The Times-Sentinel news@tsnews.com
The Cheney Cardinals are going to the 3A State tournament. They won three games over two days early this week to win the 3A regional held in Caney. The Cardinals, the top seed with a 19-1 record beat a familiar foe by topping Chaparral 4-2 in Tuesday’s championship. Halley Jones drove in Lexi Lorenz to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Chaparral tied the game with a solo home run in the fourth. Cheney won the game in the fifth inning, starting with a two-out, two-RBI single by Lexi Cline. An RBI single by Korri Lies made it 4-1. The Cardinals opened their softball regional with a pair of shutouts. They rolled to a 16-0 victory over winless
Fredonia in Monday’s 3A regional first-round game. The Cardinals needed just three innings to close out Fredonia. In Tuesday’s semifinal, the Cardinals pitched their second straight shutout, beating Neodesha 11-0. Lies pitched all five innings of the runrule victory. The Cardinals were all over Neodesha early in the game. Cheney scored 8 runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Halley Jones. She hit another double in the second inning to drive in a run, and Jalyn Turner drove in a run on groundout for a 10-0 lead after two innings. Box scores were not available at press time. Cheney will play in the 3A State tournament at Trusler Sports Complex in Emporia. Brackets were not set at press time. Check tsnews.com for updated State information.

Goddard is going to Class 5A State softball after a pair of close victories on Tuesday. The Lions, seeded No. 3 in 5A West and the top seed in the bracket they hosted, opened with a 7-5 victory over No. 14 McPherson, which had managed just four wins all season. Goddard grabbed an early 4-0 lead but watched the Bullpups come back to lead the Lions 5-4. A three-win sixth inning saved the day for
Goddard. Gentry Shepherd sacrificed in one run, and Sydni Williams drove in a run in the seventh. Emme Yost pounded out four hits, and Williams and Shay Martinez batted in 2 runs each. Williams went four innings for the win, and LeGrand went three innings to close out the game. Goddard scored a run in both the fourth and fifth innings for a 2-0 run edge over Salina South en route to a 2-1 win over the Cougars in Tuesday’s championship. Jessie Ornelas scored in the fourth inning on a Kendal LeGrand single. Yost
scored in the fifth thanks to a Williams single. LeGarnd pitched seven innings, allowing just 1 run on five hits. The Lions will play in the 5A State tournament on May 23-24 at Maize High School. Brackets will be posted on The Times-Sentinel website at tsnews.com once they are available.

Regional golf: Cardinals send team to 3A State By Travis Mounts
The Times-Sentinel news@tsnews.com
The Cheney Cardinals had the best overall finish among local schools competing in regional golf on Monday. A hometown advantage may have helped, as the Cardinals played on their home course at Cherry Oaks Golf Course. Cheney competed several times at Cherry Oaks this season. Hesston was the top team, shooting 326. The Cardinals shot 343, while Collegiate shot 360 to take third but miss out on State. Dylan Freund continued to play well as he has all season. He shot 80 and placed second, winning a playoff against Eli Graham. Grant Brenneman of Hesston had the low score of 77. Harrison Middleton and Connor Stephenson also placed in the top 10. Middleton won a playoff for fourth place with a score of 83. Stephenson also won a playoff to place sixth with a score of 84. Ryne Asbury shot 96 to tie for 14th, and Ethan Cokely and Aidan Cole both shot 105 to tie for 24th with each other and two other golfers. “The goal was to get to State. It wasn’t pretty, but we got it done. I
think with the pressure off of getting out of a regional at home, we have a good chance to play well next week,” said Cheney coach Tim Hiebert. Class 3A State will be held at Emporia Municipal Golf Course on Monday. Tee time is at 9 a.m., although players will have staggered starts on the first and 10th holes. Pairings and individual tee times were not available at press time. Eisenhower and Goddard were at the 5A regional at Rolling Hills Country Club on Monday. The EHS Tigers just missed going to State as a team. They shot 317 to come in fourth, missing a team spot at State by 10 strokes. Andover Central won with 294, followed by Bishop Carroll (306) and Kapaun-Mt. Carmel (307). Two Tigers will be going to State as individuals. Tyler Trudo and Mateo Villegas both shot 76 to finish in a four-way tie for seventh place. They were third and fourth, respectively, in the playoff, but most importantly they were the secondand third-best players not on a qualifying team. The top five golfers at each regional advance to the State tournament. Myles Brewer just missed out on qualifying for State. He tied for 17th overall with an 81, and was just two strokes behind the five and final

