Owls sweep 2A State track titles
Garden Plain girls defend 2019 championship By Travis Mounts TSnews news@tsnews.com The Garden Plain girls and boys track and field teams put on an impressive display at the Class 2A State track and field meet on Saturday, sweeping their way to both team championships. The girls’ performance was absolutely dominating. The Owls scored 108 points on their way to the victory, and in the process defended the title they won in 2019. There were no spring sports in Kansas in 2020, due to the pandemic. Garden Plain head girls coach Eric Rockers was surprised at the Owls’ margin of victory – 60 points. “I knew we had a shot to bring home a trophy. The girls performed really, really well,” he said. “I was a little bit shocked.” The boys team won convincingly, too, scoring 73 points to beat runner-up Kansas Christian by 29 points.
Head boys coach Andrew Bergkamp was pleased with the win, and a bit surprised by how many points the Owls won by. “I though it was going to be a tight competition. The team just over-performed,” he said. The Lady Owls won their team title by dominating multiple events. Brooke Hammond and Haidyn Thompson ran side-by-side in the finals of both the 100 and 200 meters, and finished first and second, respectively, in both events. Hammond set the standard for the Owls, with four gold medals on the day. She also won the 400 meters, setting the top time while competing in the slower heat. And she anchored the 4x100 relay team that won gold. Thompson and Allison Catlin both were on that team. Catlin won three gold medals. She was the winner in both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles. Teammate Celia Puetz made it to the medal stand in both races as well, placing fourth in the 100 hurdles and sixth in the 300 hurdles. Catlin anchored the 4x400 relay, running with Alli Puetz, Celia Puetz and Sydney Puetz. The Owls placed fourth. Sydney Puetz also earned an individual medal, taking fifth in the 1600. The girls set new school records in three events – Catlin in the 300 hurdles, Hammond in the 200, and the 4x100 relay team. Arden Rex paced the boys by winning three gold medals, one on the track, one jumping and one throwing. He won the 200, high jump and javelin. In addition, Rex was second in the 400. Jack Haukap earned two individual medals, including a first in shot put. He also was seventh in high jump. Luke Hillman took second in shot put, finishing right behind Haukap. Hillman came in as the 13th seed, and at State threw nearly 5 feet farther than he did at the regional meet, blowing past his previous personal best. Will Tice gave the Owls another 1-2 finish, this time in javelin as Rex and Tice took the top two spots. Tice beat his previous best distance by about 12 feet. Tyler Dreiling made it to the medal stand by placing seventh in discus.

Cardinals win State softball By Michael Buhler TSnews
The glow of the Cheney Cardinals winning the Class 3A State softball championship still hasn’t worn off for head coach Matthew Johnson. “I’m still on cloud nine,” Johnson said Tuesday morning. “It was a great ride and it’s a tremendous feeling. I’ve coached a lot of sports and a lot of games and this has been probably the most rewarding championship that I’ve been involved with for sure.” The Cardinals won the State title last Friday evening in thrilling fashion, downing Silver Lake 1-0 in Manhattan. Korri Lies tossed a seven-hit shutout and struck out seven while freshman Jailyn Adolph hit a home run – her first all season – to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning for the game’s only run. “Jailyn’s eyes and smile were as big as could be coming around second base,” Johnson said. “It was just like she couldn’t
even believe it herself.” With Cheney up 1-0 in the top of the seventh, Silver Lake’s Reagan Money slid into third and had a chance to score the tying run when the throw sailed past third baseman Kylee Scheer. However, Scheer chased down the ball and threw it to catcher Lexi Lorenz, who tagged Money out at the plate to end the game. “After that final out it was crazy,” Lorenz said. “Everyone was screaming and running and jumping. I held that ball in my glove for a good amount of time just taking pictures without taking it off. After we won, the first person I ran to was Korri. “Korri and I have played together on the same team since I can remember. I have caught for her for a good amount of years and I wouldn’t want to catch for anyone else.” Lies dominated in the circle all season and continued to do so at State, striking out 31 batters over three games and allowing just seven runs – and only two combined in the semifinals and champi-

onship game. “She’s been a workhorse all year,” Johnson said. “This is her sport, it’s her passion and it’s the thing she loves to do. She’s been phenomenal all year.” For the year, Lies tossed three no-hitters and several more shutouts. Not only that, but she also performed well at the plate at State, getting the game-winning hit in the Cardinals’ come-from-behind win against Rock Creek in the quarterfinal last Thursday.
“She did it all for us,” Johnson said. “She just had a really, really phenomenal tournament. I’m not sure if Class 3A has a player of the year, but...I certainly would say that she would be worthy of that honor.” Lorenz also had more words of praise for Lies. “She is the most hard-working girl I’ve ever met,” Lorenz said. “She puts

