Clearwater mayor addresses EMS complaints By Sam Jack
The Times-Sentinel sjack@tsnews.com
CLEARWATER – At the Clearwater City Council’s April 24 meeting, Mayor Burt Ussery read an open letter regarding complaints about the city’s emergency services department, which encompasses volunteer
fire and EMS services. Ussery and each member of the city council received “numerous anonymous letters” of complaint over several weeks leading up to the meeting, Ussery said, and members of the public also approached Ussery and told him they had received anonymous letters. The Times-Sentinel has not re-
ceived any letters, and the city of Clearwater declined to provide copies of them, saying that the Kansas Open Records Act does not require their release. But based on Ussery’s open letter to citizens, and an interview, the anonymous letters apparently expressed opposition to changes in Clearwater’s volunteer fire and EMS services
that were implemented after both services were brought under the leadership of a single paid employee. Emergency services director Scott Cooper was hired a year and a half ago. “Each volunteer must be willing to train and participate in actual calls,” Ussery wrote in his open letter. “Since 2016,

there has been turnover in both the fire department and EMS. Turnover has been a result of retirements, resignations, and removal due to lack of participation. “At the same time,” Ussery continued, “both departments have loyal volunteers who con-

ANDALE – The Renwick School District has entered a cooperative agreement with the Cheney School District for food service operations for the upcoming school year. The contract was approved by the Renwick School Board at its regular meeting Monday night. In addition to six kitchens in Renwick, Food Service Director Heidi Wells will oversee two in the Cheney district. The contract will be subject to an annual agreement, Renwick School Board Superintendent Tracy Bourne said. Under the contract, Cheney will cover about half of Wells’ salary. The board also approved the purchase of 410 Chromebooks for Andale High School at a not-toexceed cost of $92,250. The high school bought the Chromebooks three years ago. The old sets will be given to the lower grades, Bourne said. In another technology move, the district will purchase 30 laptops at a cost of $20,250 for the staff of Andale Elementary School. The purchases are done on a six-year rotation schedule. The board also approved $14,004.49 to rebuild the engine of a 72-passenger capacity school bus, and an increase in the price of adult meals. The new price will be $3.65. The increase is a USDA requirement, Bourne said.

OZÉfest to celebrate all things Aussie By Sam Jack
The Times-Sentinel sjack@tsnews.com
Before you know anything else about Edward Fox, you know where he is from: Australia. His accent makes it obvious from the first word he speaks. Fox moved here in 1990 after meeting Alice Fox, a Kansas native and his wife of 28 years. His answering machine greeting includes a hearty “G’day.” But Fox’s pride in his home country goes well beyond his accent and his Aussie expressions. Since 2002, Fox has built and upgraded the Foxfire Cricket Field, one of the only privately-owned cricket grounds in the United States. Now he has extended an open invitation to OZÉfest, planned for the Foxfire field located south of Haysville. The free party will run May 25-28, with most of the events concentrated on Saturday. “We’re sort of pitching it as, in Australian terms, a bloody big backyard barbecue,” Fox said. “With me being from Australia, we wanted to focus on Australian culture, and I wanted to invite Australians from all over the country to come out for the weekend. We’ve gotten word that people are coming from as far as Ontario, and from Texas and Seattle – and those are just the ones that have contacted me personally.” The festival starts at 6 p.m. Friday, with barbecue for sale starting at 7 p.m., and games and movies at the cricket pavilion starting at 8 p.m.
Kookaburra Coffee, which Fox co-owns, will serve breakfast and coffee Saturday morning, and at around 1 p.m. that day, visitors can participate in the Bogan Games. “Americans might call it the ‘Redneck Games,’” Fox said. “In Australia, what we would call a redneck is called a bogan. Normally bogans wear flannel shirts with shorts and flip-flops, so we’ve got a lot of games centered around trying to run in flip-flops, trying to hit targets with flip-flops. Gold, silver and bronze flipflops will be the trophies.” Cricket matches will start around 10 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Cricket is a popular sport in Australia, as it is in many places outside America. To greatly over-simplify, the sport is what baseball would be if a baseball field had two bases and no foul lines. Games of French cricket, Aussie rules football, and touch footy – a non-tackling version of rugby – are also likely to be held. At 6 p.m. Saturday, Cur-
tis the Mentalist will give a free performance, followed by dinner and the “Great Aussie Movie Night” at 9:30 p.m. Sunday will feature more barbecue, coffee and cricket, as well as some signature Aussie activities: relaxing together, swapping stories, and having a good time. Monday morning, those who camped out through the weekend will pack up and head for home. “When people ask me what Australians are like, I say that they’re laid back, they’re fun loving, and they’re a pretty generous crowd,” Fox said. “That’s why I love the Wichita/Haysville area, because that’s pretty much how we are, too. Aussies are all about family and fun.” The Foxfire Cricket Field is located at the end of Duis Drive off of Ridge Road, just north of W. 79th St. S. Find the OZÉfest event page on Facebook for a detailed schedule of events. Those with questions may call or text Fox at 316-200-4135.

