Music, food and more – memories await at the Fair

You hear it all the time: “There’s something for everybody.” But when it comes to the Sedgwick County Fair, that claim is true. There’s no one thing that I look forward to the most. I’m not sure I could create a top 10 list of my favorite things without feeling like I was leaving several things out. This year’s Fair has found something of a sweet spot. Over the past few years, the Sedgwick County Fair Association has tried some new things. It feels like they now have a line-up of events and activities that is as strong as any I’ve seen. There’s a renewed emphasis on music at the Open Air Stage. There will be live music each night of the Fair. Mix in two nights of the always-popular Fair’s Got Talent as well as the Saturday night street dance, and you have a great selection. There will be a blast from the past as Big Fat Fun plays on Saturday night. This Fair favorite went on hiatus a few years

Travis Mounts Managing Editor Times-Sentinel Newspapers, LLC ago, they began playing again but only a few times a year. Fans of the band need to be sure they show up. The Adam Capps Band has become a new favorite, and Capps and his mates return for Friday’s country music night. The Jason Boyd Band will open up the night. The Molly Neeley Trio has been build-

ing a name around Wichita recently, and will make their Fair debut on Thursday night. Best off all, all that music is free! Also back this year is the Ranch Rodeo. This twist on the traditional rodeo debuted last year and was an instant hit. Of course, the Demolition Derby is the biggest single event at the Fair, and is a fantastic finale on Saturday. Advance tickets for both events are available now online at ourcountyfair. com. When you talk about the Sedgwick County Fair, you have to talk about food. You can eat all three meals a day on the fairgrounds. Both church booths offer breakfast, and by lunchtime, everybody is open and filling the air with many different, delicious smells. This year’s list of vendors includes many favorites, recent additions and at least one new vendor. Come hungry. Another major attraction is the Pride of Texas Carnival, one of the nation’s top

carnivals. For the second year, you can get discount wristbands for any night of the Fair. The key is to buy them in advance. You can now do that online at the Fair’s website or in person at Cheney City Hall. Finally, take advantage of all the free things that the Fair offers. When my kids were small, we always spent time in the animal barns. They loved seeing the sheep and goats, poultry, rabbits, swine and cattle. 4-H competitions offer two entire buildings of things to see, like rockets, garden items, prepared foods, handmade clothing, photographs, and a wide array of arts and crafts. With all that goes on, most of my memories center on the people. It’s great family entertainment, a chance to hang out with close friends, and a place you can see many faces you may not have seen since the previous year. We’ll see you at this year’s Sedgwick County Fair, July 18-21.

Ranch Rodeo returns for another round of fun By Sam Jack

Youth line up for the start of the calf scramble at last year’s Ranch Rodeo. The event is back for a second year at the Sedgwick County Fair.

Times-Sentinel Newspapers sjack@tsnews.com

After a successful debut in 2017, the Sedgwick County Ranch Rodeo is back, featuring three team competitions that will highlight the tasks ranchers actually complete while working on today’s ranches. “It’s more about seeing what they do on a day-to-day basis, to see who can do it faster or better,” said Matthew Haukap, who once again is organizing the ranch rodeo along with wife, Corrine Haukap. The first of the rodeo’s three competitions is ranch bronc riding, an event that also appears in conventional rodeos. The difference is that Fair competitors will use normal working saddles, not special competition saddles. “It’s to simulate when they’re training a new horse who’s never had a saddle on; they buck sometimes,” Haukap said. “It’s

File photo

about who can ride better or longer.” In the second event, teams will compete to see who can sort individual animals out of a herd of steers the fastest. “Out on the ranch, if you have some that are sick or need to get shots, but you don’t need the whole herd, you have to break out the ones you need,” Haukap said. The final event is another test of cowboys’ ability to handle cattle.

“It’s kind of a double event,” Haukap said. “There will be a truck with a trailer in the arena, and the four team members will turn out two steers. One steer, they’ll rope it, tie it down and use a piece of chalk to draw an ‘X’ on it; that’ll simulate giving it a shot out in the pasture. The other half is to rope the other steer, get it loaded into the trailer and take all the ropes off it. The time will stop when one

steer’s tied and the other’s in the trailer.” Between the adult competitions, Haukap is planning a calf scramble. Fairgoers aged 12 and younger can chase calves around the arena, and those who manage to snatch a ribbon off a calf ’s tail will win a prize. Haukap anticipates 10 teams of four will participate in the ranch rodeo. “Most of them will be working ranchers. You’ve got ones from the Flint Hills and down by Medicine Lodge,” he said. Those interested in competing in the rodeo should contact the stock company, Kraft Rodeo; contact information can be found at www.kraftrodeo.com. While at the Ranch Rodeo, stop by the pony wheel, which will be offering rides to kids. The ranch rodeo is Thursday, July 19, at the Fairgrounds Arena, with action starting at 7 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for kids ages 4 to 12; kids ages 3 and under are admitted free.