Andale-GP finishes second at State
By Michael Buhler TSnews
After making it all the way to the Class 4A State championship game, the Andale-Garden Plain softball team could not overcome a quick start by Wamego. The Red Raiders scored six runs in the top of the
first inning and never trailed as they took a 6-2 win over Andale-GP last Saturday in Salina. “When a game like that ends, it’s disappointing to come up one win short of our ultimate goal of winning a State championship,” Andale-GP coach Chuck Schrader said. “After having some time

to reflect on the season and really what all of us have dealt with the last 15 months, it was a good season and we improved steadily from the start to the end of the year.” Kylie Horsch had two hits to pace the Andale-GP offense against Wamego, while Hannah Decker tossed 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out seven.
Andale-GP (21-4) pulled off a pair of comebacks to make it to the finals, including a 3-2, eight-inning win over top-seeded Holton in the semifinals earlier last Saturday. With the score tied 2-2 heading into the eighth inning, Kyla Eck tripled to lead off the inning and later scored on Horsch’s grounder to second. Alyssa Mude then retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning
to preserve the win. Mude earned the win in the circle, striking out 10 and walking three while allowing six hits and one earned run in eight innings of work. Last Friday, Andale-GP shook off an early one-run deficit to take a 7-2 win over Eudora. Andale-GP scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead, then added five more runs in the bottom of the sixth to break the
game open. Eck drove in four runs and had a pair of hits, while Madelyn Rolfs drove in two runs for Andale-GP. Mude struck out 13 in the circle as she went the distance for the win. “We actually had three straight comebacks wins to make it to the finals, starting with erasing a 9-4 deficit to Circle in the regional championship,” Schrader said, “then coming back against Eudora and Holton in the State tournament. For the season, we trailed at some point in nine games that we went on to win. Twice we were down by five runs in a game and came back to win. We never gave up and that attitude helped to get 21 wins this season.” Championship Wamego 600 000 0 – 6 6 2 Andale-GP 001 001 0 – 2 6 3 L – Mude. Siblings Zach and Hayley Trotter brought home gold medals for the Clearwater track and field team during the Class 4A State meet, held at Wichita State University last Friday. Zach and Hayley – a senior and a sophomore – took first in the same event, the 800 meters. Zach was the only boy to break two minutes, finishing in 1:57.27. Hayley’s time was more than eight seconds faster than what she ran at regionals. It was a good meet for Tanner Cash, too, who found his way to the medal stand twice. He was third in javelin, an event that saw teammate Trent Hastings place sixth. Cash improved his distance from regionals by 8-8. He also placed eighth in the 200 meters. The Indians qualified all three boys relays for State, and two of them placed. Tate Martin, Cash, Mason Seiter and Trotter took fourth in the 4x400. The
4x100 teams of Lane Pierce, Martin, Dayton Kile and Cash finished eighth. On the girls’ side, Hayley Trotter brought home two medals. In addition to winning the 800, she placed third in the 1600. The 4x400 relay placed third, with Laurel Streit, Carlee Lill, Briona Woods and Hayley Trotter. As a team, the Clearwater boys placed eighth out of 32 teams scoring, with 29 points. Smith, Block both win pair of State medals By Travis Mounts TSnews news@tsnews.com
Eisenhower track athletes Coby Smith and Makenzie Block each won a pair of medals at the Class 5A State track and field meet, leading Eisenhower at Wichita State last Thursday. Smith placed fourth in both the 110-meter hurdles and in the pole vault. Block was one of three girls to earn individual medals for the Tigers. She placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles and was sixth in the 100-meter hurdles. Also on the track, Jadyn Pavlik finished seventh in the 3200 meters. Teammate Payton Ryan placed seventh in high jump. The Tigers had two medal-winning relay teams, one boys’ relay and one girls’ relay. In the boys 4x800, Dawson Williams, Logan Libel, Jacob Fawson and Preston Hawkins placed eighth. And in the girls 4x400, Abigail Bachman, Abigail Farr, Payton Ryan and McKenzie Henry finished eighth. Jacie Carlson just missed the medal stand in girls pole vault. She was one of three athletes tied at 9-6. Malachi wins gold in triple jump By Travis Mounts TSnews news@tsnews.com The Goddard Lions’ track and field team did not send a large contingent to last week’s Class 5A State meet, but all five Lions who went found their way to the medal stand at least once. Leading the way was Malachi Mullens, who won the triple jump. He landed his best jump of the day on his first attempt in the finals, a jump of 46-7.5, which was 3/4-inch better than Cortland Hervey of Bonner Springs. Mullens also anchored the boys 4x100-meter relay, running with Zane Pepperd, Micah Childers-Johnson and Fenton Brozek. The Lions were eighth overall. Goddard’s lone girl was Madelyn Hernandez. A senior, she tied for seventh place in high jump with Eisenhower’s Payton Ryan. They jumped 5-0, as did two other athletes, but Hernandez and Ryan finished ahead of them by clearing 5-0 on their first attempts. Indians take fourth at State track

