Alternate Routes to the Fair
Freedom Boulevard to Corralitos Road. Right on Varni to Pioneer Road to Green Valley Road, left on Casserly and right on Highway 152.
Normally Airport Boulevard and Highway 152 handle the cars and farm trucks pretty well. But when your favorite travel app warns of heavy traffic on the most popular routes to the Fairgrounds you’ll be glad you grabbed the attached map. Use it to find a road less traveled. It isn’t necessarily shorter in distance but may be quicker in time. At the very least following roads with names like Casserly and Carlton will certainly take you through some beautiful country. Even though you might have to share the road with a large number of your friends and neighbors, the 2019 Santa Cruz County Fair is worth the trip. And this year you can navigate the back roads like a local with or without that very smart phone.

Santa Cruz County Fair
anager’s Messa M / O ge CE Dear Friends and Supporters: Nearly 18 years ago, on September 11 2001, it was opening day of the Santa Cruz County Fair. That year, opening day was a very somber event as we were all shocked and saddened to learn countless innocent lives were lost as a result of the senseless terrorist attacks on our Country. This year the Santa Cruz County Fair opens on September 11, 2019. As they have graciously done every year, our local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will assist the Fair with its opening day ceremonies where we will have a moment of silence in remembrance of the tragic events on that day, September 11, 2001. Our Fair theme this year is “Round Up the Red, White and Blue.” These few words speak volumes and serves as a way to honor those we lost and to remember how fortunate we are to live in such a great country. A special veteran will also be honored at the Fair during the Quilts of Valor presentation. Santa Cruz County 4-H clubs, sponsored by the Aptos Grange, will present a quilt, as a token of appreciation, to the veteran as part of Quilts of Valor project. The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to “cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.” Members from our local 4-H club helped to create the quilt that will be presented. At the presentation ceremony, attendees will learn about the veteran’s service to our country. The quilt is then opened; the inside of the quilt faces the veteran so they are the first to see the quilt. After the veteran sees the quilt, it is then shown to the public and given to the veteran by wrapping it around them. Quilts of Valor presentations are taking place all across the country. We are thankful to our 4-H clubs and the Aptos Grange for participating in this worthwhile project. For 2019 we have the return of Monster Trucks and Motorcycles on Wednesday & Thursday evenings. We also have the return of many fair favorites such as the All Alaskan Racing Pigs, Turkey Stampede, Camel Rides, Rattlesnake Dave Richardson, Brad’s World Reptiles, Twinkle Time Michael Mesmer’s magic & hypnosis, Rocket’s Fido 500 along with a new addition of the Los Moralitos Circus performing outdoors in the baseball field adjacent to the Crosetti Building. Please join me in watching multiple circus performances including the “wheel of death”. New concession additions including Hawaiian Food & Tropical Fruit Drinks join our vast selection of tasty fair treats. So please join us at the 2019 Santa Cruz County Fair as we “Round Up the Red, White and Blue”!

Monster Trucks & MOTORCROSS 2019
It’s back for the fifth year and it is two nights of Monster Trucks and Motocross. This motorsport event brings the thrill of huge trucks and daredevil motorcycles all going airborn. And there is a special connection to the Fair; the monster trucks are the passion of Watsonville resident Kelvin Ramer. And there’s a rumor he’ll be joined by daughter Rosalee Ramer, a champion in her own right. Oh and then there is the thing they do with the big ‘ol RV. You’ll laugh till you cry! So pick the most convenient evening and make it to the Fairgrounds for Monster Trucks and
Motocross on Wednesday, September 11 and Thursday, September 12. Both shows roar into action at 7:30 p.m.
Fido 500
MINI DOG RACES Ashley and Rocket are getting ready to present the most adorable racing participants ever seen. Out in the expanded Ballpark it’s the FIDO 500 Mini Dog Races twice daily. Check the daily schedule for times to make sure you don’t miss the chance to cheer for your favorite little one.