Red dirt country band rounds out music lineup By Travis Mounts

Times-Sentinel Newspapers news@tsnews.com

Last year’s Sedgwick County Fair placed a much larger focus on local and regional music acts playing on the Open Air Stage, with the busy lane for food and commercial vendors – and lots of fairgoers – in close proximity. Organizers said that move was well-received, and that means plenty of live music again this summer. “This is an awesome free music event. There’s something every night, and it’s free. People responded really well last year. We had good crowds,” said music organizer Liz Johnson. “We’re really committed to the local band scene. The groups that have a following and people who want to hear them play.” The Adam Capps Band has become a recent favorite, with Capps – a former

teacher in the Goddard school district – prepping for his third straight appearance. He opened for Neal McCoy two years ago, and played the Open Air Stage in 2017. See story on Page 10. Big Fat Fun marks big, fat anniversary By Sam Jack

“Going back to when we first started performing, we were probably doing 30 or 40 shows a year. Then the band, overnight, got really popular, and we went to doing 150 to 200 shows a year, covering Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri,” Shire said. The group went on hiatus in 2013. When they did a reunion show in 2016, their fans showed them how much they had been missed. Close to 6,500 people showed up for a reunion show sponsored by KEYN. Now the group is active seasonally and does eight to 10 shows per year; mostly fairs, festivals and private events. Shire said that Fairgoers can expect a high-energy concert with few breaks in the action. “In 20 years, we’ve covered 800 tunes, which is a lot,” he said. “For the set list for this concert, a third of the show is our most popular tunes that people love us to perform, a third is songs that we haven’t played in like 10 or 15 years, and the last third is brand new stuff we’ve never played before. It’s a good mix.”

Times-Sentinel Newspapers sjack@tsnews.com

At 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, Sedgwick County Fairgoers will welcome party rock band Big Fat Fun to the Open Air Arena. As its name suggests, the band is all about fun, according to lead singer and founder Jason Shire. “Whenever we pick songs, it always comes down to certain criteria. A song has to be one everyone knows and loves, and it has to be a fun song that people want to dance and sing along to,” Shire said. “That covers all genres, so we cover that type of music from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and current music, and we play all styles: rock, soul, funk, hip-hop, country, hair metal. If it’s a fun song that people know and love, we play it.” Big Fat Fun got started in 1998, so this is the group’s 20th anniversary year. All the members are from south central Kansas.

Times-Sentinel Newspapers serious about performing, although she still teaches elementary music in a Wichita school. With the trio behind her, they are able to play bigger venues. “We have a bigger sound,” she said. The trio includes Ashley Reichenborn on percussion. Reichenborn, who was been with the trio since the start, doesn’t play a traditional drum set. Instead, she performs either on djembe, a West African percussion instrument, or the cajon, a box-shaped percussion piece that originated in Peru. At the Sedgwick County Fair, the trio will be rounded out by Brandon Ellis. The trio recently lost its original guitarist. Ellis is one of two musicians who play all over the Wichita area who are filling in with Neeley. “We play nearly every place in Wichita that has live music,” Neeley said. She would like to see the circuit expand to include other Kansas cities and surrounding states. The Molly Neeley Trio does primarily covers from a variety of genres. That includes current hits, classic rock like the Eagles and the Beatles, plus alternative and indie songs. “We like to play a wide range,” Neeley explained. “Sometimes when we sing indie numbers, we need to introduce it.” She enjoys the alternative and indie songs the most, but grew up listening to Stevie Wonder, the Eagles and Michael Jackson, among other classic acts. This year’s Fair won’t be the trio’s first time playing in a busy, outdoor setting. The group played a Fourth of July celebration last year. “It had that outdoor stage feel. Hopefully, people will come join in and be part of the performance,” Neeley said. Learn more about the Molly Neeley Trio on their Facebook page.

Friday headliner: For Adam Capps, the beat goes on By Sam Jack

Times-Sentinel Newspapers sjack@tsnews.com

The Adam Capps Band will play the Sedgwick County Fair for the third year in a row, rocking the Open Air Arena starting at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, July 20. Capps is a very busy musician; he averaged three shows a week last year. Despite the high volume of performances, he has found that he rarely does multiple shows at the same event. “I don’t do repeats very often, but we thoroughly enjoy playing out there,” he said. “The Fair is pretty much the only one we do year after year.” Capps is a Wichita State graduate and former Eisenhower Middle School teacher. He has been making music full time for almost three years now. “Somebody asked me, ‘How much longer are you going to keep on trying to make it?’ My response to that was, ‘I make a living doing it, and I enjoy doing what I do.’ I feel like I made it already, so no matter what people say, the beat is going to go on for me.” “The Beat Goes On” is the title of the lead single from Capps’ upcoming album, also titled “The Beat Goes On.”