The Clearwater Indians baseball team was tantalizingly close to winning all three of its games at the Class 4A State tournament in Salina last week. The Indians won their quarterfinal game against Ark Valley Chisholm Trail league Division IV rival Mulvane last Thursday 3-2 in eight innings. However, the Indians lost their semifinal game against Clay Center/Wakefield last Friday by that same score, then fell to Paola in the third-place game 3-2 later that day. Despite the loss, Clearwater coach Jess Tracy is pleased with how his team did at State. “It feels good,” Tracy said. “I’m very proud of our guys in the way they played and represented our program and school.” The Indians (15-10) fell victim to a walkoff single in the thirdplace game against

Brock Toothaker had a pair of hits for the Indians, while Jake Wellington drove in both Clearwater runs. Austin Carlson went the distance on the hill in the loss. “Last Friday’s games were tough losses,” Tracy said. “We had our chances in both games but just couldn’t get that big hit when we needed it.” Clearwater got behind
Clay Center/Wakefield 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning, but scored twice in the top of the third to make it a one-run game. However, neither team scored again. Carlson and Wellington each drove in a run, while Toothaker, Wellington, Jackson Bishop and Tyler Fugarino had the Indians’ hits. Toothaker was the hero in Clearwater’s quarterfinal win against Mulvane, as he doubled home the go-ahead – and eventual winning run – in the top of the eighth inning. Denning wins State title in hurdles
By Travis Mounts TSnews news@tsnews.com
Garrett Denning, a junior on the Campus boys track and field team, won gold at last Thursday’s Class 6A State track and field meet, which took place at Cessna Stadium. Denning won the 300-meter huredles with a time of 40.26, finishing at the top of a group of four hurdlers who finished within a second of each other. Also in that group was teammate Andrew Howard, another junior, who placed fourth. The duo also competed in the 110-meter hurdles, although only Denning advanced

squads have won State in the same season. The girls won the 2A title in 2019, 2006, 2003, 1998 and 1996, and won 3A in 2013 and 2004. They now have eight State track and field championships. This year is the fourth time the boys have won State track. They won the 3A crown in 2009 and 2010, and were 2A champions in 1980. The girls’ 108 points was the second-highest total among 12 girls and boys champions this season.
The Andale girls scored 137.5 points while winning the 4A title (their boys were second). Scoring 100 or more points to win a title does not happen every year. In fact, scoring in the 60s or 70s is usually enough. Even scoring in the 50s can be enough to win a championship. Since the 2011 season, there have been 120 girls and boys championships awarded. In that time and counting this season, only
six teams have won State titles while scoring more than 100 points. In 2012, the Bishop Carroll boys scored 104 and finished second in Class 5A, behind champion Hays with 118. That is by far the highest number of points scored by the top two teams since 2011. The lowest-scoring champions were in 2011. Lies struck out 13 as she went the distance for the win. The State softball title represents the second State title that Cheney High School has won in girls sports over the last three months. The Cardinals won the State title in girls basketball in March – and several players from that team also played softball. “After winning State in basketball, the five girls that play softball and basketball were joking about us winning State softball

Cheney shot 329 the first day, leading Santa Fe Trail by 2 strokes and Trinity Academy by 5 strokes. Cheney shot even better on Day 2, lowering their 18-hole score to 324, but it was not enough as Santa Fe Trail shot lights out on the second day, shooting 308 to lower their score by 23 points. That was enough to give Santa Fe a 639, coming in 14 strokes lower than Cheney’s 653. Trinity held on to third place, with a two-day score of 668. Cheney head coach Tim Hiebert said Santa Fe had an off day the first day of play, and was closer to normal on Day 2. That said, he was pleased with the Cardinals’ play at State and their steady improvement all season. “I was really proud of what this team accomplished. The
team improved steadily through the season. We could have played better if we had two more weeks,” he siad. Twelve teams qualified for State, and six made the cut to golf on Day 2. Harrison Middleton shot 151 to place third overall. He shot 72 on the second day, lowering his score by 5 strokes. “Harrison Middleton was our MVP this year. I’ve never had a golfer work as hard. Keegan (O’Shea) is the same way,” Hiebert said. Aiden Lynch shot 163, finishing in a four-way tie for 14th. The freshman played his best golf of the year at State. Keegan O’Shea turned in a score of 167, tying three others for 24th place. Owen Ast rounded out the scoring in a three-way tie for 31st, shooting 172. The Cardinals should be in position to make another run next year. All four top golfers will return. Out of the six golfers who made State, only Ethan Cokely will graduate. The rest of the team is juniors, with the exception of Lynch. Even though Cokely wasn’t