The White Album Ensemble is coming to the main stage on Friday, September 13th , a performance of the Beatles’ music from local musicians who came together to create 2019 celebrates the 50th year since the Beatles’ last album Abbey Road, the band plans on performing “Come Together”, and other memorable songs from the album on the main stage Friday night. The White Album Ensemble began as a dream to bring together a team of top local musicians to perform the Beatles “White Album” live, in a theatre setting with lights, dance and a full-screen video. In 2003 both of their debut shows sold out and created a buzz around town on the top-notch quality of performance, which led the group to continue performing. Included in that continuation were six more sold out performances including local shows at the Rio Center for the Performing Arts in Santa Cruz and the Henry Mello Center in Watsonville. The group eventually would add other albums that were too difficult for the Beatles to play live, such as

Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Peppers, and more. Sixteen years later and the group continues to pack theatres and refine the “Classic of our Time.” The White Album Ensemble has a core of longtime friends who’ve played together for decades in different configurations, former members of such popular groups as the Doobie Brothers, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Moby Grape, Snail, the Little River Band, The Tubes, and many more. The essence of WAE is a live performance of the Beatles albums which they themselves never performed “live.” The White Album Ensemble aims to perform the Beatles music in a symphony like performance using voices, guitars, drums… whatever it takes besides fake accents or costumes. Join White Album Ensemble at the Santa Cruz County Fair for a night of singing along to some of the most popular music of all time.

Rattlesnake Dave
AND HIS WEST TEXAS RATTLESNAKE SHOW attlesnake Dave Richardson, a true showman and comic, has been traveling the country for 28 years educating and entertaining. But, not surprisingly, he didn’t start out to do this for a living. After a live wire sent 13,200 volts of electricity through his body and put him into intensive care, Dave Richardson said he decided the life of a tree trimmer was too dangerous. So he started a traveling rattlesnake show… After his tree trimming days came to a close, Richardson said he took a job in Houston making high-speed, high-pay deliveries to businesses with equipment breakdowns. But he didn’t know the city and his prospects at the job began to dwindle. He packed his things and was ready to return to New York, but he stopped into a lumber yard for business and overheard a conversation between a pair of Texans. “I hear this guy talking to one of the other employees. He says ‘I finally got it, I took my vacation during the rattlesnake roundup.’” The roundup, in Sweetwater, Texas, wasn’t a big diversion from the long drive back to New York, and Richardson was curious, so he stopped by. A rattlesnake handler there had an above-ground pool liner enclosure with bleachers surrounding it. Richardson said he watched the man and other handlers for days and asked questions. He began to think he could do it. For the first two years he never touched the snakes with his hands, only using tongs, a hook or other objects. The snakes have memories and will seek retribution if you hurt them, he insisted. Often as he’s handling snakes he talks to them. “I say, ‘Look, you guys be cool, we’ll do this and I’ll take you home.’” Part of the trick to keeping himself safe while performing is not to make it look easy, he said. He maintains a perfect safety record, having NEVER been bitten and his western diamondback rattlesnakes, affectionately referred by him as his “Little Texans” are rescue snakes. They are kept for one show season and then returned to the vicinity where they came from on safe, private land. Then Dave collects new snakes from the wild and works as a true “snake whisperer” to get them ready for “Show time”! A psychic once told Richardson he’d be handling rattlesnakes into his eighties, he said. He’s 70 now. “But you know what’s good? The older I get, the less I have to lose if I’m bitten and die,” he said, laughing. “If I was 20 or 21? I’m not getting in there, 21, 22, no way. But man, 70. Hey, come on. When Grandparents, moms and dads bring their children to see the West Texas Rattlesnake Show, they are making exciting, joyful, and thrilling memories that will last a lifetime. Years ago, my Grandfather told me that when he was a little boy, his father took him to see Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. I always loved hearing those stories and Grandpa loved sharing the memories. Understanding this, the goal of the rattlesnake show is to see that audiences are delighted with each and every exciting, educational, and entertaining performance of my thirty minute show. Rattlesnake Dave and all his venomous little friends will be waiting for Fairgoers daily out in the Ball Park.