Capps is aiming to release the album in September, but Fairgoers will get to preview several of the tracks. Last October, the Adam Capps Band released a five-song EP, including Capps’ most successful single to date, “One More Song.” “As of three weeks ago, we ended up being on the top 60 on the country music radio charts,” Capps said. “It was the only charting song that we’ve had. ... Last year, there was a particular night when I got done with a show, and I was coming home from Colorado. It was a really good, fun show, and I was saying, ‘I wish I could’ve played one more song.’” Capps wrote “One More Song” on a napkin and kept driving. He ended up writing the rest of the lyrics on the same napkin. “The whole idea on it is just that when you’re having a great night, you wish you could play one more song,” Capps said. “It’s upbeat, just a fun driving tune, and just a fun song to listen to.” The Adam Capps Band lineup includes Capps, lead guitar player Bill Hemmert, rhythm/lead guitarist Jacob Condreay, drummer Danny Burt and bass player Dave Kilgore. For more information on the Adam Capps Band, and for a free download of “One More Song,” visit www.adamcappsmusic.com.

Jason Boyd fits the Red Dirt Country genre, mixing classic country with Texas blues, southern rock and his own style developed playing as a youth in his father’s bands. Boyd has years of experience playing in central Kansas and northern Oklahoma, and the Jason Boyd Band can be seen all over the Sunflower State and the Sooner State. He cites Merle Haggard and Mark Chestnutt, along with his father, as his biggest musical influences. The Jason Boyd Band will kick off country music night at the Sedgwick County Fair on Friday, July 20. The band will play at 7 p.m. at the Open Air Stage, warming up the crowd for the Adam Capps Band.

Cheney girl is 4-H state project winner By Sam Jack

Times-Sentinel Newspapers sjack@tsnews.com

Cheney 4-Her Ann Knoblauch, 15, was recently named the entomology project winner for the state of Kansas. Ann has autism, and like many people with autism, she likes to dig deep into chosen subjects and become an expert. Entomology, the study of insects, is one of her favorite pursuits. She enjoys every part of the entomology project, from going out with nets to catch bugs, to learning about their life cycles, to pinning and displaying them for the county and state fairs. “Entomology is the main reason I joined 4-H,” Ann wrote. “I always thought insects were interesting, watching and seeing all the variety of them. I remember the first time I saw a box filled with insects, I knew that I wanted to do that myself.” Last year, Ann had 350 pinned and labeled insects. For this year’s Fair, she is moving up to the advanced level of the project, meaning that she is allowed to add 100 bugs to her collectino. “With 450 bugs, it’s a little bit harder now to locate (new) insects; you’ve really got to look,” said Ann’s mother, Renee. “A lot of times she’ll catch them, look and wonder, ‘Is that one I already have?’ Sometimes you’re not 100 percent sure.” Ann’s state award was based on consistent involvement in the entomology

project, a high level of effort, and community service linked to the project. Ann is a beekeeper, and she sells honey and beeswax products to support charities. Ann had to prepare a detailed portfolio, including a personal narrative, in order to be considered for the entomology project winner designation. “4-H, I feel, has been very beneficial for

me,” Ann wrote. “It makes me an extrovert instead of an introvert! I wouldn’t have done a lot of things if it wasn’t for 4-H. It has made me realize that I’m not going to let my disability define who I am. I found something that I’m passionate about through 4-H in one of the projects. Due to that passion, I can explore the project that I absolutely love, and be

brave enough to explore other projects in 4-H.” This year, Ann’s entomology project group did a project studying the polyphemus moth, starting with polyphemus eggs and watching the insects as they grew. She contributed to a display that will be on view in the 4-H building at the Fair.

The Sedgwick County Fair Demolition Derby is one of the Fair’s biggest events. This year’s event begins at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 21.