seventh in high jump. She cleared 5-0, tying two other jumpers at that height. Wenke placed between the other two, based on attempts at that height. Wenke cleared 5-0 on her second attempt.
Grace Bender qualified for State as a freshman. She placed 12th in pole vault, clearing 8-0. Had she cleared the next height, 8-6, she would have been in contention for a medal.

Tigers beat Lions to take third at State
By Michael Buhler TSnews
What could be more fitting than Eisenhower and Goddard squaring off for third place at the Class 5A State softball tournament last Friday? How about an exciting finish? With the score tied at 3-all at Wilkins Stadium in Wichita, Eisenhower’s Karlee Ford stole home in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Tigers a 4-3 win over the Lions and give Eisenhower the thirdplace trophy at State. “It is a great accomplishment to place at State,” Eisenhower coach Amber Brunswig said. “I am super proud of this team to finish the season with a win. Wichita State was a great atmosphere for the State tournament. Playing Goddard for a third time, both teams were familiar with each other and it would be a good game.” Meanwhile, Goddard coach Rita Smith was proud of her team for finishing fourth at State. “It is an honor first of all to get to the State tournament, especially how we did it in 10 innings against the higher seed Andover in the regional finals,” Smith said. “To finish in the top four of an extremely tough Class 5A, not to mention sharing a league title with Andover and Eisenhower, is a major accomplishment – especially when we started the season there were quite a few unknowns with a very young team.” Last Friday’s third-place game also featued a strong pitching duel between Eisenhower’s Allyson Montgomery and the Lions’ Kendal LeGrand. Montgomery got the win as she struck out 11 and

allowed just one walk and five hits in seven innings, while LeGrand took the loss despite striking out 10 in six innings of work. LeGrand and Khloe Perkins both homered for Goddard as LeGrand finished the day with two RBIs. Ford and Audry Rumsey each had two hits for the Tigers, while Carsyn McCue had a triple and drove in two runs for Eisenhower. Both teams suffered close losses in the semifinals earlier in the day last Friday. Eisenhower lost to eventual State champ Bishop Carroll 3-1, while Goddard lost 1-0 to Basehor-Linwood. Kiley Brewster hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to drive in all three Bishop Carroll runs, while Alexis Mastin hit a groundball to drive in Rumsey in the top of the sixth inning. Montgomery pitched well in the loss, shutting out the Eagles after the first inning and allowing just four hits on the day
while striking out six and walking three. In the other semifinal, Basehor-Linwood scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the first inning on an error. LeGrand took the tough-luck loss, allowing just four hits, one walk and no earned runs in six innings while striking out 11. Natalie Klenda-Lopez, Bailey Kimball and Allyson Hamblin had the Lions’ hits. “We were so close to being in the championship game,” Smith said. “We needed that one big hit and had chances in three innings with runners in scoring position. It was a very hard-fought game in an incredible atmosphere.” Both teams rode strong pitching to quartefinal wins last Thursday, as Eisenhower downed Shawnee Heights 3-1 and Goddard beat Spring Hill by the same score. Montgomery also dominated in the quarterfinal against three-time defending champion Shawnee
Heights last Thursday, holding the Thunderbirds to just four hits and one
run while striking out 11 and walking three to earn the win. McCue and Grace Sykora each drove in runs in the bottom of the second inning to get the Tigers a 2-0 lead, then Sykora drove in an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth to set the final score. “It was a great win, considering they have won State every year since 2017,” Brunswig said. “We were patient at the plate and executed with runners on base. Allyson pitched a great game.” LeGrand tossed a gem against Spring Hill, allowing just one hit – a second-inning homer to Vanessa Murray – and one walk while striking out 11. Laci Dryden had a pair of hits and also had Goddard’s only RBI on the day.
“Kendal stepped up huge, striking out 11 and only allowed one hit,” Smith said. “It was nice to get an insurance run in the top of the seventh to go up 3-1.” Third place Goddard 012 000 0 – 3 5 1 Eisenhower 021 001 x – 4 6 1 W – Montgomery.
