Arvest focuses on the needs of our communities By Scott Cutlip

Arvest Bank might not have as much national name recognition as Walmart, as it has locations in only four states, while Walmart is an international brand, but it does share more than just recognizability in Arkansas with Walmart. The Waltons purchased an interest in the Bank of Bentonville in 1961 and branched out from there through acquisitions and opening banks in areas which didn’t have a bank previously, according to Roger Holroyd, President and CEO of Arvest Bank in Fort Smith and River Valley. Arvest Bank now has approximately 270 branches in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri, as well as more than $20 billion in assets. The Fort Smith region covers from Russellville to Fort Smith and south to Idabel, Oklahoma, with 20 branches in Arkansas and four in Oklahoma. Arvest Bank has approximately 6,600 associates company-wide and about 280 in the Fort Smith region. Arvest also has shared services associates, such as contact center personnel, accountants, and internal auditors, who provide services to all 14 regions. Approximately 250 of them are officed in the Fort Smith region. “We really try to be a one-stop shop for our customers,” said Holroyd. “Lending is very important to us. We have all kinds of deposit

accounts; we have a credit card operation. We have our own mortgage company that both originates mortgages and services them once the loan has been made. We have an investment division. We also have treasury management, which is cash management services for businesses.” According to Holroyd, while Arvest Bank is a large entity, it focuses on communities by breaking into 14 community markets such as the Fort Smith area, with each market having a dedicated senior management team and advisory board with lending authority. Each region operates with a high level of independence and autonomy. “That really allows us to focus on the needs of our communities and to make customer service a priority, while also bringing the financial resources of a big bank to the table,” Holroyd said. Arvest’s commitment to the community extends beyond the banking world. According to Holroyd, Arvest has given $3.5 million in corporate gifts, with over $375,000 in the Fort Smith area. Arvest Foundation in the Fort Smith market also contributes an average of $225,000 annually to area non-profits and organizations. Additionally, over 2,000 associates company-wide have

over 35,000 hours of volunteer activities. One of Arvest’s biggest campaigns is Million Meals, an annual event started ten years ago that provides meals for the food insecure. Holroyd said it has funded over 17 million meals since its inception. Asked about any changes that may be coming, Holroyd said the Fort Smith area may see more branches at some point, but pointed out that there will also likely be more ATMs with live teller connection (such as the newest one at the Chaffee Crossing location), which allows the customer to have face-to-face communication with a teller on a video screen as they conduct transactions. “One thing I would like our customers to know is we’ve been working really hard to continue delivering our banking services and exceptional customer service through the pandemic,” Holroyd said. “We appreciate them being patient with us through that process. Our tellers, our branch managers, and our assistant branch managers have been at the forefront of making things work over the last six months with our lobbies closed. And my hat’s off to them in the way they’ve adapted.”

Cherokee Casino in Roland is a choice destination with the local community. “We work hand in hand to provide support through annual school supply drives, Cherokee Nation Angel Project, and various other nonprofit initiatives,” he said. “One of the things about the Cherokee Nation that I’ve been proud of is they invest a lot back into the communities that they do business in.”

Cherokee Casino in Roland was the Cherokee Nation’s first gaming operation, opening 30 years ago as a simple bingo hall. It is one of the integral parts of Cherokee Nation Businesses (CNB), wholly owned by the Cherokee Nation, the nation’s largest Native American community. CNB operates 10 gaming venues throughout northeastern Oklahoma, as well as a horse racing track, hotels, golf courses, and other retail operations, according to Cherokee Casino Roland general manager Chad McReynolds. He said Cherokee Nation is one of the largest employers in northeastern Oklahoma, with over 11,000 employees in all tribal enterprises, including 400 at the Roland casino and hotel. The casino opened in May of 2015, with the hotel opening in November of the same year. “Cherokee Casino has built a lasting reputation for exceptional guest service, exciting atmosphere, and an unmatched dedication to providing a fun, safe, and clean environment for our guests to enjoy,” McReynolds said. “Without question, we’re a choice destination in the River Valley.”

