Cheney and Ike teams, GP’s Sell golf at State By Travis Mounts
The Times-Sentinel news@tsnews.com
Garden Plain’s Nolan Sell had a good showing at Monday’s Class 3A State tournament at Spring Creek Golf Course in Seneca. The senior, competing as an individual, shot 76 to finish in a three-way tie for fourth place. With tiebreakers, Sell ended up in the sixth-place slot, and was only four shots off the leader. The top three scores were 72, 74
and 75. The Cheney Cardinals golf team grabbed seventh place at that same tournament. Sabetha edged Phillipsburg for the title, shooting 320 to win by two strokes, while Cimarron was third with 324. Hesston shot 339 to place fourth. Cheney was in a tight battle with Jayhawk Linn and Sterling for fifth through seventh place. Hesston won that fight, shooting 344, and Sterling was right behind at 345. The Cardinals shot 346.
Connor Stephenson, a junior, had Cheney’s best score at 83. He tied six other golfers at 20th. Junior Dylan Freund was part of a three-way tie at 32nd, shooting 85, and senior Trey Akler closed out his high school career with an 86, good for a four-way tie at 35th. Cheney’s other golfers were Ryne Asbury (90, tie 44th), Aiden Cole (105, tie 84th), and Austin Reischman (105, tie 84th). This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Cardinals, but summer golf and improve-
ment during the season meant a return trip for the entire team. Five of six varsity players will be back next season. At the 5A State tournament at Dub’s Dread Golf Club in Kansas City, Kan., the Eisenhower Tigers finished 10th out of 12 teams. Tyler Trudo paced the Tigers, shooting 85 to finish as part of a seven-way tie at 35th. Mateo Villegas was close behind. He shot 87 to finish in a three-way tie at 47th. Trudo and Villegas led Eisenhower all season. Both
are juniors, and should make a formidable duo next year. Eisenhower’s other results included Parker Steven (94, tie 70th), Keagan Larson (97, tie 75th), Brock Clendenin (100, 82nd), and Caden Janzen (104, 86th). Only Larson will be lost to graduation. Like Cheney, the Tigers will return much of the squad. With offseason work and more consistent results in the third and fourth scores, the Tigers could see a noticeable gain in their State finish in 2019.

Cheney’s Micah Grover tags out a Haven baserunner during last week’s Class 3A regional championship, played at the Cheney Sports Complex. The Cardinals earned a first-round bye, then defeated Hesston in the semifinal on Wednesday before taming the Haven Wildcats. The Cardinals run-ruled both of their opponents.
Cheney rolls into State tourney By Travis Mounts

With a pair of run-rule victories, the Cheney Cardinals steamrolled their way into the Class 3A State tournament. Cheney, the top seed in the 3A regional played on the Cardinals’ home field, beat No. 3 Haven 11-1 in six innings in the championship game last week on Wednesday. Dawson Winter pitched well, and Cheney’s defense stepped up when needed. Already leading 2-0, a Micah Grover
3-run home run started the Cardinals’ offensive onslaught. Cheney added an additional 3 runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Corbin Meireis had three hits and scored twice, and Trenton Canaan got on base three times, with two hits. The Cardinals, who had a first-round bye as the tournament’s top seed, needed just five innings to defeat No. 5 Hesston 12-2. Cheney pounded out 12 hits against the Swathers. The Cardinals scored 3 runs in each of the first three innings for a 9-2 lead, and scored in all five innings. Kauy Kuhn gave up just one earned run, and
was 3-for-4 at the plate. Grover’s three hits included two RBIs, and he scored three times. Cheney is now heading to 3A State for the second time in the program’s threeyear history. The Cardinals also made it to State in their inaugural season. The Cardinals’ will open State at 1:15 p.m. at Kansas State’s Tointon Family Stadium. It’s a well balanced field, with the top seed and bottom seed separated by just three losses. No. 6 Cheney (20-3) will face No. 3 Marion-Centre (21-2). The winner will play in the first semifinal at 11 a.m. Friday against either No. 2 Southeast High
from Cherokee (20-1) or No. 7 Sabetha (20-3). The other half of the bracket includes No. 1 Thomas More Prep-Marian (22-1) vs. No. 8 Wellsville (19-4), and No. 4 Riley County (19-2) against No. 5 Humboldt (20-3). EHS, GHS soccer seasons come to an end
By Travis Mounts
The Times-Sentinel news@tsnews.com
Both the Eisenhower Tigers and Goddard Lions suffered losses in soccer regional championships last Thursday. Eisenhower fell 1-0 at home to Kapaun-Mt. Carmel. Goddard dropped a 8-0 game at Maize. The Tigers were the fourth seed in Class 5A West, and were the top seed in their four-team bracket, while the Crusaders were No. 5 and the second-best team. Following a scoreless
first half, the Tigers struggled to get the ball into the Crusaders’ territory for much of the second half. As the half went on, the Crusaders got better scoring opportunities. Kapaun finally broke through midway through the second quarter, capitalizing on a sequence with three or four opportunities. The Tigers fought to the end, and drew a late foul that gave them a free kick from less 30 yards out with just 8 seconds to play, but the volley on the free kick went long and time
ran out on Eisenhower’s season. The Tigers finish the season 14-4-0. Goddard – the No. 7 seed overall and the second-highest seed in the bracket – was a definitive underdog against host Maize, which had 14 regular-season wins. The Eagles looked the part of the favorite, too, dropping eight goals on the Lions in the shutout win. It was a game that head coach Josh Hansen would liked to have been more competitive in. The Lions close out the season with a 9-6-2 record.