The Eisenhower Tigers girls soccer team beat Andover High School 1-0 in the first round of regional play Tuesday evening. The game-winning goal came about 12 minutes into the first half. “We had a throw-in in our offensive third, and were able to get it backside quickly for a shot from the top of the 18 by Jayda Wyat,” Tigers head coach Brandon Sommer said. After that score, Andover switched up their defensive tactics and denied the Tigers playing space, Sommer said. “A couple times, they were able to counter-attack and put us under pressure, so Kellie Hosford, our goalkeeper, made some nice saves to help us win that one,” Sommer said. The Tigers will host the regional championship game this Thursday at 6 p.m. Their opponent in that game will be the Maize Eagles, who beat Goddard 9-0 on Monday to end the Lions’ season.
The Lions played Maize at home earlier this season, losing 1-0. “They obviously are always a threat,” Sommer said. “They’re a better team than they were early in the season, and I think it’s going to be another battle. I think if my girls come out and play like they know how to play, we’ll be able to win.” Eisenhower played twice last week, getting two wins to enter regionals with a 13-2-1 record. Last Tuesday, the Tigers beat Arkansas City 9-0. Individual scorers were Harley Johnson and Kaitlynn Erwin, who scored three goals apiece. Emma Franklin had two goals, and Hannah Jensen had one. It was a similarly dominant performance at Hutchinson two days later; the Tigers won 6-1. Braelea Franks scored two goals, and Emma Scholl, Jayda Wyatt, Rylee Loyd and Johnson had a goal apiece. Goddard’s last regular-season game was a loss to Andover Central last Tuesday, 3-1. Goddard finished with a 7-10 record.
individual qualifier. Andy Sloss tied for 23rd with an 84, Emory Kaylor finished in a three-way tie at 25th with an 85, and Parker Steven tied with two other players for 32nd with a 93. The Goddard Lions were last in the seven-team field, but weren’t expecting to compete for a State berth as a team. Zac Miller was the top finisher for GHS. His score of 96 was good for 36th place. The rest of the Lions scores were: Hunter Reeves, 107, 39th; Brody Steele, 108, tie 40th; Gentry Cole, 111, 42nd; Jayden Miller, 113, tie 43rd; Logan Ashford, 115, 44th. The 5A State meet will be at Mariah Hills Golf Course in Dodge City. Tee time is 9 a.m. Monday. At the 4A regional at Tallgrass Country Club in Wichita, Clearwater came in seventh out of seven teams. The Indians shot 426, finishing 15 strokes behind sixth-place Mulvane. Caden Carlson had the low score for Clearwater. He shot 100, which was good for 20th. Clearwater’s other results were: Kip Burge, 102, 22nd; Christian Hastings, 110, 28th; Tucker Stiles, 114, tie 31st; Austin Baumann, 122, 38th. Garden Plain’s CJ Wyant was the only golfer the Owls sent to the 2A regional in Johnson, Kan. The junior shot 104 and placed 29th.

