, but he stopped into a
lumber yard for business and overheard conversation between a pair of Texans.

“I hear this guy talking to one of the other employees. He says ‘I finally got it, I took my vacation during the rattlesnake roundup.’” The roundup, in Sweetwater, Texas, wasn’t a big diversion from the long drive back to New York, and Richardson was curious, so he stopped by. A rattlesnake handler there had an above-ground pool liner enclosure with bleachers surrounding it. Richardson said he watched the man and other handlers for days and asked questions. He began to think he could do it. For the first two years he never touched the snakes with his hands, only using tongs, a hook or other objects. The snakes have memories and will seek retribution if you hurt them, he insisted. Often as he’s handling snakes he talks to them. “I say, ‘Look, you guys be cool, we’ll do this and I’ll take you home.’” Part of the trick to keeping himself safe while performing is not to make it look easy, he said. He maintains a perfect safety record, having NEVER been bitten and his western diamondback rattlesnakes, affectionately referred by him as his “Little Texans” are rescue snakes. They are kept for one show season and then returned to the vicinity where they came from on safe, private land. Then Dave collects new snakes from the wild and works as a true “snake whisperer” to get them ready for “Show time”! A psychic once told Richardson he’d be handling rattlesnakes into his eighties, he said. He’s 70 now. “But you know what’s good? The older I get, the less I have to lose if I’m bitten and die,” he said, laughing. “If I was 20 or 21? I’m not getting in there, 21, 22, no way. But man, 70. Hey, come on.” Rattlesnake Dave and all his venomous little friends will be waiting for Fairgoers daily out in the Apple Blossom Lane.

On Sunday afternoon, September 16, the main Horse Show Arena at the Fairgrounds transforms itself from a competitive horsemanship arena into a performance venue. The traditional Charro show returns with a start time of 4 PM Charreria is the art and style of Mexican horsemanship plus a good dose of performance art, roping, and daring stunts, all to the driving beat of a live Banda. The sport has been described as “living history,� or as an art form drawn from the demands of a working life with both men and women performing. This is a show with something for all cultures. This year the Fair is pleased to host the return of Salinas Valley Charros and Los Reyes de la Banda.

JUNIOR FAIR BOARD The Junior Fair Board provides opportunities for leadership and involvement in the annual Santa Cruz County Fair. One of their contributions is the Small Animal Barn Petting Zoo which will be open until 9 PM each day of Fair. The Petting Zoo will give Fairgoers the chance to see, feed and pet Cleopatra the Emu, Princess Anna Banana the llama, a miniature horse named Punk, a miniature donkey they call Phil, and many other unique animals. The Petting Zoo is one of the things they do, but who are they? The member’s answers to a recent questionnaire provide an idea of just who makes up this group. Kiddie Korral Sometimes you just need to run around. And if you are a toddler, and your parents are near Paddy Smith Park during the 2018 Santa Cruz County Fair, you can! The second year of the Kiddie Korrall is sponsored by Dignity Health Dominican Hospital, and will be set up in beautiful Paddy Smith Park. With green grass, shade trees, activities, toys, rocking chairs, picnic tables and a changing area, the Kiddie Korral provides a safe fun place for parents to let their young children run and get some of that “kid energy” out. Then after young children get that energy out, they and the entire family can go back and spend more time enjoying everything the Fair offers. Organizer Woody Ledbetter reminds parents that like last year “This is not a baby sitting service but a safe place for parents to let their young children be children.” She added “Everyone including our young guests should be able to enjoy the Fair at their pace and sometimes that means getting out and running around.”

Ag History YESTERDAY’S FARM
For the 32nd year the Agricultural History Project (AHP) is presenting Yesterday’s Farm. Each year AHP offers a look at a different segment of agriculture focusing on the Central Coast of California. This year the emphasis will be on the history of caring for all the apple and fruit trees that were grown in the area. Over the years AHP has received into the collection many different sprayers that were used on fruit trees. They also show the evolution of the equipment starting with hand sprayers and progressing all the way to the power sprayers that are used in today’s orchards. When the Agricultural History Project was formed in 1986, it was decided that they would concentrate on building a static exhibit first (Codiga Center and Museum, Porter Building, Borina Barn, Snyder building and needed infrastructure) then a Living History Farm. So here they are 32 years later, and that dream is coming true. The Board of Directors of the Santa Cruz County Fair has granted AHP permission to develop a Living History Farm on property adjacent to the present site. Grading will start October 6th and be finished by the 15th. Volunteers will be explaining the plans for the site and how you can participate in helping make it a reality. Also new this year is the Ag History 4-H Club. Their first meeting was July 22nd and you will have a chance to meet them at Yesterday’s Farm during the Fair. Other activities will be ongoing demonstrations on the Porch located at the Living History Farm Site. Demonstrations will show how activities
were done in the past; including fruit drying, quilting, saddle making and many others. There will be a Tractor Parade each evening at 6:30 with the exception of Saturday’s parade which rolls through the grounds at 3:30 PM. Claudia’s Kitchen will be open again to show the public how food was prepared before today’s modern appliances. The Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association will again be operating some of the old engines and equipment. AHP has planted a Three Sisters Garden in the front of Codiga Center and Museum, plan to stop by to enjoy. The gift shop will be featuring some new items and is loaded with cute stuffed toys for children. New this year is Line Dancing on Friday and Saturday nights starting about 8 PM.