Lions ride shutout to State berth
By Travis Mounts
The Times-Sentinel news@tsnews.com
The Goddard Lions shut out Kapaun-Mt. Carmel 8-0 last week on Wednesday to earn a spot in the Class 5A State softball tournament. Syndi Williams gave up just one hit, and the Lions’ offense exploded for 5 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Williams struck out six and gave up just one hit while walking none. The Crusaders gave the Lions early help. Kinley Poynter got on base after being hit by a pitch. Emme Yost then got on base courtesy of a Kapaun error. Brooke Gallagher drove both of them home with a single to center field. Another error on a pop fly allowed Micah North to get on base. After Gallagher was tagged out on a fielder’s choice, North and Jessie Ornelas scored on a single by Williams. Torri Vang, who got on base on a fielder’s choice, also scored on a passed ball. Ornelas singled in Krystal Castronova in
the third inning. The Lions added 2 runs in the fifth. Poynter started the inning with a triple. The Lions then scored on
back-to-back singles by Emme Yost and Gallagher, scoring Poynter and Yost. The Lions, the No. 3
overall seed in 5A West and the highest seed in the regional at Goddard, advanced to the regional championship with a 12-2
for 9 runs in the first inning. Anahi Nunez, Yost and Gallagher each drove in runs during that big inning. Williams also pitched the Lions to a win in the opener, giving up 2 runs and two hits. The Lions pounded out 11 hits against Newton. Goddard added 2 runs in the fourth inning, and a final run in the fifth ended the game. Goddard heads to this week 5A State tournament at Maize High School as the No. 5 seed. The Lions (16-5) will face No. 4 Mill Valley (18-4) at 1 p.m. Thursday. The winner will advance to play either No. 1 Shawnee Heights (22-0) or Maize South (13-9) in the semifinal at 11 a.m. Friday. The other semifinal is at 1 p.m. (See Eisenhower story for the other side of the bracket). The third-place game starts at 3 p.m. Friday, with the championship at 5 p.m.

Cardinals return to State softball By Travis Mounts
The Times-Sentinel news@tsnews.com
The Cheney Cardinals softball team is heading back to the 3A State softball tournament, and redemption for last year is on the Cardinals’ minds. The Cardinals had just one loss heading into the 2017 State tournament, but suffered a 9-3 upset to Marysville. This year’s teams is seeded second – one spot higher than last year – and experience is on the Cardinals’ side. Cheney advanced to this year’s State tournament with an 8-1 victory over Central Plains League foe Belle Plaine last week on Wednesday. The championship game was delayed a day after the bad weather caused delays in the
first round. Following a first-round bye, Cheney advanced to the regional championship with an 8-3 win over Eureka (see last week’s Times-Sentinel). A solo home run by Lexi Cline – her first career home run – led a five-run first inning that sealed the win early against Belle Plaine. Cline, Taryn Lonker and Kennedy Higgins had multiple-RBI games. The Cardinals pounded out 12 hits in the game, but had only two more than Belle Plaine, as the Dragons had 10 hits. However, Cheney pitcher Emily Monson only allowed the Dragons one run in the second, and the defense helped out – despite four erros – as Belle Plaine struggled with bringing home runners. Cheney drew the best seed
of three different 20-3 teams. The No. 2 Cardinals will open the State tournament against No. 7 Osage City (16-7). That game is set for 5 p.m. Thursday at Manhattan’s Twin Oaks Complex on Field B. The winner will advance to play on Friday against either No. 3 Silver Lake (20-3) or No. 6 Southeast of Saline (17-6). The other side of the bracket features No. 1 Haven (22-1) against No. 8 Riverton (14-9), and No. 4 Oskaloosa (20-3) against No. 5 Thomas More Prep-Marian (18-5). Both semifinal games will be at 11 a.m. Friday. The third-place game will be at 1 p.m. Friday, and the championship at 2 p.m. Friday. BP 010 000 0 – 1 10 1 Cheney 500 201 x – 8 12 4