Twinkle Time ocking with orange pigtails out, “Twinkle Time” the kids pop-rock stage show returns to the 2019 Santa Cruz County Fair. Starring Twinkle, the bilingual pop artist returns with her two best friends; Happy, a clumsy and shy bookworm that loves science and Lil hoopz, who is blissfully aloof and loves anything sports or competitive. The trip performs wearing wacky colored clothing and puts on a show that will get kids and parents jumping to their feet to dance and sing along. “Twinkle Time is a high energy educational and bilingual pop concert for kids,” Twinkle explains, “Parents love it too, because the music is so fun
and catchy, people love to get up and dance along!” What makes this pop group stand out is the importance of learning through music and fun. “All the songs are pop-rock related, but all about teaching a positive educational message,” Twinkle said. She added, “We sprinkle a few bilingual phrases, English and Spanish throughout the songs. The kids are having fun but also learning a cool message.” Younger children will practice coordination through Twinkle’s signature dance moves as they ‘Move and Groove Twinkle Time Style.” Twinkle Time will perform three shows daily on the Tank House Stage, check the Fair App for exact show times.
A Ceremony
TO REMEMBER AND APPRECIATE At 5 PM on opening day, September 11, the main horseshow arena will host a ceremony to remember those lost on September 11, 2001, as well as the recent tragedies in Gilroy, El Paso and Dayton. The ceremony will feature 11 American flags carried on horseback, a color guard representing our military branches and the State of California. A firetruck will lead a contingent of first responders to honor the lives lost and those injured during the past month starting with our neighbors in Gilroy. And at the close there will be a prayer and moment of silence for all affected.

Kiddie Korral Kiddie Korral will be open daily in Paddy Smith Park Sometimes you just need to run around. And if you are a toddler, and your parents are near Paddy Smith Park during the 2019 Santa Cruz County Fair, you can! The third year of the Kiddie Korrall is sponsored by Dignity Health Dominican Hospital, and will be set up in beautiful Paddy Smith Park. With green grass, shade trees, activities, toys, rocking chairs, picnic tables and a changing area, the Kiddie Korral provides a safe fun place for parents to let their young children run and get some of that “kid energy” out. Then after young children get that energy out, they and the entire family can go back and spend more time enjoying everything the Fair offers. Organizer Woody Ledbetter reminds parents that like last year “This is not a baby sitting service but a safe place for parents to let their young children be children.” She added “Everyone including our young guests should be able to enjoy the Fair at their pace and sometimes that means getting out and running around.”

Quilts of Valor
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY FAIR YOUTH DEPARTMENT During the presentation ceremony a letter is read and those in attendance get to hear about the recipient’s service to our country. The quilt is then opened facing the veteran so they see if first before being shown to the crowd. It is then given to the veteran by wrapping it around him. The local Quilts of Valor group hopes to sew and wrap county veterans for many years to come. Turnquist encourages those interested in learning more to go to the Quilts of Valor website qovf.org . “But be careful, you might want to come sew quilts with us” she laughs. Fair Youth Department head Robin Turnquist was inspired last fall. As a member of the Aptos Grange #800 she attended the national Grange Convention and was in the audience when the Quilts of Valor organization spoke to those gathered. “It was so moving for me that I brought their story back to my local Grange” explained Turnquist.
The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.
Several members of the group jumped on board with the Aptos Grange agreeing to serve as sponsor. An invitation to county 4-H clubs went out as well as to anyone in the community interested in joining them for fellowship, sewing and citizenship.
Camel Rides
32
Fair visitors usually walk over to the livestock area expecting to see pigs, cattle, sheep, goats and other familiar fair animals. And perhaps to enjoy a guilty pleasure, a milkshake at the clover deli. But camels? Returning to the Santa Cruz County Fair, visitors will have the chance to ride a camel, which isn’t exactly something you get to do often if ever at all!
are known as Bactrians. The camels you will ride were obtained from domestic breeders in the United States, as camels are no longer allowed to be imported into the U.S.
The camel ride track will be located between the Pig Races and the Livestock Show Arena, two or three people can ride one of the camels at a time, depending on the amount of spaces available in the saddle. Rider weight isn’t really a factor for these large animals as they can carry over half of their own weight.
Contrary to what many people think, the humps of the camels are not filled with water. Instead, the humps are filled with dense fat. This fat can hold water for up to three weeks, which allows camels to survive for long periods of time without water in the desert. In addition, camels do no spit or bite like many people believe… llamas do that.
The rides will be atop Dromedary camels, meaning that they have only one hump. Two humped camels
The opportunity to ride camels is one more reason why the Fair is unique and has something fun for the entire family.
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY FAIR GUIDE | www.santacruzcountyfair.com
These camels are taken care of to the highest of ethical standards and are treated with much love. The camels enjoy a diet similar to what many horses eat; grass, hay, and grain. All the camels are extremely docile and enjoy being around people.