Local drama students honored at Jester Awards
Music Theatre Wichita has announced nominees and winners of the 17th Annual Jester Awards, a program designed to celebrate excellence in high school musical theatre. Shay Brown of Clearwater High School won a Jester Award for her cameo performance as Fruma-Sarah in “Fiddler on the Roof.” Local who earned nominations included: • Leading actor: Ethan Woodring as Tevye, “Fiddler on the Roof,” Clearwater High School. • Orchestra direction: Marla Weber, “Honk!” Eisenhower High School. • Choreography/staging: Rebekah Bailey, “Fiddler on the Roof,” Clearwater High School. • Technical achievement: Courtney Long (scenic design), “Fiddler on the Roof,” Clearwater
High School. • Sound: Sydni McBee, “Fiddler on the Roof,” Clearwater High School. The accolades program showcases the next generation of musical theatre talent in Kansas. Each year, trained volunteer judges attend and evaluate dozens of performances. This year, 102 judges viewed 127 performances of 41 productions, involving more than 2,800 students and 41 schools across the state of Kansas. The program began in Wichita, but now extends as far as Liberal, Hays, Salina and Pittsburg, in addition to the greater Wichita area. The Jester Awards Ceremony took place at Century II Performing Arts Center’s Convention Hall in Wichita on May 6. Honorees in 25 categories were announced during the ceremony, and
several of the honorees performed. Alumni of the Jester Awards program can be seen onstage and backstage at Music Theatre Wichita this summer, as well as on Broadway and in regional theatres across the country. “Theatre provides so many young people with a sense of community. Together, they learn the value of work, collaboration, creativity, and dedication. Their work is inclusive, and so are the Jester Awards. Whether they belted out a tune on stage, ran the sound board, or created the program – this is their night to shine. It is our opportunity to celebrate all that they have accomplished and to honor the community they have created,” said MTWichita board president Michelle Moe Witte.

Goddard adopts pavilion rental policy By Nancy D. Borst The Times-Sentinel
GODDARD – The Goddard City Council adopted a rental and reservation policy for the city’s new pavilion in Linear Park at their regular Monday night meeting. The pavilion, at 121 East Santa Fe, has not been available for formal reservation since its ribbon cutting last month. But there has been public interest in reserving it, said city administrator Brian Silcott, and the rental policy will ensure its availability for specific events. The new policy allows groups to rent the facility for the day (10 a.m. to 9 p.m.) for a $200 fee. Silcott said staff discussed breaking down the rental period into smaller time segments but dismissed that idea because the city does not have dedicated park staff. Staff also decided not to require a deposit fee. If there is damage from a rental, that individual or group will be required to pay any costs and will be barred from renting any other city facility. Reservations must be made through an online system. The city also has adopted online reserva-

tions for the Means Park Shelter ($50). The hope is to also add online rental for the community center but those renting that facility would still have to pick up a key at City Hall. The online reservation for the pavilion may be accessed at: www.goddardksgov/Facilities/Facility/Details/-12. The online rental for the Means shelter is at www.goddardks.gov/Facilities/Facility/Details/-15. Payment is made via PayPal. The new rental policy requires seven days’ notice for rentals and allows propane grills in the pavilion. For use by larger groups, non-profits and for-profits, a special use permit may be submitted. Signage will be posted at the pavilion so it is clear a group has rented it. Smoking is not permitted in the pavilion. The rental fee only guarantees use of the pavilion or shelter. All other amenities, including the new splash pad, are open for public use. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all city parks and facilities.
In other business, the council: • Approved a bid from Circle C Paving for the 2018 street maintenance project, which will seal, crack seal and overlay 56 segments throughout the city at a cost of $304,696.91. Local art show winners announced
GODDARD – The Goddard Woman’s Club sponsored its third annual art show where students from Cheney, Goddard and Eisenhower High Schools could submit their pieces for judging. The show was in the atrium inside of Dove Estates Senior Living Community, where residents and their families could appreciate the more than 130 pieces on display. The art was judged by Mika Holtzinger, a local Wichita artist and teacher at Butler Community College. Students were invited to attend an artist
reception so that they could enjoy the artwork with their family and friends. This year, the Best in Show piece, which was directly sponsored by the Goddard Woman’s Club, in memorial for Mary McElroy, went to Anahi Ticum, a student from Eisenhower High School. Her piece was titled “On Top of the World.” A new addition this year to the competition was the Distinguished Artist Award for a freshman, sophomore, junior and senior student. This was sponsored by local insur-
ance agent Mark Collier. The following students received Visa gift cards from Collier: Austin Lafary (freshman, “Dumbbell”), Kelly Troung (sophomore, “Salt & Pepper”), Larissa May (junior, “Nesting Bowls”) and Taylor Jamison (senior, “Tale of Flowers”). All first-place winners at the local level were then eligible for the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) state competition. Of the 17 pieces that went to state, the students earned eight first-place ribbons and five second-place ribbons.