The Haiku is new in poetry at the Fair P L EASE COM E AND ENJ OY Not to worry, there are still cows and cotton candy, carnival rides and racing pigs, but also, Poetry. In the fine arts building fair goers will find a special section that is pure poetry. And for the first time, a division for the elegant Haiku. Haiku (俳句) (or hokku) A Japanese verse form most often composed, in English versions, of three unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables.

There is an adult division and two youth divisions in the new Haiku category. The Santa Cruz County Fair Poetry Department may be small but on display are the large talents of locals with flowing pens that express the emotions of life and experience. Diaper Derby AND TODDLER CONTEST If it’s been some time since you have had a little one in the house or that is something you have yet to experience, you might want to plan on being in Paddy Smith Park on Saturday, September 15, during the Fair. The Diaper Derby/ Toddler Contest kicks off, or rather crawls off, starting at 1 PM. These slow motion races for the prize begin orderly enough but as soon as the whistle blows an entertaining chaos breaks out. The kids are cute and their parents are entertaining. Some of the competitors head straight for the finish line, at least in the beginning, but most wander off when they spot something far more interesting

The derby has its roots in the celebrations held in pioneer communities and was a part of the Santa Cruz Fair in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Fair Board of Director Loretta Estrada brought the event back to the Fair and it grows in popularity each year. While the Kentucky Derby calls itself the fastest two minutes in sport, the Fair Diaper Derby is the slowest two minutes. But way more fun!

Livestock
LIFE LESSONS LEARNED IN LIVESTOCK County fairs have been a part of America for the past 207 years and livestock shows have been a part of them the entire time. The first livestock show in Santa Cruz County was held in 1887. Livestock shows followed the original purpose of Fairs, to bring people together and display the latest techniques and gadgets that made life easier for the farmer and homemaker. Livestock shows were also held to improve the various breeds of animals through competition. Today the shows are a big part of the life lessons being taught by 4-H and FFA. Members of both groups show animals they have raised for the Fair. Depending on the species raised these youngsters have cared for their animal from 60 to 120 days for market animals, while breeding projects are multiyear ventures. The livestock projects teach many life skills such as responsibility, record keeping and marketing. Many of the competitors are raising funds to help pay for college and earn an extra benefit. Very seldom, if ever, do you see a child who has an animal project
get in trouble. They are too busy learning how to be good citizens and contributing to their communities. At the Fair this year visitors have the opportunity to watch as they show their animals in the Livestock Arena, walk through the three livestock barns, and also see one of the most popular spots on the Fairgrounds, The Nursery. The Nursery is set up to show young animals and the instincts of mothers caring for their young. Like all departments at the Fair, the Livestock Department is an all-volunteer group of people dedicated to working with the youth of our community to make sure they have a positive experience at the Fair. The Junior Livestock Auction takes place during the Fair on Saturday, September 15, when market animals are sold. Buyers for these animals will pay abovemarket prices to help the child recover expenses and make a profit. The Livestock Committee invites all to come to the auction on Saturday and support youth.
2018 Heritage Hog Watsonville Future Farmers of America member Jacob Dixon has been awarded the 2018 Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds Foundation Heritage Hog Scholarship. A recent graduate of Watsonville High School, Dixon is planning to attend Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, this fall majoring in Animal Science. He hopes to be a large animal veterinarian. JACOB DIXON Dixon has participated in FFA during the last three years, and has served as chapter Vice-President and President as well as competing in Job Interview, Cooperative Marketing, several public speaking events and has won second place in section for Prepared Public Speaking. He was also involved in the Chemistry Club, College Club, and Interact Club and ran Cross Country at school while working part time at a local restaurant. The Fairgrounds Foundation wishes him the greatest success in his future education endeavors. The Heritage Hog Program is a fundraiser for Fairgrounds improvements while at the same time a scholarship benefitting Junior Livestock exhibitors to further their education. Each year the Fairgrounds Foundation selects a local 4-H, FFA, or independent student with experience raising livestock for the Fair