The casino in Roland features over 900 machines, including the latest real video and video poker games. Jackpots and progressives have sometimes grown into the millions. The casino also offers nine table games, including blackjack, Texas Hold ‘Em, and roulette. Roland’s Cherokee Casino also has a hotel on the premises. “It’s a six story hotel, with 120 rooms,” said McReynonds. “Our guests enjoy first class customer service and luxury amenities, such as our beautiful pool, several dining options, and a live music venue.” Additionally, the hotel features nearly 5,000 square feet of convention spaces, suitable for conferences, trade shows, weddings, and other special events. While live music is not currently part of the Cherokee Casino experience, McReynolds looks for it to come back in the future. Past acts have included Billy Ray Cyrus, Dokken, Neal McCoy, and Sarah Evans, as well as other stars in country, classic rock, and 80’s music. McReynolds noted that at each Cherokee Nation property, there is a Community Impact Team, which is dedicated to promoting volunteerism and engagement

The coronavirus has made many area businesses change and adapt, but McReynolds said he is particularly proud of Cherokee Casino’s response. “When the pandemic hit, we were very proactive, putting up safety protocols and procedures that would keep both our staff and our guests in a safe environment,” he said. “We have been well under the percentage of cases here on our property. We want to keep people safe. That’s Cherokee Nation, doing the right thing when it needs to be done.” The casino reopened on June 10 after initially closing in the wake of the coronavirus. Chiropractic is a family passion There’s a reason readers have voted Seubold Chiropractic the best chiropractic clinic five years in a row, according to Seubold. “Our clinic and the name have been around,” he said. “It’s a staple in the area. Dad really did well to make that name well known and for caring for the patients. He put his patients first. We don’t rush them in and rush them out. We give them quality care and try to be very compassionate to their needs, to be very attentive.”

Chiropractic is more than just a career to Dr. Joshua Seubold; it’s a family passion that has existed for four generations. His father, paternal grandparents, and great-grandfather have been in the chiropractic business, going back approximately 100 years. Seubold’s father Torsten, who passed away in 2010, first opened Seubold Chiropractic in 1976. Seubold’s sister, Dr. Jordana Beutelschies, and uncle, Dr. Henry Seubold, both work at the clinic, while Seubold’s wife Lindsay is the office manager. The doctors are helped by two chiropractic assistants, Cassie Thorne and Brooke Metheny. Seubold started spending time at the clinic early. “I can remember being a little kid and running around and getting in trouble while he was working,” Seubold said. “As I got older, it was just a natural inkling that I wanted to do

what my dad did. I actually worked for him my first year in college.” Seubold, a 2009 graduate of Parker College of Chiropractic, believes that the “power that makes the body can also heal the body.” Seubold pointed out some patients go for other methods to fix their issues, and, if those are unable to work, he can help them, including children with asthma issues, babies with colic, or people with digestive issues. “We really rely on the chiropractic adjustment,” Seubold said. “That’s our main go-to treatment, and we offer several different types of adjustment techniques, because some people are going to react differently to a certain technique, and they may need something else. We adjust a lot of little kids, babies, pregnant mamas, so we will have some therapies to aid in soft tissue pain or inflammation.”

Seubold pointed to the positive reviews and comments the clinic has received online. “That would be a sign to at least check us out,” he said. “If a potential patient wants to come in for just a consultation, we’ll set that up at no charge, and they can decide at that point what they want to do. There’s a lot of good chiropractors in town. If I had to pick something that sets us apart, it’s that we just really believe in chiropractic and we really love our patients.” Seubold, a Van Buren resident, is a supporter of that city’s Boys and Girls Club. As someone who played baseball in college, Seubold also champions local sports teams. Seubold, who suffered an aortic aneurysm in 2017, credits his faith to his recovery. “I felt like God just wasn’t finished with me as far as using my skills to help others,” he said. “It really just fortified our belief and interest in Him.” Seubold Chiropractic is located at 5600 Euper Lane. Construction is being done on a new building directly behind the current location. When it is completed, the current building will be made into parking spaces. Jody’s Auto Center, a family tradition for over 35 years to Rupe, Jody’s will also fix flats for free and offers free road hazard on any tires bought from Jody’s. Although Jody’s is a repair shop, Rupe suggested that it is one of the only local shops where a customer can shop for tires on their website. Jody’s has 29 repair bays among its three locations, as well as the towing service. It also provides financing on its website through Synchrony, with no interest financing on purchases over $199 if they are paid off within six months.

By Scott Cutlip When you have trouble with your car, the first place Joseph Rupe wants you to think of is Jody’s Auto. “We’re not a collision place. And we don’t internally rebuild transmissions, but pretty much everything else that has to do with a car, from oil changes to replacing an engine to alignments, brakes, electrical, diagnosing, check engine lights, tires--we do everything,” Rupe, co-owner of Jody’s Auto with his father, said. “We want to be the one phone call if somebody has car trouble at all.” Besides being the one place to call, Rupe also believes that it’s the customer service Jody’s Auto provides that keeps customers coming back. “It’s already stressful when someone’s having a problem with their transportation,” he said. “We try to make it as easy on them as possible.”