Diaper Derby If it’s been some time since you have had a little one in the house or that is something you have yet to experience, you might want to plan on being in Paddy Smith Park on Saturday, September 14, during the Fair. The Diaper Derby/Toddler Contest kicks off, or rather crawls off, starting at 1 PM. These slow motion races for the prize begin orderly enough but as soon as the whistle blows an entertaining chaos breaks out. The kids are cute and their parents are entertaining. Some of the competitors head straight for the finish line, at least in the beginning, but most wander off when they spot something far more interesting than dad jiggling the car keys on the other side of the mat. The derby has its roots in the celebrations held in pioneer communities and was a part of the Santa Cruz Fair in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Fair Board of Director Loretta Estrada brought the event back to the Fair and it grows in popularity each year. While the Kentucky Derby calls itself the fastest two minutes in sport, the Fair Diaper Derby is the slowest two minutes. But way more fun!

Funding Your Fairgrounds Future ince 2002, when the Santa Cruz County Heritage Foundation was created, the mission has always been the same - To ensure a vibrant, healthy Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds. In 2016 the Foundation changed its name to the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds Foundation. It remains a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, raising funds through donations, special events, beverage sales, grants, planned giving and sponsorships. Through its community connections, it has assumed a major role in keeping the community aware of activities and improvements at the Fairgrounds. With the help of volunteers, funds raised are used to provide additional operational services and much needed capital improvements on the fairgrounds. The Foundation’s efforts continue to ensure the vitality of this important community resource. Our major focus right now is the upgrade of our fire protection system. Although functional, parts for the 1970’s diesel engine are becoming difficult to locate so it’s time to upgrade. We have received a $75,000 matching grant from Monterey Peninsula Foundation, host of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, to do this upgrade. Every dollar you donate will
be matched by Monterey Peninsula Foundation. Just go to fairgrounds-foundation.org and you can Double Your Donation to us! The Foundation offered a Youth Leadership Program for the first time this summer to introduce high school students to our local agriculture industry, learn about careers in which they are interested and discover how those careers fit into our local agriculture industry. This community continues to be so generous in its support of the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds. We really appreciate everyone who gives to the Fairgrounds Foundation. Everyone makes a difference whether a donor, member, grantor, sponsor or volunteer. WOW! Without volunteers very little would happen at the Fairgrounds Foundation. From all of us, thank you! Enjoy the Fair! All-Alaskan Racing Pigs
The Racing Pigs Return To The Beautiful Lawn Near The Livestock Area, Entertaining Cheering Crowds At The Santa Cruz County Fair. These prestigious porkers are returning to the Fair for three appearances daily! Although the Alaska State Fair has been their home for 32 years, they have a soft spot for Santa Cruz County, according to manager Bart Noll. “We first played here thirty one years ago. It was a full house for our first show and hasn’t stopped since” he says, adding “We’re humbled by the overflow crowds and hope you’re having as much fun as we are.” The famous All-Alaskan Racing Pigs are a team of the fastest and funniest athletes to serve up entertainment anywhere! Two of the main ingredients for the All-Alaskan Racing Pig shows are comedy and competition. These perky pigs are natural hams, so to speak, and they’ve brought home the bacon at shows all over the western U.S. and Alaska. Another important ingredient of the race is cookies, which is the treat that the pigs are racing to win. Each race only lasts about six seconds (these pigs are fast!) and each 20-minute show features four races.
Bart Noll admits that his eight pigs are a little spoiled. They live in an air-conditioned trailer, eat well and get a fresh cedar or pine bedding change twice daily. “They love what they do,” Noll says, “and they like people and are fun to work with.” After the show stick around for an opportunity to meet one of these cute little porkers, they love to pose for pictures! Watch to see which one of the All-Alaskan Racing Pigs tries to hog the limelight at races held every day in their Fair home on the Livestock Lawn. Check the online schedule or Fair App for daily race times!