Demolition Derby will end Fair with a crunch By Sam Jack

Times-Sentinel Newspapers sjack@tsnews.com

With a bigger prize pool, the organizers of this year’s Sedgwick County Fair Demolition Derby are anticipating a large number of drivers to compete, destroying their rides and delighting Fairgoers in the stands on Saturday, July 21. “It’ll probably be a record turnout for cars,” said Shane McLaughlin, one of the organizers. “That’s because of the increase in the prize money, and also the fact that

me and Troy (Swonger) have put on derbies around here for 15 or 20 years, and we’ve got a good reputation. A lot of guys respect us, so they’ll come and support our show.” The prize pool totals $10,000, with first-place finishers in the welded and bolt and chain division coming away with $2,500. The bolt and chain division features cars that are pretty much stock, with the addition of some safety features. “In the welded class, you can do quite a bit to your car, and it’s pretty much a tank war,” McLaughlin said. Kids can drive

battery-powered vehicles and bump each other during a power wheels competition. New this year, the organizers will be raffling off a chance to compete in the bolt and chain division. “It’s $10 to buy a ticket, or three chances for $25, and the winner gets to drive a 1978 Caprice. We’ll furnish the helmet and all that stuff. You can walk in with no car and walk out with $2,500 if you’re the winner,” McLaughlin said. The derby will be held at the Grandstand Arena. Gates open at 5 p.m., and the event starts at 7 p.m.

Softball tourney returns to Fair

After a break of several years to try new events, the Sedgwick County Fair’s softball tournament returns for a second consecutive year. Organizers tried new events such as a home run derby or a duck soup format tournament. It seems a break helped rejuvenate interest in the softball tournament, which made a successful return in 2017. The tournament’s entry fee is $250 per team. The winner of each division gets $250 in cash and T-shirts, while the runners-up in each division will get T-shirts. Games will be played all four evenings of the Fair and also on Saturday afternoon. In addition, there will be door prizes. The tournament format will depend on the number of teams. There are two divisions again, a co-ed division and a men’s Softball Tournament wood bat division. Wood bats and balls will be provided for the men’s tournament. Wednesday, July 18 - Saturday, Forms for the tournament are available July 21 on the Sedgwick County Fair Association website, ourcountyfair.com. Lace up for the annual Run to Cheney

The Run to Cheney includes three races, and one of them is just what the title of the event sounds like: an eight-mile run from Garden Plain to Cheney. The other two races are a one-mile and a 5K. The run is a Saturday highlight of the Sedgwick County Fair and will take place on July 21. The course of the eight-mile run will kick off at Garden Plain High School and head south on 295th Street West, down to 23rd Street South. The course then will run west on 23rd to 359th Street West, then turn south on 359th to 31st Street South. From there, the course will run west to 375th Street West (Hoover

Street in Cheney), then turn south again and run to Second Avenue. The race will go west on Second until it gets to Main Street, were it will turn south and end at the Sedgwick County Fairgrounds, the traditional end of the other races in the Run to Cheney. The Run to Cheney began in 1984 with a starting line in the country and a finish in town. “The very first year, that’s what it was: a four-mile race from Lutheran Hill on old Highway 54 to the Citizens State Bank in Cheney,” said race organizer Rich Simmons. The one-mile race will begin at the

intersection of Main Street and Avenue A, run west on Avenue A to Marshall Street. From there, the course will turn north, then turn west on South Avenue over to Adams Street. The course will head north on Adams to Third Avenue, then head east back to Main Street. Once there, the course will turn south before ending just south of the original starting line. The 5K course will begin at the railroad tracks on Main Street, then head south down to MacArthur Road. From there, the course will head west to 391st Street West (Lake Road), then head north to Sixth Avenue, before turning south onto Main Street and concluding

LAC Design offers handmade crafts By Sam Jack

Times-Sentinel Newspapers sjack@tsnews.com

Longtime Fair vendor LAC Design offers a variety of hand-crafted decorative items, including ceramics, paintings, barnwood-framed Americana images, and crosses. “We say barnwood frame, but it’s actually old picket fence that looks good,” said Aaron Crawford, who co-owns the Oklahoma-based business with his parents, Jerry and Linda. “The backing for the prints isn’t just a cardboard slice or piece of it; it’s tin roofing metal, so it’s wavy and has a sort of 3D effect.” LAC recently added Perler Beads, little plastic beads that you arrange on a peg board and then melt with a clothing iron. In addition, LAC sells commissioned art pieces, created by Aaron Crawford’s wife, who makes art under the name Cookie Hart. “She has a few pieces she’s either just

finishing or that have already been setting around, that I’ll ask her to bring,” Crawford said. “Those’ll be canvas, and we also have ceramics she has painted. She can take something that normally looks the same every time and make it look very good, ceramics-wise.” Most of LAC’s decorative items are for indoor use, but some can also be put out in the yard. Picket fence crosses work outdoors. “It’s not just two boards and nail them together; it has depth to it,” Crawford said of LAC’s cross design. “We take trim board and normal paneling board, and we put smaller crosses that are made out or ceramic or plastics in the middle.” LAC’s home base is a store at a mall in Shawnee, Okla., but family members are out selling their goods at craft shows and fairs almost every weekend. “Probably the most uniting theme of what we do is the fact that everything is either hand-crafted in Oklahoma, or hand-crafted by somebody right around here,” Crawford said.