Cards to play for regional title By Travis Mounts
The Times-Sentinel news@tsnews.com
One game and the Haven Wildcats stand between the Cheney Cardinals and a return to the 3A State baseball tournament. The Cardinals won their first two games in the Wichita Collegiate regional, opening with a 12-2, five-inning win over Douglass and then beating Kingman 5-2 in the semifinal. Cheney hosted half of the bracket after conditions were deemed too wet at Collegiate. Belle Plaine hosted the other opening-round games and semifinal, although the Dragons lost their opener. The Cardinals – the tournament’s top seed – had little trouble with the No. 8 Douglass Bulldogs, who managed just three victories all season. Already leading 5-1, Cheney sealed the victory with a 6-run fourth inning. The worst thing you can say about the Cardinals in that inning is that Dawson Winter only homered once. He started the inning by hitting a solo home run, his second of the game, as the Car-
dinals sent 12 batters to the plate. They scored runs off hits, walks and a passed ball. There were two hit batters and one pitching change. Winter went 3-for-4 with two homers and 4 runs batted in. Trenton Reitmayer was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a walk, and scored twice, and Dawson Canaan went 2-for-3 with a double. Landon Gegan scored 2 runs, Harrison Voth added 2 RBI, and Zac Block added an RBI. The Cardinals scored 3 runs in the bottom of the second, thanks to an RBI single by Voth and Winter’s 2-run home run. Voth pitched four innings in his first start of the year, giving up just three hits and a walk. Noah Fullerton got the save. Cheney jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Kingman Eagles in the first inning of the semifinal, which the Cardinals won 5-2. Kingman cut the lead in half in the third, but a 3-run fifth inning gave the Cardinals a comfortable lead. Winter hit a single with two out in the bottom of the first. He stole second base, then scored on a throwing error on Ben Klinkerman’s ground ball. Klinkerman
stole second and then scored on Reitmayer’s single. In the fifth, three consecutive hits drove in 3 runs, with a single by Klinkerman, a 2-RBI triple by Reitmeyer, and a single by Landon Gegen. Winter started the game and got the win, but was ejected for malicious contact on a hard tag at third base for the third out in the top of the fourth. Kauy Kuhn came on in relief, pitching two scoreless innings before the Eagles added a run in the seventh. Reitmayer went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI, and Gegen added an RBI. Cheney (18-4) will play No. 3 Haven (11-5) in Thursday’s championship, which is slated for 4 p.m. at Collegiate. Haven beat Chaparral 19-9 on Monday, then won 2-1 over No. 7 Halstead, which picked up just its fifth win of the season in upsetting No. 2 Belle Plaine. El Dorado won 9-8 in the early game, and Clearwater took the second game 10-9. Wednesday’s other semifinal features No. 3 Clay Center (13-1) and No. 14 Nickerson (5-12).

Lions stumble in title game By Travis Mounts
The Times-Sentinel news@tsnews.com
The Goddard Lions were upset in Tuesday’s 5A regional baseball championship, falling 15-2 to a surprising Salina South Cougars team. The Lions, seeded No. 3 in Class 3A West and the highest-seeded team in the regional they hosted, advanced to the title game with a 7-1 victory over Andover Central earlier Tuesday afternoon. Goddard had a big inning in the bottom of the second, scoring 5 runs after staking out a 2-0 lead in the first. Kade Shulz, Jaden Wiley, Isaiah Cohens, Koby Burdett and Cole Gordon all batted in runs in the second. The Lions pounded out 15 hits, three times as many as the Central Jaguars. Shulz and Burdett had three hits each, including a home run for Burdett. Cohens pitched all seven innings, striking out nine against just five hits. But it was a different storyline in the championship. Salina South, seeded No. 11 – the lowest seed in the bracket – upset Maize 7-5 in extra innings in the semifinal. The Cougars kept that going against Goddard, scoring 10 runs in the first two innings,
including 6 run in the top of the first inning. Goddard scored 2 runs in the first, and then was held scoreless over four innings before losing by run-rule after five innings. Blake Mitchell and Jaden Wiley had four of the Lions’ five hits, with two each. Goddard finished the season 15-5. The Lions won their final two regular-season games last Friday, sweeping Wellington 9-5 and 1-0. The Crusaders grabbed a 3-0 lead after three innings, but the Lions fought back with 2 runs in the fourth and fifth. They scored 4 runs in the top of the seventh to break a 5-5 tie. Kaeden Hoefer and Alex Robinson had 2 RBI each. The Lions’ Cohens scored the game’s only run on a single by Burdett. Cohens and Jacob Shope combined to pitch Goddard to a shutout win.

The Eisenhower Tigers rallied but came up just short in an 8-7 loss to host Maize South in Tuesday’s Class 5A regional softball championship game. The Tigers led 2-0 after the first inning and 4-0 in the middle of the third. The Mavericks rallied with 5 runs in the bottom of the third and 3 more in the fourth, putting EHS in an 8-4 hole. The Tigers staged a rally of their own in the final two innings. After scoring twice in the sixth, Eisenhower added a run in the top of the seventh with two outs and had the tying run on second base. Brittany Gosh drove in 3 runs, and Calli McConnell and Allyson Montgomery had 2 RBI each. The No. 4-seed Mavericks and No. 5-seed Tigers were the top teams in their bracket.