Senior Day It’s true that the annual Santa Cruz County Fair is a perfect place for young families but on opening day, which is Wednesday, September 11, Seniors Rule! It all happens on the Amphitheater Lawn and begins at 12:30 to the music of the South Bay Swing Band followed at 1 PM with the senior’s only Ice Cream Social and special senior contests. “We look for someone with the most birthdays or who traveled the furthest to come to the Fair, things like that” explained organizer Loretta Estrada. The South Bay Swing Band provides a nice backdrop with the music of their lives and it all makes for quite a convivial gathering. Why, even dancing has been known to break out when the band kicks it up a notch. To recap the festivities – the downbeat for the South Bay Swing Band’s first set is at 12:30 and they’ll start scooping ice cream at 1 PM with the senior contest starting shortly thereafter. The band returns for their second set at 2 PM.

Musings on the Origins of the AMATEUR WINEMAKING DEPARTMENT By Rudy Pedulla
George’s tenure the chairmanship went to Jerry Starr, who expanded its scope. Charlie Rice, a Golden Apple Teacher, sailor, and amateur winemaker, did much to improve the whole operation. Ken and Mitsuno Baurmeister, Deborah Yakulis, and Greg Swim have recently taken over the duties of leading the Department. All of the chair holders have gotten much help from the Amateur Winemaking Committee. There have been many members, and I don’t think I can remember them all, but certain individuals have contributed greatly, and they stand out. I’m remembering Dave and Barb Donofrio, Craig Vossbrinck, Ron Jones, Larry Hill, and Bill Peck.
t was in the spring of 1979 at an open house for Watsonville High School, where I was teaching. One of the parents there was Gil Mello, who I knew to be the manager of the Santa Cruz County Fair. I remember saying something to him like, “Folks can bring their pickles, jams, garden crops and quilts to be judged and shown, so how about our wines”? Good idea” he answered. “How about you start an Amateur Winemaking Department at the Fair”? Well he put me on the spot. I discussed it with my winemaking partners, teaching colleague Bill Peck, and my former student, Richard Lathrop. We decided to see what we could do about getting the project underway. This was obviously a challenging assignment, as we really knew nothing about how to set the thing up. We would have to establish rules and guidelines to be included in the Fair catalog, find qualified wine judges, and work out all the logistics such as time and place of judging, awards, display of the wines, etc. Flying by the seat of our pants, we sought the advice of whoever could help us. As to establishing the parameters of cataloging and judging, we got a lot of help from our professional winemaking friend, Tom Kruse. Tom, an all-around great guy who had a small winery in Gilroy, helped us a lot. When I look back, I’m reminded of how there were no other amateur winemaking Fair departments in the area, and of course, no internet. We almost had to invent it “out of whole cloth.” I am gratified to see that after having gotten the department under way, it continues to flourish. After chairing it for ten years, I turned it over to my friend and winemaking partner, George Lerek. After

One feature of our department that I am most proud of is the public tasting of the wines following the judging. The event is held on the Saturday before the opening of the Fair, and has become quite a gala affair. It is not only a fun event, but it affords the opportunity to fulfill one of the chief missions of a county fair -- to promote arts and crafts, science, and hobbies. The amateur winemakers get to meet and talk with one another, and some of the judges even attend. At the public tasting, which is held in Heritage Hall at the Fairgrounds, score sheets are handed out to the entrants and ribbons and other awards are presented. Committee members and entrants have traditionally provided hors d’oeuvres, and commemorative wine glasses are sold. It has been a most festive event which we winemakers enthusiastically look forward to. As I remember, the only time I missed participating was on the sad event of Bill Peck’s memorial service. Rudy Pedulla gives out the “Best of Show” award each year. The Wine Committee eponymously named this the R. A. Pedulla Award in his honor.