Why did you choose Western Nebraska? “When I went on my visit at Western Nebraska, I was able to meet the girls on the basketball team and we got along really well. I also believe that playing for Coach Gibney will be a great experience. Also, the support that the sports teams receive from the community in Scottsbluff reminds me of Garden Plain and the support that we get from the community.” Major: Undecided. A word from the coach: “We are really excited to have Taylor,” said Western Nebraska head coach Chad Gibney. “She provides a lot of versatility for us. She can play inside and can play outside. She is a big-time shooter and brings a lot of toughness. She brings a high IQ of basketball, and we are very fortunate to have Taylor on our roster next year.” A little bit more: Joplin was part of the Owls basketball team that won the Class 3A State Championship in March. She also was part of a State tournament team her sophomore year, and was on the volleyball team that won State her sophomore year. As of January, her career stats on the basketball court included an average of 10.6 points and 5 rebounds per game. In volleyball, she was a three-year varsity player, racking up 158 kills and 65 blocks this past fall. Editor’s Note: All information and quotes were provided by WNCC.

ILLINOIS CIVIL WAR HERO MADE MEMORIAL DAY OFFICIAL by Tom Emery Memorial Day celebrations began to spring up on local levels just after the Civil War. But a Civil War hero from Illinois was the first to make it official. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan, one of the great volunteer officers of the war, is credited by many as the first to declare Memorial Day an official holiday. Logan declared an official holiday as commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, the foremost Civil War veterans’ organization, in 1868. Though Logan was the first to establish a national remembrance, there is considerable debate on the site of the actual first Memorial Day commemoration. “There’s a lot of controversy on that,” said Michael Jones, director of the Gen. John A. Logan Museum in Murphysboro, Ill. “There was a Memorial Day celebration in Woodlawn Cemetery in nearby Carbondale in which Logan was the keynote speaker, and I believe that played a role.” The Carbondale celebration, on April 29, 1866, is thought by many to be the nation’s first community-wide observance. Some 212 area veterans participated in the event. However, Jones notes a discrepancy on the inspiration for Logan’s action even within his own family. In her autobiography Reminisces of a Soldier’s Wife, Logan’s wife Mary cites her own experience at a cemetery in Petersburg, Va. in 1868. “Mrs. Logan saw the withered flowers and flags that had been placed in honor of the Confederates buried there,” remarked Jones. “She described this to her husband and said he should do something similar, which she says was the basis for his national declaration. She never mentions the Carbondale event.” Whatever the reason, Logan was moved to take Memorial Day a step further. On May 5, 1868, he issued General Order No. 11, designating May 30 for “the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion.” Logan’s order stated that “no form or ceremony is prescribed,” but that individuals and communities were left to their own “fitting services and testimonials... cherishing tenderly the memory of our heroic dead.” In the first year of Logan’s declaration, an estimated 183 cemeteries hosted observances for Memorial Day, more commonly known as Decoration Day. A crowd

