Welcome from the Board of Directors
The Board of Directors of the Sumner County Fair Association takes pleasure in presenting herewith the Premium List, Rules, and Regulations governing the 2019 annual free fair to be held in Caldwell, Kansas, August 1-4. We wish to take this opportunity to welcome everyone to participate as exhibitors. Every effort is being made by the Board to make this a successful Fair with a large number of quality exhibits, plenty of entertainment, and a place for you to meet your friends. This year, a change in premiums will be instituted. All exhibits – with the exception of livestock, quilts, booths and banners, and wheat show – will be awarded $3 for first placing, $2 for second placing, and $1 for third placing. One check will be issued to an exhibitor for all premiums earned at the Fair and will be available for pickup at 12 noon Sunday. Thus, exhibits are accepted only with the definite understanding that if, for any reason whatever, sufficient funds are not available to pay premiums and awards in full as listed, the Sumner County Fair Association Board of Directors reserves the right to prorate premiums on a percentage basis. Even though this has not occurred in the past, the Board wishes to reserve this right. Your support by bringing exhibits and attending will be more than appreciated. The Board depends on this for a successful Fair. BOARD OF DIRECTORS SUMNER COUNTY FAIR ASSOCIATION CALDWELL, KANSAS

A Place at the Table Fundraising Contest | Wand Whaley (620-845-0253) Chairman The Sumner County Fair Association Board has chosen the theme of “A Place at the Table” as the service/fund raising project at the 92nd Sumner County Fair to be held August 2-4, 2019, in Caldwell. This event will honor Survivors and Victims of Cancer. Any individual or group can rent a $10 space and set up a place setting or exhibit honoring a person that has suffered with cancer; the exhibit can include pictures, hobbies, or anything that portrays who your person is/was and what you want us to know about them. Money will be raised by space rental and also by donations that will result in the donator’s name being displayed throughout the fair. All money raised will be donated to Victory in the Valley in Wichita. Victory in the Valley’s mission is to encourage cancer patients and families on their journey by offering HOPE through emotional and spiritual support, while providing practical service to improve the quality of their lives. This is a beneficial service that has served many in our county who have spent time going through cancer treatment. The $10 rental fee/donation entitles you to a 24x30 inch space to honor your person. You may rent more than one space for the same person or you may enter multiple place settings representing more people. A basic table covering will be provided but feel free to cover it with place mats or other covering of your choice. Use your imagination to capture your special person’s interests and personality. Pre-registration is REQUIRED, and the deadline is July 25. Please register and ask questions by emailing aplaceatthetable19@yahoo.com or by calling 620-845-0253. The fee will be due when you set-up either on Thursday, August 1 from 6-8 pm or Friday, August 2 from 9am to noon. Every attempt to keep displays safe and secure will be exercised, but the Sumner County Fair Association is not responsible for accidents or theft. SPONSORED BY SUMNER COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
PREMIUM CHECK INFORMATION
The following changes in premium checks for placings on entries have been made. When entering items in the Sumner County Fair this year be sure that you as an exhibitor use the same name in all departments in which you enter. For example, do not enter as Suzie Smith in one department and Sue Smith in another. Please include your address when you enter. Each exhibitor will receive only one premium check. It will be a check and not a voucher so exhibitors should be able to cash it anywhere a check can be cashed. Premiums of $3 for 1st, $2 for 2nd, and $1 for third will be awarded in both the adult and junior divisions of the Agriculture/Horticulture, Art, Craft, Domestic Arts (except quilts), Domestic Science, Flowers, Hobby, Junior Home Ec., Junior Miscellaneous, and Photography. Check the Livestock, Quilts, Wheat Show departments for their premium list. Some special contests will be included in premium checks, and some will be paid in cash. Premium checks will be available for pickup in the community (rock) building beginning at 12 noon Sunday. Checks that are not picked up by 1:00 p.m. will be mailed.
Premium checks must be cashed within 90 days of issue.

Grand marshals: Dr. Richard and Chris Heersche
Richard and Chris were both farm kids growing up in Kansas and were members of 4-H, and Rich was an FFA member in high school. They attended Kansas State University, where they met and were married. After graduating from veterinary school, Richard opened a veterinary practice in Wellington, where they have lived and worked for 45 years. They have a daughter and son, Jennifer and Jeff, who were both active in Sumner County 4-H and Fair events in their youth. Jennifer has two children, Lane and Maddie, and Jeff and his wife Joni have two children, Jake and Greylen. They all live in
Wellington. Richard and Chris have been supporters of the Fair for many years. Richard has volunteered his time through testing and inspections to help 4-H and FFA members make sure that their livestock projects qualify for the Fair. They have also sponsored awards and trophies for the livestock shows and have been supporters of the Sumner County Junior Livestock Auction. The Heersches have enjoyed the Sumner County Fair since moving to the area, and they believe it is a very important part of life in Sumner County.
Dr. Richard and Chris Heersche are the 2019 Sumner County Fair Grand Marshals.

Duo brings home grand champion quilt awards By Michelle Leidy-Franklin Star-Argosy Grandmother and granddaughter duo Glennis Zimmerman and Grace Theurer took grand champion awards for their quilts – Zimmerman in the senior division and Theurer in the junior division – during the Sumner County Fair. Zimmerman said her granddaughter spent a lot of time creating her award-winning quilt and much of that time was spent at her house. “We have fun quilting together; she quilts at my house,” said Zimmerman. Zimmerman’s quilt was made with a cream background and burgundy star that Zimmerman said took her approximately 8 months to finish. She pieced and machine stitched the blanket together and took it to a friend in Winfield to have it machine quilted. Working on the quilt a bit at a time, Zimmerman confessed she got frustrated with her creation at one point in those eight months and had to set it down to try again later. She said she rotates projects and currently has four other quilts in progress. “Sometimes you’ve got to walk away,” said Zimmerman. After showing her quilt at the Sumner County Fair, Zimmerman decided to donate the quilt to the South Haven High School sophomore class where her granddaughter attends. The quilt will be raffled off during the school’s Christmas program.
Glennis Zimmerman and her husband, Jay. Glennis won a grand champion award for her quilt, which she entered in the senior division at this month’s Sumner County Fair. Contributed photos