Pitching leads Tigers into State softball
By Travis Mounts
The Times-Sentinel news@tsnews.com
The Eisenhower softball team won its 5A State regional with a pair of 7-0 shutout wins. The Tigers, seeded No. 5 in Class 5A West and the second-highest seed in the Andover regional, defeated No. 12 Valley Center and then No. 4 Andover last week on Wednesday.
The Tigers claimed the regional title spot at 5A State by topping the host Andover Trojans, riding the pitching of Allyson Montgomery, who gave up just three hits and no runs. Chelsea Kurtz, Sadie Steiner and Jayden Vosburg all had multiple hits. The Trojans helped out the Tigers in the first inning. With two outs, Andover issued five straight
walks, gifting the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Eisenhower added single runs in the third and sixth innings, and then scored 3 runs in the seventh. The final-inning push started with a Vosburg single followed by a Talley Cole double to center field. A throwing error allowed both Vosburg and Cole to score. Later in the inning, a ground out by Macy Omli scored Emma Pabst.
Eisenhower scored five runs in the bottom of the second en route to a shutout victory over Valley Center in the opener. With Vosburg and Cole on base, Pabst drove in a run on an infield ground out. Cole scored on a single by Sadie Steiner. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Faith Denning drove in three runs on a line drive to center field, scoring
Steiner, Omly and Chelsea Kurtz. The Tigers added a run in the fourth and fifth innings. Eisenhower will play the underdog role at the State tournament. The No. 7 Tigers (14-8) will take on No. 2 Bishop Carroll (20-2) at 3 p.m. Thursday at Maize High School. The victor will play at 1 p.m. Friday against either No. 3 Seaman (19-3) or No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas (15-7).
(Read about the other half of the bracket in the Goddard softball story). The third-place game will be at 3 p.m. Friday, with the championship starting at 5 p.m.

Cheney girls win regional track crown By Travis Mounts
The Times-Sentinel news@tsnews.com
The Cheney girls track team is heading to the 3A State track meet with a regional crown in hand. The Cardinals got nearly all their points from a quartet of athletes, all of whom will compete at State in multiple events. Cheney’s 97 points at the 3A regional at Cimarron on Friday was well ahead of runner-up Garden Plain, which scored 65.6. Leading the way was Layne Needham, who won three of her four events,
and placed second in the other. She won both hurdle races and the 200 meters, and finished just .02 seconds behind Remington’s Hope Thiel in the 100 meters. Madison Amsink and Kadie Smith placed in three events each. Amsink qualified for State in three events, winning the high jump by four inches, taking second in long jump and placing third in triple jump. Smith will go to State in a pair of events after winning the shot put and taking second in discus. Smith was fifth in javelin, just missing out on

The Goddard Lions girls track and field team will send three athletes to the State meet this weekend. At a 5A regional meet last week, Kade Hackerott was a standout for the Lions. She won regional titles in both javelin and shot put, with throws of 122-8 and 39-5.25, respectively. Kelsey DiMattia also qualified for State twice over, finishing fourth in discus (102-4) and in javelin (107-4). Jeni Laha won a regional
championship in discus, placing first in that event with a 112-foot, 9.5-inch throw. The all-class State Track and Field Meet will be held May 25-26 at Wichita State University’s Cessna Stadium. Races and field events start at 8 a.m. both days.
State, and teammate Brianna Lorenz placed sixth in javelin. Mollie Reno will run in two events at State. She came in second in the 1600 meters and was fourth in the 3200. The top four in each event at regional advance to State this week at Wichita State University. Last year, Needham placed at State in both hurdles events, highlighted by a second-place finish behind teammate Miranda Ortiz in the 300-meter hurdles. A year ago, Smith placed in shot put and discus. Amsink was 12th in high
jump in 2017. The boys placed sixth out of 16 teams. The Cardinals scored 38 points. Kingman won the boys title with 99 points. Trey Patterson, runner-up at State last year, will return to Cessna Stadium. Patterson set a new school record of 202-5 while winning the regional title. Riley Petz is going to State in two events after placing third in the 300-meter hurdles and fourth in the 110-meter hurdles. Petz competed in the 300 hurdles last year, but did not make finals.