of some 5,000, including keynote speaker and future President James A. Garfield, attended the first Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery that May 30. The following year, the remembrance was marked in over 336 communities in thirty-one states. While the original order clearly applied to Northern soldiers, informal commemorations in the South became some of the earliest Memorial Day observances. Recent scholarly research also reveals a mass celebration, mostly of African-Americans, in Charleston, S.C. on May 1, 1865. There, a parade of some 10,000, including black Union infantry units, marched to a local horse track that had been converted to a prison for Union soldiers. Black workmen had re-buried at least 257 Union dead from a mass grave, inspiring the large gathering that included hymns, reading of scripture, and placing of flowers. In 1864, women in Boalsburg, Pa. decorated the graves of their local dead soldiers, some whom had died at Gettysburg. On April 25, 1866, just days before the Carbondale celebration, a group of ladies in Columbus, Miss. placed flowers on the graves of Confederates who died at the battle of Shiloh. Noticing some nearby Union graves that had been neglected due to lingering animosities, they also laid some flowers to honor those soldiers. On May 5, 1866, the town of Waterloo, N.Y. began an annual community event to commemorate war dead. A century later, President Lyndon Johnson and Congress declared Waterloo as the “birthplace” of Memorial Day. In 1967, Congress officially named May 30 as Memorial Day, though many elderly Americans still refer to the holiday by its traditional name, Decoration Day. Four years later, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act switched the holiday to the final Monday in May. Though Memorial Day has become a three-day weekend and the kickoff to summer for many, thousands of communities from coast to coast still Jones sees parallels in today’s Memorial Day celebrations and the deeper meaning of Logan’s General Order No. 11. “I think Logan’s primary purpose was his fear, which is shared by many of us,” remarked Jones, “that all of the veterans would be forgotten. He wanted to ensure that we will still honor the men who died to keep the republic.” Tom Emery is a freelance writer and researcher from Carlinville, Ill. Cheney and Ike teams, GP’s Sell golf at State By Travis Mounts
The Times-Sentinel news@tsnews.com
Garden Plain’s Nolan Sell had a good showing at Monday’s Class 3A State tournament at Spring Creek Golf Course in Seneca. The senior, competing as an individual, shot 76 to finish in a three-way tie for fourth place. With tiebreakers, Sell ended up in the sixth-place slot, and was only four shots off the leader. The top three scores were 72, 74
and 75. The Cheney Cardinals golf team grabbed seventh place at that same tournament. Sabetha edged Phillipsburg for the title, shooting 320 to win by two strokes, while Cimarron was third with 324. Hesston shot 339 to place fourth. Cheney was in a tight battle with Jayhawk Linn and Sterling for fifth through seventh place. Hesston won that fight, shooting 344, and Sterling was right behind at 345. The Cardinals shot 346.
Connor Stephenson, a junior, had Cheney’s best score at 83. He tied six other golfers at 20th. Junior Dylan Freund was part of a three-way tie at 32nd, shooting 85, and senior Trey Akler closed out his high school career with an 86, good for a four-way tie at 35th. Cheney’s other golfers were Ryne Asbury (90, tie 44th), Aiden Cole (105, tie 84th), and Austin Reischman (105, tie 84th). This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Cardinals, but summer golf and improve-
ment during the season meant a return trip for the entire team. Five of six varsity players will be back next season. At the 5A State tournament at Dub’s Dread Golf Club in Kansas City, Kan., the Eisenhower Tigers finished 10th out of 12 teams. Tyler Trudo paced the Tigers, shooting 85 to finish as part of a seven-way tie at 35th. Mateo Villegas was close behind. He shot 87 to finish in a three-way tie at 47th. Trudo and Villegas led Eisenhower all season. Both
are juniors, and should make a formidable duo next year. Eisenhower’s other results included Parker Steven (94, tie 70th), Keagan Larson (97, tie 75th), Brock Clendenin (100, 82nd), and Caden Janzen (104, 86th). Only Larson will be lost to graduation. Like Cheney, the Tigers will return much of the squad. With offseason work and more consistent results in the third and fourth scores, the Tigers could see a noticeable gain in their State finish in 2019.

Cheney’s Micah Grover tags out a Haven baserunner during last week’s Class 3A regional championship, played at the Cheney Sports Complex. The Cardinals earned a first-round bye, then defeated Hesston in the semifinal on Wednesday before taming the Haven Wildcats. The Cardinals run-ruled both of their opponents.
Cheney rolls into State tourney By Travis Mounts
The Times-Sentinel news@tsnews.com
With a pair of run-rule victories, the Cheney Cardinals steamrolled their way into the Class 3A State tournament. Cheney, the top seed in the 3A regional played on the Cardinals’ home field, beat No. 3 Haven 11-1 in six innings in the championship game last week on Wednesday. Dawson Winter pitched well, and Cheney’s defense stepped up when needed. Already leading 2-0, a Micah Grover

