Betz Clos De Betz $51.99
With Merlot as the dominant variety in this blend, the color isn’t as inky black as the Pere de Famille, but the Clos de Betz still shows the dense color saturation from core to edge of the glass. Then the aroma takes center stage, with pure, vibrant black cherries, camphor, cocoa and a slight kirsch essence. Its foundation is a classic, complex expression of Washington Merlot, but since 40% of the blend is made from Petite Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the aroma takes on additional dimension of anise, rose petal and baking spice. It enters very supple and plush, with a jolt of black cherry and red berries that stays true to the aroma. Dried herbs, chocolate and a touch of smoky oak play supporting roles. The finish points dances with a robert combination of parker refined tannin and vibrant fruit, points the signs of a wine successful future spectator in the cellar.

With their renowned Mount Veeder estate Cabernet Sauvignon as its core (42%), Godspeed’s inclusion of Malbec (25%) and Syrah (33%) simultaneously raises this wine’s power and elegance. Trinity opens with a profuse nose that foreshadows the wine’s flavors of red fruit, black cherry, roasted coffee, and black pepper. An elegant and unique mouth filling mountain blend that pairs beautifully with any meat menu item. Only 600 cases produced.

It boasts an expansive, intense, complex bouquet of garrigue, strawberries and black cherries intermixed with a hint of spring flowers, a velvety texture and a voluptuous mouthfeel. This beautiful, soft, round, seductive red should drink well for 4-5 years.

Bodegas Nekeas “El Chaparral” Old Vines Garnacha 2011 $12.99
From the Bodegas Nekeas vineyards planted between 1890 and 1930, the El Chaparral Old Vines is always my favorite wine from this producer. This wine is made from 100% Grenache, or Garnacha, as the winery calls it. The 2011 possesses the classic notes of licorice, black raspberries and black cherry liqueur in a full-bodied, sexy, pure and ripe style. This is another amazing value from this winery, which any consumer attempting to maximize their purchase power should know by name. A spicy, elegant yet playful wine.

Ripe blackcurrant and boysenberry on the nose, with bright spice and floral accents. Fleshy and sweet, with supple dark berry preserve and violet pastille flavors, velvety texture and bright mineral lift. Finishes with spicy length, soft tannins and lingering florality. The 2007 Victorino was sourced from 45-year-old vines and aged in new French oak for 18 months. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it is big, structured, and beautifully concentrated. Bodegas Teso La Monja is the Eguren family’s new project in Toro featuring a state of the art winery and old vines of Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo). Big and powerful this wine will appeal to all of you Cabernet lovers.

The 2011 Nisia is made from 100% old vine Verdejo (the youngest vines were planted in 1942). The wine is aged sur-lie, and fermented in both stainless steel and large format French oak. Notions of caramelized white citrus and tropical fruit blossoms along with a naked, natural texture as well as finish make for a terrific dry white with loads of personality and complexity. This beauty sells for an absurdly low price.

50% Carignan, 48% Garnacha, 2% Merlot The 2008 DOIX Costers Vinyes Velles reveals a deep purple color with outstanding aromatic complexity. Notes of liquid minerality, licorice, lavender, Asian spices, and black cherry lead to a supple, savory effort loaded with spice and personality. There is a nicely concealed structure that will allow the wine to evolve for several years although it is approachable now. It will be best from 2015 to 2028.

‘Black’ is a new blend produced from classic varieties that do not make it into the Quinta do Noval vintage. There are ripe blackberries, tar, smoke and orange liqueur on the nose that takes time to open. The palate is medium-bodied, very sleek on the entry, fleshy black fruits, sloe, spice and just a hint of white pepper, leading to a very focused finish.

Laphroaig 18yr 48% abv Non-Chill Filtered $124.99 The extra maturation has definitely smoothed out this Laphroaig. Rich, creamy, with subtle brine, smoke, seaweed, anise, ginger, and citrus are on the palate. Although the 15yr will be missed, I think this is a great replacement.