who is enrolling in college or pursuing another higher education program to raise a hog provided by the Foundation. The hog is exhibited at the Fair and sold at the end of the Junior Livestock Auction with the proceeds, combined with other donations, used by the Fairgrounds Foundation to fund the scholarship and for needed improvements on the Fairgrounds. Following the Fair and upon class enrollment Dixon will be awarded $2,000.00 for use towards educational expenses. The Heritage Hog Scholarship is a great way to encourage current youth involvement in Fair Livestock activities and foster future educational development for these hard working junior exhibitors. The Fairgrounds Foundation solicits donations for this program as a means to raise funds for general Fairgrounds improvements. Donors of $500.00 or more are invited to visit the Foundation 500 Club open each evening adjacent to the Heritage Hall during the 2018 Fair. In Memoriam
Lynne Marie Grossi January 26, 1956 – February 8, 2018 Lynne Marie Grossi of Santa Cruz passed away at the age of 62 on February 8, 2018. She was born in Santa Cruz to Robert L. and Pat Grossi on January 26, 1956. A third generation Santa Cruzan, Lynne attended Harbor High School where she graduated in 1974. While working at Intel, she attended Mission College in Santa Clara where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Electronics. Lynne retired from Intel in 2007 after 20 years. She has been involved in 4-H most of her life. As a youth she worked in the 4-H camp kitchen and as an adult she was on the Camp Loma Board of Directors and Treasurer. Lynne was also a six-year Freedom Rotary member. She was a volunteer at Santa Cruz County Fair Livestock Department since 1980 and became head of the department in 1992. She was also a judging clerk throughout the state for many years and for the past 15 years she prepared the entry guide for the Fair.
Before retiring from Intel she began volunteering at the Agriculture History Project (AHP). After retiring she volunteered as the office manager for AHP, did the gardening; which she loved, mowed the lawns, and took care of the chickens. She helped build the Codiga Center & Museum and other buildings at AHP as well as chairing a number of special events. Six years ago she was asked to be the office manager of the Fairgrounds so she began volunteering half time at AHP and half time for the Fairgrounds. Lynne is survived by her mother Pat Grossi, twin sister Carol Grossi and one niece and nephew. She was preceded in death by her father Robert L. Grossi who passed away in 1988. Funding Your Fairgrounds Future Since 2002 when the Santa Cruz County Heritage Foundation was created, the mission has always been the same - To Ensure a vibrant, healthy Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds.
The Foundation’s efforts continue to ensure the vitality of this important community resource.
In 2016 the Foundation changed its name to the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds Foundation. It remains a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, raising funds through donations, special events, beverage sales, grants, planned giving and sponsorships. Through its community connections, it has assumed a major role in keeping the community aware of activities and improvements at the Fairgrounds.

All-Alaskan Racing Pigs
The Racing Pigs Return To The Beautiful Lawn Near The Livestock Area, Entertaining Cheering Crowds At The Santa Cruz County Fair. These prestigious porkers are returning to the Fair for three appearances daily. Although the Alaska State Fair has been their home site for 31 years, they have a soft spot for Santa Cruz County, according to manager Bart Noll. “We first played here thirty years ago. It was a full house for our first show and hasn’t stopped” he says, adding “We’re humbled by the overflow crowds and hope you’re having as much fun as we are.”

Two of the main ingredients for the All-Alaskan Racing Pig shows are comedy and competition. These perky pigs are natural hams, so to speak, and they’ve brought home the bacon at shows all over the western U.S. and Alaska.

When your children are out with you at this year’s Fair pick up a Passport from the Fairgrounds-Foundation Information Booth. As you walk through the Fair look for the cow, get their passport stamped, and after they visit all the exhibits head back to the Information Booth where they’ll be able to claim a prize. Using the Passport as a guide is a great way to see many of the departments and areas of the Fair with displays showing some of the bounty this county has to offer.

Another important ingredient of the race is cookies, which is the treat that the pigs are racing to win. Each race only lasts about six seconds (these pigs are fast!) and each 20-minute show 3 features four races. s bbie

Senior Day It’s true that the annual Santa Cruz County Fair is a perfect place for young families but on opening day, which is Wednesday, September 12, Seniors Rule! It all happens on the Amphitheater Lawn and begins at 12:30 to the music of the South Bay Swing Band followed at 1 PM with the senior’s only Ice Cream Social and special senior contests. “We look for someone with the most birthdays or who traveled the furthest to come to the Fair, things like that” explained organizer Loretta Estrada. The South Bay Swing Band provides a nice backdrop with the music of their lives and it all makes for quite a convivial gathering. Why even dancing has been known to break out when the band kicks it up a notch. To recap the festivities – the downbeat for the South Bay Swing Band’s first set is at 12:30 and they’ll start scooping ice cream at 1 PM with the senior contest starting shortly thereafter. The band returns for their second set at 2 PM.
Brad’s World Reptiles You come to the 2018 Santa Cruz County Fair, find yourself in the Ball Park, and wind up spending time with amazing live reptiles, amphibians, and other exotic species. You have entered Brad’s World Reptiles. This experience is the brainchild of Brad Tylman and is driven by his passion for education and nature. Tylman graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in Zoology and has traveled the globe since accumulating knowledge about the natural world.