EHS, GHS soccer seasons come to an end
By Travis Mounts
The Times-Sentinel news@tsnews.com
Both the Eisenhower Tigers and Goddard Lions suffered losses in soccer regional championships last Thursday. Eisenhower fell 1-0 at home to Kapaun-Mt. Carmel. Goddard dropped a 8-0 game at Maize. The Tigers were the fourth seed in Class 5A West, and were the top seed in their four-team bracket, while the Crusaders were No. 5 and the second-best team. Following a scoreless
first half, the Tigers struggled to get the ball into the Crusaders’ territory for much of the second half. As the half went on, the Crusaders got better scoring opportunities. Kapaun finally broke through midway through the second quarter, capitalizing on a sequence with three or four opportunities. The Tigers fought to the end, and drew a late foul that gave them a free kick from less 30 yards out with just 8 seconds to play, but the volley on the free kick went long and time
ran out on Eisenhower’s season. The Tigers finish the season 14-4-0. Goddard – the No. 7 seed overall and the second-highest seed in the bracket – was a definitive underdog against host Maize, which had 14 regular-season wins. The Eagles looked the part of the favorite, too, dropping eight goals on the Lions in the shutout win. It was a game that head coach Josh Hansen would liked to have been more competitive in. The Lions close out the season with a 9-6-2 record.

Lions ride shutout to State berth
By Travis Mounts
The Times-Sentinel news@tsnews.com
The Goddard Lions shut out Kapaun-Mt. Carmel 8-0 last week on Wednesday to earn a spot in the Class 5A State softball tournament. Syndi Williams gave up just one hit, and the Lions’ offense exploded for 5 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Williams struck out six and gave up just one hit while walking none. The Crusaders gave the Lions early help. Kinley Poynter got on base after being hit by a pitch. Emme Yost then got on base courtesy of a Kapaun error. Brooke Gallagher drove both of them home with a single to center field. Another error on a pop fly allowed Micah North to get on base. After Gallagher was tagged out on a fielder’s choice, North and Jessie Ornelas scored on a single by Williams. Torri Vang, who got on base on a fielder’s choice, also scored on a passed ball. Ornelas singled in Krystal Castronova in
the third inning. The Lions added 2 runs in the fifth. Poynter started the inning with a triple. The Lions then scored on
back-to-back singles by Emme Yost and Gallagher, scoring Poynter and Yost. The Lions, the No. 3
overall seed in 5A West and the highest seed in the regional at Goddard, advanced to the regional championship with a 12-2
for 9 runs in the first inning. Anahi Nunez, Yost and Gallagher each drove in runs during that big inning. Williams also pitched the Lions to a win in the opener, giving up 2 runs and two hits. The Lions pounded out 11 hits against Newton. Goddard added 2 runs in the fourth inning, and a final run in the fifth ended the game. Goddard heads to this week 5A State tournament at Maize High School as the No. 5 seed. The Lions (16-5) will face No. 4 Mill Valley (18-4) at 1 p.m. Thursday. The winner will advance to play either No. 1 Shawnee Heights (22-0) or Maize South (13-9) in the semifinal at 11 a.m. Friday. The other semifinal is at 1 p.m. (See Eisenhower story for the other side of the bracket). The third-place game starts at 3 p.m. Friday, with the championship at 5 p.m.

Cardinals return to State softball By Travis Mounts
The Times-Sentinel news@tsnews.com
The Cheney Cardinals softball team is heading back to the 3A State softball tournament, and redemption for last year is on the Cardinals’ minds. The Cardinals had just one loss heading into the 2017 State tournament, but suffered a 9-3 upset to Marysville. This year’s teams is seeded second – one spot higher than last year – and experience is on the Cardinals’ side. Cheney advanced to this year’s State tournament with an 8-1 victory over Central Plains League foe Belle Plaine last week on Wednesday. The championship game was delayed a day after the bad weather caused delays in the
first round. Following a first-round bye, Cheney advanced to the regional championship with an 8-3 win over Eureka (see last week’s Times-Sentinel). A solo home run by Lexi Cline – her first career home run – led a five-run first inning that sealed the win early against Belle Plaine. Cline, Taryn Lonker and Kennedy Higgins had multiple-RBI games. The Cardinals pounded out 12 hits in the game, but had only two more than Belle Plaine, as the Dragons had 10 hits. However, Cheney pitcher Emily Monson only allowed the Dragons one run in the second, and the defense helped out – despite four erros – as Belle Plaine struggled with bringing home runners. Cheney drew the best seed
of three different 20-3 teams. The No. 2 Cardinals will open the State tournament against No. 7 Osage City (16-7). That game is set for 5 p.m. Thursday at Manhattan’s Twin Oaks Complex on Field B. The winner will advance to play on Friday against either No. 3 Silver Lake (20-3) or No. 6 Southeast of Saline (17-6). The other side of the bracket features No. 1 Haven (22-1) against No. 8 Riverton (14-9), and No. 4 Oskaloosa (20-3) against No. 5 Thomas More Prep-Marian (18-5). Both semifinal games will be at 11 a.m. Friday. The third-place game will be at 1 p.m. Friday, and the championship at 2 p.m. Friday. BP 010 000 0 – 1 10 1 Cheney 500 201 x – 8 12 4

