In Scotts Valley, you’ll find small-town virtues & character amidst soaring redwoods, next to great beaches, just a half hour from the high-tech capitol of the world.

“There is no better place to raise a family, grow a business and discover a sense of community. Our town is proudly pro-business and we’d be honored to show you why Scotts Valley is the right place for you.” ~ Jim Reed, Mayor of Scotts Valley 2014 The City of Scotts Valley is in the heart of Santa Cruz County, just north of the City of Santa Cruz, and thirty miles south of San Jose. People are attracted to visiting and residing here due to our close proximity to the Silicon Valley, San Francisco Bay Area, and the Monterey Bay. Scotts Valley is minutes from the beaches of Santa Cruz and begins the upland slope of the beautiful Santa Cruz Mountains. It is a great place to live, work, shop, eat and play! The City of Scotts Valley was incorporated in 1966, and at an early age was known to be a place that business and community thrive. Scotts Valley was named after Hiram Scott, who settled here in 1853, and established the San Augustine Rancho. Hiram built the Greek revival style “Scott House”, now located next to City Hall. This site is now a Santa Cruz County Historical Trust Landmark, and is maintained by the Scotts Valley Historic Society, preserving the home for future and current generations to see a glance of how it was in the early settlement days of Scotts Valley. The amusement industry began in Scotts Valley with the addition Santa’s Village, 6 Scotts Valley Business Directory 2015

a Christmas-themed amusement park, once located on Santa’s Village Road. Featuring rides, games and of course Santa Claus and his team of reindeer, Mrs. Claus and elves, Santa’s Village was one of America’s first theme park chains. The park was sold in 1966, and finally closed in 1979. Today the Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce and many passionate community members keep the spirit of Santa’s Village alive with the annual Christmas Tree Lighting celebration in December. You can view some of Santa’s Village animals at MacDorsa Park in Scotts Valley, as well as more photos and items in the collection kept by the Scotts Valley Historic Society at the Scott House.

As the Mayor of Scotts Valley, I want to welcome one and all to the best little city in the world. – Dene Bustichi

Dene Bustichi Mayor

With great weather, great people, great schools, great parks and great businesses, it is hard to find a better place to live, work or visit than Scotts Valley. With community policing as a priority you will find a very safe, open and friendly community that not only takes care of their community but also always looks to welcome visitors and businesses. The Scotts Valley business community is strong and diverse from high tech corporations and start ups to our home grown small service businesses and everything in between. This is a business friendly community and we welcome those who are looking to move or build a business in Scotts Valley. Creating opportunity, jobs and economic development is always a priority in Scotts Valley. Scotts Valley has some wonderful new projects coming online. While it is important to protect our natural resources especially water and to keep our small town feel, redeveloping underutilized and aging sites has proven to be good not only for economic development but also for our environment and water sources. The new Woodside home development site on Scotts Valley Drive is

offering moderately priced housing, retail stores and is providing the most state of the art water aquifer recharge in the county not to mention all landscaping is irrigated with recycled water. This is just one of several redevelopment projects underway or in planning. New development on these old sites means less water use due to new technology and more quality business coming to our city, a win win. The Scotts Valley Town Center is once again on track which is a long anticipated shopping, living, dining Town Center, which will be a state of the art facility, connecting to Skypark, the best park in Santa Cruz County. The Town Center will bring the best of shopping, dining, housing and open space to create an environmentally and pedestrian friendly experience we can all be proud of. Lastly, but certainly not least, is our great park system with acres of open space, walking trails, Skate Park, Dog Park, large open sports fields, historic features such as the Scott House as well as our New Community Garden and coming soon a 9,000 square foot Performing Arts Theatre. Scotts Valley is a great place to play, keep in shape and be entertained. This is but a snapshot of what Scotts Valley has to offer and we welcome all to visit, shop, do business or move to Scotts Valley and join us in our little paradise. Welcome! Sincerely,