“Unless there’s some kind of crazy problem, we’re gonna get a car in and out. We have people’s best interest at heart, and we try to take care of people the right way. If we do make a mistake, we try to make it right. We know if we take care of our customers, then they’ll take care of us.” Jody’s also tries to make repairs and services affordable for customers, with oil changes starting at $24.95. Brake jobs start at $139.95, $295.95 if the rotors need to be replaced. Alignments start at $59.95. There are coupons on the website for other services. According

Jody’s Auto is continuing a tradition started by Rupe’s father, Jody, when he opened his first location at the 3015 Towson Ave address in 1984, using his part of the family farm as collateral. When Joseph Rupe came on with the company, after graduating from the University of Arkansas, his father told him to do what’s right, even if in the short term it costs you, because customers would keep coming back if you took care of them the right way. Jody stepped back from the business five or six years ago, but left Jody’s Auto in his son’s hands to continue the consistency that has brought customers in for over 35 years. Jody’s Auto has three locations, two in Fort Smith on Towson Ave and Phoenix Ave, and one in Van Buren. Their website is jodysauto.com.

That includes free pick-up and delivery when the customer spends over $75 (and a minimal fee of $10 if spending is under $75) and if the vehicle is within Fort Smith or Van Buren city limits. Jody’s will also provide shuttle service if a customer needs to bring a car in to get repairs done. “We’re not a shop that’s going to hold on to a car for two or three weeks,” Rupe said. Linsey E. & Co. has hustle and muscle best REAL ESTATE AGENT By Scott Cutlip

It shouldn’t have come as too much of a surprise that a five-year-old who spent time at her grandfather’s realty office would enter the realty business, as her great-grandfather and her uncle had. The granddaughter of Jimmie Taylor Sr. had realty in her blood, and after graduating from Southside and then from the University of Arkansas with a degree in psychology, Linsey Yates began her career. Yates started at Ramona Roberts Realty in 2002, the same year she graduated college, and worked there for 16 years. She then reflected on where she was headed and made the decision to make her own path in the realty world. In February of 2018, she and fellow Ramona Roberts realtor Vicki Bush, who she had collaborated with on listings since 2008, struck out on their own to open Linsey E. & Co. Realtors. Yates described the two of them as “hustle and muscle,” with Yates providing the former and Bush, who deals mainly with finance and marketing, the latter. “She’s just really an amazing negotiator,” Bush said of her partner. “Everyone likes Linsey. She has built and continued relationships. It’s very rare that Linsey sells a house for someone or to someone

that she doesn’t continue a relationship with later on.” Yates has sold over 800 houses in her career, covering over $100 million in volume. Bush, who pointed out that one of Yates’s other qualities is her humbleness, said Yates is consistently in the top five in the River Valley area when it comes to volume of sales. In a field in which, according to the National Association of Realtors, approximately 87 percent of realtors fail within the first five years, Yates has stood the test of time, with hard work, humor, and relationship-building. “She works all the time,” Bush said. “In real estate, it’s seven days a week, 24 hours a day. We don’t set our schedule; our customers set the schedule. She’s one of the hardest workers I’ve ever met. She doesn’t like the spotlight, but she deserves it.” Bush pointed out that Yates’s psychology degree even helps. “One day we might be dealing with someone who has lost their parents; the same day we may be dealing with somebody that’s expecting a new baby,” Bush said. “We deal with people who are getting divorced, going into nursing homes. There all kinds of

people and all kinds of personalities and all kinds of moods, and she is really able to understand people and their thought processes. According to Yates, what makes Linsey E. & Co. different than other companies is that she oversees every transaction personally. “If we had so many agents, we wouldn’t be allowed,” she said. “We wouldn’t have the time to do that. I really feel like we just really care about people and our staff. I just feel we are a group of people that really cares about the city, and if you get too big, you don’t really get the time to know everybody or stay on top of things.” The company now has 10 agents, in addition to Yates and Bush. While they have sold as far north as Fayetteville and as far west as Tulsa, for the most part, the sales area is within the River Valley. The company is a huge supporter of the University of Arkansas Fort Smith and Northside High School, as well as Girls Inc., including hosting the Women of Vision conference. Linsey E. & Co. Washburn joins the Harco Group, emphasizes keeping it simple