Pitching leads Tigers into State softball
By Travis Mounts
The Times-Sentinel news@tsnews.com
The Eisenhower softball team won its 5A State regional with a pair of 7-0 shutout wins. The Tigers, seeded No. 5 in Class 5A West and the second-highest seed in the Andover regional, defeated No. 12 Valley Center and then No. 4 Andover last week on Wednesday.
The Tigers claimed the regional title spot at 5A State by topping the host Andover Trojans, riding the pitching of Allyson Montgomery, who gave up just three hits and no runs. Chelsea Kurtz, Sadie Steiner and Jayden Vosburg all had multiple hits. The Trojans helped out the Tigers in the first inning. With two outs, Andover issued five straight
walks, gifting the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Eisenhower added single runs in the third and sixth innings, and then scored 3 runs in the seventh. The final-inning push started with a Vosburg single followed by a Talley Cole double to center field. A throwing error allowed both Vosburg and Cole to score. Later in the inning, a ground out by Macy Omli scored Emma Pabst.
Eisenhower scored five runs in the bottom of the second en route to a shutout victory over Valley Center in the opener. With Vosburg and Cole on base, Pabst drove in a run on an infield ground out. Cole scored on a single by Sadie Steiner. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Faith Denning drove in three runs on a line drive to center field, scoring
Steiner, Omly and Chelsea Kurtz. The Tigers added a run in the fourth and fifth innings. Eisenhower will play the underdog role at the State tournament. The No. 7 Tigers (14-8) will take on No. 2 Bishop Carroll (20-2) at 3 p.m. Thursday at Maize High School. The victor will play at 1 p.m. Friday against either No. 3 Seaman (19-3) or No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas (15-7).
(Read about the other half of the bracket in the Goddard softball story). The third-place game will be at 3 p.m. Friday, with the championship starting at 5 p.m.

Cheney girls win regional track crown By Travis Mounts
The Times-Sentinel news@tsnews.com
The Cheney girls track team is heading to the 3A State track meet with a regional crown in hand. The Cardinals got nearly all their points from a quartet of athletes, all of whom will compete at State in multiple events. Cheney’s 97 points at the 3A regional at Cimarron on Friday was well ahead of runner-up Garden Plain, which scored 65.6. Leading the way was Layne Needham, who won three of her four events,
and placed second in the other. She won both hurdle races and the 200 meters, and finished just .02 seconds behind Remington’s Hope Thiel in the 100 meters. Madison Amsink and Kadie Smith placed in three events each. Amsink qualified for State in three events, winning the high jump by four inches, taking second in long jump and placing third in triple jump. Smith will go to State in a pair of events after winning the shot put and taking second in discus. Smith was fifth in javelin, just missing out on

I’m ready for this recuperation to be over I have no idea what kind of patient I’ve been through the recuperation process following my open-heart surgery. For a true answer to that question, you’d have to ask my girlfriend Kim, who has been the Rock of Gibraltar through this whole ordeal. She was there for every step of the surgical process, and she’s been here for every step of my recuperation. She might have a different take on what kind of patient I’ve been, so if you ask her, do it in private…I might not want to hear the answer. What I do want, most assuredly at this point, is for recuperation to end and real life to begin again. But by some odd twist of fate, this rebuilding process is real life for me right now. There’s so many things I’ve had to either learn about, or swallow my pride and just accept as reality. Maybe there’s a humbler me ready to blossom out of all of this. One of the first things I had to accept was that I couldn’t drive. Actually, that whole directive made sense – I was so stoved up I could hardly move, and I was higher than a long-range missile on pain killers. “Is this what retirement is going to be like?” I asked Kim from the back seat of the car, where I had been relegated to sit since we couldn’t turn off the airbags. “No,” Kim said matter-of-factly. “When you retire you’ll get to sit up front with me.” She’s been my chauffeur for almost a month now, and next week I’m going to get a whole new perspective on life as I start to drive again…and go back to work at the office for a few hours a week. Along the way, Kim and I have learned a lot about pain management, cardiac rehabilitation exercises, and diet. If you need narcotic pain medications following a medical procedure, get ready to be treated like a drug addict every step of the way. Prescription practices by doctors don’t always match up with what insurance is willing to pay for, and in the end the only hope is that you