Pedal pull is a favorite for kids and adults

The Sedgwick County Fair’s Pedal Pull is back for a 28th year. Cindy Kill, who took over as event coordinator in 2017, said that this year’s pedal will continue much like it has in years past, with children ages 4 through 11 eligible to compete. The event, divided by age groups, involves a sled hooked to a tractor, with the individual competitors pedaling to move the sled forward. Because it is a sanctioned event, the top three placers within each age division are awarded certificates to compete at the Kansas State Fair’s pedal pull in September. Along with the certificates, various prizes are awarded at the end of the event

to winners of a registration drawing. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, east of the Open Air Stage. Competition will begin at 10 a.m. Children registering must have a parent or guardian with them to participate, and tennis shoes are recommended for the event. There is no registration fee. Each registered child will receive a chance to win one of the drawing prizes, and they also will be given a registration gift, donated by Sedgwick County Electric. “Everybody gets something,” said Kill. “This is a good team-building experience for the co-op too, just to see each other outside of work.”

The Sedgwick County Electric Cooperative’s employees volunteer at the event. The company has been in charge of the event since the pedal pull’s beginnings. Kill is the cooperative’s member services director. “I like watching the kids try hard to pedal the tractor,” said Kill. “It’s always so entertaining to watch the looks on their faces.” Last year, more than 100 children participated in the pedal pull, and Kill said she expects a large number to compete again. The event will start with the 4 year olds and work its way up to the older children. For more information on the pedal

pull, contact Kill at the Sedgwick County Electric Cooperative at 316-542-3131.

Los Toritos serves Mexican food, but that’s not all By Sam Jack

Times-Sentinel Newspapers sjack@tsnews.com

The Los Toritos food truck will be at the Sedgwick County Fair this year, returning after a successful first appearance in 2017. Los Toritos’ mainstay is Mexican food, according to Kristina Pelky, who owns the truck with her business partner, Nick Garcia. But that’s not all they serve. “We do the chicken fingers and little corn dogs, because we know not everybody likes tamales. Kids’ taste buds are not always as advanced. I have a 9-year-old daughter who helps us out sometimes, and I know she’s a lot more picky than I am.” Those who are up for some Mexican food can look forward to a variety of homemade goodies: tamales, nachos, barbecue nachos, brats, and a homemade chili and pork dish served with rice. “A tamale is basically meat and chili, wrapped in a corn masa, then wrapped in a corn husk, and steamed,” Pelky explained. “We make the chili ourselves, and the tamales. The tamales, we usually prepare toward the end of the winter, because it’s a long, involved process. We make them on our downtime before the next season. We steam them and sell them, and they’re really good.” Garcia and Pelky started Los Toritos in 2012. “We used to work together, and both of us were tired of working for someone else, so we just decided to do this,” Pelky said. Los Toritos is based in Ogden, and mostly appears at events around Kansas, but the food truck has been seen as far afield as Nebraska City. 4-H cook adapts to special diet By Sam Jack

Times-Sentinel Newspapers sjack@tsnews.com

West Wichita 4-Her Brigitte Coss, 8, is a small girl suffering from an illness with a big name: eosinophilic esophagitis. “It’s this really nasty annoyance that causes all sorts of allergies, and you’re not allowed to have dairy, ever,” said Brigitte’s mother, Cindy. “When kids with this condition drink dairy, it gets caught like mucus, and therefore it can aggravate the condition and cause the throat to close up.” You don’t realize just how many food products contain dairy until you try to totally cut it out of your diet, according to Cindy. Creating dairy-free foods that are also tasty has been challenging, but participating in the Sunflower 4-H Club’s cooking project has also made it kind of fun. “4-H is helping us a lot, absolutely,” Cindy said. “It gives us an extra reason to deal with our food issues and adjust our diets, because as we do, we can use the adjustments as projects, or we can use projects as a way to make the adjustments. Brigitte is more into it than she would be otherwise. She really wants to see what she can do.” Brigitte enjoys cooking all the more now that she has a beautiful peacock apron. She is planning to bring jams and jellies to the Fair, as well as cookies made with different types of milk substitute. “It’ll be up to her if she wants to share things that don’t taste so good, because they do represent alternatives, and you never know; people like different things. So some people may like cookies made with plant protein milk,” Cindy said. “Plant protein milk tastes like...plant. But Brigitte likes it, so that’s good.” Children with Brigitte’s condition often struggle to keep their weight up, because of the limitations on what foods they can eat. That means that Brigitte needs to eat foods that are calorie-dense, Cindy said. Other family members also have dietary restrictions that can sometimes be in conflict with one another. “We do something that I’ve heard many families say they never do: We don’t all eat the same things,” Cindy said. “We cannot possibly all eat the same dinner.” Brigitte’s younger brother, Brian Coss II, is a tagalong 4-Her this year.

