Another weekend, another rodeo

Sharp turn

Conway Springs event is Friday and Saturday By Sam Jack Star-Argosy sjack@tsnews.com

The 55th annual Conway Springs Arena Club Rodeo will be held this Friday and Saturday at the arena. The action starts at 8 p.m. both nights. Gate admission is $5, and children under 6 get in free. New this year, the rodeo will include a pole race for all-terrain vehicles. “If you live out in the country, an ATV is a common tool, so there’s a good chance people involved in the rodeo have ATVs,” said Eric Anderson, treasurer of the arena club. “It’s also something that spectators in the stands will be

interested in.” All the traditional rodeo events will be accounted for, too, including ranch bronc riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, women’s barrel racing, team roping and bull riding. Concessions will be on sale. “We do this to support our club, and this is our big money-maker for the year,” Anderson said. “Our club also puts on a barrel race series throughout the summer, 4-H groups have access to (the arena), and later in the year we’re going to help support a youth rodeo association. This event helps to support all those activities.” The arena is located off of 12th Street, just northwest of Shinn Field.

Anthony Handlin gives a wave just minutes before Argonia High School’s graduation. The ceremony was delayed for a bit to allow one of the seniors – who got stuck in traffic behind a crash on the Kansas Turnpike – time to arrive. Sumner County Economic Development (SCED) recently commissioned KanOkla Design Studio to create videos showcasing local communities in Sumner County. When SCED decided to improve its website, executive director Stacey Davis did some research. “I decided to look and see what other counties across the country were doing, and about 95 percent of them had videos showcasing their communities,” said Davis.

Currently, nine videos of local towns – including Conway Springs and Argonia – and one focusing on Sumner County have been produced. They are available on YouTube (search for “KanOkla Design Studio”) and will be linked from the SCED website, www.gosumner.com, which is being renovated. The videos are an effort to bring attention to small communities and help them grow. Communities like Argonia and Conway Springs pay dues to be part of SCED. These community videos are one of the ways