get off the drugs as quickly as possible to avoid the whole humiliating process of trying to get a prescription filled for a few pills that you actually really need. Cardiac rehab, on the other hand, is a gift handed down from the gods of cardiac reconstruction. It, too, is monitored like Alcatraz Prison, but with a touch of authoritarian love. Since I was in good shape going into my surgery, I was able to get into cardiac rehab almost immediately, and the therapists there are pushing me to gain ground as quickly as possible. Soon, I hope, I can be back at my own gym, working out with my own trainer, and trying to remember what it was like when 10 minutes on a treadmill made me feel like I’d just climbed Pike’s Peak. And diet…God help all of us cardiac patients. I’ve been on a heart-healthy diet for the past four and a half years, but now we’ve ratcheted things up a couple of additional notches. Along with the normal restrictions any heart-healthy diet brings, my daily dose of blood thinner for the shiny new heart valve I’m wearing requires that I now become an expert on foods high in vitamin K. That’s mostly things like spinach, kale and other vegetables that I love, so I now have to make sure I’m getting a true balance of those foods and don’t go crazy like I used to – like having a pound of spinach and a piece of fish for dinner. In the end, though, all of this will have been worth it. Soon enough, I’ll be back to a more normal life…and that life will have the positive benefit of a long future. And that’s worth a few balancing acts in my daily routine.

‘Word piano’ is a key tool for journalism The past few weeks, it has felt like we’ve been living from one deadline to the next. It’s our busiest time of year, and our publisher, Paul Rhodes, has been sidelined as he continues his recovery from successful open heart surgery. From mid-April to mid-June is simply crazy. We produce a medical guide, cover nearly three dozen sports teams for our three newspapers, put out our monthly papers, go to 10 different graduations and publish three senior keepsakes (inside this week’s papers!) with literally more than 1,000 kids, go to regional and state sports events across the state, and end the run with two fair guides.

On top of everything else, my youngest son, Aaron, graduated from high school, and I hosted nearly 50 family and friends a couple weekends ago. There’s not much time to enjoy work. It’s a grind-itout mindset, and the focus can feel like it’s more about quantity than quality. My thinking shifted, however, thanks to my three-year-old nephews. Miles and Griffin (along
with their sister, London, rounding out the triplets) fell in love with an old, old typewriter I have in my living room. The boys took turns playing with it, and got lots of enjoyment out of it during Aaron’s graduation party. I’m pretty sure it was the first typewriter they had ever seen. That unfamiliarity meant they had no idea what to call it. No worries, though, as they came up with their own name. Word piano. What a wonderful moniker for what journalists use when we’re doing our very best work. Sentences and stories can have a flow like a song. There is rhythm and tempo to language. There are emotional highs and lows. That name – word piano – also serves as a goal. There’s a certain
amount of technical skill in reporting, with a checklist of things to do when covering a story. But there can be artistry, as well, and that’s where we can inject emotion into our work and make connections with readers. When deadlines are short and the to-do list is long, sitting down in front of my word piano – even the electronic one used to write this column – reminds me that what I do, day in and day out, is more than just a job. This is a craft that, when done right, can marry language and art. We’ve been very busy this week bringing you the news, features, sports and photos in this week’s papers. We hope you enjoy the symphony we’ve created on our word pianos.
Appreciating my grandparents
Grandma and Grandpa Becker were people of action rather than words. Not that they didn’t have much to say. They just chose their words well and needed only a few to convey much. As their oldest grandson, I visited them during the summer when I was growing up in the late ‘50s. I always talked Grandma into letting me sleep in the screened-in porch on the east side of their home. Shaded by tall elm trees, this was the coolest place to slumber on those warm summer nights before air conditioning. More importantly, the porch was right next to my grandparent’s room where I felt safe and slept like a log each night.