On the heels of winning best real estate agent in 2019’s Best of the Best awards, Gina Washburn found herself in a unique position. In February she was approached by Andy Hearn of the Harco Group. Washburn had been working at Assurance Realty for over five years. “I wasn’t looking to switch,” Washburn said. “I was really established at Assurance, and they treated me really well. I really didn’t have a desire to switch, but I really did like Andy and what I knew about them as agents.” Hearn felt Washburn was the perfect component to add to the team. “She sells a lot; she brings a lot of attention,” he said. “I’m a really good starter. I love to buy a house and get to do the design. I have all this mess of things, and I can dump it onto Gina, and she makes it very pretty. She makes everything go together. She makes our social media presence great. She makes the wildness of everything we’re doing look great to the public eye. She treats everyone like that. She’s better than me. She does everything she can out of the goodness of her heart, but she also does it so she can sell the house. You look for the person who treats the janitor like they treat the CEO--that’s Gina.”

The Harco Group was started by Alex Harris ten years ago. Harris had been buying homes nationwide and flipping them, and needed a brokerage to run them through. It’s only been within the last couple of years that the Harco Group has also started in real estate, conducting retail, residential, and commercial sales in the local area, with Hearn overseeing this part. The Harco Group currently has six real estate agents.

This philosophy is exemplified by two common hashtags on their social media: #simpleasblackandwhite and #jstfh, meaning “just sell the freaking house.” “At the end of the day, our goal is to sell the house, and there are so many deals that fall through because certain agents can’t let go stuff that doesn’t really matter,” said Washburn. “We really want to emphasize keeping this simple and making sure everything’s done correctly.”

“I wanted Harco to be exactly opposite of what I see in real estate,” said Hearn. “We’re only interested in selling houses and collecting paychecks. That’s it. So there’s not a lot of emotions involved. We don’t pretend to be that person. We treat all our clients the same, whether it’s a $50,000 house or a $5 million house. Everybody gets the same process that every other person gets. We’re not scared to make hard phone calls. A lot of our job is unfortunate, and we just come to the phone and say, hey this is the unfortunate news; what do you want to do? We don’t avoid it.”

The Harco Group, like Washburn, has seen an increase in sales this year, with Hearn estimating they’ll do 35 to 40 percent over last year’s numbers. The company made it into the top 5 for best real estate company.

When Washburn joined the Harco Group, its Facebook following was about 100 people, and she has increased the following to almost 1,300. Washburn said that, despite COVID-19, this year has been her most successful, doubling the volume she had the previous year.

O’Neal Real Estate has record year in 2020 best REAL ESTATE AGENCY By Scott Cutlip

Although O’Neal Real Estate hasn’t been in business long, it’s quite familiar to Best of the Best voters, who have put it in the top three for the last four years, including first place last year. Aaron and Laura O’Neal started selling real estate in 2005 as a part-time effort to supplement their teacher incomes, but it wasn’t until a little over five years ago that they decided to take the plunge and make it a full-time business. Aaron taught history for 15 years and Laura taught English for 10. During the first year their company was open, both of them still taught. After the first year, Aaron stopped to concentrate fully on the business. Laura did the same a year later. At first, it was just the two of them, but after a few months they picked up other agents. O’Neal has grown rapidly since then. The company has offices in Fort Smith, Roland, and Sallisaw, as well as an office in Poteau that opened in September. There are approximately 50 employees working throughout the offices, with the majority of sales in Crawford, Sebastian,

Sequoyah, and Le Flore Counties. In a year in which many businesses have seen losses and cutbacks, O’Neal Real Estate is looking at a record year, closing on $100 million in sales. O’Neal sells residential, commercial, and farms. Aaron said that what makes O’Neal Real Estate different is its culture, the way in which agents work with each other, the clients, and the community. “We’re much different than a lot of companies,” he said. “Our agents are the only point of contact. We don’t have transaction coordinators or anything like that. You don’t get passed around to different people. I would say it’s like uncontrollable passion meets unexplainable talent. Our agents are always thinking outside the box. When they do something, they typically do it with excellence.” Not only is it a locally-owned company, but it is also one that believes in giving back to the local community, with many of the agents involved in the community, as well as contributing to larger agencies such as the Salvation Army.