Toys are the thing for John Brown By Travis Mounts

For more than a decade, John Brown and his toys have been a fixture at the Sedgwick County Fair. If you don’t recognize Brown, you will recognize his booth at the fair. Located at the corner where the food court turns from south to east – right in between in fairgrounds ballfield and the open air arena – he sells sunglasses and a wide variety of other toys. Sunglasses are his top item at the Fair, but his kids toys include umbrellas, fans, magic ink, light-up swords and wands, and other novelties. Something called return balls are popular this year. You wear it on your wrist and throw out a ball on a a bungee string, and it comes back to you. Brown said it is supposed to improve hand-eye coordination and help you practice catching. The Sedgwick County Fair is one of only three festivals that Brown goes to each year, but he does other events all year long. “I’m busy every weekend,” he said. Motorcycle rallies are on his schedule, and he is getting ready for a show at Tinker Air Force Base in the Oklahoma City area that takes place before the Fair. At age 72, Brown is slowing down his pace a little, but he likes staying busy – especially when a show is outside. “I like to stay outside. It keeps me young, I gues,” he said with a laugh. In addition to Tinker AFB, he does shows at McConnell Air Force Base, Fort Riley and Leavenworth. Brown, who lives in Wichita, said those shows focus more on sports memorabilia and can last 1-2 weeks. NFL merchandise proves popular there. The hardest part of any show is setting up and tearing down, he said. Brown guessed he’s been coming to Cheney for 13-15 years. He wasn’t exactly sure when he first came here. It’s been around 15 years that he has became self-employed, selling merchandise at fairs, festivals and shows. “I started with a friend of mine selling baseball cards at baseball shows in malls,” he said. The first show he did on his own was a tractor show in Winfield. He likes the Sedgwick County Fair, and has relatives in the area. “It’s a good fair, a good show. It’s fun,” he said. “I have people who I sold to as kids that now are coming with their kids.

Petting zoo brings smiles and joy to the Fair Kristin Meyer and her family have brought a petting zoo to the Sedgwick County Fair for nearly 25 years. Although she has witnessed several changes in the past couple of decades, one aspect of the petting zoo remains the same: Her favorite part of the experience is the smiles and joy it brings to children and other generations in the same family. “Kids are excited,” Meyer said, “and parents are excited to see their kids excited about the animals.” Meyer and her husband, Ivan, are mainstays at the Fair. Over the years, they have brought to the Fair many animals, including miniature horses, miniature donkeys, lambs, baby goats, ducks, chickens, rabbits and a calf. Proceeds from the petting zoo’s ap-

Street dance will cap Sedgwick County Fair After all the competitions and events are over, Fair organizers will give teens (and adults, too) a chance to cut loose. The annual street dance will be held at the Open Air Arena on Saturday, July 21, from 10:30 p.m. to midnight. The event is popular with local Cheney youths, and 4-H exhibitors from around the county often attend, too. And, of course, everybody is invited. “It’s a longstanding Fair tradition,” said Marti Johnson, a Fair volunteer. “It’s kind of a last hurrah, to buy your last Pronto Pup and circulate amongst your friends.” A DJ will be on hand to spin tunes. The street dance is free and open to the public.

Members of the Goddard 4-H Club march in the Fall Festival parade last October.

Goddard club considers itself ‘4-H family’ By Sam Jack

Times-Sentinel Newspapers sjack@tsnews.com

Enjoy the Sedgwick County Fair! Good luck to all participants!