De ne Bust ic hi

The Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce is known for doing events and attracting people to Scotts Valley to play, eat, shop and stay locally. Every year the Chamber of Commerce helps to organize and provide volunteers for a number of events that help add to the fun of living here and visiting here! During the warmer months, Scotts Valley is host to the Scotts Valley Farmers Market. Started in 2009 with the City of Scotts Valley, the market

represents farmers and specialty food purveyors along with cook-to-order food. This local market is the place for the Scotts Valley community to get their fill of fresh, healthy, locally grown fruits and vegetables. During the summer months, SCCFM music series showcases local music and there is a shaded cafe seating area, along with space for the young ones to hang out and play. The market provides unlimited free parking and is located next to Sky Park and is across the from the new Scotts Valley Library. No one in the county does Fourth of July like Scotts Valley! Classic cars, festive costumes,

and community parade floats begin the festivities at the Scotts Valley Parade on Scotts Valley Drive. The entire city comes out, including the Mayor, City Officials, families, business owners and the surrounding community. As the parade ends the crowd heads to Skypark, where blankets are thrown out on the grass, popcorn and candy are munched, as people ready for the only firework show in town. Last year the show drew in thousands from

Santa Cruz, San Jose and San Lorenzo Valley. It was a recordbreaking year, and a ton of fun! One of the Scotts Valley Chamber’s most recognized events is the Scotts Valley Art & Wine Festival, held annually in August, at beautiful Skypark. The festival began sixteen years ago as “Art Under the Oaks”, with a small number of artists and wineries selling their wares; and has evolved into a festival with hundreds of artists, kids activities, live music, local wineries and breweries, and so much more! The festival offers free admission and is carefully juried to ensure the art sold is unique and authentic. Last

year we had a great lineup of local bands, California artists and the weather was perfect for enjoying food, wine and fun with neighbors and visitors to the area. This festival positively affects the entire Valley and brings in people from all over the county and Silicon Valley to shop, stay and play with us! In October, come enjoy Scotts Valley’s very own Glass Pumpkin Patch. Meet local glass artists as you browse a park lawn filled with hundreds of the most exquisite pumpkins, all one-of-a-kind creations, and only from our local artisans. You wont want to miss this one. Every November the Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce and community come together to nominate select and celebrate those people and businesses who make living in Scotts Valley a pleasure. The Community Awards

Dinner celebrates the Alvin Scarborough Memorial Man of the Year, Woman of the Year, Business of the Year, Educator of the Year, Beautification Project of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Sharemi Ullestad Memorial Youth of the Year, and the Organization of the Year. Awardees represent the many outstanding individuals and those groups who go above and beyond and make a positive difference. The year could not be complete in a small town without a Christmas celebration, especially in a town where there is a road named after

Santa’s Village and a rich history of Christmas spirit! Come down to the Scotts Valley Community Center in early December for our spectacular Christmas Tree Lighting Festival. Take in the smells of apple cider, the warmth of smiling children and the exuberance of Santa and all the magic he brings with him! Watch live performances from local schools, dance academies and musicians. Sing holiday carols, and welcome Santa Claus. We’ve added horse-carriage rides and many other attractions to delight children and adults of all ages. No matter what the season, Scotts Valley is host to a number of fun events and things to do for our residents and visitors. Come spend a little time here and see what we have to offer!

Part of the attraction to Scotts Valley is the natural beauty, set under the redwoods and oak trees, lending to the variety of activities one can do here. The warm weather allows for many outdoor activities and therefore Scotts Valley boasts some of the most beautiful parks in Santa Cruz County. A favorite day would be to start on a summer Saturday morning with fresh fruits and veggies bought at the Scotts Valley Farmer’s Market. Or maybe even stay a while during one of their “Pop-up Breakfasts”, featuring gourmet chefs and fresh ingredients from local farm stands. Continue this day down the block and pick up something to read at the Scotts Valley Library, enjoy the art displayed there on your way through the aisles of books. When you’ve got something to read, walk over to the park. On your way, you will notice Scotts Valley Artisans’ mural of Skypark, hearkening back to Scott’s Valley’s history when Skypark was an airport. Once at Skypark you can continue along the paths, or stop with your favorite furry friend at the Scotts Valley’s Bark

ABOUT SCOTTS VALLEY CHAMBER

s co t ts valley b u s ine ss di rec tor y

The business community can have a major impact on the form that our town takes.