O’Neal compared selling real estate to baseball he used to coach when he was a teacher. “If you can get on base three times out of 10, you’re a hall of famer,” he said. “In real estate, it’s like that. You have to get used to things falling apart; you have to get used to failure. You’ve got to pick yourself back up. Because it’s going to happen; I don’t care what kind of agent you are. There’s always going to be moments where things fall apart, and how you react is the key to your success.” O’Neal also pointed to marketing as another area in which O’Neal Real Estate is different from other real estate companies. Their online presence goes well beyond most companies. Sofa City has been around since May of 2014, but owner Bryan Whitmire’s furniture background goes back much further than that. Whitmire’s father Raymond is the founder of Furniture Factory Outlet, and Whitmire worked at FFO for 25 years. After FFO sold to a private equity group, Whitmire was out of the furniture business for a few years before opening his flagship store in Fort Smith. Sofa City now has six stores, three in Arkansas and three in Missouri. Whitmire estimates there are 50 employees throughout the six stores. “We’re a full line furniture store,” said Whitmire. “We offer every category. We sell bedroom and dining room. We have a great mattress business; we’re a TempurPedic dealer and do very well with those. We try to offer a good, a better, and a best in each category, so that we can fulfill the needs of more than just one demographic out there. We try most importantly to provide a good shopping experience with excellent customer service.”

In addition to TempurPedic, Sofa City also offers brands such as Homestretch, Benchcraft, Coast to Coast, Best Home Furnishings, Sealy, and Franklin. While Sofa City has furniture to fill every room of the house, Whitmire says the sofa is still king when it comes to the number one selling product. Sofa City offers same-day delivery. “We’ve hung our hat on the positioning statement, ‘buy it today, enjoy it tonight,’ since we opened the door in Fort Smith six years ago,” said Whitmire. Additionally, Sofa City offers no-interest financing, no credit needed lease-to-purchase, and layaway (terms and conditions vary by store). Whitmire also believes in giving to the community, donating to the Boys and Girls Club and to the Special Olympics, which Sofa City has done every year. They also have done a lot with schools in the area, particularly Alma High School. Whitmire wants customers to know that “we’re a locally owned small business, and we’re intent on making sure that every customer is 100% satisfied with their shopping

UCA teaches Christ at the center of everything By Scott Cutlip

Since 2005, when Fort Smith Christian School, River Valley Christian School, and Harvest Time Christian School combined to become Union Christian Academy (UCA), it has been one of the River Valley’s premier private schools, evidenced by previous Best of the Best wins. According to superintendent Ricky Massengale, the interdenominational school has a core doctrine of faith that all students and faculties are asked to subscribe to. “We’re going to teach Christ at the center of everything,” he said. UCA currently has 176 students, from preschool to grade 12, with a 15 to 1 student to teacher ratio in high school and approximately 12 to 1 in other grades. It is the only accredited pre-K-through-12 private Christian school in the River Valley area, being accredited through ANSAA, ACSI, AdvanceED, NFNSSSA, and Better Beginnings (for preschool). Massengale pointed out that UCA is above national and state averages in standardized tests, as well as having a 100% graduation and collegeacceptance rate. During the COVID-19 pandemic, UCA only missed one day of school, due to virtual classes, which

Massengale says also allows for students to livestream the classes even for non-coronavirus reasons. “We function just like a public school,” said Massengale. “We have a math teacher. We have a science teacher. We have AP options. We have concurrent classes. We have band, art, and Spanish. We’re well-rounded in our options.” What makes UCA different is its Christ-centeredness. Massengale identified three things that are expected: for students, faculty, and employees to display a Christlike character of love, grace, and accountability; to have a Christlike work ethic; and to have Christ-centered reasoning. “We have a competitive academic program, we have a great athletic program--but we do all this with Christ at the center,” said Massengale. “When we’re doing chemistry, we can talk about the Creator and Christ. We can talk about human geography with a Christian worldview.” UCA does have a top-level tuition, which can be viewed on the website, but the school has an income-based tuition, on a first-come, first-served basis, which provides a 20 to 65 percent discount. “It’s not a one-size-fits-all tuition,” said Massengale. “We work with families

within income brackets, and we try to offer qualifying tuition that says we’re looking not for equal pay, but equal sacrifice from families.” In addition to local students, UCA has welcomed foreign students. When UCA first started, there would be two to three foreign students, but recently there have been between eight and 10 each year from Vietnam, Spain, Taiwan, and other countries. The students come in with an understanding that UCA is a Christian school. “We just expose them to it,” said Massengale. “We don’t force them to believe or convert or anything. We give them a safe place to ask those questions. They are a vital part of who we are. They enrich our school as much as we enrich their lives. They’re getting the American experience and American education, but we’re enriched because they’re bringing their life experiences and their culture.” UCA also has a robust athletic program, offering basketball, baseball, track and field, volleyball, football, tennis, and other activities. The school has won state championships in volleyball and was the HCAA (2A) champion last year. Union Christian Academy is located at 4201 Windsor Drive.