Their morning activities would always wake me, and their longest conversations of the day took place while drinking black coffee with bacon and eggs several hours before I crawled out of my comfortable bed. In the background you could always hear a black Zenith AM radio providing them with the news and weather of the upcoming day. I’d just lie there comfortably in my bed, soaking up the sounds. I knew Grandma would make me my own special breakfast at a more kid-visiting-his-grandparents hour. My Grandpa Bert was a tall slender man with kind eyes and a rich baritone voice that invited attention
and respect. During those early-morning conversations with my Grandma Rose, he spoke with a gentleness that was unlike any other. While I didn’t really think of it back then, I just remember I loved listening to them visit and appreciated how my Grandpa talked to my Grandma. Today, I understand what I was listening to were conversations between a woman and a man who had truly become one. Grandpa always respected and took care of Grandma’s every need. She cheerfully and willingly gave back all that she received. My Grandpa Bert was a veteran of World War I, saw action in France. He died nearly 25 years before Grandma Rose. His later years were difficult, and
he suffered from Parkinson’s disease. I also believe ghosts from those brothers in arms, who didn’t return home with him, weighed heavy on his soul. Still, I never heard him complain. Grandma and my mother loved and cared for him when he couldn’t do so for himself. I have always considered myself a lucky man to have inherited some of the wonderful attributes of the Becker family – cheerfulness, perseverance, a willingness to think, work smart – and the ability to enjoy and appreciate others. Having Becker blood also means you have family and some good friends willing to stand by your side during the best and worst of times. And while your living may be hardearned – your life will be rich beyond measure.

EMS From Page 1A tinue to serve. There has also been an increase in the volunteers through the cadet program.” Ussery went on to explain that the emergency services director is accountable to both the governing body and the city administrator, Ron Marsh. “No funds are spent without approval. The safety of the residents has not been jeopardized, and our volunteer mem-
bers continue to serve this community with pride, honor, and dedication.” The mayor’s open letter also states that the city received a letter from former members of the emergency services department, saying that they “would come back if leadership is changed.” Four members of the emergency services department have recently resigned, including two who resigned “without notice,” according to a memo from Cooper that the city council reviewed Feb. 27. Ussery had already
received some anonymous letters by the time of that meeting, according to minutes. Ussery said he can only speculate as to why a person or people felt moved to complain, and why he, she or they did so through an anonymous letter-writing campaign. “The fact that someone takes exception and wants to do it the way they have, I don’t really have a response to it,” he said. “The only reason I chose to make a statement at all is because there were some people in the community

that approached me... and I did not want the city sitting back, doing nothing, if the community is getting these letters themselves,” he said. Cooper said that he takes all comments under consideration, but that unsigned notes have inherently lower credibility. “If there’s an action that needs to be taken care of, then I talk with Ron (Marsh) and the mayor, and we move forward with that,” Cooper said. “The fact that we’ve gone from volunteer to career leadership basically gives

CHENEY – The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) recently recognized Cheney resident Terrell Black for 40 years of service as a football, basketball and volleyball official. He has officiated thousands of games since getting started in the late 1970s. “They’ve all been pretty incredible. I mean, you take it one day at a time; of course there’ve been a lot of blowouts to go along with a lot of good games,” he said. “Working playoff games, both football and basketball, has been incredible. The environment is always so exciting. That’s usually the best part.”

Week. He has been using Facebook to celebrate the contributions of Clearwater’s fire and EMS volunteers. Cooper and local volunteers are planning an open house at the fire station from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29. “It’s for the community to come in and thank our EMS members, as well as just come in and ask questions and see what we’re doing here. If there’s any issues or concerns that they’d like to bring up at that time, we’ll have people here to address them,” Cooper said.

the City Hall a more direct line into the operations of the departments,” Cooper continued. “Now there’s even more accountability. ... Bringing in someone from the outside is always a bone of contention for a lot of people, because it’s a new person they don’t really know. What we’re trying to do here is keep the level of service the same while making improvements in all facets of both organizations, and just making Clearwater a safer place.” Cooper noted that this week is National EMS
Football officiating is something like a team sport, Black said. Black has been the leader of a five-person crew for the past 18 years, and his team has definitely developed camaraderie. Along with the rewarding parts of officiating come some challenges. Angry parents can be tough to deal with, Black said, and the problem with people’s sideline demeanor has become worse over the years. “We’ve got a pretty good shortage of officials right now. According to Referee magazine, it seems like 70 percent of officials quit after three years or less. A lot of that is just because of – I hate to say it – parents. It’s unfortunate,” he said. Black is happy to mentor younger officials whenever he gets the chance, and he encourages them to stick with the calling. “I would even even
encourage parents whose kids are out of high school to get involved. There has been talk about moving varsity (football) games to Thursday night, because of the official shortage, and that’s a sad deal when that happens. The Friday night atmosphere is something really special,” he said. Black is retired from a career with the Sedgwick County Fire Department. He drives a regular bus route for Renwick schools, and also drives activity buses. He was recognized for his career as a referee during the Class 4A Div. II State basketball tournament, with Andale High School’s boys and girls teams both on hand. “That was cool, because I know a lot of those kids real well, seeing them grow up and now driving them to different stuff. It’s been a lot of fun,” he said.