It is important that we keep informed and maintain a voice as the very fabric of our economy takes form. The Board of Directors of the Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce is committed to representing our business members’ interests in this growth and improving the community for future generations. The Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce offers many ways for our members to get the most out of your membership dollars. Our active Chamber members’ involvement has a positive effect on the success of our community. There are many opportunities the Chamber can provide to support our mission to grow Scotts Valley while sustaining our small town appeal. The Chamber hosts Business Networking Mixers throughout the year. Attending a mixer is a great way to make connections in our business community. The Chamber of Commerce hosts mixers every fourth Thursday from 5:30-7pm, at a different business every month. We recommend that you introduce yourself at these Chamber events to at least six people you have never met before. This is your chance to get your business card out to interested parties and to connect with businesses who might be a future reference or friend to you. We also hold a raffle at all of our mixers, and you are welcome to bring a donated item, with your business card attached. By donating a raffle item, your 44 Scotts Valley Business Directory 2015

business will be highlighted and the proceeds will go towards supporting Chamber services. The Chamber hosts many events in our community. We are proud to host the Annual Community Awards

Dinner, the Art & Wine Festival, the Christmas Tree Lighting Festival, the Scotts Valley Glass Pumpkin Patch, and other community gatherings. Another way to get your business name out there and to gain exposure to our community is to volunteer your time at a Chamber event. By participating or becoming a sponsor for a Chamber event, like the Scotts Valley Art & Wine Festival, you have an ability to further your connections to our small town community. This Festival alone draws thousands of people into Scotts Valley to shop, stay and play in our lovely community, and it happens every year because of our great volunteers and sponsors! The Chamber advocates for you. We provide member referrals and relocation packets to local REALTORS® and visitors. It is important that we encourage those coming

to Scotts Valley to shop and stay here as a way to support growth in our local economy. For every dollar that is spent here locally, we are providing money back to the community and that not only supports business, but also our schools and the infrastructure that makes up Scotts Valley. We stay on top of trends. The Chamber is careful to watch trends in business advertising and we have updated our website, online calendar and are now advertising on social media. 20 15 SCOTTS VALLEY’S SECRETS OF

s co t t s valley b usiness di rec tor y

SUCCESS

Robert Aldana, 2014-15 Man of the Year

How One Community Does it Right One particular thriving California community is Scotts Valley, located in the Santa Cruz Mountains in Northern California. Within minutes from beaches, state parks, outdoor living adventures as well as being 30 minutes from major cities like San Jose, California, it is a community of approximately 11,500-12,000 residents that thrives and is driven by so many factors such as strong real estate appreciation, highly rated schools, educated residents and the county’s lowest crime rate, based on a study recently released by the FBI. Good Schools The schools in Scotts Valley are some of the highest rated schools in the state as reported by the California Department of Education. Because of this, real estate is in high demand as are most communities that have highly rated schools. Higher education gives better job opportunities at a higher pay schedule in most cases. This leads to employees who are higher educated and have more opportunities to advance their career.

ers also are invested in their community and become more a part of the community as contributors. The Crime Factor Another factor and result of a higher education is the fact that educated employees have more job opportunities than those who are not as educated. It is not a coincidence that all of the above factors like higher education and higher homeownership rates contribute to a low crime rate and desirable community like Scotts Valley. It is like a well-oiled machine with many parts running smoothly that make this community thrive and make it a great place to raise a family. It’s never too late for change for any community and the secrets to future success can be learned by following the success story of this little town because they did it right. © 2014 Robert Aldana, Publisher of MyScotts Valley.com Excerpt reprinted with permission

Home Ownership The home-ownership rate in Scotts Valley is 75% versus the state average of 56.7%. That is a whopping 18.3% higher than the rest of the state. It has been proven that homeowners tend to care more for their homes because it is, after all, their property and investment. High owner-occupied communities are usually another strong key selling point when marketing a home for sale. Homeown46 Scotts Valley Business Directory 2015