The Goddard 4-H Club is one of the smaller clubs in Sedgwick County – but that small size provides several advantages, according to both adult volunteers and youth participants. “The kids have the opportunity to get to know everybody, to run for office. It just feels almost more like a family than just a club,” said Beth Oborny, the club’s assistant community leader. Bearing in mind that the club has less than two dozen members, the list of activities and projects the group pursues is somewhat dizzying. On Saturday, Oct. 7, club members created a float for the Goddard Fall Festival parade, marched in the parade and handed out pamphlets promoting 4-H. The next day, new officers were inducted, in a candlelit ceremony. Other recent activities include creating and delivering 99 May baskets to residents of Dove Estates and Medicalodge in Goddard, and writing, memorizing and performing an original skit for 4-H Days. The skit described the history of 4-H – which is also, by and large, the history of the Goddard 4-H Club, since the club was founded way back in 1929. “It came about in the 1800s, and devel-

oped because county extension service agents reaching out to farmers found it was more effective to get those recommendations through the kids,” Oborny said. “It became 4-H, officially, in 1914.” Goddard club members are active in many projects, including woodworking, dog training, arts and crafts, and rabbits. Kids take a leading role in planning project meetings, community service projects and other events. “That’s one of the best things about 4-H: The kids run the meetings,” Oborny said. “They’re really learning a lot of good business practices that they’ll need later on as adults.” Club member Josie Croninger and her mom, Sheila, both said they were glad to have joined the club three years ago. Josie now raises and shows pet rabbits, a hobby she would probably never have picked up if it weren’t for 4-H. “Rabbits is one of my favorite projects,” Josie said. “I never thought that I would actually own a rabbit. I have a new rabbit I got recently named Wallie; he’s really pretty.” When Josie performed a piano solo at 4-H Days this year, just about her entire club joined the audience to support her. That actually made her a bit nervous, but she still appreciated the support. “I’m going to do better next year, probably,” Josie said.

Teen Council keeps older kids involved in 4-H By Sam Jack

Times-Sentinel Newspapers sjack@tsnews.com

When Sedgwick County 4-Hers turn 13, they are eligible to participate in the Teen Council. The Teen Council is a program that aims to keep older kids engaged with 4-H, and it offers a range of opportunities. “Our goal is really to give the kids some more leadership opportunities, as well as a chance to get to know kids from across the county,” said Janet Donaghue, a County Extension employee and the Teen Council’s adult sponsor. “The kids run the meetings, and they come up with the ideas.” Teen Council members put together several county-wide events each year, including the style review, banquet, and etiquette dinner, selecting themes, creating decorations and working with Donaghue to book speakers and make other arrangements. The etiquette dinner, a Sedgwick Coun-

ty 4-H tradition since at least the 1970s, gives 4-Hers a taste of high society. “We bring in a speaker who talks through the whole meal about how to fold your napkins, how to hold your forks,” Donaghue said. “We talk about how to make conversation at the dinner table. At the end of that portion, the kids also write thank-you cards to the hotel, the speaker and the chaperones, so they get some practice with that, too.” After dinner, the level of formality drops, as the Teen Council hosts a dance party, usually featuring lots of line dancing. Katie Bennett, a member of Country Kids 4-H Club, said she enjoys Teen Council. “At least (in) our club, it’s a lot of younger kids, so it’s fun to have an older age group that you can do stuff with. We have our meetings with our club, but we also have Teen Council meetings,” she said. Bennett and fellow Country Kids member Avery Schill helped out at the 4-H Carnival over the weekend, as the Teen

Council ran the concession stand. “It went really well. I made cookies for the stand, and other people brought chili, hot dogs and stuff. All the money raised was for Teen Council,” Bennett said. Schill noted that the Teen Council participates in other fundraisers that benefit 4-H as a whole. “The last couple years we’ve done nut sales, and this year, we’re going to do a mattress fundraiser, where part of the money you spend on a mattress goes back to the clubs,” Schill said. Bennett and Schill both said they plan to stay involved with Teen Council throughout their high school years. “It’s neat to know other people that are my age from different school systems. They like the things that I like,” Schill said. The Teen Council usually meets on the fourth Monday of the month, at the Sedgwick County Extension Center. For more information on Teen Council, call Donaghue at 316-660-0128.

Much more than coffee

Kandy’s Koffee brings tasty drinks to the Fair By Travis Mounts

Times-Sentinel Newspapers news@tsnews.com

For about a decade, coffee has been a major part of Kandy Hoyle’s life – but only for a couple of weeks or so each year. Hoyle began working at a coffee booth at the Kansas State Fair about a decade ago. I was asked to help some friends,” said Hoyle, a Goddard resident. A few years ago, she bought out the previous owners when they retired. She only worked in the beverage business during the state fair. “During the state fiar, I move to Hutchinson for three weeks because I build a free-standing booth under the grandstand,” she said. But in the past year, she’s decided to do more. “I enjoy it so much, I decided to take the business a step further,” she said. Now Hoyle has a free-standing trailer, and she’s been to a number of multi-day

events in Kansas and Oklahoma. There are always folks who want their coffee no matter what the weather is, but a hot drink may not be what many folks want on a hot day in mid-July at the Sedgwick County Fair. “I have a broad range of things,” Hoyle said. Her menu includes pure cane sugar fruit smoothies. “And they are amazing,” she bragged. She was iced lattes, her hot recipe for both hot and cold chai tea, and freshbrewed and flavored teas. “Everything I do is small-batch brewed,” she said. Hoyle said that if a customer wants something not on her menu, all they need to do is ask. “I want to make sure my customers are happy. If customers want something and I have the ingredients, I will make it,” she said. “I’m a full beverage service. When people come to my booth, I ask them if they want something delicious to drink. And generally they walk away with a smile on their face.”

Pride of Texas to highlight new ride

Advance purchases return for carnival wrist bands By Travis Mounts

Times-Sentinel Newspapers news@tsnews.com

If it’s July, that means it’s time for the Sedgwick County Fair. And if it’s the Sedgwick County Fair, that means a visit from Pride of Texas Carnivals. Carnival fans will have a new ride to look forward to. Chris Barton of Pride of Texas said “The Riptide” is a new addition of the carnival lineup. “I haven’t even received it yet. We’ll have it a few weeks before the Fair in Cheney,” he said. The Riptide is a 22-person, bench style ride that goes in a circle 65-feet up in the air. “It feels like weightlessness when it comes down,” he said. Made by ARM Rides in Ohio, the ride also is known as the Rock Star or Flying Dutchman. Once again, discount wrist bands will be available for advance purchase. Discount prices are just $20 per wrist band; the regular price during the Fair is $25. The sales process will be easier this year. Advance wrist band sales will be handled through the Sedgwick County Fair website at www. ourcountyfair.com. Wrist bands are on sale now, and sales will continue through Tuesday, July 17, the day before the Fair begins.

ABOVE: Riptide is a new ride that Pride of Texas Carnivals will bring to the Sedgwick County Fair. LEFT: Come enjoy the rides at this year’s Fair. Discounted wristbands for the carnival can be purchased online at www. ourcountyfair. com.

Good Luck to all 4-Hers!

For people who make their purchaes online, they will need to go to pick up vouchers at the Sedgwick County Fair office on the northwest corner of the fairgrounds. The office will open at 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, and be open all four days of the Fair. Once you have picked up your vouchers, you can take them to the Pride of Texas Carnival ticket booth and get your wristband. You can use your advance purchase wristbands any day during the Fair; there no longer is a “bracelet night” at the Fair. In-person advance ticket purchases can be completed at Cheney City Hall, located at 131 N. Main Street in Cheney. Those purchases are cash only. Cheney City Hall is open 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. Of course, you can still purchase wrist bands during the Fair. They will be available for $25 at the carnival ticket booth, on the east side of the Fairgrounds.

FFA to have booth at Fair By Sam Jack

Times-Sentinel Newspapers sjack@tsnews.com

For the first time, the Future Farmers of America will have a booth at the Sedgwick County Fair in 2018. The booth will be located in the Farm Bureau Building, and will replace the usual Sedgwick County Farm Bureau booth. The Sedgwick County Farm Bureau will still be involved at the Fair, sponsoring the 4-H breakfast on Thursday morning and participating in the parade. FFA has grown considerably in Sedgwick County of late. Maize High School and Wichita Southeast High School each have chapters, and Renwick and Cheney chapters got started during the 2017-2018 school year. The FFA booth will be manned by club members from all four of the county’s chapters, all eager to share information with the public. “Everybody needs to be educated about where their food comes from, and so this is a great opportunity for all of us to show what agriculture really means in everybody’s lives,” said Stacy DeVore, sponsor of Cheney’s FFA chapter.

Family competes in county fair By Sam Jack

Four young members of the Greene family – Brenna, Ruby, Milena and Blaise – entered crafts, flowers, plants and baked goods in the 2017 Sedgwick County Fair. The four siblings are students at Haysville’s Rex Elementary. Mom Emily Holub said it was the first year for her family to participate. “I grew up in Cheney, so when I was growing up, my family went to the Fair every year, and always entered stuff,” she said. “I just wanted to pass that on to my kids.” Holub said that her kids had a blast figuring out what to do, preparing exhibits, bringing them to the Fair and claiming their ribbons. Brenna, 9, and Blaise, 5, each entered bunches of wildflowers. They picked the wildflowers south of Haysville, then arranged them in glass vases. Milena, 6, got a blue ribbon on an arrangement of marigolds from the family’s garden.

The family kitchen was busy in the days leading up to the Fair, with entries including homemade brownies by Ruby, age 8. All four kids entered Lego creations in the arts and crafts category, along with pictures they drew on their own or at school. “This was a new thing this year for us,” Holub said. “They had a blast.”
